Juldene Almond

Juldene Almond of Bloomfield, the daughter of the late Jim and Opal Lane Long, was born at Bloomfield on June 10, 1926 and died at Bloomfield on Jan. 15, 2002 at the age of 75. Mrs. Almond had spent all her life in the Bloomfield Community. She retired from Elder Manufacturing Company in Bloomfield in 1985 after working there for 37 years. She was of the Baptist faith. She was united in marriage to Thurman Almond on Dec. 6, 1941, he survives of the home in Bloomfield. Besides her husband, she is survived by one son, Mike Almond of Dexter; by two daughters, Judy Almond of Bloomfield and Connie Almond of Sikeston; by two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield from 6 - 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, Jan. 18 at 10 a.m. in the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Chapel with Rev. Kevin Eskew officiating. Interment will follow in the Bloomfield Cemetery with Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home of Bloomfield in charge of arrangements.

Joe Garland

Joe Garland of Malden, son of the late Jerry and Vevia Skelton Garland, was born Aug. 8, 1925 at Malden and died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002 in the Malden Nursing Center at the age of 76. Mr. Garland was a cotton ginner, a member and past deacon of the First Southern Baptist Church in Malden and retired from the Army National Guard. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, Air Force and Army, where he received the Meritorious Service Medal from then Gov. John Ashcroft. Joe also was an Adult Literacy Program Volunteer and a VISTA Volunteer, having worked with migrant workers. He was united in marriage to Margarete Basham Garland on July 1, 1947 at Marion, Ark., she survives. Besides his wife, Mr. Garland is survived by one daughter, Linda Barton of Crystal City, Mo.; by three brothers, Delmar Garland and Jay Garland, both of Malden, and Ray Garland of Canyon Lake, Texas; by two granddaughters; by three great-grandchildren; and by two sisters, Fay Carter of Paducah, Ky. and Flossie Beaird of Parma. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Paul Garland; and one sister, Adell Lanier. Visitation will be held at the Landess Funeral Home in Malden on Wednesday, Jan. 16 from 6 - 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, Jan. 17 at 2 p.m. in the Landess Funeral Chapel with Rev. Keith Garland officiating. Interment will follow at the Rosewood 1st Addition Cemetery in Malden with Landess Funeral Home of Malden in charge of arrangements.

Mickey James

Mickey Louise Bess James, age 77, of Dexter, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at the Missouri Southern Healthcare in Dexter. She was born in Marble Hill on Nov. 13, 1925, daughter of the late Andy Marion and Ida Frances Causey Cook. She married Chester Bess on May 13, 1944, and later married Paul D. James on June 25, 1988, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 9, 1990. Mrs. James was a member of the Church of Shalom in Poe. She is survived by three sons, Jack and Don Bess, both of Dexter, Kenneth Bess of Bloomfield; five daughters, Bonnie Jaco of Marble Hill, Betty Whitley and Sheila Bess, both of Dexter, Brenda Harlan of Essex, Janet Bracken of Bloomfield; 22 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, one infant daughter, six brothers and three grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today, Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at the Liley Funeral Home in Marble Hill. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at the funeral home with the Rev. Kenneth Cook officiating. Interment will follow in the Essex Cemetery.

Robert McClain

Robert 'Jiggs' McClain, son of the late Orville and Gertie Herrell McClain, was born at Bloomfield on Aug. 28, 1924 and died at his home in Bloomfield on Jan. 14, 2002, at the age of 77. Mr. McClain worked as a plasterer in St. Louis for 30 years, retiring and returning to Bloomfield in 1981 where he had been a resident since that time. He attended the Baptist Church in Bloomfield. Jiggs was united in marriage to Virginia Whitaker, she survives of the home in Bloomfield. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Robert McClain, Jr. of Wentzville, Mo. and Allen McClain of Cabool; by one daughter, Pamela Pierce of Bloomfield; by two brothers, Wilbur and Ray McClain, both of Bloomfield; by two sisters, Terzah Cope of St. Peters, Mo. and Violet Vollmer of O'Fallon; by 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. Visitation will be held at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield from 3 - 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, Jan. 17 at 10 a.m. in the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Bloomfield Cemetery with Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home of Bloomfield in charge of arrangements.

James R. Erving

James Ruben Erving, the son of Clara Hankins and the late Ruben Erving, was born in Crenshaw, Miss. on June 6, 1954 and died at the VA Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn. on Jan. 12, 2002, at the age of 47. Mr. Erving had lived in Essex before serving in the United States Army. He moved to Sikeston in 1977. He was a graduate of Richland High School, a member of the Greers Chapel Baptist Church and had served in the United States Army. He was also the recipient of the Golden Poet Award in 1987. Surviving are one son, Courtney Erving Baker of Cincinnati, Ohio; one daughter, Patricia Smooth of Malden; his mother and step-father, Clara and Charlie, Sr. Hankins of Sikeston; his maternal grandmother, Grace Wynn of Sikeston; four grandchildren; two step-brothers, Charlie Hankins, Jr. of Sikeston and Sheldon Hankins of Kansas City, Mo.; and one step-sister, Dearmond D. Wofford of Kansas City, Mo. Visitation will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19 from 12 - 1 p.m. at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Jan. 19 with Rev. Ronald Williams, Sr. of Sikeston officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunset of Memories Cemetery in Sikeston with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.

Vester C. Moore

Vester C. Moore of Piqua, Ohio, son of the late Jessie W. Moore and Bettie E. Kirkpatrick Moore, was born July 27, 1936 in McNairy County, Tenn. and died Jan. 6, 2002 at the V.A. Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, at the age of 65. Mr. Moore is survived by his companion, Maxine Greenbaum; one son, David Moore; one daughter, Sherry Fowler; two brothers, R.B. Moore and Vernice Moore; three sisters, Cordie Austin, Imogene Callins and Pauline Maness; three grandchildren, Jeremy Fowler, Regina Fowler and Jesse Moore; and one great-grandson, Dustin M. Fowler. Funeral services were conducted at the Casey Funeral Home in Henderson, Tenn. on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002 with Rev. Ronald Sells officiating. Interment followed at the Chester County Memory Gardens in Henderson. Casey Funeral Home of Henderson was in charge of arrangements.

Lloyd Kidd

Lloyd Kidd of Jackson, the son of the late Adam and Gladys Beck Kidd, was born Oct. 7, 1913 at Arbor, Mo. and died Jan. 12, 2002 at his home in Jackson, at the age of 88. Lloyd was a pipe fitter for Local #562, was of the Baptist faith, and a member of the Advance Masonic Lodge #590 AF & AM. He was united in marriage to Clara Kynion on Oct. 4, 1933 at Jackson, she survives of the home. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Paul Kidd of Jackson and Forrest Kidd of Cape Girardeau; by four daughters, Mary Lee Quinn and Patricia Galloway, both of Jackson, Peggy Jones of Chaffee and Linda McCullough of Plano, Texas; by two brothers, James Kidd of Gordonville and Lawrence Kidd of Delta; by one sister, Hazel Hitt of Bloomfield; by 14 grandchildren; by 30 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two grandsons, Steven Quinn and Tony Kidd, one brother and two sisters. Visitation was held on Monday, Jan. 14 at the Morgan Funeral Home in Advance from 5:30 - 8 p.m. with Masonic Services at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted, today, Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 1 p.m. in the Morgan Funeral Chapel with Rev. Lee Roy Quinn officiating. Interment will follow in the Morgan Memorial Park at Advance with Morgan Funeral Home of Advance in charge of arrangements.

Glenda Ruth Cunningham

Glenda Ruth Cunningham, a resident of Campbell and the daughter of Leo Cranford and Wanda Clayton Cranford, was born Sept. 25, 1940, in Paragould, Ark., and died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at Dexter at the age of 62. On April 18, 1958, she was united in marriage to Billy Wayne Cunningham, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 20, 1997. She was of the General Baptist faith. Survivors include three sons, James Cody Cunningham of Dexter, Vernon Wayne Cunningham of Campbell, and Billy Edward Cunningham of Circle City; one daughter, Linda Hope Hill of Gibson; 38 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Eveline Myers of Gideon, Marion "Susie" Louella Hobbs of Senath, and Gertie Jean Cook of Columbia; three brothers, Thomas Allen Cranford of Columbia, Terry Leo Cranford of Senath, and Glen Sherman Cranford of Kansas City. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 24, 2003, at Harvest Assembly of God Church, 119 Trotter Street, Essex, with Pastor Mike Brown officiating. Landess Funeral Home of Malden is in charge of arrangements.
