Carrie Jean Cockrum
Carrie "Jean" Cockrum, Columbia, Missouri, passed away November 25, 2003 at Boone Hospital Center.
She was born on November 25, 1925 at Eagleton, Oklahoma to William Seth and Mattie Hadley Eason.
On June 23, 1946 she married
Don "Woodie" Cockrum in Yuma, Arizona, and he survives. She was a member of VFW Auxiliary Post 280 and Elks Lodge 594 She was a real estate agent for many years in New Mexico.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, W. T. Eason.
Those who remain to mourn her passing are her husband, Don "Woodie" Cockrum; five children, Kelley Cockrum Lucero of Columbia, Wayne Cockrum of Traverse City, Michigan, Woodie Cockrum II of Nashville, Tennessee, Paul Cockrum of Villa Ridge, Mo., Shawn Cockrum of New Bloomfield, Mo.; a sister, Louise Humphries of San Bernardino, California; 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Mrs. Cockrum was in state Friday, November 28, from 4-6 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home, Columbia. Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 29, 2003 at Memorial Funeral Home, Rev. Rick Hopkins officiating.
Graveside services were at 1 p.m., Saturday, November 29, 2003 at Hopewell Baptist Church cemetery, New Bloomfield, Mo.
Linda Erickson
Linda Erickson of Cuba, Missouri was born on June 26, 1953 in Michigan and passed away on November 19, 2003 at the Missouri Baptist Hospital, Sullivan, Missouri at the age of 50 years, 4 months and 23 days.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents Olaf G. Erickson and Muncy Abbney Erickson.
She was also a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Cuba, Mo. and the Cuba American Legion Auixiliary.
Linda was a long time employee of the Cuba Free Press.
Those who survive to mourn her passing from this life are her God-daughter Kerri Klebofski; dear friends Dorothy and Kenneth Otterman; and many other friends.
She was a loving daughter, Godmother, good friend to all who knew her and will be sadly missed.
Memorial services for Linda Erickson were held on Monday, November 24, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Cuba, Mo. Arrangements under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo.
Cecil Arthur Graddy
Cecil Arthur Graddy of Bourbon, Mo. was born on June 10, 1936 in Bourbon, Mo. to Rufus Allen Graddy and Ruth Jane Pratt Graddy. He passed away on November 24, 2003 at his home at the age of 67 years, 5 months and 14 days.
Cecil was a miner working in iron ore most of his adult life. He married
Rosemary Madison Foley on December 1, 1956 and to this union six children were born. Rosemary passed away in July of 2001. Cecil later married
Frances Marrie Manues in Bourbon, Mo. on August 10, 2002.
Cecil was an avid coon hunter, and loved gardening. He shared all of the produce he raised and never sold it. He was a faithful member of the First Assembly of God Church, Bourbon, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Rosemary; his son Kenny Graddy; grandson Douglas Parker, brothers Bill Graddy and wife Pearlene, and Ben Graddy; sisters Evelyn Schmitt and husband Virgil, and Betty Mayberry; brother-in-laws Allie Hurst and Murrell Phillips.
Those who remain to mourn his passing are his wife of the home Frances; his children James Madison (Tricia) of Bourbon, Mo., Barbara Ivey (Jim) of North Carolina, Darlene Parker (John) of Washington, Mo., Rosanne Shepherd of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Linda Chick (Jim) of Bowling Green, Mo., and Angel Monda (Ron) of Cuba, Mo.; stepchildren Joseph Hess (Velma) of Cuba, Mo., Robert Hess (Ellen) of Sullivan, Mo., Patricia Murphy, and Donna Hess (Ron) all of Bourbon, Mo.; brothers Harold Graddy (Mildred) of Steelville, Mo., Ed Graddy (Kathleen), Dean Graddy (Pearl) and Ronnie Graddy, all of Bourbon, Mo., and Don Graddy (Faye) of California; sisters Dorothy Mae Whitaker (Bud) of Redwood, Mississippi, Mildred Hurst of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Hilda Phillips of Sullivan, Mo., and Hazel Pennock (Ronnie) of Peoria, Illinois; brother and sister-in-laws Buddy Barber (Jenny), Leo Mayberry, and Sandy Husch (John) all of St. Louis, Mo.; Juanita (Sissy) Zorn (Charles), Barbara Stricklin (Roman), all of Steelville, Mo., Sue Graddy of Bourbon, Mo., Mary Husch (Larry) of Texas, John Manues (Gail) of Alabama, Richard Manues (Audrey) of Sullivan, Mo., and Donald Manues (Cathy) of Potosi, Mo.; 26 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
Visitation was Tuesday, November 25, 2003, from 5-9 p.m. at First Assembly of God Church, Bourbon, Mo.
Funeral services were Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at 10 a.m. at First Assembly of God Church, Bourbon, Mo. with Rev. Harold Harrison officiating. Burial in Lea cemetery, Leasburg, Mo.
All arrangements under the direction of Hutson Funeral Home, Cuba, Mo.
Helen Catherine Hogan
Helen Catherine Hogan nee Stoessel of Rolla, Missouri was born on March 12, 1910 to the union of Joseph Louis Stoessel and Magdalene Massareng Stoessel in St. Louis, Missouri and passed away on November 20, 2003 at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center of Rolla, Missouri at the age of 93 years, 8 months and 8 days.
On April 18, 1936 Helen was united in marriage to Robert James Hogan in St. Louis, Missouri. One son, James, and three daughters, Eileen, Jacqueline and Patricia, were born to this union. They were happily married
until Robert preceded Helen in death on April 14, 1960.
Helen was also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Louis, Eugene and David Stoessel and one sister Philamonea Geist.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Rolla, Missouri.
Those who survive to mourn her passing from this life are her loving son James T. Hogan and wife Shelba; three daughters Eileen Hogan, Jacqueline Koyn and husband Walter and Patricia Leaders and husband William; 12 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
Helen Catherine Hogan nee Stoessel was in state at the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Missouri. Funeral Mass was held on Monday, November 24, 2003 at the Holy Cross Church of Cuba, Missouri with Father James Finder officiating. Interment was in the Jefferson Barracks. All arrangements were under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Missouri.
Marvin Hill Holland
Marvin Hill Holland, 85, of Lebanon, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at St. John's Hospital-Lebanon.
He was born April 6, 1918 in Hunter, Mo., to Walter and Della T. Hill Holland, who preceded him in death.
In July 1939, he married
Bonnie Lee Brawley, who preceded him in death on Dec. 3, 2002. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Warren Holland and Walter Holland Jr.; one infant brother, Milo; and one son, Harold Marion Holland.
He was a construction supervisor for the Missouri Department of Conservation Commission. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include a son, Ken Holland and his wife, Peggy, of Cuba, Mo.; a daughter, Connie Simpson and her husband, Ed, of Lebanon; one brother, Howard B. "Jack" Holland of Raliegh, N.C.; one sister, Louise "Sis" Ward and
her husband, Bill, of Poplar Bluff.
Six grandchildren, Karen L. Simpson of Ozark, Christopher Marvin Holland of Centertown, Kenneth Jackson Holland and his wife, Robyn, of Springfield, Scott Anthony Holland and his wife, Dawn, of Eureka, Alexanderia Ziegenmier and her husband, Kevin, of Virginia, and Kimberly Louise Newman and her husband, Derrick, of Lebanon; eight great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services for Marvin Hill Holland will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Holman-Howe Drawing Room with Chuck Whitmire officiating the service.
Visitation was from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. A 3 p.m. graveside service was held in the Lake Springs cemetery in Lake Springs under the direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Lebanon.
Jake Clark Litty
Jake Clark Litty was born Monday, May 15, 1916, at Scotia, Missouri, a son of the late Albert S. Litty and Daisy May Litty (nee Anderson).
He entered eternal rest Friday, November 21, 2003, at the Salem Memorial Hospital, Salem, Missouri, at age age of 87 years, 6 months and 6 days.
On September 4, 1937, Jake and Fleda Vaughn eloped and were married
in Farmington, Missouri. They have enjoyed over 66 years together. One daughter, Barbara Jean was born to this union.
In addition to his parents, Jake was preceded in death by one brother, Floyd Litty and wife Pansy, two sisters, Millie and husband Homer Carr, Geneva and husband Walt Moody; brothers-in-law, Raymond Hatcher and Jess Ellis.
Mr. Litty took early retirement from National Lead Company after many years as a heavy equipment operator. He and Fleda spent his years after retirement at Berea Temple doing the Lord's work, serving as groundskeeper, courier, day care bus driver and extensively involved in the Food Bank Program, until they moved to Maryland Heights 12 years ago.
Among those who remain to mourn his death are his devoted wife, Fleda Litty; their daughter, Barbara Jean Litty-Webb and special friend Ivy Mills, all of Maryland Heights, Missouri; one sister, Mary Hatcher of Elsberry, Missouri; one grand-daughter, Carol Jean Crump of Beebe, Arkansas.
Two great grandchildren, Nathaniel Crump and Caleb Crump; three step-granddaughters, Tara and Krista Crump and Stephanie Leahey; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Betty Ellis, Lee and Kathleen Vaughn, all of Salem, Missouri, Martha and Keith Scates of Branson, Missouri; three generations of nieces and nephews; many special friends from Berea Temple and Trinity Tabernacle; other relatives many, many friends.
Jake Clark Litty lay in state 3-8 p.m., Sunday, November 23, 2003, at the Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday, November 24, 2003, in the Britton Chapel with Rev. Ron Carnett and Rev. Joe Massey, longtime friend, officiating. Musical selections were provided by David Sanders, Dennis and Robin Vaughn and family, nephews, and Nick Wright, great nephew.
Committal prayers and interment were in Roberts cemetery, rural Salem, Missouri. Serving as pallbearers were nephews Paul Sanders, Tim Sanders, Jerry Litty, Dennis Vaughn and dear friend Jim Bourisaw. Honorary pallbearers were nephews Paul Litty, Jimmy Litty and Steve Lansing.
Arrangements were under the direction of Britton Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri.
Robert H. Lockhart, Sr.
Robert H. Lockhart, Sr. of Leasburg, Missouri passed away Monday, November 24, 2003 at the age of 84.
Robert was born April 15, 1919 at Granite City, Illinois to Elasco and Mabel (Halbert) Lockhart.
On March 11, 1960 he was married
to Rovene Pearl at Canton, Missouri. He honorably served is country during WWII with the U.S. Army attaining the rank of Sergeant.
Robert was employed for 39 years at Admiral merchants and retired from there in June of 1976. He was a commissioner for the Meramec Regional Planning Commission for 13 years and an original officer of the Leasburg Senior Citizens Homes, serving as vice-president for 15 years and three years as president.
Robert was past president of the Rotary Club and also member of the Leasburg Community Club for 18 years, serving as president for seven years. He was a member of the American Legion for 30 years, serving as Commander for one year and chaplain for 10 years.
He was a devoted employee and funeral director at the Eaton Funeral Home for 21 years until ill health caused his second retirement.
Robert was a faithful member of the First Southern Baptist Church of Leasburg and was a Sunday school teacher for 45 years and served on numerous committees within the church.
He is survived by his wife Rovene of the family home; one son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Laura Lockhart of Leasburg, Missouri; one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and George Shaw of Crystal City, Missouri; one sister Mary Edna Koehn and husband Kurt of Sullivan; six grandchildren, Lisa and Jason Weeks, Daniel Thoms, Robert, Amber, Michael and Sarah Lockhart; one great-grandchild, Morgan Weeks; sister-in-law Wanda Pearl; brother-in-law Jim Pearl and wife Jackie; lifelong friends, Dick and Trish Webb, Pat and Rocky Bunn whom he all loved as his own; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Along with his parents, Robert was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Andrea Lockhart, mother-in-law, Pauline Pearl and brother-in-law George Pearl.
Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m., Saturday, November 29, 2003 from the First Southern Baptist Church in Leasburg with Pastor Terry King officiating. Interment was in Crossroads cemetery. Visitation for Mr. Robert Lockhart was held from 4:30 until 9 p.m. Friday evening at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.
George Sillvester McConnell
George Sillvester McConnell was born Tuesday, July 11, 1910 at Brazil, Missouri, a son of the late Thomas Edwin McConnell and Emma (Ficher) McConnell. He departed this life Tuesday, November 18, 2003 at the Georgian Gardens Nursing Home in Potosi, Missouri at the age of 93 years, 4 months and 7 days.
On September 24, 1932, at Steelville, Missouri, Judge J. Haley united George in marriage to Hallie Haffer, daughter of the late William Henry Haffer and Ida Jerusha (Matchell) Haffer. One son and four daughters were born to this union. They had enjoyed over 59 wonderful years together at the time of Hallie's death, on September 1, 1991.
George grew up in the Brazil area near the Courtois Creek. After he and Hallie were married
, he worked in the timber and did a lot of farm work for several years. In order to better support his family, he and Hallie moved to St. Louis for employment. For several years they would spend Monday through Friday in the city, then drive back to their home in Crawford County for the weekends.
In addition to his parents and wife, George was preceded in death by three brothers, Luther, Charley and John McConnell; one sister, Annie Harmon; three grandchildren, Wanda and Elray Doss and Elizabeth Evans; and one son-in-law, Bill Doss.
Among those who remain to mourn his passing are his five children, Jesse McConnell of Cuba, Mo.; Betty Doss of Cherryville, Mo.; Erma Eaker and husband William of Bloomfield, Mo.; Anna Catlett and husband Michael, Helen Sweeney and husband Jewell, all of Steelville, Mo.
Brothers and sisters-in-law, Edna Pratt of Potosi, Mo.; Ruth Thomas, Gladys Hammond, Ruby Barman and husband Bill, all of St. Louis, Mo.; Fern McClain and husband Bob, and Melba Doss, all of Steelville, Mo.; Lucille Jennings of Ironton, Mo.; Raymond Haffer and wife Mary of St. James, Mo.; and Floyd Haffer of St. Louis, Mo.
Nineteen grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and three great great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
George Sillvester McConnell lay in state 4-8 p.m. Thursday, November 20, 2003, at the Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 21, 2003, at the Britton Chapel with Rev. Larry Martin officiating.
Those who served as pallbearers were Mike Catlett, Ronald Catlett, Nate Kaiser, Paul Sweeney, Kenneth McConnell, Roy Morton and Ernie Morton.
Committal prayers and interment were in the Fairview cemetery, Butts, Missouri.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri.
John Steven Silvey
John Steven Silvey was born June 15, 1952 to the late Norman Roy Silvey and Imogene (Smith) Silvey Pittman. He was the first of five children from that union. Growing up Steve was very active in football, basketball, band, 4-H and church. He graduated from Potosi High School in 1970 and went on to attend Southwest Missouri State University. From 1971-1973 he served in the United States Army infantry and became an MP while stationed in Germany. When his time with the Army was through, he returned home to Potosi where he joined his father and mother in the family business, Silvey Feed and Supply.
On July 13, 1974, he was united in marriage to Barbara Ann Torrence to whom he was married
for 29 years. There were three children born of this union, Laura Ann Silvey, Andrew John Silvey and Shannon Sara Silvey. An additional great joy was added to his life when son Andrew and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Alexanda (Williams) Silvey gave birth to granddaughter Alexandra Elizabeth Silvey on August 1, 2003.
Steve was a hard working man. In the late 70's he partnered with his father Norman, and brother Kelley in Kelstenor Farms and Laying Hen Operation. From there Steve and Kelley branched off to form their own laying hen operation, Silvey Egg Company. For over 20 years Steve and Kelley's business would grow to include Valley View Farms, Scorpion Watercraft, and Washington County Aggregates.
Steve was very involved in other activities. He was an outdoorsman for sure. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, horseback riding, team penning, jet boating, riding his Harley, attending church and spending time with his family. He also coached several little league teams and was Cub Master in Boy Scouts for 10 years with his son Andy.
Steve had a big heart and wonderful sense of humor. He would talk to anyone he met and enlighten them with his stories. On November 24, 2003, he lost his battle with brain cancer. He will always be remember in the hearts and minds of those who knew him. He was a loving husband, wonderful father and father-in-law, respected son and brother and terrific Grandpa.
In addition to his father, Norman Silvey, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Fern Torrence.
Among those who remain to mourn his passing from this life are his loving and devoted wife, Barbara Silvey of Potosi; his dear son, Andrew Silvey of Potosi; his beloved daughters, Laura Silvey of St. Louis, Shannon Silvey of Potosi and her fiancé Eric Hovis of Marquand, Mo.; his daughter-in-law, Lizzy Silvey of Potosi; his granddaughter, Alexandra Silvey of Potosi; his brothers, Kelley Silvey and wife Kathy of Potosi; Rev. Roger Silvey and wife Donna of Steelville; his sisters, Marty Avila and husband Robert of Potosi and Jennie Miller and husband Gary of Farmington and his father-in-law, Richard Torrence of St. Louis. Other family members and many, many dear friends will also sadly miss him.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 28, 2003 at the First Baptist Church in Potosi with Rev. Jeff Richards officiating. Those serving as pallbearers were Bill Long, Mike Perry, Mickey Schlosser, Dwight Evans, John Miller, John Higginbotham, Ray English and Allan Joe Wilkerson.
Interment and final prayers were at the New Masonic cemetery, located in Potosi. Mr. Silvey was honored with a very special military burial with the help from our local VFW Post #6996. All arrangements were entrusted to the care of the Britton Funeral Home at Potosi.
