Becky Jean Husky

Becky Jean Huskey of Sullivan, formerly of St. Louis, passed away Thursday, January 6, 2000 at the age of 29 years.

Becky was born on September 27, 1970 in St. Louis, Missouri to Glenda (Hicks) Huskey and the late Vernon Frederick Huskey. She was raised in St. Louis, and did not move to the Sullivan area until 1999. She was known as a very happy and loving person who appreciated the simple things in life. Becky was extremely challenged throughout her lifetime, but she always found a way to “come out on top.” She truly had a way of attaching herself to everyone who met her. Those who came into her life found Becky to be very precious.

She is survived by her mother, Glenda Huskey of Sullivan; one brother, Ronald Huskey and wife, Kathy, of St. Louis; one stepbrother, Dennis Harman and wife, Ruby, of Sullivan; two sisters, Christina Timmermann and husband, Tracy, of Sullivan and Susan Rodgers of Arnold, Missouri; other relatives, and friends. Becky was preceded in death by her father, and also one brother, Daniel Huskey.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 11, 2000 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Scott Perry officiating. Interment was in New St. Marcus Cemetery, 7901 Gravois Road, Affton, Missouri.

Irene F. Kane

Irene F. Kane of Sullivan passed away Saturday, January 8, 2000 at the age of 88 years.

Irene was born a twin on October 21,1911 the late Edward and Effie Mae (Houston) Hulsey at Steelville, Missouri. On December 27, 1945 Irene was married to Frank Kinovsky at the First Presbyterian Church. Irene and two of her sisters, Marietta and Roseanna made news when they shared the same wedding gown at their respective weddings which all took place in the Presbyterian Church. In 1968 Mr. Kinovsky changed his name to Kane for business purposes and they became Mr. and Mrs. Kane. They made their home in the Chicago, Illinois area for many years where Mrs. Kane was employed as a bookkeeper for the Spiegel Catalog Company. For the past 20 years Irene made her home in Sullivan where she was a member of the Tuesday Club and the First Presbyterian Church. Irene enjoyed gardening, playing cards, crafts and crocheting. Irene’s twin sister, Nadine Immekus passed away one year to the day on January 8, 1999.

She is survived by two sisters, Marietta Howk and husband Art of Sullivan, Roseanna Netzela of Sunrise Beach, Missouri, one brother in-law, Buddy Immekus of Sullivan, six nephews, Dana Wilcox and wife Sharon of Florissant, Albert Netzela II and wife Patty of Sunrise Beach, Missouri, Winfred Immekus and wife Rita of San Antonio, Texas, Douglas Immekus of Mayfield, Kansas, Paul Howk and wife Nancy of Redbud, Illinois, Ray Howk of St. Louis, one niece, Sharon Kettlehake of Sullivan, great- nieces and nephews, Jeanie Marie, Mark, Michelle, Jennifer, and Karen Wilcox of Florissant, Albert Netzela III, Dawn and Arianna Netzela all of Sunrise Beach, Missouri, Richard Kettlekhake of Germany, other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services were conducted 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 10, 2000 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Dale Jackson officiating. Interment was in Pleasant Point Cemetery in Steelville, Missouri. Arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home.

Joseph Christy

Joseph Earl Christy of Sullivan passed away Sunday, January 2, 2000 at the age of 66 years.

Mr. Christy was born on April 10, 1933 in Segola, Michigan to the late Earl and Victoria (St. Onge) Christy. He was raised in Michigan, where he was employed initially by a vault company in Ironwood, and later by a mining company within the state. He honorably served in the United States Army for three years, and, having defended his country in the Korean Conflict, was awarded the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars. On March 21, 1953 he was united in marriage to Joan Peck in Ironwood, Michigan, and to this union two children were born. He and his family moved to Sullivan in 1962, where he worked as a foreman for the Meramec Mining Company until its closing in 1977. Mr. Christy then became involved in the construction of a wing at the Sullivan Community Hospital, and later worked at the local VFW post. He especially enjoyed hunting and fishing, and also took pleasure in cabinet making and other woodworking projects. He practiced the Catholic faith since childhood, and was a member of the Russell Schmidt VFW Post 3987 and also the Fraternal Order of Eagles Arie #3781. He was a loving husband, and a good father.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, of Sullivan; one son, Joseph Christy, and wife, Barbara, of Skiatook, Oklahoma; one daughter, Susan Colvin, and husband, Dennis, of St. Louis; one brother, Peter Christy, and wife, Kitty, of Kinney, Minnesota; three sisters, Luella Nissila of Sturtevant, Wisconsin, Joyce Keast, and husband, Eldred, of Marenesco, Michigan, and Lillian Mueller, and husband, Chuck, of Royal Oak, Michigan; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 5, 2000 from St. Anthony Church in Sullivan with the Reverend Father Theodore Brunnert officiating. Interment was in the St. Anthony Parish Cemetery.

Marie Woodruff

Daisy Marie Woodruff of Bourbon, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, January 5, 2000 at the age of 87 years.

Daisy, as she was known by her family and friends, was born January 5, 1913 at Mitchell, Missouri to the late Louis and Martha (Watson) Furry. She was one of 13 children and spent her early years in the Viburnum/Flat River area where the family farmed and her father worked in the lead mines. At the age of 19 Daisy moved to St. Louis. It was at this time she chose to be called by her middle name “Marie.” She said, “they always named the cow, “Daisy.” She was known by “Marie” the rest of her life. While living in St. Louis, she worked as a nanny and housekeeper. On December 14, 1935 she married Teddy Woodruff in St. Louis and continued living there until 1939. At that time, along with their young daughter, June, they moved to Argo, Missouri, where Marie cared for the farm while Teddy commuted to his job in St. Louis. Two children, Margie and Theodore, were born at this farm. In 1944 the family moved a few miles away to the family farm where JoAnn was born. They operated a Grade A dairy farm with a flock of 400 laying hens. It was there that Marie spent many hours cleaning and packing eggs. She always raised a large garden and strawberry patch, and many beautiful flowers. Marie also spent many hours making quilts and embroidering linens that her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will enjoy for many years. Strangers were always welcomed, and no child ever went away without a “jelly bread” sandwich. She enjoyed caring for the elderly in the community, and providing a home for her younger brothers and sisters on extended vacations. Marie was raised in the Church of Christ. However, in 1939 she became a charter member of the Bourbon Seventh Day Adventist Church, where she remained a faithful member. Marie’s most enjoyable time was reading her Bible, which she had read through many times. She was a devoted Christian, wife of 61 years, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In April of 1995 she and her husband left the farm where they lived for 54 years and became residents of Combs Residential Care, where she remained until her hospitalization on January 4, 2000.

She is survived by one son, Theodore Woodruff of Creighton, Missouri; three daughters,
June Mathews and husband, Elasco, of Bourbon, Missouri, Margie Gumb and husband, Ray, of Burwell, Nebraska, and Joann Woodruff of Orlando, Florida; one brother, Donald Furry of Oroville, California; two sisters, Bernice Harrison of Oroville, California and Geraldine Weaver of San Leandra, California; four grandchildren, Viola Huitt and husband, Jim, of Bourbon, Susan Petersen and husband, Alan, of Burwell, Nebraska, Lin Gumb and wife, Marie, of Burwell, Nebraska, and Judy Davenport and husband, Jim, of Milford, Nebraska; twelve great-grandchildren, J. D. and Matt Huitt, Andra, Trent, Mark, Alex Petersen, Brett, Lindsy, and Sarah Gumb, Joshua, Jon, and Jesse Davenport; two brother-in-laws, Wilbert Woodruff and wife, Alice, of Bourbon, and Donald Woodruff and wife, Velma, of Rock Spring, Georgia; one sister-in-law, Thelma Fricke of Florissant, Missouri; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 8, 2000 from the Eaton Funeral Chapel in Bourbon with Pastor Jerry Tullier officiating. Interment was in Bacon Cemetery.

Mary Ruth Wilson

Mary Ruth Wilson of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away Monday, January 10, 2000 at the age of 80 years.

Mrs. Wilson was born September 14, 1919 in Corrinth, Mississippi to the late James and Ora Lou (Reeves) Walden. She was raised in the South, mainly in Mississippi and Arkansas and on November 11, 1949 was married to William Vance Wilson. They came to the Sullivan area in the early 1960’s. Mrs. Wilson loved music, especially Rock ‘n Roll and had even managed a band for a time. She also found pleasure in crocheting in her free time.

She is survived by one son, Randy Wilson of Steelville, Missouri, one daughter, Judy Brake and husband Randy of Gerald, Missouri, one sister, Edna Hoefer of House Springs, Missouri, 3 grandchildren, Melissa Walker, Shane and Cody Wilson, three great-grandchildren, Samantha, Alex and Nicholas and a close friend, Richard Declue, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 13, 2000 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Mr. Bobby Higgins officiating. Interment was in Bourbon Cemetery.

Nadine Berti

Nadine Berti of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Sunday, January 2, 2000 at the age of 83 years.

Mrs. Berti was born March 9, 1916 near Sullivan at what was known as Elmont, Missouri. She was the daughter of the late Edwin C. and Della M. (Blankenship) Schmidt. She was a life-long resident of the Sullivan area and on October 17, 1947 was married to Norman Berti. Mrs. Berti was employed for a time at the former International Shoe Company in Sullivan, but later worked at Fidelity Telephone Company as an operator. She retired from there after 22 years, and then devoted her time to her family and grandchildren. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Sullivan.

She is survived by her husband, Norman; two sons, Richard Berti of Sullivan and Damon Berti and wife, Mary Jo of Sullivan; one daughter, Deanne Berti of Sullivan; two brothers, Newell Schmidt of Sullivan and Roland Schmidt of Edmond, Oklahoma; two sisters, Melba Hixon of San Luis Abispo, California, and Audrey Withers of Sullivan; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents, Nadine was preceded in death by a brother, Bryon Schmidt, and a daughter-in-law, Jeannette Berti.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 5, 2000 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Bart Hildreth officiating. Interment was in Schmidt Cemetery, Sullivan, Missouri.

Thelma Jablonski

Thelma A. Jablonski of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away Thursday, December 30, 1999 at the Cuba Manor Nursing Home at the age of 90 years.

Mrs. Jablonski was born February 26, 1909 at New Haven, Missouri to the late Herman and Amelia (Blaske) Stock. She was raised and schooled in New Haven and later made her home in St. Louis. On February 1, 1926 she was married to Paul Jablonski at St. Louis, Missouri and to this marriage two children were born. Mrs. Jablonski was employed in factory work for a time but the majority of her life was spent as a homemaker. Her husband Paul, preceded her in death in 1979 and she had made her home in Sullivan since 1994.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Lorraine and Bill Wittneber of Sullivan, one son Donald Jablonski of St. Louis, Missouri, 5 grandchildren, David Douglas, Cynthia (Dan) Thornton, Randy (Marion) Laskowitz , Jan (Jerry) Booker and Donna Mossberg , 5 great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Heather, Danny, Bradley and Elishia, and 4 great-great-grandchildren, McKenzie, Alexander, Madison and Halley, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents and husband, Mrs. Jablonski was preceded in death by two sisters, Loretta Berry and Berneice Opel.

Funeral services were conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 3, 2000 from the Buchholz Mortuary, 1645 Redman Avenue, Spanish Lake, Missouri with interment in Bethlehem Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri. Arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Velma Shaward

Velma Shaward nee Scott of Phoenix, Arizona formerly of Sullivan passed away Friday, Janaury 7, 2000 at the age of 89 years.

Velma was born February 14, 1910 to the late Ashley and Pearl (Campbell) Scott at Crawford County, Missouri. Velma was Sullivan’s first beautician and was employed in that field until she married Raymond Shaward in 1938 and moved to Phoenix, Arizona. Irene remained in Phoenix until her husband passed away and ill health forced her to come back home to Sullivan. She was a kind and loving wife, sister and aunt. She will be fondly remembered by all who knew who her.

She is survived by one brother, Leo Scott and wife Colleen of Sullivan, three sisters, Mona Strothcamp and Colleen Goebel both of St. Louis, Norma Turnbough of Kansas City, Missouri, nieces nephews other relatives and many friends. Along with her parents and husband Mrs. Shaward was preceded in death by five sisters, Iva White, Audrey Goldsen, Kate Scott, Nadine Harmon and Betty Lollar.

It was Mrs. Shaward desire to be cremated. Private services will be held at a later time. Arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Winford T. Lentz

Winford T. Lentz of Bourbon, Missouri passed away Tuesday, January 4, 2000 at the age of 81 years, five months and 27 days.

Mr. Lentz was born July 17, 1918 at Black Oak, Arkansas to the late Jesse Monroe and Vestinee (Branscum) Lentz. He spent his younger days in the Black Oak area and later moved to the Southeast Missouri area near Rives, Missouri. On October 28, 1938 he was married to Virda Crews at Kennett, Missouri, and to this union two daughters were born. In 1942 Winford and his family moved to St. Louis. He graduated from the former Missouri Chiropractic College, which is now known as Logan College of Chiropractic. His primary occupation was chiropractic health care. He also honorably served his country during W.W.II with the U.S. Navy. Later in life he served as a special agent for Pruco. Mr. Lentz was a baptized believer, and a very active and faithful member of the Church of Christ in Sullivan.

He is survived by his wife, Virda of Bourbon; two daughters, Pat Lourwood and husband, Jim, of St. Louis, and Janet Goff and husband, Dave, of Las Vegas, Nevada; 5 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 7, 2000 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Minister Alan Hedge officiating. Interment was in the National Cemetery at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.

Ralph Turnbull

James Turnbull of Sullivan, Missouri husband of Madge Stroup Turnbull and son of the late Eather and Leatha Boyer Turnbull, passed away Friday, January 14, 2000 at the age of 93 years.

Mr. Turnbull was a life-long resident of Sullivan having been born in Washington County on January 11, 1907. On July 23, 1929 he was married to Madge Stroup at Ft. Worth, Texas. He worked in timber after their marriage and later at the former International Shoe Company in Sullivan. He was most known, however, for his work in the construction trade. Mr. Turnbull had a thorough knowledge of nature and was an accomplished woodsman. He enjoyed hunting but what he loved most was fishing. He also enjoyed gardening and just being outdoors.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Madge Stroup Turnbull of Sullivan, one son, Louis Turnbull and wife Geraldine of Mascoutah, Illinois, three daughters, Shirley Politte and husband Winford, Mary Miller and husband Robert all of Sullivan and Anna Lea Siebenman of St. Louis, two brothers, Jeff Turnbull of Polopinta, Texas and Leonard Turnbull of the State of Washington, one sister, Hazel Birch of Springfield, Missouri, 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Margaret Turnbull, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mr. Turnbull was preceded in death by three grandsons, Darryl Miller, Vernon Politte and Joel Miller, a son-in-law, John Siebenman, two brothers, Clifford and Tracy Turnbull, and two sisters, Alice Martin and Leona Immekus.

Funeral services were conducted 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 17, 2000 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with interment in Oddfellows Memorial Cemetery. Visitation for Mr. Ralph Turnbull was held from 7 until 9 p.m. Sunday at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.
