Standley Bendixen, 92, of Revere, died on Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at Valley View Manor in Lamberton.
Funeral Service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2003, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lamberton, with Pastor Lee R. Harder officiating. Internment will be at the Lamberton Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 - 7 p.m. today at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lamberton, and will continue one hour prior to service at the church on Saturday. Arrangements are with Sturm Funeral Home in Lamberton.
Standley Floyd Bendixen was born June 12, 1910, in Swea City, Iowa. At the age of one year he was adopted by John and Emma (Hanson) Bendixen. As an infant he was baptized into the Lutheran faith in Swea City, Iowa. He was confirmed in 1924 at Sharon Lutheran Church in Lamberton, by Rev. Tolefson.
He received his early education in Estherville, Iowa and Revere, and graduated from Lamberton High School in 1929.
In 1935 he took a machinist course at Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis and learned the welding trade. He worked for a year and a half at Seleen Implement in Storden. In 1937 he returned to Revere and established Revere Blacksmith and Welding.
On June 12, 1939, he was united in marriage to Gertrude Viola Nielsen at the Sharon Lutheran Parsonage in Lamberton. To this union, one son, Ronald Arden, was born on March 12, 1942.
Stan was granted a special exemption by the draft board from serving in the military during World War II, as it was determined that his services and expertise were more valuable on the home front -- repairing aging agricultural equipment that could not be replaced due to the war effort. In addition to his repair and welding services, Stan also installed lightning rods during the '50s, '60s and '70s. Many farmsteads in the area have buildings protected by his installations.
To this day some of the old-timers in the area credit Stan with the invention of the rotary lawn mower. In the 1940s, he began to build units using Maytag washer engines. The machines were primitive, totally lacking in modern safety features, but nonetheless he produced 75 to 100 units to fill orders. He never pursued a patent on his version. In the 1950s, when television reached the rural areas of Minnesota, he made dozens of towers for the outdoor antennas necessary to ensure good reception.
He also handcrafted spears for winter dark house ice fishing which were highly sought after. He is also remembered as the person to call in the winter to thaw frozen water pipes.
He semi-retired in the 1980s, cutting back his work hours, but continued to work in the shop when his services were needed. He operated Revere Blacksmith and Welding for 54 years, finally, fully retiring and selling his shop in 1991, when we was 80.
Stan enjoyed the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He especially enjoyed winter fishing, because it gave him an activity to pursue during a time of year when his business was slow. He also enjoyed traveling and camping. In 1967, he and his wife drove to Alaska for the Alaskan Centennial and to visit friends and family along the way. From the 1960s on he made semi-annual trips to the family farm in Marwayne, Alberta, Canada, to monitor crop progress and visit relatives and sometimes fish. After retirement when he was no longer able to pursue his outdoor activities, he enjoyed gaming at the local casinos and even made a couple of trips to Las Vegas.
After his wife's death he continued to live independently until his 90th birthday on June 12, 2000. He spent the last three years as a resident of Valley View Manor in Lamberton.
He is survived by his son Ronald of Minneapolis; and extended family in Iowa and Alberta, Canada. He was preceded in death by his parents John Bendixen in 1947 and Emma Bendixen in 1958; and his wife Gertrude in 1985.
