Due to a lack of education and poor health Fred’s mother was not able to care for Fred and his sister Billie Doris, who was three years older than Fred. The brother of Fred’s father Bob and his wife Pearl Clark, adopted them. They moved the children to St. Joe, Missouri where they lived at the time. Fred and Billie attended elementary school in St. Joe, Missouri.
When Fred was nearly in his teen years, Bob took a position with a train company in Chicago. So Chicago became their new home. Fred worked for a truck farmer in his teen years. Not getting along with Bob and Pearl, when Fred was ready for his senior year in high school he moved to Bendena, Kansas to live with his cousin Lyle Tilbury better known as Bud. Others in the house were Eleanor, Bud’s wife and daughter Ann. Bud had a farm to market truck business, in which Fred helped him haul cattle and hogs to the market. Upon graduation from high school, Fred enrolled in Highland Jr. College in Highland, Kansas. He attended night classes as he had a job working in the Bendena State Bank. Little did he know at that time this was the beginning of his life working in the banking field. Fred served in the Marine Corp for a short period of time. Soon after turning 21, Fred joined the Bendena 440 Masonic Lodge. At the time of his passing he was a third degree mason.
When he returned from the Marines he continued working in the Bendena Bank. He worked as a book keeper and later became a cashier. Then for a year and a half he became a state bank examiner for the state of Missouri. When Bill Myer’s who ran the Bendena Bank became ill in 1955, Fred came back to the Bank and ran it. It was during this time Fred met Rosetta Reed who was teaching at Wathena High School in Wathena, Kansas. Two years later she was teaching at the high school in Atchison, Kansas. There were married June 12, 1956. They made their home in Atchison, Kansas.
To further his banking skills and commercial loans, he took a position in Kansas City with the United Missouri Bank, so the couple moved to North Kansas City, Missouri. In the summer of 1959 they moved to Nevada, Missouri, where Fred helped start a brand new bank, the Citizen State Bank. It was in Nevada, that their only child, a son William Reed Clark was born, September 1st, 1959.
The couple moved to Kearney, Missouri, when Bill was ready for the sixth grade. Fred’s last position in a bank was senior examiner for the Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas City, Missouri. Due to health reasons he took an early retirement, September 1st 1996. He and his wife later moved to Sun Lakes, Arizona to be near their family, Bill, Karen, and Kim Clark.
Fred will be missed by many, especially for his ability to tell jokes and recite poems. He is survived by his wife Rosetta of 55 years, son William Reed Clark, daughter in law Karen, and granddaughter Kimberly Rose of Chandler, Arizona, one sister Billie Doris Amidon and husband John of Penn Yan, New York, a niece Suzie Caitlin and husband Larry of Asheboro, North Carolina, and a host of relatives and friends.
