Joyce McManus

Joyce C. McManus of Sullivan, Missouri, formerly of St. Louis, passed away Saturday, February 12, 2000 at the age of 59 years.

Mrs. McManus was born December 12, 1940 in St. Louis, Missouri to the late Luther and Eva (Dollens) Wray. She lived for a time in Arizona and southern Missouri, but later moved back to the St. Louis area. She was employed for several years at CPI Corporation as a film processing inspector, and retired from there in 1996. On May 3, 1986 she was married to Kenneth McManus in St. Louis. Together they have made their home in Sullivan since 1993. Joyce loved traveling and especially camping. She was also a faithful member of the New Testament Baptist Church of Sullivan.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; four sons: Bob Jones of Imperial, Missouri, Mike Jones of St. Louis, Tony Jones and wife, Debbie, of High Ridge, Missouri, and Donald Jones of St. Louis; one step-son, Kenny McManus of St. Louis; one step-daughter, Brenda Vaughn of Barnhart, Missouri; three sisters, Thelma Deaton of St. Charles, Freda Franks and Betty Remmler, both of Arnold, Missouri; 24 grandchildren, other relatives, and friends. Joyce was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Johnny Wray.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 15, 2000 from New Testament Baptist Church in Sullivan with Pastor David Fortner officiaitng. Interment was in Bourbon Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Ralph Yeargan

Ralph E. Yeargan of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Friday, February 11, 2000 at the age of 81 years.

Mr. Yeargan was born at Chestnut Mound, Tennessee on January 1, 1919 to the late Hershel and Siddie (Dillard) Yeargan. He was raised in La Junta, Colorado and later honorably served his country with the U.S. Army during W.W.II and the Korean Conflict with the Army Air Corps. On May 2, 1943 he was married to Colleen Coleman at Yuma, Arizona, and to this marriage three daughters were born. Mr. Yeargan entered into Civil Service with the United State Air Force as a vehicle mechanic at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino, California. He retired from there after 30 years of service, and then made his home in Sullivan. He was a family man with a wonderful personality. He was very out going and it was said of him that he never met a stranger.

He is survived by his wife, Colleen nee Coleman of Sullivan; three daughters, Janet Sibole and husband, Bill, of Banning, California, Colleen Shaffer and husband, Glenn, of Cottonwood, Arizona, and Linda Angle of Rosebud, Missouri; one sister, Elizabeth Lewis of Mesa Grande, Arizona; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, other relatives, and friends. Two brothers, Hershel and Tommy, preceded Ralph in death, as did one grandchild.

Funeral services were conducted at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 15, 2000 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Mr. Chester Lahmann officiating. It was the desire of Mr. Yeargan that he be cremated. Private interment services will be conducted at a later date.

John T. "Jack" David

Jack David of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Sunday, February 6, 2000 at the age of 66 years.

Mr. David was born January 25, 1934 at Bourbon, Missouri to the late Wilford and Mildred Murphy David. On September 29, 1983 he was married to Elsie Nash at Branson, Missouri. He was employed as an auto mechanic the majority of his life and had lived the past 20 years in the Sullivan area. He enjoyed fishing in his free time and was a friend to all. It was said of him that he never knew a stranger.

He is survived by his wife Elsie David nee Nash of Sullivan, three sons, Thomas, John and Jackie David all of Sullivan, one daughter, Mildred Graham of Bourbon, two step-daughters, whom he loved as his own, Kathy Parker and Glenda Stroup both of Sullivan,15 other step-children, a host of grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Graveside funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 9, 2000 in Bourbon Cemetery, with Pastor Gene Waterman officiating. Arrangements are under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Johnnie Rethmeyer

Johnnie A. Rethmeyer of Columbia, Missouri, formerly of Sullivan, passed away Sunday, January 16, 2000 at the age of 98 years.

Miss Rethmeyer was born the youngest of ten children on May 21, 1901 to August F. and Rachel (Adams) Rethmeyer. She was educated through the Sullivan Public Schools and graduated in 1919. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree at Missouri University in Columbia and her Master of Arts degree at Greely, Colorado. Miss Rethmeyer taught school in Missouri for 45 ½ years, and served most of those years in the Maplewood/Richmond Heights School District. She was baptized in Sullivan at the age of 13 years, and was an active member of Broadway Christian Church in Columbia, Missouri.

She is survived by two nieces, two grandnephews, six grandnieces, one great-grandnephew, and two great-grandnieces.

A Graveside Service was conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 22, 2000 in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Sullivan. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Jim Reed

Jim Reed of McAllen, Texas, formerly of Sullivan, passed away Wednesday, January 19, 2000 at the age of 53 years.

Jim was born on September 18, 1946 at Osceola, Iowa to the late Rufus and Hazel (Deemer) Reed. Later in his life, Jim’s family moved to Sullivan where he attended Sullivan High School. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed basketball, baseball, hunting, fishing, and golf. He played for the Sullivan Baseball Town Team, as well as the Sullivan Industrial Basketball League where he was a member of several championship teams. While living in the Sullivan area, Jim worked as a professional driver for the Yellow Transit Trucking Company. He later made his home in McAllen, Texas, where he started a small trucking and dispatching company.

He is survived by one son: Joel Reed and wife, Amy, of Weslaco, Texas; two daughters: Lisa Dickson and husband, Brian, of Rogersville, Missouri and Carolyn Cross and husband, Jim, of Sullivan; one brother: Jack Reed of McAllen, Texas; two sisters: Jo Ann Lynn of Bourbon and Joyce Hartung of Round Tree Lake, Illinois; five grandchildren, other relatives, and friends. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a sister, Jerri Bellows and a brother-in-law, Lee Hartung.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 22, 2000 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Scott Perry officiating. Interment was in I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery in Sullivan.

Melvin Eckstein

Melvin E. Eckstein of Bourbon, Missouri, passed away at his home on Monday, January 17, 2000 at the age of 67 years.

Mr. Eckstein was born February 13, 1932 at St. Clair, Missouri to the late Edward and Rosa (Schmidt) Eckstein. He had been baptized into the Catholic faith at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at Neier, Missouri. His vocation in life was that of a self-employed commercial and residential painter. Mr. Eckstein retired in 1993. He had made his home in Bourbon, Missouri the past twenty years. He also had honorably served his country with the Army National Guard.

He is survived by two sons, Mark Eckstein and wife Young of Ellisville, Missouri, Mike Eckstein and wife Deby of Cedar Hill, Missouri, two daughters, Kim Aydt and husband Patrick of Valley Park, Missouri, Linda Colvis and husband Mark of Peoria, Illinois, four sisters, Albertha Marshy of Crestwood, Missouri, Dorothy Doerr of Jerome, Missouri, Loraine Voss of St. Louis, Missouri, Irene Stuesse of Krakow, Missouri, 8 grandchildren, nieces nephews other relatives and many friends. Four brothers, Walter, Alphonse, Elmer and Edward Eckstein preceded Melvin in death.

Funeral Services were conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 20, 2000 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with the Rev. Father Theodore Brunnert officiating. Interment was in St. Joseph Cemetery, Neier, Missouri.

Lorene Helton

Mary Lorene Helton of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Monday, January 24, 2000 at the age of 72 years, one month and four days.

Mrs. Helton was born December 20, 1927 at Sullivan, Missouri to the late William and Mary (Walz) Weiskopf. She lived the majority of her life in the Sullivan area and on May 9, 1953 was married to Mitchell C. Helton at Saint Anthony Catholic Church. She was employed in daycare and for a time a housekeeper, both commercially and domestically. She enjoyed sewing and gardening, canning and making apple butter. Lorene was one who was always there for her family and friends and volunteered when a helping hand was needed. She was a member of the Mother’s Club of Saint Thomas Moore Parish, a member of the Human Growth Foundation, Spring Bluff Homemakers Club and the Eucharistic Adoration Society of Saint Anthony Parish.

She is survived by two sons; Kevin Helton and wife Margaret of St. Louis and Kurt Helton of Sullivan; two daughters, Karen Loretto and husband Joseph and Kathy Helton all of St. Louis; four brothers, Raymond Weiskopf of St. Louis, Bill, Leo and Harold Weiskpof all of Sullivan; one sister, Margurette Thomeczek of Sullivan, five grandchildren, Jeremy Helton, Jean-Ann Lovins, T.J. Lovins, Chris and Amy Loretto, four great-grandchildren, Cody Lovins, Marissa Analle, Vanessa and Carly Loretto, other relatives and many friends. Along with her husband, Mrs. Helton was preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Schmuke and Bernice Thomeczek, five brothers-in-law, Jim Thomeczek, Emil Schmuke, James and Robert Helton and Dan Reed, and two sisters-in-law, Rosemary Weiskopf and Verna Fruworth.

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 26, 2000 from Saint Anthony Catholic Church in Sullivan with the Rev. Father Theodore Brunnert officiating. Interment was in Laubinger Memorial Cemetery. Those who desire may make memorial contributions to the Laubinger Memorial Cemetery Fund or the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

William Click

William M. Click of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, January 25, 2000 at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis County, Missouri, at the age of 57 years.

Mr. Click was born October 25, 1942 at St. Louis, Missouri to Vivian Whittington Click and the late William A. Click. His vocation in life was that of a set-up mechanic for commercial sewing machines. He enjoyed collecting stamps and baseball cards and using the computer. As a young adult, he was baptized into the Baptist faith.

He is survived by three sons, Mike, Ronnie and Tommy Click, four daughters, Linda Penrose, Tina Cox Tracy Parker and Wanda Click, his mother Vivian Click, two brothers, Patrick and Robert Click, a host of grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Graveside funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 26, 2000 in Buffalo Cemetery, Sullivan, Missouri. There was no visitation. Arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Catherine "Cookie" Hager

Catherine M. Hager of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away Saturday, January 29, 2000 at the age of 79 years, 4 months and 7 days.

Cookie, as she was known by her family and friends, was born September 22, 1920 in St. Louis, Missouri to the late James and Mary Thomas Baugh. She was raised there and later graduated from the public school system as a Senior. She honorably served her country during W.W. II with the WAC’s. On June 12, 1949 she was married to Glenn Hager in St. Louis and in 1957 they moved to Sullivan to make their home. Mrs. Hager was an active member of New Friendship Baptist Church who was always helpful and outgoing to every one she met.

She is survived by her husband Glenn, one son Wallace Jenkins of Sullivan, one step-daughter, Glenda Haddock of Belleville, Illinois, two sisters, Gladys Thomas of Maryville, Illinois and Elizabeth Austino of St. James, Missouri, 7 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. A daughter Barbara Pyrtle preceded Mrs. Hager in death.

Funeral services were conducted 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 2, 2000 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Jim Abel officiating. Interment was in New Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery.

Curtis Wayne Paul

Curtis Wayne Paul of Sullivan passed away Thursday, February 3, 2000 at the age of 40 years.

Mr. Paul was born on May 29, 1959 in Washington, Missouri to Curtis Woodrow and Evelyn (Doyle) Paul. He was raised in the Sullivan area, attended Sullivan High School, and lived his entire life in and around Sullivan. On July 13, 1976 he was united in marriage to Laura Price, and to this union two children were born. Curtis honorably served his country for nearly two years with the United States Army. He provided for his family by working as a machinery mechanic for such companies as Paramount Knit Headwear in Bourbon and Georgia-Pacific Corporation in Cuba. He took pleasure in deer hunting, Bible reading, and “just taking it easy.” Those who knew him best describe Curtis as loving, giving, supportive, and a man who was always there when others needed him. Being a baptized believer in Christ and a member of the Word of Life Worship Center, he was also known as a man of faith.

He is survived by his wife, Laura; one son, Jacob Paul of Sullivan; one daughter, Melanie Joslin and husband, Jeremy, of Bourbon; one grandson, Garrett Joslin; his parents, Curtis and Evelyn Paul of Bourbon; two brothers, Robert Paul, and Eric Paul and wife, Carrie, all of Bourbon; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 6, 2000 at the Word of Life Worship Center in Sullivan with Pastor Terry Palmer officiating. Interment was in Bourbon Cemetery. Visitation for Mr. Curtis Paul was held from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2000 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.
