Benjamin Maruska

CLEARWATER COUNTY, Minn. -- Benjamin Maruska, 64, Brainerd, Minn., formerly of Clearwater County, died Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at home.

Benjamin Maruska was born Dec. 29, 1935, the son of Arthur and Gertrud (Jaworsky) Maruska, in Clearwater County. He drove a U.S. Postal Service truck from 1968 to 1976. He also logged for several years. He was diagnosed in 1976 with multiple sclerosis and had been ill since then.

He is survived by a daughter, Janice Maruska, Bemidji; sons, Edwin (Terry), Moorhead, Jeff (Beth), Leonard, Minn., and Richard (Maylene), Shevlin, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Josephine Stendlund, Minneapolis, Barb Schwartz and Rose Craig, both of Bemidji, and Ilene Christianson, Hines, Minn.; and brothers, Allen, in Iowa, Delbert and Garret, both of Shevlin, and Jerome, Zim, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Cease Family Funeral Home, Bagley, Minn.

Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.

Burial: Bagley City cemetery.

Alma Roe

FERTILE, Minn. -- Alma Roe, 87, Fertile, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, in Fair Meadow Nursing Home, Fertile.

Alma Katherine Christianson was born Sept. 8, 1913, the daughter of Bennie and Nellie (Boen) Christianson, in Beltrami, Minn. She moved with her family to Bear Park Township, Norman County, Minn., where she attended school. She graduated from high school in Gary, Minn. She attended Mayville (N.D.) State Teachers College, where she received her teaching certificate. She later earned her bachelor's degree in education from Moorhead State Teachers College. In 1935, she began teaching in Winger, Minn. She taught at schools in Fertile, Winger, Sundal, Gary, Hallock and Ironton, Minn. She married John Roe on April 21, 1957, in Rindal, Minn. She taught for more than 41 years before retiring. John Roe died in 1984. She moved to Fertile in 1997.

She is survived by brothers, Stanley (Lyla), Twin Valley, Minn., Dr. T.L. (LaVonne), Mayville, and Ordean, Crookston.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Orville, Norman and Archie.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Faaberg Lutheran Church, Rindal.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, in the church.

Burial: Sundal Lutheran cemetery, Gary (Erikson-Vik, Fertile).

LeRoy Saagge

ROSEAU, Minn. -- LeRoy D. Saagge, 60, Roseau, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, in Grand Forks.

LeRoy D. Saagge was born Sept. 18, 1940, the son of Thomas and Genevieve (Nelson) Saagge, in Roseau. He attended school in Badger, Minn., and Roseau. He served in the U.S. Army. He married Pat LaPointe on April 2, 1959, in Limestone, Maine. They lived in Roseau. He worked in maintenance for Polaris.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Pamela Swan and Sherry (Mark) Skoglund, both of Roseau, Jenny (Randy) Brandli, Warroad, Minn., and Renae (David) Metz, Spearfish, S.D.; seven grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; his mother, Genevieve Moser, Roseau; sisters, Darla McCloud, Thief River Falls, and Marlys Hulst, Judy (Raynold) Monsrud, and Loretta Monsrud, all of Roseau; and a brother, Arlyn (Phyllis), Badger.

He was preceded in death by a son, Ray; and his father.

Services: 4 p.m. today, Roseau Community Church.

Military rites: Roseau Memorial Honor Guard.

Laurence Dahlen

BAGLEY, Minn. -- Laurence Dahlen, 89, Bagley, formerly of Fordville, N.D., died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, in Greensview Health Care Center, Bagley.

Laurence A. Dahlen was born Aug. 25, 1911, the son of Andrew and Clara (Espelien) Dahlen, in Dahlen, N.D., where he attended school. He farmed with his father. He married Esther Nelson on Nov. 1, 1933, in Dahlen. He continued to farm with his father until 1942 when he acquired his own farm. He retired from farming in 1976. They moved to Fordville. Esther Dahlen died July 28, 1995. He moved to Bagley in October 1998.

He is survived by daughters, Avis (Clayton) Linstad, Dahlen, Karen (Fred) Spriggs, Prescott, Ariz., and Diane (Rolland) Kastner, Bagley; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a brother, Clarence (Nell), Fordville; and a sister-in-law, Olga Dahlen, Dahlen.

He was preceded in death by an infant son; an infant daughter; and brothers, Johnny, Alvin, Rudolph and Elling.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Dahlen Lutheran Church, Dahlen.

Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. today, Bakke Funeral Home, Fordville, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Middle Forest River cemetery, Dahlen.

Clifford Sundem

LANCASTER, Minn. -- Clifford W. Sundem, 84, Portland, Ore., formerly of Lancaster, died Dec. 1, 2000, in Gresham, Ore.

Clifford Walter Sundem was born Sept. 15, 1916, the son of Arne and Amelia Sundem, in Lancaster. He attended school in Lancaster and Hallock, Minn. In 1937, he moved to Fort Peck, Mont., where he worked for a federal dam project. He returned to Lancaster until moving to Portland in 1940. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, with a Silver Service Star, World War II Victory Medal, and a Purple Heart. He returned to Oregon, where he owned and operated several small businesses. He later worked for a power company in Portland until his retirement in 1971. He married Helen Zachrison Weberg in 1962.

He is survived by his children, Roger Weberg, Diane Sugden, Connie Bernstrom, Larry Weberg and Lori Perry; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mickey Tenny.

He was preceded in death by his wife; two brothers; and eight sisters.

Memorial services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Finley Sunset Hills Chapel, Portland. Memorials are suggested to the World War II Memorial or the American Cancer Society.

Sadie Fjerstad

FOSSTON, Minn. -- Sadie Fjerstad, 92, Fosston, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, in Midway Care Center, Fosston, where she had lived since July 1997.

Sadie Fredona Carver was born Feb. 26, 1908, the daughter of Fred and Hansena (Larson) Carver, in Fosston, where she attended school. She married Lloyd Fjerstad on Sept. 14, 1928, in Crookston. They farmed in Brandsvold Township until retiring and moving into Fosston, in 1977. Lloyd Fjerstad died Feb. 15, 1988.

She is survived by children, Mavis (Bill) LaVoi, St. Cloud, Minn., Robert (Marie), Carlton, Minn., Janis (Dick) Aos, Gonvick, Minn., Russell, Fosston, and Vicki (Wayne) Strom, McIntosh, Minn.; 26 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; one stepgreat-great-grandchild; and a sister-in-law, Irene Carver, Fosston.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Knudson; a son-in-law, Winton Knudson; two grandchildren; brothers, Orison and Kermit; and sisters, Inez Vennes, Eva Carver, Viva Emerson and Maida Johnson.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Hope Lutheran Church, Fosston.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home, Fosston, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Brandsvold cemetery, Fosston.

Alma Amundson

BAGLEY, Minn. -- Alma Amundson, 98, Bagley, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, in Greensview Health Care Center, Bagley, where she had lived since 1992.

Alma Holmen was born Aug. 11, 1902, the daughter of Martine and Karen Holmen, in Bagley. She moved with her family to Canada, where she attended school. She returned to Bagley with her family. She attended Crookston Agricultural College and Mayville (N.D.) Teachers College. She married Joseph Amundson in 1936. She worked at the Bagley Mercantile Ladies Department for more than 20 years. She owned and operated the Fashion Shop in Bagley for 20 years. She retired in 1973. Joseph Amundson died in 1980.

She is survived by a niece.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Anna and Mabel; and a brother, Chester.

Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Faith Lutheran Church, Bagley.

Visitation: 3 to 8 p.m. today, Cease Funeral Home, Bagley.

Burial: Bagley City cemetery.
