Brian Evans

Brian J. Evans, son of Bill Evans of Dexter and the late Patricia Carr Evans, was born on March 30, 1959, at Sikeston and died in the Missouri Delta Medical Center at Sikeston on Sept. 3, 2001, at the age of 42. Mr. Evans was a Christian, a heavy equipment operator for J.H. Berra Construction of St. Louis, a former officer for eight years with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, a retired Staff Sergeant for the Missouri National Guard Company C 1140th Engineering Battalion in Sikeston, where he served for 22 years, a member of Operating Engineer Local #513 and a resident of Dexter. Survivors include one son, Curt T. Evans of Dexter; his father, Bill Evans of Dexter; one brother, Bill A. Evans of Scottsdale, Ariz.; by five sisters, Carol Stayton and Sonya Parr both of Dexter, Cynthia Herren of Branson, Carmen Price of Maryville, Tenn., and Amy Johnston of Eaton Rapids, Mich. Besides his mother, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Heather Renee Evans. Visitation will be held at the Rainey Funeral Home in Dexter on Wednesday, Sept. 5, from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6, in the Rainey Funeral Chapel with Rev. Larry Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the Calvary Cemetery at Charleston with Rainey Funeral Home of Dexter in charge of arrangements.

Lyle Helm

Lyle Helm, the son of the late John F. and Bell Parrish Helm, was born in Shook, Mo. on Sept. 11, 1906 and died at the Three Rivers Healthcare North Campus in Poplar Bluff on March 10, 2002, at the age 95. Mr. Helm had lived in Kirkwood, Mo. for many years where he was employed by Wagner Electric as a foreman. He moved to Wappapello in 1987 and attended the Apostolic Church in Puxico. On April 17, 1937 he was united in marriage to Edith Eleda Haire. She preceded him death on Sept. 20, 1991. Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Leo, Herman and Norman Helm; and two sisters, Goldie Ricktor and Lucille Rickman. Visitation will be held at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Puxico on Wednesday, March 13 after 9:30 a.m. Funeral services will then be conducted at 11 a.m. in the Watkins & Sons Funeral Chapel with Rev. David Skinner of Puxico officiating. Interment will follow in the Helm Cemetery near Wappapello with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Puxico in charge of arrangements.

Johnny Slusher

Johnny V. Slusher, the son of the late Ira Frank Slusher and Villar Lenora Curtis Slusher, was born in Lamar, Ark., on Aug. 27, 1927, and died on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at the Three Rivers Healthcare North in Poplar Bluff, at the age of 74. He was united in marriage to Glenda Porter Slusher on Feb. 3, 1990, in Piggott, Ark. She survives of the home in Poplar Bluff. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Nadine Brewer. Mr. Slusher was a retired farmer and worked part time for LeGrand Feed and Fertilizer in Poplar Bluff. He loved fishing and camping. Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Cherlyn Waddell of Poplar Bluff; one son, Steve Slusher of Dudley; three stepsons, Keith Maloy of Poplar Bluff, Kevin Nelson of Berryville, Ark., and Chris Dicken of Poplar Bluff; two stepdaughters, Penny Badley of Blue Eye and Karen Hudson of Success, Ark.; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Boyd Slusher of Marston and Glen Slusher of Benton; three sisters, Geneva Warren of O'Fallon, Reba Vincent of Malden and Janice Temples of Alabama. Visitation will be held at the Landess Funeral Home in Malden on Wednesday, Sept. 5, from 1-3 p.m. Funeral services will follow in the Landess Funeral Chapel at 3 p.m. with Rev. Ivan Mekan officiating. Interment will be in the Bethany Cemetery in Campbell with Landess Funeral Home of Malden in charge of arrangements.

Marvin Speer

Marvin Speer of Advance was born Nov. 19, 1943, at Columbia, Ill., the son of the late Virgle and Geneva Hogue Speer and died on Sept. 2, 2001, at his home at the age of 57. Mr. Speer was a construction superintendent for Penzel Construction Co. in Jackson and served in the United States Army 182nd Airborne. He was united in marriage to Emma Wood on Oct. 25, 1996, at Marble Hill. She survives of the home in Advance. Other survivors include one son, Todd Speer of Highridge; one daughter, Stacy Speer of Malden; three sisters, Phyllis Salverson of Heath, Texas, Shirley Eggiman of Advance and Tammi Jackson of Dudley; and four grandchildren. Visitation was held in the Morgan Funeral Home in Advance on Tuesday, Sept. 4, from 4:30 - 8 p.m. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 11 a.m. in the Morgan Funeral Chapel with Rev. Scott Payne officiating. Interment followed in the Morgan Memorial Park in Advance with Morgan Funeral Home of Advance in charge of arrangements.

Jeanette Mund

H. Jeanette (Howard) Mund, daughter of the late Clarence and Bertha Howard was born May 21, 1936, and died at her home in Manchester on Aug. 22, 2001. She was a 1955 graduate of Bell City High School. She is survived by her husband, LeRoy Mund of the home; one son, Craig Mund of Florida; one daughter Connie Kimball and one grandson of Texas; four sisters, Sue Roper of Advance and Eloise Bell, Celeste Alexander and Venice Hickerson; and three brothers, J.L. Howard, Tollie Howard and Ottis Howard. She was preceded in death by one brother, Millard Howard. Funeral services were held at the Schrader Funeral Home in Manchester on Monday, Aug. 27, with interment in National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Unity Health Hospice, American Cancer Society or the First Baptist Church of Ellisville.

Beatrice Holland

Beatrice Holland, daughter of the late Connie Clarence Harkness and Heather Beatrice Williams Harkness, was born on Dec. 7, 1923 at Pontotoc, Miss. and died in the Crowley Ridge Care Center at Dexter on Sept. 2, 2001, at the age of 77. Mrs. Holland was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Dexter, a home-maker and a resident of Dexter. She was united in marriage to Ernest Lee Holland on July 15, 1944 at Hernando, Miss., he preceded her in death on May 24, 1972. Survivors include one son, Randy Holland of Sherwood, Ark.; one daughter, Sandra S. Akridge of Dexter; by three brothers, Lamar Harkness of Puxico, George Harkness of Dexter, and Lewis Harkness of Coal Hill, Ark.; by one sister, Doris Thompson of Dexter; by three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence Harkness and Wayne Harkness. Visitation will be in the Rainey Funeral Home in Dexter on Tues., Sept. 4 from 5 - 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Wed., Sept. 5 in the Rainey Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Chalk Bluff Cemetery in Dexter with Rainey Funeral Home of Dexter in charge of arrangements.

Pauline Jannett McCollom

Pauline Jannett McCollom, daughter of Lela Chambers Mann and the late Lowell Mann, was born at Holcomb on March 6, 1949 and died at the St. Francis Hospital in Cape Girardeau on Sept. 4, 2001 at the age of 52. Mrs. McCollom was employed at Purlator in Dexter for 20 years and was a member of the Second General Baptist Church in Dexter. On Sept. 13, 1989 she was united in marriage to Randy McCollom and had been a resident of Bloomfield since that time. Survivors include her husband, Randy McCollom of the home in Bloomfield; her mother, Lela Mann of Dexter; one daughter, Christy Roberts of Bloomfield; one step-son, Randall McCollom of Dexter; seven sisters, Imogene Parks of Hillman, Mich., Alice Burns of Cedar Hill, Mo., Barbara Griesmer of Jacksonville, Ark., Verta Faye Bass of Arnold, Jo Temples of Dudley, Patsy Reaves and Etheleen Montgomery of Dexter; and one grandson. Her father, Lowell Mann and one sister, Regina, preceded her in death. Visitation was held at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield from 6-8 p.m. on Thurs., Sept. 6. Funeral services were conducted on Fri., Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. in the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Chapel with Rev. Ray Rowland officiating. Interment followed in the Hagy Cemetery in Dexter. Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home of Bloomfield was in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Robert William Carter

Rev. Robert William Carter was born April 30, 1916 at Ola, Ark., the son of the late Jess Decater and Pearl Pratt Carter, and died on Wed., Sept. 5, 2001 at the St. Francis Hospital, at the age of 85. Rev. Carter was united in marriage to Reba Kelton on Sept. 27, 1941 at Keota, Okla. She survives of the home in Broken Arrow, Okla. He was a Freewill Baptist Minister licensed in 1957 and ordained in 1958. Rev. Carter pastored churches in Calif., Ark., Mo. and Okla.. He organized two Freewill Baptist Churches, in Dexter in 1976 and Boise City, Okla. in 1975. He retired in May of 1990. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, was a member of Northside Freewill Baptist Church and a 32nd Degree Mason. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Sue Grubbs of Broken Arrow, Okla.. and Carol Inklebarger of Ft. Smith, Ark.; one son, Jerry Carter of Laurie, Mo.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Alva Sampson. Funeral services will be held at the Hayhurst Funeral Chapel in Broken Arrow, Okla. on Fri., Sept. 7 at 2 p.m. with Rev. John Woods officiating, assisted by Rev. John Woods and Rev. Bill Kelton. Interment will follow at Park Grove Cemetery with Hayhurst Funeral Home of Broken Arrow in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
