John was born on the Wennblom homestead April 19, 1925 to Robert and Lenora (Asper) Wennblom, Alcester, S.D. John grew up among six brothers and sisters: Oliver, Vernon, Evelyn “Winnie, ” Ralph, Grace and Delores. He was honored as an FFA state farmer and graduated from Alcester High in 1943. After working on the farm for one year, John attended South Dakota State University and received his degree in agricultural sciences in 1948. As an agronomist, he worked in the Soil Conservation Service for several years in eastern South Dakota. During that time, he was introduced to his life-long companion and wife, Lola May Haufle.

They were married July 20, 1951, enjoying 59 years together. The couple and their family lived in several communities in the Dakotas and Minnesota during this time, with the longest residence in Lidgerwood, N.D.

As a father, John taught his children to enjoy the art of play in the outdoors regardless of season. There was always time to ice skate or ride bicycle; swim or ice fish; travel or sit quietly with a book. John enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends. He loved history and especially appreciated the Wennblom homesteading story.

He was able to share his gifts with his family for an extended time, after he received a heart transplant the day before Thanksgiving in 1992. John kept close to his farm roots as a soil scientist and salesman, working with farmers and ranchers throughout the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa and Montana. He felt fortunate to help establish and manage soil service centers under the name of Farmers Union Central Exchange, Cenex and Harvest States throughout the Dakotas from the 1960s through the mid-1980s. John also taught agricultural courses.

John was a member of Woodbury Lutheran Church, Woodbury, Minn. His faith was also evident in his active membership in Lutheran churches in North and South Dakota, serving as usher, Sunday School and confirmation teacher, deacon and councilman.

He is survived by his five children: Steven (Carol) Wennblom, Fargo, N.D., Sally (Mike) Hazelhoff, Fergus Falls, Minn., Susan (Joel) Varberg, Maplewood, Minn., Sonja (Brian) Bercich, Shakopee, Minn., Daniel (Beth) Wennblom, Big Lake, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; his sisters, Grace Joyce, Sioux Falls, S.D., Delores Anderson, Edina, Minn.; and sister-in-law, Audrey Wenn-blom, Seattle, Wash. He is also survived by his heart donor family, Paul and Linda Kraus. Their generous gift of life provided John with nearly 20 more years with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Lenora Wennblom; his loving wife, Lola Wennblom; son, Nathan Wennblom; and siblings: Vernon, Ralph, Oliver and Winnie.
