MABEL, Minn. - Helen Engrav, 77, of Mabel, died Monday, June 29, 1998, in Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Mabel First Lutheran Church, and burial will be in Mabel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Mengis Funeral Home, Mabel; and one hour prior to services Friday in the church.

MABEL, Minn. - Doris E. Peterson, 71, of Mabel, died Monday, June 29, 1998, in Green Lea Manor Nursing Home, Mabel. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Garness Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Mabel. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday) in the Mengis Funeral Home, Mabel; and one hour prior to services Thursday in the church.
Julie A. Hess
LA CRESCENT, Minn. - Julie A. Hess, 36, of La Crescent, died peacefully in her home surrounded by the love and support of her family and friends on Tuesday, July 14, 1998, following a three year battle with cancer.
She was born
in La Crosse on May 25, 1962, to Dan and Geri (Schroeder) Hess. She was a 1980 graduate of Aquinas High School. She worked in management for Hardees Restaurants for about 15 years, and for the past four years has served as an administrative secretary for Hess Excavating.
Julie was a fun loving and caring person; very dedicated and loyal in both her professional and personal life. She easily made friends with both young and old alike. She enjoyed boating, snowmobiling and skiing. She also loved animals, enjoyed traveling and was an avid Packer fan who dared to live in Minnesota.
Julie loved her nieces and nephews and was known to revel in her role as the ``favorite aunt." She placed special value on the times she spent with them.
Julie is survived by her parents, Dan and Geri Hess of Coon Valley, Wis.; her brothers and sisters and their families, Terri (John) Pedace and their children, Angela and Anna of Westby, Wis., Jan (Dave) Belmore and their children, Brianna and Natalie of Burnsville, Minn., Don (Sandy) Hess and their children, Dana and Jordan of Coon Valley, Mike (Kris) Hess and their children, Greg and Karina of Coon Valley, and Bob (Mary) Hess and their children, Jenna, Dani, Hayden and Adam of Coon Valley; her paternal grandmother, Irene Hess of R.1 La Crosse; and a special friend, Paul Houdek and his daughters, Jade and Tierney of Winona, Minn.
Julie was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Martin Hess; and her maternal grandparents, Herb and Bernice Schroeder.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 18, at 10:30 a.m. from St. Joseph's Catholic Church, St. Joseph's Ridge, with the Most Rev. Raymond J. Burke, Bishop of La Crosse, presiding, and Rev. Robert P. Hundt concelebrating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.
Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m., and on Saturday from 9 to 9:45 a.m.
Julie's family requests that memorials be given to Aquinas High School or to the La Crosse Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Emil J. Holz
WINONA, Minn. - Emil J. Holz, 93, passed away on Tuesday, July 7, 1998, at the St. Joseph's Rehab Center in La Crosse.
He was born
on March 29, 1905, in Hart, Minn., to Emil F. and Mathilda Will Holz. He married
Ruby K. Botzet, Sept. 22, 1926, in Winona. She died on Jan. 21, 1985.
He was a longtime owner of Winona Motor Company, Winona Truck and Implement Company and later owned Valley Distributing Company of Winona and Valley Farm Supply of La Crosse.
He was a member of Central Lutheran Church, Winona and was affiliated with Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, La Crosse.
He is survived by daughter, Eyvonne E. (Jerome) Kannel, La Crosse; seven grandchildren, Christine (Gary) Parins, Gwendolyn (Gordon) Zielke, Jennifer (Randy) Haller, Bruce (Nancy) Kannel, Tammy (Randy) Hayman, Scott (Diane) Tiffany and James (Mary Anne) Tiffany; and fourteen great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Jeanine Tiffany; brother, William Holz; and sister, Frieda Cordes.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 9, 1998, at 10:30 a.m. at Martin-Myhre Funeral Chapel, Winona, with Pastor Brian King, of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Thursday after 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Gary Parins, Gordon Zielke, Randy Haller, Bruce Kannel, Randy Hayman and Matthew Parins.
Memorials may be directed to Central Lutheran Church, Our Saviour's Lutheran Church or St. Joseph's Rehab Center.
Emil's devotion to his wife, two daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren played a key part in his life.
Dorothy H. Kolb
DAKOTA, Minn. - Dorothy H. Kolb, 83, of Dakota, Minn., died Feb. 24, 1998, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis.
She was born
Jan. 20, 1915, at Fargo, N.D., to Charles and Mary (Otterstetter) Holt.
On May 10, 1932, she married
John N. Kolb in St. Paul, Minn. He died March 30, 1980.
She lived in Dakota, for the past 33 years and previously in Winona, Minn.
Dorothy was a member of the First Congregational Church in Winona, and formerly active in the Republican Party at the state level.
Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia (Gerald) Robb, Fridley, Minn. and Karen (Donald) Nelton, St. Cloud, Minn.; three grandchildren, Laura (John) Garaffa, Vienna, Va., John (Dareth) Berg, Eagan, Minn., Sabrina (Tom) Munchow, Rush City, Minn.; and six great-grandchildren, Gabriella Garaffa, Mallory, Jennifer and Taylor Berg, Andrea and Joshua Munchow.
Cryptside services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona, followed by a Memorial Service at 1 p.m. at the First Congregational Church with Rev. Robert Vornholt, interim pastor officiating.
Memorials may be directed to Arthritis Foundation, Minnesota Chapter.

Helen I. Powell
HOKAH, Minn. - Helen I. Powell, 87, of Hokah, died on Saturday, February 14, 1998, at the home of her daughter in La Crosse. She was born
on May 10, 1910, in New Hartford Township, Winona County to August and Clara (Funk) Boehm. Helen enjoyed travelling, gardening and in her earlier years, horseback riding. Helen was very active in church functions at St. Peter's Catholic Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary Ann (Dwayne) Becker of La Crosse; four sons, Richard (Lydia) Powell of Appleton, Wis., Claude (Phyllis) Powell of Hannibal, Mo., Thomas Powell of Hokah, Minn. and Daniel (Karen) Powell of Barre Mills, Wis.; twenty-four grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren; one sister, Gertrude Thesing of La Crescent. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Harry; one son, Jim; and three grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 17, 1998, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Hokah. The Rev. Paul J. Breza will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Hokah. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. The Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent is in charge of arrangements.
Vincent William Poppe
HOUSTON, Minn. - Vincent William Poppe, 80, of Houston died unexpectedly on Friday, February 13, 1998, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse. He was born
on Houge Ridge, Houston County on May 27, 1917, to Henry and Lydia (Wiebke) Poppe. He graduated from the U of M School of Agriculture in 1942. From 1946 to 1989, he farmed just West of Houston. After retirement he began working at the Houston Group Home as custodian/maintenance man. He married
Marjorie Thronson on March 2, 1946, in Houston. He was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church having served as President of the congregation and the building committee. He currently served as a trustee on the church council and was the chair of the Stone Church Steeple Restoration Committee. Vince served for over 30 years on the Houston Township Board and currently was acting as treasurer of the Houston County Township Officers Association.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Charles (Diana) Poppe of Rushford; four daughters, Sharon (Joel) Schulze of Ellsworth, Wis., Dianne Poppe of Houston, Jeanne Poppe (Bob Vilt) of Austin, Minn. and Sandra (Kevin) Dixon of Wheaton, Ill.; his ten grandchildren, Tyler, Emily and Carter Schulze, Krin, Krist and Kjersta Poppe, Lydia, Casey and Skyler Vilt, Sophia Dixon; and three sisters, Erma (Arlin) Anderson of Sherburn, Minn., Norma Randall of Wanamingo, Minn., Vera Jones of Wheatridge, Colorado; and one brother, Harold of Jacksonville, Oregon. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dale and a sister, Ruby.
Services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 16, at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston with the Revs. Mark M. Rydberg and Lane Zaffke Co-officiating. Burial will be in the Stone Church Cemetery, Houston. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Hoff Funeral Homes-Houston Chapel and also one hour prior to service on Monday at the church.
