Beckett, Alma Grace

Alma Grace Beckett of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at the Osage Beach Health Care Center at the age of 90 years.

Mrs. Beckett was born on February 14, 1919 at Delsoge, Missouri to Marion and Lillie (Simpson) Brown. On June 18, 1939 she was united in marriage to Vernon Lee Beckett at Desloge and to this marriage three children were born. In May of 1961 the family moved to Sullivan where Vernon worked at in iron ore mines. For the majority of her life, Alma was a homemaker but did work outside the home for a time. She and Vernon enjoyed camping and fishing, traveling and even building houses together. Alma also enjoyed crocheting, reading, cooking and baking. She was a dedicated member of Grace United Methodist Church of Sullivan where she was involved with the Ladies Association and quilting club. She loved her grandchildren and family and will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.

She is survived by a son; Richard Beckett and wife Carla of Sullivan, Missouri; two daughters, Barbara Bohning of Osage Beach, Missouri and Linda Cuneio and husband James of Sullivan; one sister, Norma Lane of Desloge, Missouri; 8 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Along with her parents, Alma was preceded in death by her husband Vernon in June of 1979; one grandchild; a sister, Mabel Margaret Brown; and son-in-law Henry Bohning.

Funeral services were conducted at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 11, 2009 from Grace United Methodist Church in Sullivan with the Rev. Steve Williams officiating. Interment was on Monday at 11:00 a.m. in St. Francois Memorial Garden, Desloge, Missouri. Visitation was held from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m., Sunday at Grace United Methodist Church in Sullivan. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Grace United Methodist Church of Sullivan. Arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home of Sullivan.

Beck, Arthur V.

Arthur V. Beck of Sullivan, MO, passed away on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at the age of 72 years.

Arthur was born on January 18, 1936 in St. Louis, Missouri to John Frank and Mabel M. (Anderson) Beck. He honorably serving his country as a Marine, and married Mable E. Herrmann on March 22, 1969 in St. Louis, MO. He retired from Chrysler after 30 years to take care of Mable and moved to Sullivan in 1986. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, and working with children.

He is survived by three children, Mark Beck of House Springs, MO, Michael Beck of Pennsylvania, and Shelia Cruz of Maryland; five brothers, Vincil Beck of Mehlville, Victor Beck of Maplewood, Virgil Beck of St. Louis, Louis Beck of Farmington, Roy Sillmann of Des Lodge; a sister, Catherine Beck-Sillmann of Sullivan; eight grandchildren; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2001.

Funeral services for Arthur Beck were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 8, 2008 at the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home with Pastor Fern Nye officiating. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home.

Bates. Goldie M.

Goldie M. Bates of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at the age of 93 years.

Mrs. Bates was born on August 17, 1917 in Hardy, Arkansas. In 1935, she was married to Wilburn G. Bates and to this marriage four children were born. She was a homemaker and also known as a hard worker and employed for a time at a purse factory. She loved her family and would often take family outings with them where she taught them how to fish and bait their own hooks. Goldie’s home was always open to others, especially her children’s friends where they would play board games for hours on end. She was also known as a fair person and loving mother who instilled trust into children. Goldie was a member of Meramec Valley Baptist Church of Sullivan.

She is survived by a daughter; Cathern Murphy and husband Rodger of Sullivan; one son, Kenneth Bates and wife Jackie of St. Charles, Missouri; Daughter-in-law, Kathleen Bates; 8 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Along with her parents, and two sons, Granville and Bobbie Bates, Goldie was preceded in death by her husband, Wilburn in 2000, and by a brother, Cecil Wilburn and a sister Sylvia Mason.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the American Heart Association in memory of Goldie Bates.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 26, 2011 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Rev. Richard Williams officiating. Interment was in Saint Peters Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri.

Bates, Henry Lee

Henry L. Bates of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away on Monday, November 1, 2010 at the age of 79 years.

Henry, born on June 21, 1931 in St. Louis, was one of nine children born to George and Edna (Chrisco) Bates. At the age of 2 years, the family moved to the Sullivan area. He worked in construction the majority of his life operating a back hoe. Henry honorably served his country during the Korean War with the U.S. Army and attained the rank of Corporal. He was also a member of the American Legion Post of St. Clair, Missouri.

He is survived by a brother, Charles Bates and wife Ina of Sullivan, Missouri; four sisters, Grace Stahlman of St. Ann, Missouri, Ellen Bates of Berkley, Missouri, Norma Schnetzer of St. Louis, Missouri and Carole Sohn and husband Harold of Florissant, Missouri; other relatives and friends.

Along with his parents, Henry was preceded in death by a brother, Emmett Bates; and two sisters, Sadie Dunne and Nancy Femmer.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 6, 2010 from the Eaton funeral Home in Sullivan with interment with full military honors in Stanton Cemetery. Visitation was held from 4:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Friday from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan. Those who desire may make memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association in the name of Henry L. Bates.

Barton, Bob

Bobby Gene Barton of Rolla, Missouri passed away on Sunday, December 19, 2010 at the age of 72 years.

Bob, as he was known by his family and friends, was born on August 28, 1938 at Gatewood, Missouri to Vernon and Virgie (Lewis) Barton. He was raised in Corning, Arkansas and on March 28, 1970 was married to Barbara Etta LaBryer. Bob honorably served his county with the U.S. Marine Corps and after his discharge became employed with General Motors as an assemblyman. After 24 years of service to the company, he retired from there. He was known as a good natured person who would always help others in need and was a friend to all. Bob also was an accomplished bowler and also enjoyed fishing and flower gardening. He also raised dogs as a hobby and as pets.

He is survived by his wife Barbara E. Barton of the family home; three sons, Bobby Barton Jr., and wife Vickie of Granite City, Illinois, Kevin Barton of Corning, Arkansas and Dale Courtway of St. James, Missouri; two brothers, Billy Barton of Pocahontas, Arkansas and Vernon Barton of Corning, Arkansas; four sisters, Polly Arnold of Little Rock, Arkansas, Shirley Cliffton of Corning, Arkansas, Jessie Barton of the state of Arizona and Kitty Carpenter of Corning, Arkansas; 8 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; a special nephew, Carlus Barton and a special niece, Sharon O’Hara, whom he loved as his own; other relatives and friends.

Along with his parents, Bob was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Carl Barton.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with interment in Gerth Cemetery, rural Bourbon, Missouri.

Bartel, James Allen

James Allen Bartel of Sullivan, Missouri passed away at his home on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at the age of 63 years.

Jim, as he was know by his family and friends, was born at Washington, Missouri to Junior Allen and Alice June (Reed) Bartel. He lived in the Strain area near Gerald, Missouri as a youngster and in 1964 came to Sullivan to make his home. Jim honorably served his country during the Vietnam War and had attained the rank of Sergeant with a specialty in the infantry and light weapons. After his return home, on June 8, 1968 he was united in marriage to Verna Joyce Wilkinson at Sullivan, Missouri and to this union two children were born. Jim was employed a Paramount Cap Company in Bourbon, Missouri for a time and later worked at Chrysler in Fenton, Missouri until he retired from there. He then stocked shelves for Frito-Lay for 10 years and later, Jim became a car transporter for area car dealerships. Jim enjoyed gathering most every day with the Flying –J crew for coffee. He was also an avid fisherman and enjoyed cutting the grass and woodworking. Jim liked camping and outings with his family and friends. His greatest love however, was his family, especially his grandchildren. He was known as a straightforward man who would readily help anyone and will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Jim is survived by his wife, Verna of the family home; a son, Keith Bartel and wife Shandy of O’Fallon, Missouri; a daughter Jennifer Bayless and husband Tommy of Bourbon, Missouri; three grandchildren, Rachael and Clarice Bartel and Lauren Bayless; one brother, Richard Bartel and wife Beth of Rolla, Missouri; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were conducted 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 24, 2010 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Scott Perry officiating. Interment was in Oddfellows Memorial Cemetery, Sullivan, Missouri.

Barnes, Ronald Lee, Sr.

Ronald Lee Barnes, Sr., of Sullivan, Missouri was found at his home on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, having passed away at the age of 52 years.

Ron was born in Saint Louis, Missouri on April 19, 1957 to Floyd E. and Alice N. (Walls) Barnes. He came to live in the Sullivan area 17 years ago and was employed as a commercial truck driver. Ron was known for his sense of humor and his love of motorcycles. He “didn’t know a stranger” and enjoyed the company of his many friends. He was a member of AMVETS, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Sullivan where he was known as “New Ron”.

He is survived by a son Ronald L. Barnes, Jr. of Sullivan, Missouri; two daughters, Crystal Michel and husband Chris of Sullivan, and Rhonda Holzschuh and husband Steven of Monroe, Michigan; 9 grandchildren; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Noah Holzschuh.

Memorial funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday from the Eagles Hall in Sullivan.

Barks, Bobby L.

Bobby L. Barks of Sullivan, MO, passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at the age of 67 years.

Bob was born on October 16, 1941 in Burbank, MO to Roy C. and Emma A. (Crites) Barks, one of seven children. He married Melba Gallamore on January 23, 1960 in Silva, MO and to this union two children were born. He worked as a Carpenter for most of his life, retiring from the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners # 1987 St. Charles. He was an ordained minister with West Liberty Association from Wayne County and a member of Crossroads General Baptist Church in Greenville, MO. He loved to be outside, farming, working on projects around the house and spending quality time with his grandchildren. Bob also liked to hunt and fish, but mostly work on projects with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Melba of the family home; two children, Daniel Barks of St. Louis, MO and Ellen Gillette and husband Donald of St. Clair, MO; four grandchildren, William, Nicholas and Katiejo Gillette of St. Clair and Silver Moehlman of Wichita, KS; four great-grandchildren, Tristan, Clinton, Deborah, and Mackenzie; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Troy, Roy, and Leonard Barks; three sisters, Norma Coggins, Carrie Vavak, and Eula Barks; and one grandchild, Danielle Gillette.

Services for Bobby Barks were conducted at Crossroads General Baptist Church in Greenville, MO at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2009, with Pastors Billy McAtee and Frank Radford officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery

All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials to the Crossroads Baptist Church Cemetery Fund in Greenville, MO.
