Maurine Poage Achauer

WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- Maurine Poage Achauer, 93, of Warrensburg, a long-time civic leader in Warrensburg, died Saturday, May 23, 2009, at the Country Club Care Center, Warrensburg, from complications of COPD.
Maurine pursued her life with zest, had a passion for bringing people of the community together and an appetite for knowledge. Her home was a place of stimulating thinking and ideas, groundwork planning, dreaming and challenges to grow Warrensburg.
"Anything I have came from this community, and I like the idea of giving back. But it takes more than one person to make it work. It's people working together who make it better for everyone, " she once said.
Even in her last few years, she demonstrated an indomitable spirit, ever challenging those she met to improve their lives and contribute to their world.
The only child of Dr. Rubin P. Poage, DVM, and Ada Carver Poage, she was born June 25, 1915. She completed high school as valedictorian and was the piano accompanist at her own graduation. She earned her bachelor's degree in English and speech from Truman State University and received the outstanding woman graduate award.
Her master's degree was in guidance and counseling from the University of Missouri. She took additional university work at the University of Wisconsin and Minnesota. She was acting dean of women at Truman State the summer of 1937 and first director of guidance at Moberly Junior College from 1937-1939.
She earned her doctorate in educational psychology and measurements in 1942 at the University of Nebraska and was a registered psychologist in Missouri. She was a counselor with a private vocational guidance clinic in Kansas City in 1941-1942.
Maurine married Reynolds Achauer, R.Ph. in January 1942, and together they owned Vernaz Drug Store and the Annex Restaurant in Warrensburg. Reynolds died in July 1969. They had two children, Bruce M. Achauer, M.D., of Long Beach, Calif., who died in November 2002, and Ann Achauer Maidment, R.N., of Toldeo, Ohio.
Bruce's wife, Tamara, survives in California, near their two daughters, Allison (Timothy) of Los Angeles, and Hilary (Dave) of San Diego. Ann and her husband, Tom, of Ohio, have two children, Matt (Kristin) of Portland, Ore., and Sarah-Kate Bozza (Chad) of Atlanta. Maurine has six great-grandchildren.
Some of the many boards and committees Maurine has served include: Missouri Citizens for the Arts; Safety and Health Hall of Fame International; a founding committee member for the building of the Walton Football Stadium at UCM; Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity Foundation trustee and treasurer.
She contributed the funds to build the White Rose Pavilion at the National Sigma Tau Gamma Headquarters in Warrensburg and the fraternity named the 1987 National Conclave in her honor.
She was a 50-year-plus member of P.E.O. Chapter HW in Warrensburg; a life member of the Western Missouri Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary; a Professional Advisory Committee and board member of Johnson County Community Health Services; Warrensburg Community Betterment Committee; President Society of UCM; 52-year member of Delta Zeta National Sorority, and "Dr. A." served as adviser to the local campus chapter for many years.
She was an active alumna with the University of Nebraska, University of Missouri and Truman State University; UCM Mule Train member; Whiteman Air Force Base Military Affairs Committee member; Air Force Base Community Council member; Officers Wives Club honorary member; and in November 2008, the air base named the Maurine Achauer Distinguished Visitor Lounge in her honor; past president of AAUW; Girl Scout Executive Committee; Club Scout den mother; American Psychological Association; Johnson County Mental Health Board; longtime Chamber of Commerce member, serving on the Depot Renovation Committee and Education Committee.
She served on the first KMOS-TV and KCMW-FM Community Advisory Board at UCM and was past president; Warrensburg Traffic Commission member; Nelson Art Gallery Friends of Art; ABC Club; Warrensburg Investment Club; chair of the Governors Advisory Council on Aging; Republican of the Year for 1992 in Johnson County; Adult Literacy Committee member; Junior Achievement board member; member of the First Christian Church of Warrensburg; recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from UCM in 1994; and has bequeathed her lifelong home on South Holden to the university.
Maurine was an accessible mentor to many and leaves a host of devoted close friends, both young and old. She was a public figure, yet carried out countless acts of private generosity, giving counsel and support to many whose names will never be known.
Her funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at the First Christian Church, Warrensburg, with the Rev. Jerry Basye officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home in Warrensburg.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Patricia Schiverton Endowed Chair of Nursing through the University of Central Missouri Foundation, Warrensburg. Contributions may be left in care of the funeral home.

Betty J. Bird

WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The funeral for Betty J. Bird will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 30, 2009, at Williams Funeral Chapel in Warrensburg, with the Rev. David Mifflin of Fellowship Baptist Association officiating.
Interment will follow in Warrensburg Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Saturday at the funeral home, one hour prior to the service.
Mrs. Bird, 77, of Warrensburg, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at her residence, surrounded by her family.
Betty Jean Marr was born March 27, 1932, in Warrensburg, the daughter of Everett and Minnie Grace (Rance) Marr. She graduated from College High School in Warrensburg. She married Robert Lewis “Bob” Bird July 4, 1952, in Leeton. In 1972, the couple moved from Warrensburg to Concordia, returning to Warrensburg in 1988.
Betty was employed at Unitog in Warrensburg at one time. Later, she worked for Rival Manufacturing in Sweet Springs. She was a member of Mid-Mo Clowns as BB The Clown and Elk Ladies. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary, having just received a 20-year continuous service award. She loved traveling with her husband, Bob, time spent with family and dancing. She was also a member of College High All School Reunion Planning Committee.
Survivors include her son, Robert Bird and his wife, Debbie of Warrensburg; 2 grandchildren, Benjamin Bird of Warrensburg and Lance Randolph of Freeman, Mo.; a great-grandchild, Tucker Randolph; 2 sisters, Alberta Grandestaff of Higginsville and Sue Fisher and her husband, Bobby of Warrensburg; 4 brothers, Bob Marr and his wife, Ann; Charles Marr and his wife, Bonnie; and Marion Marr and his wife, Edda, all of Warrensburg; and John Marr and his wife, Sue, of Peculiar; also, special friend, Herb Fizer of Warrensburg and numerous nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her husband May 15, 2001; both parents and a brother, William L. Marr.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Johnson County Cancer Foundation or a Memorial Fund being established for the education of Betty’s great grandchildren, in care of the funeral home.

Helen Pope

HOLDEN, Mo. -- Helen L. Pope, 66, of Holden, died Monday, May 25, 2009, at the Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg.
She was born April 8, 1943, in Kingsville, the daughter of Lowell and Lena Pearl (McEachron) Earl.
Helen graduated from Kingsville High School in 1961 and married Melvin Pope Jr. Sept. 28, 1962.
She had lived in the Holden and Kingsville communities all her life. She had worked as a bookkeeper for Comfort Equipment Co. in Holden, clerk at Holden AF Supermarket, and a clerk for Chaney's Service Station in Holden. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include her husband, Melvin Pope Jr., of the home; one son, William Todd Pope, Chilhowee; one daughter, Lisa Ann Gonzalez and husband, Reon, of Warrensburg; one sister, Wanda Gordon, Lee's Summit; and one daughter, Kaitlyn Gonzalez.
Cremation is planned.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at the Ben Cast & Son-Wood Funeral Home in Holden, with the Rev. John McRoy officiating.

Lodoska "Dusty" Wilson

CLINTON, Mo. -- Lodoska "Dusty" Wilson, 55, of Clinton, died Thursday, May 21, 2009, at Clinton Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Sept. 9, 1953, in Kansas City, the daughter of John C. and Freda (Holler) Hunsperger.
She married Ronald D. Wilson March 21, 1974, in Lee's Summit. He preceded her in death June 21, 2003.
Dusty was a 1971 graduate of Ruskin High School. She had owned Bristol Ridge Archery, an archery shop and indoor range, in Warrensburg. She retired as officer manager at Max Swisher Skyhaven Airport in October 2008 after 25 years of service.
Dusty is survived by a sister, Grace Clark of Deepwater; a brother, John W. Hunsperger of Kansas City; a son-in-law, Charles Beaudin of Clinton; a stepdaughter, Robin Skidmore of Wichita, Kan.; two grandsons, Ethan Skidmore and Jacob Skidmore; and a granddaughter, Chandra Schumacher.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Wendy Beaudin, Oct. 7, 1998.
A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 30, at the Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home, Warrensburg, with the Rev. Bill Runyon officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Heartland Hospice.

Herbert A. Kendrick

WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- Herbert A. Kendrick, 56, of Warrensburg, died Monday, May 25, 2009, at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City.

He was born May 7, 1953, the son of Herbert W. and Dorothy (Turpen) of Kendrick.
Mr. Kendrick was a truck driver for J&M; Trucking of Centerview.
He is survived by two sons, Michael Kendrick of Centerview and Matthew Fredricks of Hesperia, Calif.; two daughters, Shelia Reardon and Sunshine Bentley, both of Warrensburg; his mother, Dorothy Kendrick of Warrensburg; three brothers, Ronnie Kendrick, Clifford Kendrick and Raymond Kendrick, all of Warrensburg; three sisters, Irma Kendrick, Harrisonville, Karma Deardorff, Warrensburg, and Brenda Kendrick, Windsor; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Lonnie Kendrick; and three sisters, Shirley Newsom, Janice Baldwin and Lois McCubbin.
His funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Warrensburg Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Herbert A. Kendrick Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home.

Louis Alec Doerflinger

HOLDEN, Mo. -- Louis Alec Doerflinger, 56, Galva, Illinois, formerly of Chilhowee and Warrensburg, died Tuesday, July 5, 2011, at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria, Ill.

Jill Yvonne Harden Younce

KNOB NOSTER, Mo. -- Jill Yvonne Harden Younce, 48, of Knob Noster, died Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, at her residence.
She was born July 15, 1963, in Sacramento, Calif., the daughter of Robert Ray and Margaret (McClanahan) Harden.
On Aug. 21, 2010, she was married to Frank Younce in Knob Noster, Mo.
Jill was a graduate of Knob Noster High School, class of 1981. She was a member of Heartland Church and Northside Christian Church.
Her hobbies included horseback riding, painting on t-shirts and sweatshirts.
She is survived by her husband, Frank, two step-sons; Mark Younce of Knob Noster, and David Younce of Sedalia, one sister; Robin Rhinehart of Knob Noster, nephew; Aaron Snyder of Ogden, Utah, and eight grandchildren.
Jill was preceded in death by her parents.
The funeral will be at 5:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 21, 2011 at Heartland Church, Highway 23, north of Knob Noster, with Chaplain Gene Fox and Pastor Derek Steinmuller officiating.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Preferred Hospice and can be left at Sweeney-Phillips and Holdren Funeral Home in Warrensburg.
