Doris Ann Huelsman, 74

Doris Ann Huelsman, 74, Foxhome, Minn., died at St. Francis Nursing Home Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Breckenridge, Minn., with the Rev. Kenneth Popp officiating.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19 with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge.

Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic cemetery, Breckenridge.

Doris was born to Herman and Alma (McLaughlin) Muehler on Jan. 30, 1936, in Wahpeton, N.D. She grew up and attended schools in Fairmount, N.D., graduating in 1954. She married Arlo Huelsman on June 26, 1954, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Foxhome. From that point forth they made their home in Foxhome, raising their six children there.

Doris was civic-minded, helping in many ways around her community and church. She was a Campfire Girls leader, Cub Scout and 4-H leader, a volunteer on the Foxhome Fire Department, was on church council for St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and was a member of St. Mary’s Mission Circle.

One of her greatest joys in life was raising her children and being active in their lives. When they left home, she began working at Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative and also worked at 4-Seasons Plant Center.

In her spare time, Doris loved to garden, enjoyed canning and was especially famous for her pickles.

She was a great cook and was an accomplished seamstress. She welcomed the times she could go traveling and do some fishing. It has been said that she could out fish all those in her family. She had an open door policy for her children and their friends.

Doris is survived by: her husband, Arlo Huelsman of Foxhome; her children, Gloria (Bob) Thelen of Glenwood, Minn., Anita (Steve) Willprecht of Wahpeton, Joseph (Renae) Huelsman of Grand Forks, N.D., Dean Huelsman of Foxhome, Karen (Don) Ritter of Morris, Minn., Lisa (Tom) Nelson of Fergus Falls, Minn.; 15 grandchildren and eight great–grandchildren; her sisters, Alice Ellsworth of Breckenridge, Elaine Mitchell of West Fargo, N.D., Betty Bohn of West Fargo, Shirley (Greg) Wegscheid of Staples, Minn., Sharon Solberg of Bismarck, N.D., Darlene Carlson of Otesego, Minn., Linda (Roger) Steffens of New Effington, S.D., and Patty (Dave) Zietlow of Great Bend, N.D.; her brothers, Darrel (Scarlette) Muehler of Colonial Heights, Va., and Herman (Connie) Muehler of Vesta, Minn.

Doris is preceded by: her parents, Herman and Alma (McLaughlin) Muehler; her sisters, Elsie, Helen and Phyllis; and her grandson, Nathan Heily.

Renee Ann Burhans, 76

Renee Ann Burhans, 76, Breckenridge, Minn., died in her home Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, surrounded by her family.

The funeral will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18 at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge, with the Rev. Peter Erickson officiating.

Visitation will be two hours prior to the funeral, from 5-7 p.m.

There will be a private family burial.

Renee was born in Breckenridge on Aug. 19, 1934, to Leo and Alice (Burington) Braun. She grew up in Breckenridge, attending St. Mary’s through the eighth grade then on to Breckenridge High School. Renee married Kenneth Burhans on Nov. 12, 1951, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. They made their home in Breckenridge until 1963 when they and their four children packed up and moved out to California, which became their home for 26 years. Four more children were born and raised there. In 1989 they moved back to Breckenridge where they spent their retirement years. Kenneth preceded Renee on Dec. 9, 1991.

In her spare time, Renee enjoyed crossword puzzles and crafting with her grandchildren. She treasured her time with her family. She will be remembered for her hospitality and her fridge was always open for those who came to visit. Renee will be sadly missed by all those who knew her.

Renee is survived by: her sons, Randy (Donna) Burhans of San Dimas, Calif., Rick (Cindy DeFries) Burhans of Breckenridge, Bobby Burhans of Wahpeton, N.D., Thomas Burhans of Breckenridge, Patrick (Wendy Johnson) Burhans of Dwight, N.D.; her daughters, Sandy (Jon) Brogren of Wahpeton, and Barbara Vanderbend, of Banning Calif.; her 13 grandchildren, Brock (Kim) Lorenzetti, Jason (Val) Vanderbend, Geddy (Christine) Hicks, Kellie Vanderbend, Erika Vanderbend, Vinnie Paxton, Jeffery Stevens, Breanna Paxton, Justin Stevens, Daryn Burhans, Amy Stevens, Rene Burhans, Kaiden Roberts; her 12 great-grandchildren, Jakob Lorenzetti, Anthony Lorenzetti, Gino Vanderbend, Marissa Lorenzetti, Jacob Hicks, Alex Hicks, Jayden Stevens, Ashley Hicks, Payton Harris, Harley Vanderbend, Jayden Toro, and Raiden Stevens; her brother, Jack (Kathy) Braun of Wyndmere, N.D.; her sisters, Frances “Pat” (Larry) Horak, of Phoenix, Ariz., Sheila (Richard) Ludwig of EdenValley, Minn., and Sharon (Ralph) Brinkman of Avon, Minn.

Renee is preceded by: her husband, Kenneth; her daughter, Kimberly Burhans (2006); her granddaughter, Valerie Vanderbend; her parents, Leo and Alice Braun; and her brothers, Leo and Bernard.

Dorothy M. Sethre, 102

Dorothy M. Sethre, 102, Breckenridge, Minn., died at St. Catherine’s Living Center, Wahpeton, N.D., Nov. 16, 2010, surrounded by her family.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23 at Breckenridge Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Mark Manning officiating.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22 at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Burial will be at Hedemarken Lutheran cemetery in Carlisle, Minn.

Pallbearers are Bob Muellenbach, Steve Muellenbach, Gary Score, John Sikorski, Harley Swanson, Don Voss, Maynard Walvatne, Obert Walvatne and Glenn Sethre.

Dorothy was born to Alfred and Rose (Luethy) Scheidegger in Rhinelander, Wis., on Jan. 26, 1908. She lived and attended schools there until the age of 11 when she moved to Fairmount, N.D., with her family. She continued her education in Fairmount, graduating from high school in 1925. She then attended teacher training in Fergus Falls, Minn., for one year. Dorothy taught for two years in Otter Tail County. On Oct. 2, 1928, Dorothy was united in marriage to Leonard Sethre in Fairmount. They made their home and started their family in Carlisle. In 1940 they moved back to Fairmount and then in 1973 they moved to Breckenridge.

Dorothy served as a 4-H leader for many years and treasured her years as a Sunday school teacher at First Lutheran Church in Fairmount. She attached importance to tutoring students to ensure their success in school. She enjoyed baking and traveling, and always looked forward to accompanying Leonard on his musical commitments. Dorothy and Leonard were married for 77 years prior to his death in 2005. She entered St. Catherine’s Living Center in 2005 where she remained until her passing.

Dorothy is survived by: her daughter, Joyce (Harvey) Brause, Fergus Falls, Minn.; her sons, LeRoy (Julie) Sethre, Breckenridge, and Russel (Kathleen) Sethre, Fergus Falls; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and14 great-great grandchildren.

Dorothy is preceded by: her parents, Alfred and Rose (Luethy) Scheidegger.

Carole Jean Matejka, 68

Carole Jean Matejka, 68, Breckenridge, Minn., died in her home Sunday morning, March 7, 2010.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 12 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Breckenridge, with the Revs. Jerry Finnestad and Ken Popp officiating.

The visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, March 11 at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home with prayer service at 7 pm.

Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic cemetery, Breckenridge.

Pallbearers are Jim Tyvand, Todd Dohman, Brian Olsen, Chad Hingst, Merlyn Pausch and Jim Montez. Honorary pallbearers are the Wilkin County Sheriff’s Posse.

Carole Melcher began her life in Hankinson, N.D., on Jan. 5, 1942. When she was only a year old, her family moved to Breckenridge where she and her brothers and sisters attended school. She graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1960 then proceeded onto her next phase of life - college and marriage.

Carole attended North Dakota State College of Science for one year then married Lloyd Hingst in 1961. They made their home and raised their two children - Lloyd Jr. and Kally - in Breckenridge. Throughout the years she held various jobs including positions at Lambert Building Center and NDSCS, both of Wahpeton, N.D. She also worked at St John’s Parish house, Wahpeton, cleaning for many different priests over the years.

On Aug. 9, 1991, Carole was united in marriage to Thomas Matejka, Breckenridge. The wedding ceremony took place in Seattle, Wash. Upon their return, they started their new life together in Breckenridge. She enjoyed going to the lake, camping and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Later in life, she took an interest in watching poker on TV and playing solitaire on the computer. Carole was a member of the Wilkin County Sheriff’s Posse and American Legion Auxiliary.

With smiles and appreciation, Carole’s family will always remember her strong will balanced by her quick wit.

Carole is survived by: her husband. Thomas Matejka, Sheriff of Wilkin County, Breckenridge; her daughter, Kally (John) Glander, Breckenridge; daughter-in-law, Janet (Greg) McMullen, Fargo, N.D.; grandchildren, Breinne Glander, Chad Hingst, Hunter McMullen, Sara McMullen; and great-grandson, Thomas; her sisters, Patricia Montez, Edina, Minn., Marlene Iverson, Alamo, Texas; her brothers, Patrick (Gail) Melcher, Laurel, Mont., James (Carol Ann) Melcher, Deer Creek, Minn.; her mother and father-in-law, Frank (Mary Lou) Matejka, Fargo.

Carole was preceded in death by: her parents, Elmer and Mary Ann Melcher; her son, Lloyd Hingst, Jr.; her brother-in-law, William Iverson.

Gertrude T. Knapp, 95

Gertrude T. Knapp, 95, Fergus Falls, Minn., and formerly of Foxhome, Minn., died Sunday, March 7, 2010, at the Pioneer Care Center of Fergus Falls.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 17 at Hope Lutheran Church on Highway 111 with the Revs. Jon Olson and Harry Olson officiating.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Burial will be at Bethlehem cemetery, Fergus Falls.

She was born March 6, 1915, in Aurdal Township the daughter of William “Bill” and Hulda (Krause) Duenow. Gert attended country school District No. 66 and graduated from Fergus Falls High School in 1931. She then attended Normal Teacher’s Training in Fergus Falls and taught four years near Elizabeth in District No. 208.

On May 19, 1935, she married C. Harry Knapp at the church parsonage in Henning, Minn. The couple farmed four years in Aurdal Township before purchasing a farm near Foxhome. Gert enjoyed running the combines and worked alongside Harry in their farming business before they retired in 1982. In 1990 she married Kenneth Loomer in Nebraska. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church.

Her hobbies included bowling, golfing, ballroom dancing, playing Pinochle, vegetable gardening and flowers. Harry and Gert spent their winters in Mesa, Ariz., for more than 30 years and summers at their cottage on Deer Lake, which was a favorite gathering place for family and friends. They also enjoyed traveling all over the world.

Survivors include: two sons, Gordon (Rosalie) Knapp of rural Ottertail, Minn., and Gary (Emily) Knapp of Lexington, Ky.; a sister-in-law, Myrna (Bob) Knapp-Safford of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., and Venice, Fla.; six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Preceding her in death were: her parents, Bill and Hulda; her husbands, Harry in 1989, and Kenneth; a son, Gerald in 1987; a sister and brother-in-law, Lorna and Bill Miller.

Arrangements are by Faith & Hope Funeral Home of Fergus Falls.
