Johannes "John" Christian Van Malsen
(April 26, 1922 - April 9, 2012)

Hills, MN - John Van Malsen, age 89 of Hills, MN died Monday, April 9, 2012 at the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills, MN.

Funeral service will be 1:30 PM, Friday, April 13th Steen Reformed Church in Steen, MN, with Rev. Dan Kuik officiating. Burial will follow at East Side Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 12th from 2:00 to 8:00 PM, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home of Hills.

Johannes Christian Van Malsen was born April 26, 1922 in Steen, Minnesota, the son of Otto and Minnie (Teunisen) Van Malsen. He was raised near Steen, MN and attended country school.

Johannes was united in marriage to Jeanne Lyons on February 1, 1945. Soon after their marriage, he entered the United States Army on March 24, 1945 at Ft. Snelling, MN and served in WWII. He was honorably discharged on November 3, 1946 at Ft. Sheridan, IL. He returned home to Luverne, MN. In 1952 they moved to Hills, MN. John worked various places throughout the years, such as John De Haan Construction, Rozenboom Service Station, Hills Creamery and Fikse Produce, Morman Feeds, C.B. Ralfs Construction, Brown Elevator and lastly, Wilmer & Elbers Construction.

He was a member of Steen Reformed Church in Steen, MN. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and gardening. He also pitched and managed the Hills Fast Pitch Softball team from 1952 to 1965.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jeanne Van Malsen of Hills, MN; four children, Gary Van Malsen of Sioux Falls, SD, Barbara (Michael) Peterson of Hatton, ND, Shery (Grant) Matthews of Delano, MN, and Kevin Van Malsen of Hills, MN; ten grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; three sisters, Bernice Bartels of Hills, MN, Mona (Ray) Rozenboom of Rogers, MN and Florence (Peter) Schowenberg of Buena Park, CA; a brother, Otto Jr. (Evelyn) Van Malsen of Yorba Linda, CA; and other extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Minnie Van Malsen; a daughter, Susan Johnson; three sisters, Gertrude Fiekema, June Beyenhof and Evon Burdett; two brothers, Roger Van Malsen and Allen Jay Van Malsen.

Carolyn Ann Kruger
(March 11, 1942 - October 15, 2011)

Ellsworth, MN - Carolyn A. Kruger, age 69 of Ellsworth, MN died Saturday, October 15, 2011, at Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne, MN, after a three year courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, October 18th, 2011 at Zion Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth, MN with Rev. Calvin Hsu officiating.

Burial will follow at Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George, IA.

Visitation will be Monday, October 17th from 2:00 to 8:00 PM, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Zion Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth, MN.

Carolyn was born on March 11, 1942 to Fred and Louise Wibben in Rock Rapids, IA. She grew up in rural Ellsworth, MN near Stateline Presbyterian Church. She attended District 25 Country School near Ellsworth through seventh grade. She then attended Ellsworth Public School where she graduated in May of 1960. On August 23, 1960 she was united in marriage to Daryl Kruger at Stateline Presbyterian Church near Ellsworth. They lived on a farm near George and Ellsworth until moving into Ellsworth. She was a faithful member of Stateline Presbyterian Church for most of her life where she was active in PW, teaching Sunday school and bible school, playing piano for Sunday school and worship services. When Stateline Presbyterian Church closed, she became a member of Zion Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth where she served as an elder and was very active in PW and bible study. Carolyn worked in the kitchen as a dietary aide and later the dietary supervisor at Parkview Manor Nursing Home in Ellsworth for more than 20 years. She then worked at Sudenga Industries in George, IA for seven years before retiring in 2004. For many years, she made and decorated cakes for different types of occasions. She also enjoyed having friends over for Stanley, Tupperware and jewelry parties. Most recently, she was an active member of the Red Hatters - Sparklettes, the Ellsworth Chapter.

She leaves behind her husband of 51 years, Daryl; three children, Brenda (Kevin) Gisolf of Rock Valley, IA, Gene (Stacey) Kruger of Sioux Falls, SD, and Kristi (Sean) Peterson of Shakopee, MN. She leaves to cherish memories of her four grandsons, Richard (Brittney) Gisolf of Cedar Rapids, IA, Austin (Alicia) Gisolf of Rock Valley, IA, Dawson Kruger of Sioux Falls, SD, and Noah Peterson of Shakopee, MN. She also cherishes the memories of two great-grandsons, Xavian and Liam Gisolf of Cedar Rapids, IA; two step-grandchildren, Ramsey (Sean) Fitzsimmons of Norfolk, NE and Baxter Kavan of Telluride, CO. She is also survived by her mother, Louise Knutson of Sioux Falls, SD; two sisters, Jane (Darwin) Sletten of Sioux Falls, SD, and Doreen (Dennis) Miller of Tea, SD. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, three aunts and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father Fred when she was 6 years old and by step-father, Jake Kuper.

In lieu of flowers, family wishes memorials be directed to Hope Haven.

Gerald Haak
(February 5, 1932 - March 15, 2012)

Hills, Minnesota - Gerald Haak, age 80, of Hills, MN, died Thursday, March 15, 2012 at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne, MN.

Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Monday, March 19th at United Reformed Church in Hills, MN, with Rev. Doug Barns officiating.

Burial will follow at the church cemetery, with military honors by the Hills American Legion Post 399.

Visitation will be Sunday, March 18th from 2:00 to 8:00 PM with the family present from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home of Hills.

Gerald Haak was born February 5, 1932 on a farm northeast of Beaver Creek, Minnesota, the son of Abraham “Abe” and Cornilla (Van Bemmel) Haak. He attended Hills Community Schools. He was baptized and made his confession of faith at Christian Reformed Church in Hills, MN. He entered the U.S. Army in September 17, 1952. Along with earning his GED he also earned the rank of Corporal. He served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged on September 4, 1954. He returned to Hills and began working at John Morrels in Sioux Falls, SD. On December 3, 1954 Gerald was united in marriage to Henrietta Veltkamp at the Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley, IA. Together they lived and raised a family of four children in the Hills, MN area. Gerald owned and operated the Hills Locker until he retired in 1994.

He was a member of the United Christian Reformed Church in Hills, serving as elder, sexton of the church cemetery for many years, and an active member of Hills America Legion Post #399. He also was a member and volunteer for numerous organization and activities within Rock County. Gerald enjoyed raising lamas and growing apples. He loved fishing with his children and grandchildren. Gerald and Henrietta were very busy following their grandchildren’s school activities. His family will remember Gerald as a loving father and grandfather who enjoyed visiting with anyone.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Henrietta Haak of Hills, MN; four children, Charlene (Doug) Leuthold of Rock Rapids, IA, Larry (Deb) Haak of Hills, MN, Darla (Brian) Kraayenhof of Hills, MN, and Rhonda Haak (special friend, Becky) of Champaign, IL; six grandchildren, Bradley Haak of Hills, MN, Christopher Leuthold of Rock Rapids, IA, Derek (Erin) Haak of Sioux Falls, SD, Sara Leuthold of Ellsworth, MN, Adam Leuthold and Brent Leuthold, both of Rock Rapids, IA; two step grandchildren, Nichole Kraayenhof of Beaver Creek, MN and Kaitlyn Kraayenhof of Luverne, MN; one step-great-granddaughter, Cheyelene Kraayenhof of Luverne, MN; three sisters, Marie Koedam of Luverne, MN, Alida (Alvin) Ver Burg of Sturgis, SD, and Henrietta (Rich) Haan of Rapid City, SD; two brothers, Albert (Francis) Haak of Luverne, MN and Henry (Mariann) Haak of Sioux Center, IA; and many other extended family .

He was preceded in death by his parents, Abe and Cornelia Haak; two brothers-in-law, Albertus Koedam and John Vander Kooi.

Agnes E. Pearson
September 8, 1903-May 29, 2000

Place of Funeral: -- Sunset Memorial Park, Minneapolis -- Tues., June 6

Agnes E. Pearson, age 96, died on Monday, May 29, 2000, at the Bethany Good Samaritan Center in Brainerd, MN. Private graveside services will be held in Minneapolis on Tuesday, June 6, with Pastor Wayne Tellekson of the Pilgrim Lutheran Church in St. Paul officiating. Arrangements are with the Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter.

Agnes Pearson was born on September 8, 1903 in North Branch, MN, to Amanda (Carlson) and Charles E. Johnson. She grew up and attended school in the North Branch area. At the age of sixteen she moved to St. Paul, where she worked as a maid and a cook. She was married to Elmer S. Pearson on September 2, 1925, in St. Paul, MN. In addition to caring for her family she worked as a domestic helper in the metro area. She moved to the Bethany Good Samaritan Center in 1990, when her daughter moved to Crosslake. She was a member of the Pilgrim Lutheran Church in St. Paul for fifty years, and had been a member of the Carpenter’s Union and the VFW Club.

Agnes Pearson is survived by her daughter, Vivian Coates, Crosslake; two sisters, Melba Jenson, Grand Rapids, MN, and Ruth Sutter, Frederick, WI; two brothers, Arthur Johnson, Deer River, MN, and Albert Johnson, Lindstrom, MN; four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, and four brothers.

Albert "Buzz" Pull
July 19, 1920 - May 26, 2000

Place of Funeral: -- Crosslake Lutheran Church, Crosslake, MN -- Friday, June 2, 2000 1:00 PM

Albert J. “Buzz” Pull, age 79, of Crosslake, died on Friday, May 26, 2000, at St. Joseph’s Medical Center. Memorial services will be held at the Crosslake Lutheran Church, on Friday, June 2, at 1:00 PM, with Pastor Mark Anderson officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Crosslake-Fifty Lakes American Legion, Post 500. Arrangements are by the Brenny Funeral Chapel of Crosslake.

Albert “Buzz” Pull was born on July 19, 1920, in Fargo, ND, to Albert N. and Beatrice (Gronningen) Pull. He grew up and attended school in Fargo, graduating from North Dakota State University with a degree in English. He then moved to CA, where he met and married his first wife. He enlisted and served in the Army during WW2. Upon his honorable discharge he lived and worked in several midwestern states, eventually settling in Minneapolis. There, he worked as a Retail Accountant and a Sales Supervisor for Midland Cooperative (Land O’ Lakes). He moved to Crosslake in 1978, following his retirement. He married Pauline Radosevich of Crosslake on August 2, 1996. He was a member of the Crosslake Lutheran Church, and a lifetime member of the Crosslake-Fifty Lakes American Legion, Post 500. He enjoyed bowling, golf, hunting, and fishing.

Albert “Buzz” Pull is survived by his wife, Pauline, of Crosslake; a son, Nicholas (Rebecca) Pull, of Bloomington, IL; a granddaughter, Elizabeth (Jason) Heitz, of Bloomington, IL; a great-granddaughter, Amber Heitz, of Bloomington, IL; his mother, Beatrice Pull, Brainerd, MN; one sister, Sybil (Norman) Vowles, Maple Valley, WA; extended family members Thomas Rod, Eagen, MN, and Paula Alban, San Diego, CA; and his beloved dog, Jack. He was preceded in death by his father, his first wife Jean.

John Thorn
December 28, 1915 - April 3, 2001

Place of Funeral: -- Congregational Church, Staples, MN -- Monday, April 9, 2001 @ 1:00 PM

John Thorn, age 85, of Staples, MN, died Tuesday, April 03, 2001, at the St. Cloud Hospital. Services are scheduled for Monday, April 9th, at 1:00 PM, at the Congregational Church in Staples, with Reverend Muriel Hachfeld and Reverend Dean Morin officiating. Burial will be at a later date at the Evergreen Hill Cemetery. Family will receive friends an hour before the service at the church. Arrangements are with the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples.

John E. Thorn was born on December 28, 1915, in Staples, MN, to Enos W. and Kathryn A. (Ringler) Thorn. He grew up and attended school in Staples, graduating from Staples High School. He married Myrtle May Johnson on May 2, 1936 in Verndale, MN. He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad as a brakeman and conductor from 1941 to his retirement in 1975. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, camping and snowmobiling. He was a member of the Congregational Church in Staples.

John is survived by a daughter, Nancy Rebischke of Plymouth, MN; a grandson, Robert Rebischke of Minneapolis, MN; 2 granddaughters, Cindy Leen of Sauk Rapids, MN and Sara Beckstrom of Sartell, MN; 1 sister, Catherine Seiver of Austin, MN; 4 great-grandchildren, Mitchell Leen, Justin Leen, Rachel Leen, and Brady John Beckstrom. He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle; his parents; and 8 brothers and sisters.
