Floy Rhodes

Floy N. Rhodes of Advance, the daughter of the late Seth P. and Lena Palfreeman Overbey, was born April 4, 1912 at Bell City and died Saturday, March 16, 2002 at Perry Oaks Manor in Perryville, at the age of 89. Mrs. Rhodes was a machine operator at H.I.S. Clothing Factory in Tenn. and was a member of First Baptist Church in Delta. She was united in marriage to Louis Storey on March 31, 1928, he preceded her in death. She then married Bill Rushing on July 18, 1949 and he preceded her in death. Mrs. Rhodes then was united in marriage to Charles Rhodes on Jan. 1, 1980 and he preceded her in death on March 24, 1992. Survivors include one daughter, Bonnie Strong of Sedgewickville, Mo.; two grandsons; and four great-grandchildren. Besides her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Visitation was held at the Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau on Monday, March 18 from 4 -8 p.m. Funeral services were held, today, Tuesday, March 19 at 1 p.m. in the Ford and Sons Funeral Chapel with Rev. Kenneth Strong officiating. Interment followed in the Stoderville Cemetery in Whitewater, Mo. with Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau in charge of arrangements.

John Powell

John Powell, the son of the late Enoch and Ella Helms Powell, was born near Puxico on April 8, 1907 and died at his home in Puxico on Sept. 5, 2001, at the age of 94. He had lived all his life in the Puxico area and had been a section worker for St. Louis-San Francisco (Frisco) Railroad line for 37 years. Mr. Powell was a Past Master of the Puxico Masonic Lodge, #596 A.F. & A.M. and had served several times as Worthy Patron of the Puxico Chapter #422 Order of the Eastern Star. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Puxico. On Sept. 3, 1931 he was united in marriage to Mildred Kitchen in Poplar Bluff. She preceded him in death on Oct. 28, 1994. Surviving are one daughter, Barbara Smith of Puxico; one son, Jerry Powell of Warrenton, Mo.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Catherine Lorraine Powell. Visitation will be held at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Puxico on Friday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Sat., Sept. 8 at 2 p.m. in the Watkins & Sons Funeral Chapel in Puxico with Rev. Marshall Link and Rev. Wiley McGhee, both of Puxico, officiating. Interment will follow in the Puxico Cemetery with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Puxico in charge of arrangements.

Helen Cotten

Helen Cotten, daughter of the late Lee Manion and Mary Rankin Manion, was born on May 28, 1912 at Pyletown and died on Sept. 3, 2001 at her residence in Titusville, Fla., at the age of 89. Mrs. Cotten was a homemaker and was previously from the Dexter and Malden area. On Nov. 1, 1929 she was united in marriage to Bill Cotten at Piggott, Ark. He preceded her in death on July 26, 1987. Survivors include one daughter, Maralee Phillips of Titusville, Fla.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Sarah Smyth. Graveside services will be conducted in the Dexter Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Sat., Sept. 8, with Rev. Wayne Dismuke officiating. Rainey Funeral Home of Dexter will be in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Messer

Shirley Jean Messer, daughter of the late Carl and Edith Scutter Curneal, was born at Essex on Aug. 29, 1934 and died at Dexter on Sept. 2, 2001 at the age of 67. Mrs. Messer had spent most of her life in the Bloomfield Community but for the last year had been a resident of Dexter. She was a retired employee of Elder Manufacturing Co. and attended the Assembly of God Church. She was married to Donald Messer, who preceded her in death on Oct. 29, 1993. One brother, James Harold also preceded her in death. Survivors include one son, Rick Bostic of Bloomfield; three brothers, Delmar Curneal of Troy, Mo., Lindell Curneal of Florissant, and Glenn Curneal of Chaffee; one sister, Wanda Alford of Bloomfield; and one grandson. Visitation was held at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield on Tues., Sept. 4, from 6 - 8 p.m. Funeral services were held on Wed., Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. in the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dale Hendrix officiating. Interment followed in the Walker Cemetery near Bloomfield. Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield in charge of arrangements.

Carl E. Conner

Carl E. Conner was born Oct. 23, 1929 at Wappapello and died at his residence in Puxico on Sunday, March 17, 2002, at the age of 72. He had lived in the Wappapello and Puxico areas all his life and was a farmer and timber worker. On Nov. 15, 1955, he was united in marriage to Wanda L. Waters and she survives of the home in Puxico. Other survivors include four sons, Jamie E. Conner, William D. Conner, Jackie D. Conner and Carl. J. Conner, all of Puxico; three daughters, Karen Riddell of Malden, Donna Fay Overton of Puxico and Darlene Warrick of Decatur, Ill.; six brothers, Harvey Conner of Sullivan, Ralph Conner of Toppenish, Wash., A.J. Conner of Louisiana, Mo., Claudie Conner of Troy, Francis Conner of Pendelton, Ore., and Roy Conner of Puxico; three sisters, Lorene Grimes and Margaret Jones, both of Dexter, and Betty Payne of Puxico; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Patrica Lynn Conner. Visitation will be held this evening, Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at 6 p.m. in the White-Sanders Funeral Home at Fisk. Funeral services will be conducted in the White-Sanders Funeral Chapel at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 20 with Rev. Tim Hedge officiating. Interment will follow in Little Brush Cemetery at Wappapello with White-Sanders Funeral Home of Fisk in charge of arrangements.

Jacob Williamson

Jacob Williamson, son of the late Jacob Ledford Williamson and Onvill Mary Hatchel Williamson, was born on Dec. 18, 1904 at Parma and died in the Missouri Delta Medical Center at Sikeston on Sept. 3, 2001 at the age of 96. Mr. Williamson was member of the United Pentecostal Church in Poplar Bluff, a retired farmer, a former resident of Dexter and currently resided in Sikeston. He was united in marriage to Edna Grubbs. She preceded him in death on March 20, 1984. Survivors include four sons, J.L. Williamson of Poplar Bluff, Dale Williamson of Denton, Texas, Ray Williamson of Bloomfield and Jerry Williamson of Millersville; by two daughters, Genevieve Jackson of Bernie and Fredia Green of Sikeston; by 29 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Gene Williamson. Visitation will be at the Rainey Funeral Home in Dexter on Wednesday, Sept. 5, from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, in the Rainey Funeral Chapel with Rev. David Hardin officiating. Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery with Rainey Funeral Home of Dexter in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Kizer

Thomas F. Kizer, the son of the late James and Allie Clark Kizer, was born in Ballard County, Ky. on Dec. 28, 1915 and died at the Ridgeview Nursing Home in Malden on Sept. 10, 2001, at the age of 85. Mr. Kizer was a retired farmer and had lived in Risco for many years and was a winter resident of Crystal River, Fla. On Oct. 7, 1939 he was united in marriage to Laura Mae Cato in Piggott, Ark. She preceded him in death on Feb. 15, 1987. Surviving are two sons, Charles Kizer of Clovis, N.M. and Thomas Kizer of Farmington Mills, Mich.; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Due to the traveling conditions, there is a tentative visitation set for Wednesday, Sept. 12 at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Parma. Call 573-357-4513 for details. Graveside funeral services will be held on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 11 a.m. in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Malden. Interment will follow with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Parma in charge of all arrangements.

Flossie Gregory

Flossie M. Gregory of Bell City, was born March 7, 1907 at Campbell, the daughter of the late James and Martha Wright Fish, and died Sept. 11, 2001 at St. Francis Medial Center in Cape Girardeau, at the age of 94. Flossie was a cook at Bell City Schools for several years and she also cooked in restaurants. She helped deliver many children in the community, baby-sat several for many years and was of the Pentecostal faith. She was united in marriage to Frank Gregory on Feb. 10, 1926 at Bell City, he preceded her in death on May 17, 1975. Survivors include one brother, Ike Fish of Lancaster, Calif.; three sisters, Esther Bell of Michigan, Junell Davis of Piggott, Ark., and Lorene Ramsey of Everett, Wash.; and two step-brothers, W.B. Lightfoot of Fayetteville, Ark. and J.R. Lightfoot of Bellville, Ill. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, one sister, one step-brother and one step-sister. Visitation will be held at the Morgan Funeral Home in Advance on Wednesday, Sept. 12 from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. in the Morgan Funeral Chapel at Advance with Geraldine Dell officiating and Bertha Newell assisting. Interment will follow in the Bell City Cemetery with Morgan Funeral Home of Advance in charge of all arrangements.
