Linda Esslinger

Linda K. Esslinger of Sullivan. Missouri passed away on Tuesday, August 15, 2000 at the age of 50 years.

Ms. Esslinger was born on December 14, 1949 in Union, Missouri to the late Charles A. and Myrtle (Eads) Grannemann. She was raised in the Union area, and moved to Sullivan in 1988. In addition to raising eight children, Linda supported her family as a hard worker in the food service industry. In recent years she served as general manager of the new Burger King Restaurant in Sullivan. Linda was known as a very giving person who loved to spoil her grandchildren, and who also opened her home to everyone. As a baptized believer in Christ, she placed her membership with the Sullivan Christian Church in 1994.

She is survived by seven sons, Doyle Boxx and wife, Robin of St. Louis, David Boxx of Sullivan, Henry Esslinger, Jr., and wife, Pamela of Sullivan, Adam Whisenhunt and wife, Shonna of Union, Missouri, James Esslinger of Sullivan, Joe Esslinger and friend, Bobbie Jo Cantlon of Sullivan, and Gavin Boxx of Sullivan; one daughter, Samantha Pogue of Sullivan; one brother, Woodrow Grannemann of Sullivan; special friends, Mary Jo McCarthy of Washington, Missouri and Pat Spindler of Sullivan; seven grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents, Linda was preceded in death by one brother, John Grannemann and one sister, Carol Schroeder.

Funeral services were conducted at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 17, 2000 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Minister Jeff Bent and Mr. Bill Cuneio officiating. Interment was in the New Haven Cemetery at New Haven, Missouri.

Mildred Mastin

Mildred A. Mastin of Sullivan passed away on Thursday, August 17, 2000 at the age of 87 years.

Mrs. Mastin was born on January 20, 1913 in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Newton D. and Mary Jane (Darling) Turner. In the early 1940s she moved to St. Louis. On November 22, 1944 she was united in marriage to William E. Mastin in Troy, Missouri. “Millie,” as she was known to family and friends, worked as a drill press operator for a few companies in the St. Louis area during her early adult life. Her primary vocation, however, was serving as a sales clerk for Famous Barr in St. Louis for over twenty years. In 1976 she moved to the Spring Bluff area, and then to Sullivan in 1980. Millie was known as a very loving and caring lady who was quite independent. She enjoyed ceramics, quilting, and collecting dolls. In addition, Millie was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, and found pleasure in the company of her faithful dog, “Lady.” She also was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Sullivan.

She is survived by one sister, Virginia Konsdorf of Saginaw, Michigan, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers: Arnold, Walter, Delbert, Kenneth, Willis, and Arthur Turner; and four sisters: Velma Turner, Esther Neff, Jeanette Weber, and Bonnie Karas.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 21, 2000 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Dale Jackson officiating. Interment was in Cave Springs Cemetery.

Sylvia Antonick

Sylvia L. Antonick of Sullivan, Missouri, wife of the late Nicholas Antonick, and daughter of the late William and Pearle (Gibson) Andrews, passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2000 at the age of 94 years.

Mrs. Antonick was born March 18, 1906 near Bourbon, Missouri where she had lived the early years of her life. After her marriage to Nicholas Antonick she made her home in St. Louis. After his death in 1973 she returned to the Sullivan area to make her home. Sylvia was a factory worker for a time with the former International Shoe Company in Sullivan but for the majority of her life, she was a devoted wife and homemaker. She enjoyed yard work and raised beautiful flowers. She was also involved at the Senior Citizens Center where she took an active part in decorating the center for their activities. Sylvia was an avid baseball Cardinals fan and would watch their games on T.V. She was also a member of Temple Baptist Church of Sullivan.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, two of which are nieces, Laverne Umbright of St. Charles, Missouri and Viva Lou Carey of Sullivan, a nephew, Larry Key of Sullivan, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 18, 2000 from Temple Baptist Church in Sullivan with Pastor Scott Perry officiating. Interment was in Oddfellows Memorial Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Roger Alan Reed

Roger Alan Reed of West Frankfort, Illinois passed away Friday, August 25, 2000 at the age of 35 years.

Roger was born January 13, 1965 to James and Connie (Mitchel) Reed in Pensacola, Florida. He was raised for a time in Colorado and later Missouri, moving to Sullivan in 1983. He was a 1983 graduate of Viburnum High School. Roger was married to Tresa Frits on March 29, 1988 in Washington, Missouri and to this marriage three children were born. Roger and Tresa made their home in West Frankfort, Illinois the past 11 years. Roger was employed over the years with various trucking companies which included 12 years at GLB, a year with American Freightways and the past four years with the Westridge Trucking Company as a diesel mechanic. He found enjoyment in motorcycles and would ride on cross country trips with his father and friends. His greatest love though was his wife and family. He enjoyed children and their company and could often be found playing with them in the back yard or neighborhood It was said that he would often become a child again when playing with them. Roger was also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

He is survived by his wife Tresa, one son, Roger Gene Reed, two daughters, Shelby and Nicole Reed all of the family home, his parents James and Connie Reed of Sullivan, paternal grandparents, James and Edna Reed of West Frankfort, Illinois, maternal grandmother, Lorna Mitchell of Palatka, Florida, two brothers, James Reed of Japan, Missouri and Dennis Reed with the U.S. Navy in the state of Maryland, two sisters, Jolynn Johnson of St. Louis, Missouri and Lisa Miller of Rolla, parents-in-law, Lynda Smith and husband Harlon of the state of Tennessee, Joseph Frits and wife Caroline of Salem, Missouri, his grandparents-in-law, Gene and Edie McMackin of Viburnum, Missouri, other relatives and many friends. Roger was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Josh Mitchel and by a brother Kelly Reed.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 29, 2000 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Bro. David Edwards officiating. Interment was in Oddfellows Memorial Cemetery.

Joseph W. Tanner

Joseph W. Tanner of Cuba, Missouri passed away Sunday, August 27, 2000 at the age of 73 years.

Mr. Tanner was born September 9, 1926 at Mt. Vernon, Illinois to the late John Henry and Sarah Edna (Thornburg) Tanner. He was raised near Piggott, Arkansas and at the age of 16 came to Missouri to work. On July 12, 1950 he was married to Cecelia Jackson at House Springs, Missouri and to this marriage five children were born. Mr. Tanner was a retired employee of Frisco Transportation Company; for which he had worked for 38 years. He enjoyed deer and turkey hunting and bass fishing. He was a loving father and husband and will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. At the age of 6 years Mr. Tanner was baptized into the Baptist faith and although he didn’t practice his faith he was a God fearing man.

He is survived by his wife Cecelia nee Jackson of Cuba, three sons, Michael of Cuba, Bobby and wife Tabitha of Bourbon, Missouri and Alvin and wife Melissa of St. Louis, two daughters, Sarah Minor and husband Louis of Berryman, Missouri, and Rebecca Davis of Cuba, one brother, Wayne Tanner of St. Louis, County, Missouri, one step-brother, John Garner of Bourbon, three sisters, Mildred Battocletti of St. Louis County, Missouri, Freda McBride of St. Peters, Missouri, Sadie Pollock of the state of California and one step-sister, Imogene Tanner of Cuba, Missouri, 10 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 30, 2000 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Scott Perry officiating. Interment was in Oddfellows Memorial Cemetery, Sullivan, Missouri.

Debra A. Eye

Debra A. Eye of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Wednesday, August 30, 2000 at the age of 49 years.

Debbie, as her family and friends knew her, was born on April 17, 1951 at Bourbon, Missouri to Charles and Helen (Roosmann) Clonts. She was a life-long resident of the Sullivan area and a 1969 graduate of Sullivan High School. On August 3, 1968 she was married to John J. Eye at Saint Anthony Catholic Church in Sullivan. Debbie enjoyed life to the fullest and her grandchildren were a constant source of pleasure. Debbie was employed at various businesses in the area, which included Watson’s Florist and Meramec Catering. She was a member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary #3987 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Ladies Auxiliary #3781. Debbie was also a member of Saint Anthony Parish of Sullivan.

She is survived by her husband Joe, one son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Teann Eye of Sullivan, three grandchildren, Alyson, Alec and Andrew Eye, her parents, Charles and Helen Clonts of Sullivan, one brother, Charlie Clonts of Sullivan, two sisters, Linda Klouzek of Linn, Missouri and Teresa Clonts of Eureka, Missouri, paternal grandmother, Ellen Clonts of Eldorado Springs, Missouri, brother-in-law, Dean Klouzek, sister-in-law, Jill Clonts, a special cousin Diane Charleson, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and many friends. An infant son, John Charles Eye, preceded Debbie in death, as did her parents-in-law, John and Alma Eye.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 2, 2000 from Saint Anthony Catholic Church in Sullivan with the Reverend Father Theodore Brunnert and the Reverend Father Donald Carey officiating. Interment was in Oddfellows Memorial Cemetery. Those who desire may make memorials to the American Cancer Society or Masses to Saint Anthony Catholic Church. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Bessie White

Bessie Irene White of Valley Park, Missouri passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2000 at the age of 82 years.

Mrs. White was born on February 17, 1918 in Howell County, Missouri to the late George and Pearl (Gentry) Means. On January 2, 1941 she was united in marriage to Frank White. The vast majority of Bessie’s adult life revolved around caring for her family, her extended family, and her home. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, which included fishing and just being with her family. Those who knew her best describe Bessie as a very loving and big-hearted person. As a young girl, she placed her trust in Christ and was baptized as a follower of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by her husband, Frank White of Valley Park; one son, Charlie Devon White of Valley Park; three brothers, Donald Means and wife, Lois of High Ridge, Missouri, Thomas Means and wife, Avinail of the state of Idaho, and Junior Means and wife, Shirley of Fenton, Missouri; three sisters, Alta Bowen of Cabool, Missouri, June Hastings of Mountain Grove, Missouri, and Donna Wake of the state of Missouri; two grandchildren, Lowell Dean Prewitt, Jr. and Evelyn Eichschlag; one brother-in-law, Gene Glenn; eight great-grandchildren, numerous great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents, Mrs. White was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Louise Weber; one brother, Dennis Means; four sisters, Goldie Glenn, Zelphia New, Ruby Watts, and Virginia German; and one great-great-grandson, Korbin Stoutt.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 3, 2000 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Scott Perry officiating. Interment was in the Cave Springs Cemetery.

James Springer

James D. Springer of Bourbon passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2000 at the age of 82 years.

Mr. Springer was born on January 5, 1918 in Sullivan, Missouri to the late Claude Hyde and Ethel Rosa (Williamson) Springer. After graduating from the Bourbon High School, he worked for the Salvation Army and then for a dairy farm in the Bourbon area. On April 12, 1939 he was joined in marriage to Bernice Bell in Steelville, Missouri, and to this union two daughters were born. Mr. Springer also worked for the Missouri Highway Department, and finally retired after thirteen years with the Pea Ridge Mining Company. He was a lifelong resident of Bourbon, and a member of the First United Methodist Church since 1958. He was a founding member of the Crawford County Coon Hunters Club, and also belonged to the Bourbon Music Club. Mr. Springer was well known for playing the banjo and fiddle, and for building bird houses and dog houses. He enjoyed coon hunting, fishing, and, in his later years, found great pleasure in square dancing. He was known as a generous man who never met a stranger, and was constantly willing to help others.

He is survived by two daughters, Nancy Childers and husband, Gary of Judsonia, Arkansas and Mary Jane Carey and husband, Jim of St. James, Missouri; four brothers, Roy Springer and wife, Frances of St. James, Clark Springer and wife, Katie of Sullivan, Paul Springer and wife, Mary of Bourbon, and Gene Springer and wife, Ann of Bourbon; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice, on January 8, 1999.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 4, 2000 from the First United Methodist Church in Bourbon with Pastor Connie Gallagher and Pastor Dianne Cochran officiating. Interment was in the Bourbon Cemetery. If desired, contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Bourbon in memory of Mr. James D. Springer. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Ethel Bennett

Ethel L. Bennett of Sullivan passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2000 at the age of 84 years.

Mrs. Bennett was born on March 23, 1916 in Tulsa County, Oklahoma to the late Gordon and Nora Jane (Armer) Helton. Throughout her adult life she primarily was employed as a clerical worker in the paper manufacturing industry. She also worked in shoe factories in Festus, Missouri and Washington, Missouri, and served for two years as a dispatcher for the Sullivan Police Department. Ethel enjoyed traveling, gardening, sewing, cooking, and her dog, “Honey.” She was known as an honest, positive person who had an uplifting effect upon others. Mrs. Bennett was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter 338 in St. Louis, and earlier in her life had attended the Grace United Methodist Church of Sullivan.

She is survived by two grandsons, Steven Hults of Washington, DC and Christopher Hults of New Haven, Connecticut; one nephew, Terry Helton of St. Louis; other relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bennett was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Bennett; one son, Gary Hults; an infant daughter, Connie Hults; and three brothers, Ralph, Everett, and William Helton.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 4, 2000 from the Chapel of the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan with Dr. Bart Hildreth officiating. Interment was in the Union City Cemetery. If desired, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in memory of Mrs. Ethel L. Bennett.
