Lura D. Stevens

Lura Dell Stevens, 77, of Advance was born July 26, 1925, in Mississippi, the daughter of the late Tony and Ola Keeton Bradshaw and died Aug. 15, 2002, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. She was married to M.M. Hudson, and he preceded her in death in 1978. She then married George Stevens, who preceded her in death on Jan. 25, 2001. Mrs. Stevens was retired from the Inland Shoe Factory in Advance where she had worked for over 20 years. Survivors include one son, Gary Hudson of Advance; one sister, Betty Jo McCain of Advance; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A brother and sister preceded her in death. Visitation was held from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at the Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at the Morgan Funeral Chapel with Rev. Wayne Page officiating. Interment followed at Morgan Memorial Park in Advance.

Claude Collier

Claude Carroll Collier, 69, a resident of Jackson, formerly of Mississippi County, died at 11:33 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. He was born Oct. 6, 1932, in Mt. Vernon, Ill., to the late Esco and Corona Glaus Collier. He had lived in Mississippi County most of his life moving to Jackson in 1980. He had been employed as a salesman until his retirement and recently had begun working with Clark Construction Company in Cape Girardeau. He was a member of Shady Acres Church of Christ in Sikeston. On May 27, 1955, he married Linda Kellett who survives of the home. Other survivors are one son, Kevin Collier of Dexter; two daughters, Jill Collier Burton of Charleston and Jennifer Collier Hipp of St. Louis County; two sisters, Patricia Ann Seib of Poplar Bluff and Willa Jean Mattix of Houston, Texas; and six grandchildren. One infant brother preceded him in death. Visitation was held from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston where funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. today, Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, with Pat Hogan, minister of the Shady Acres Church of Christ in Sikeston, officiating. Interment will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home.

Bertha Hardesty

Bertha Hardesty, 87, was born July 14, 1915, in Bollinger County, the daughter of the late Zeke Loughary, and died Aug. 15, 2002, at the Advance Nursing Center. Mrs. Hardesty was a homemaker and a member of the Balch Church near Zalma. On June 9, 1986, she was united in marriage to John Hardesty in Stoddard County, and he survives of the home. Other survivors include three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son and a daughter. Visitation was held from 8:30 - 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at the Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance. The funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at the Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance with Rev. Pete Welker officiating. Interment followed at Berrong Cemetery near Gipsy.

Clarence O. Lacy

Clarence O. Lacy, born June 19, 1924, at Joiner, Ark., died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at his residence in Ellsinore. He was a member of the Bethel Chapel Church and formerly worked for Batson Construction. On Oct. 25, 1945, he was united in marriage to Bessie Henderson who preceded him in death on Dec. 26, 1969. Survivors include six sons, Dennis Lacy, of Bell City, David A. Lacy, Gary L. Lacy, Crockett Lacy, Eric Lacy, all of Poplar Bluff, and Ronald E. Lacy, of Bell City; one daughter, Bertha J. Lacy, of Ellsinore; two sisters, Ella B. Moss, of St. Louis, and Clyte Kearby of Poplar Bluff; one brother, Bill Lacy of Harrisburg, Ark.; and 17 grandchildren. Visitation was held at 6:00 p.m., Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at White-Sanders Funeral Home in Fisk. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at White-Sanders Funeral Home in Fisk with Rev. Charles Kelly and Rev. Devon Black officiating. Interment followed at Poplar Bluff Cemetery.

Lamona Backus

Lamona Backus, daughter of the late Henry DeWitt Becker and Agnes Braswell Becker, was born on Sept. 15, 1939, at London, Ark., and died at her residence near Dexter on Aug. 17, 2002, at the age of 62. Mrs. Backus was a member of the Dexter Church of Christ, had done cleaning in area homes and was a resident of Dexter. She was united in marriage to Jerry Lee Backus on Dec. 29, 1963, at Bell City and to this union three children were born. Mr. Backus preceded her in death on June 25, 1995. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Melissa Backus of Jackson, and Todd and Amy Backus of Puxico; by one daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Steve Ward of Dexter; by two brothers, Desmond Becker and Dalton Becker, both of Dexter; by four grandchildren, Bradley Backus, Brandon Backus, Kyle Ward and Matt Ward. Visitation was held after 5:00 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. today, Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, in the Dexter Church of Christ with Michael Yates, Jim Faughn, and Dale Grissom officiating. Interment followed in the Hagy Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the 18 Fore Life Cancer Support Group in care of Scott Kruse, 10632 Apache Village, Dexter, Mo. 63841.

Joseph E. Sater

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Joseph E. Sater, 91, of Kingsville, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, at his home.
Cremation is under the direction of Ben Cast & Son-Wood Funeral Home in Holden.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Johnson County Hospice in care of the funeral home.

J. Loyd Carter

J. Loyd Carter, son of the late Jessie Carter and Irene Walker Carter, was born on Jan. 17, 1907, at Ellsinore and died in the Missouri Southern Health Care at Dexter on Aug. 16, 2002, at the age of 95. Mr. Carter was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bernie, a farmer, and a resident of Bernie. He was united in marriage to Edith Cates on April 17, 1927, at Ellsinore, and she survives of the home in Bernie. Other survivors include two sons, Ivan Willis Carter of Bonne Terre, Mo., and Sherman Loyd Carter of Bernie; three daughters, Verna Roberts of Wappapello, Leatha McElvoy of Springfield, Mo., and Brenda Collins of Lakeland, Fla.; one brother, Tony Carter of St. Clair; one sister, Bertha Wise of St. Louis; 22 grandchildren; and over 100 great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Freeman Luke Carter, one daughter, Noami Dockins, seven brothers, three sisters, and one grandson. Visitation was held from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie. Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. John Knapp officiating. Interment followed in the Bernie Cemetery.

Gladys Wamble

Gladys O. Wamble, the daughter of the late Jesse and Alice Reed Ross, was born in Dexter, Mo., on AUG. 17, 1911, and died at Westland Convalescent Center in Westland, Mich., on Aug. 16, 2002, at the age of 90. Mrs. Wamble was a homemaker and had moved to Detroit, Mich., in 1937. On Dec. 1, 1929, she was married to Cecil J. Wamble in Dexter, and he preceded her in death on June 1, 1999. Surviving are one son, Jesse Franklin Wamble of Lewisburg, Tenn.; three daughters, Pauline Turowski of Dearborn Heights, Mich., Glenda Boyd of Lincoln Park, Mich., JoAnn Patrick of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 20 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Virgil Ross of Royal Oak, Mich. She was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter with Rev. Phil Warren of Dexter officiating. Interment will follow in the Triplett Cemetery near Dexter with Watkins & sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.

Allen Dickinson

Allen Dickinson, 72, son of the late Leslie Benjamin and Alma Van Matre Dickinson, was born Dec. 30, 1929, at McGee and died July 30, 2002, near Zalma. Mr. Dickinson was a member of Shady Dell General Baptist Church at McGee. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean War, and was head sawyer at Lemming Lumber Company in Cape Girardeau for over 40 years. He was also a member of the Zalma Masonic Lodge #545. Survivors include one son, Steve Dickinson of Zalma; one brother, Hugh Dickinson of Bardwell, Ky.; two sisters, Carmen Randolph of Wood River, Ill., and Carol Dickinson of McGee; and two grandchildren. A sister and two brothers also preceded him in death. Visitation was held from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, and a Masonic service was held at 7:00 p.m. at the Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance with interment following at Brush Creek Cemetery near Arab.
