Dayton Whitehead

Dayton Whitehead, son of the late William Whitehead and Suda Crump Whitehead, was born on July 17, 1920, at Bernie and died in the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center at Poplar Bluff on Aug. 22, 2002, at the age of 82. Mr. Whitehead was a veteran of World War II serving in the army, a carpenter, a resident of Bernie, and of the Baptist faith. He was united in marriage to Lura Imogene Boyd on May 19, 1947, at Piggott, Ark. She preceded her husband in death on May 15, 2001. Survivors include one son, Bobby Whitehead of Bernie; two daughters, Sharon Stevens and Derretta Patrick, both of Bernie; one brother, Vernis Whitehead of Metamora, Mich.; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Stevens of Bernie and Casey Williams of Dexter; three great-grandchildren, Kristin Stevens and Ashlyn Stevens, both of Bernie, and Bailee Williams of Dexter. He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. Friends may call at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie starting at 1:00 p.m. today, Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, in the Rainey-Mathis Chapel with Pastor Dale Hartle officiating. Interment will follow in the Smith-Stevenson Cemetery, Rural Route Dexter.

Cynthia Lange

Cynthia G. Lange, was born June 18, 1961 at Sikeston and died August 8, 2002, at her apartment in St. Paul, MN., at the age of 41. Mrs. Lange attended Northwest Missouri State University and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia. She worked for the Department of Family Services in Kansas City before moving to Rhinelander, WI., to work for the County Social Services. She studied a nursing in Milwaukee where she earned her RN degree in 1991. She worked as a nurse in Milwaukee, Kansas City and Minneapolis. Survivors include her mother and step-father, Laura and Marv Wells; her brother Steven Pollock; her aunt, Mary Thorn and many other family members. She was preceded in death by her husband Peter Lange, and her father Dale Pollock. A memorial service will be held at the West Pleasant Valley Church near Bloomfield at 10 a.m. on August 24, 2002. Burial will be in that cemetery. In lieu of Flowers the family suggests donations to Mothers Against Drugs at One Great River, PO Box 44349, Shreveport, LA, 71134-4349.

Donald Dunivan

Rev. Donald G. Dunivan, son of Elva Stroup and the late William Lester Dunivan, was born July 27, 1944 and died August 19, 2002 at the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. Mr. Dunivan was a member of the Oak Grove Church and was a former pastor of Balch Church near Zalma. He was united in marriage to Lorraine Barnhart on July 26, 1982 at St. Louis. She survives of the home. Other survivors include: his mother, Elva Stroup of Puxico; four sons, Donny Dunivan, of Dowagiac, MI., Darrell Dunivan, Dale Dunivan, and Geno Dunivan, all of St. Louis; one step-son, Christopher Parson, of Carson City, MI.; one brother, Danny Dunivan, of Advance; four sisters, Dean Stroup, of Advance, Sherry Morris of Bernie, Kay Sullender and Rhonda Loughary, both of Michigan, 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 5:30 - 8 p.m., Wednesday, August 21 at the Morgan Funeral Home in Advance, The funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m., Thursday, August 22 at the Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance with the Rev. Kenny Stroup officiating. Interment will follow at the Oak Ridge Cemetery near Advance.

Bob Harris

Leonard R. 'Bob' Harris, son of Clifton Pearl Harris and Louise Alma Wilson, was born on November 8, 1930 in Illmo and died Monday August 19, 2002 at his residence in Dexter. Mr. Harris was a U.S. Air Force veteran and had served in the Korean War and was a trainmaster for the Cotton Belt Railroad Company. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff, the H.O. Grauel Masonic Lodge number 672 in Cape Girardeau, and the Ainad Shrine in Belleville, Ill. On June 7, 1953, he married Joyce Marie Eakin at Illmo. She survives of the home in Dexter. Other survivors include one brother, Charles Harris, of Poplar Bluff; and one sister Elizabeth Shawan, of Poplar Bluff. The visitation will be from 5-8 p.m., Tuesday, at the Amick-Burnett Funeral Home in Sikeston. Following the visitation at 6:30 p.m. will be a Masonic service. The funeral will be at 11 a.m., following a 10 a.m., visitation Wednesday, at the First Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff with Dr. William Vail officiating. Interment will follow at the Poplar Bluff Cemetery in Poplar Bluff.

Helen D. Vieth

Helen Dawson Vieth, 87, of Bernie, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002. Mrs. Vieth was a member of the White Oak Grove General Baptist Church. She was married to W.E. Vieth, who survives of the home. Other survivors include three daughters, Kathryn Keasler of Bernie, Carolyn Lutes of Blytheville, Ark., Peggy Cox of Houma, La.; two sons, Bill Vieth of Bernie, and Roger Vieth of Houston; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, at White Oak Grove General Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, at White Oak Grove General Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Pennington officiating. The family will receive visitors at the family home Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002. Interment will follow at Chalk Bluff Cemetery at Dexter. Memorials may be made to White Oak Grove General Baptist Church.

Vincent Oxley

Vincent Edward Oxley, son of the late Floyd Oxley and Mae Vincent Oxley, was born on Aug. 28, 1921, at Marshfield, Mo., and died at his residence in Bernie on Aug. 16, 2002, at the age of 80. Mr. Oxley attended the United Methodist Church of Bernie, was a college professor at Central Missouri State University of Warrensburg, and was a resident of Bernie. He was united in marriage to Loreda Charles on May 6, 1941, in Malden. She preceded her husband in death on Aug. 7, 1998. Survivors include two sons, Charles Oxley of Cape Girardeau and Reggie Oxley of St. Augustine, Fla; one daughter, Kathie Peoples of Phoenix, Ariz.; two step-sisters Clara Harvey of Campbell and Mary Bennett of Qulin; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. today, Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. Susan Marner-Sides officiating. Interment will follow in the Bernie Cemetery.

Ida Kinney

Ida Novella Kinney, daughter of the late William Green Kinney and Martha Kruse Kinney, was born on Feb. 29, 1916, at Dexter and died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, in the Cypress Point Health Care in Dexter at the age of 86 years. Miss Kinney was a member of the First Baptist Church in Dexter where she had taught adult Sunday school. She attended the public schools of Dexter and was a graduate of Arkansas State University and George Peabody College. An avid supporter of the Missouri State Teachers Association and the Dexter C.T.A., she was a board member for the Department of Classroom Teachers, past-president of the Dexter C.T.A., a charter member of the Beta Zeta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star #311, where she had served as District Deputy Grand Matron of the 50th District, and had worked with the Rainbow Girls. Miss Kinney began her teaching career in Frisco, Dudley and Bertrand. She taught elementary grades and music in Kennett. She also taught fourth grade in the Dexter public schools for 40 years. She was honored on her retirement by the Southeast Missouri Teachers Association for her dedicated service to education. Survivors include her sister and brother-in-law Onieta and Judge Paul McGhee of Dexter. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Lincoln Kinney. Visitation was held from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter. An Eastern Star service was conducted at 7:00 p.m. Saturday. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. Don Kennedy officiating. Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery.

James Williams

James Leo Williams, son of the late William Harrison Williams and Lucy Livingston, was born on June 18, 1931 at Dexter and died in the Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau on August 15, 2002 at the age of 71. Mr. Williams attended the First General Baptist Church in Bloomfield. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the Korean War. He was also a retired boiler maker for Monarch Steel in the Bay area of California and was a resident of Dexter. He was united in marriage to Wanda Belcher Jones on April 2, 1989 at Powe. Mrs. Williams survives of the home in Dexter. Aside from his wide, he is survived by three step-sons, John Paul Jones, Sr., of Rector, Ark., Ronnie Lee Jones and Larry B. Jones, both of Bloomfield; one step-daughter, Wanda Sue Bellers, of Piggott, Ark., by two sisters, Clorine Shipman and Theota Litzler, both of Dexter; by 10 step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren. Aside from his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Lee Williams and by one sister, Marie Allstun. Visitation was from 6-8 p.m., Saturday, August 17, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m., Sunday, August 18, in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. Kevin Eskew officiating. Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery.

Thelbert Leo 'PeeWee' Maddox

Thelbert Leo 'PeeWee' Maddox, son of the late Olen L. Maddox and Marlue Stockton Maddox, was born on April 18, 1943, at Parma and died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at the John J. Pershing VA Hospital in Poplar Bluff. Mr. Maddox was a veteran of the U.S. Army, served in Viet Nam, and was a member of the American Legion and VFW, in Malden. He was of the Nazarene faith. Survivors include one brother, Delbert Maddox of Malden; one niece; one nephew; and one great-niece. Visitation was held at 6:00 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at Bradshaw Funeral Home in Malden. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at the Bradshaw Chapel in Malden with Rev. Andrew Lovins officiating. Interment followed at Memorial Park Cemetery in Malden with military rites.
