Allyn Mettille Ramsden
HOMER, Minn. - Allyn Mettille Ramsden of Homer, Minn., died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona. He was 92.
Born at home on Feb. 4, 1906, he was the son of John W. and Leona Mettille Ramsden. He attended Homer District #12 school as did his father and grandmother. He graduated from Winona High School and attended St. Mary's College: he graduated with a degree in chemistry from the University of Minnesota at the beginning of the Great Depression.
Mr. Ramsden began work at the J.R. Watkins Company on Dec. 1, 1929. Starting in the laboratory as a pill and tablet maker, he spent some time in all departments of the company with the exception of sales. He was the engineer in charge of building the Winona Mineral Plant and the new plant in Montreal. When he retired after 41 years he was in complete charge of all manufacturing in Winona and branches.
Retirement did not mean leisure, since he and his wife, Gertrude Lynskey Ramsden continued to operate Cider Knolls Orchards in partnership with their son-in-law Dale E. Welch. He continued to work until 1986. The orchards were situated on land that had been in Mr. Ramsden's family since 1866. His grandfather, Samuel Alling, was one of the earliest settlers of Winona County, arriving in 1853. Mr. Alling established a homestead claim near Witoka and lived there until he came to Homer in 1866. There he assumed care of Allyn Ramsden's father John in 1873.
Mr. Ramsden and his wife traveled to many places in the United States, Mexico and Canada, particularly enjoying the Rocky Mountains. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, director of the Winona County Old Settlers Association, a member of the Winona County Historical Society, and was clerk of Homer School District #12 for many years, following in his father's footsteps. Additionally he was clerk of Homer township for two terms and moderator for township annual meetings. He belonged to the American Chemical Society for more than 40 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Gertrude Lynskey Ramsden; and by his daughter, Margaret ``Peggy" Welch. Survivors include his son, John and his wife, Yvonne; his daughter Elizabeth Susie and her husband, Paul; his on-in-law, Dale Welch and his wife Jeanette; granddaughters, Kathleen Moser and Joan Susie; grandsons, Paul and Allen Susie, Thomas and David Welch and Sam and Ben Ramsden. He had nine great-grandchildren.
A mass will be offered in celebration of Allyn's life at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Winona. Concelebrants will be Rev. Msgr. Roy Literski and Rev. John Sauer. Friends may call at the Fawcett Funeral Home, Winona, from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening and after 9 a.m. on Thursday. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m. this evening and preliminary services will be at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, both at the funeral home. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona.
Casketbearers will be Paul Susie, Dale Welch, Thomas Welch, David Welch, Ben Ramsden and Greg Moser.
Memorials in his name may be contributed to the Community Memorial Hospital Remembrance Fund, Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, St. Mary's University or Homer First Responders.
The Fawcett Funeral Home of Winona (507-452-3624) is assisting the family with the arrangements.
