Stanley French

Stanley P. French of Stanton, Missouri passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2002 at the age of 82 years.

Mr. French was born on March 12, 1920 in Festus, Missouri to the late George and Goldie French. He honorably served his country in the National Guard and later distinguished himself by earning two Bronze Stars during W.W.II in the U.S. Army. Upon his discharge, he re-enlisted in the Air Force. On July 12, 1952 he was united in marriage to Virgie Jones at Herculaneum, Missouri. Mr. French was known as an easy-going individual who enjoyed the outdoors and traveling. He also found pleasure in artwork, painting and drawing. His vocation in life was that of a groundskeeper for several cemeteries in St. Louis.

He is survived by one daughter, Linda French of Stanton, one brother, George French of Festus, Missouri, other relatives and friends. Along with his parents and wife, Virgie French, he was preceded in death by two brothers Earl and Eugene French and three sisters, Geraldine Moss, Hilda and Dorothy French.

Funeral services were conducted at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 28, 2002 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with interment on Monday, in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

Harley Monroe

Harley L. Monroe of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2002 at the age of 76 years.

Mr. Monroe was born May 27, 1926 to Leroy R. and Gladys H. (Merry) Monroe at Mount Hope, Wisconsin. He attended college in Wisconsin for three years and then entered the military. He honorably served his country in the United States Army during World Was II. After his discharge, he finished his fourth year in college at Rolla School of Mines completing his Bachelors Degree in Engineering. On November 21, 1953 he was married to Alberta Hood in Flat River, Missouri, at Taylor Avenue Methodist Church. They celebrated 48 years of marriage. Harley and Alberta made their home in the Lead Belt area where he was employed by St. Joseph Lead. In 1961 they moved to Bourbon and in 1965 to Sullivan when Harley became superintendent of the former Meramec Mining company. He remained in that position until retirement. Mr. Monroe enjoyed spending summers in his native Wisconsin, traveling to the East and West Coast, fishing and golfing. He was a family man and was very proud of having served his country. Harley was a 50 year member of the Sullivan Masonic Lodge #69 A.F. & A.M. and 50 year member of the Scottish Rite. He was also a long time member of First United Methodist Church of Bourbon.

He is survived by his wife Alberta of the family home, two sisters, Virginia Miller of Genesco, Illinois and Gwendolyn Blackburn of Fennimore, Wisconsin, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A gathering of family and friends was held at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at the First United Methodist Church in Bourbon. Masonic services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. at the church with memorial funeral services to follow at 11:00 a.m. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church. Arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Hester M. Blum

Hester M. Blum of Sullivan passed away Saturday, October 12, 2002 at the age of 89 years.

Hester was born May 7, 1913 to the late Louis and Sarah (Carter) Lutzenburg in Crawford County, Missouri. She lived her entire life in the Bourbon, Sullivan areas. On January 27, 1931 she was married to William Blum at Steelville, Missouri and they were blessed with five sons. Hester worked hard in the home caring for her family whom she loved very much. She was a quiet person who enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by four sons, Richard Blum and wife, Virginia, Marvin Blum and wife, Pat, Darrell Blum, all of Sullivan, Albert Blum and wife, Georgia of Bourbon, nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Along with her parents, Mrs. Blum was preceded in death by her husband, William Blum in 1992, one son, William Blum, Jr. and three brothers.

Funeral services were conducted 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 15, 2002 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Rev. Robert Middleton officiating. Interment was in Hill Cemetery, Bourbon, Missouri.

Russell Smale, Sr.

Russell F. Smale, Sr. of Sullivan passed away Saturday, October 12, 2002 at the age of 77 years.

Mr. Smale was born August 4, 1925 to Walter R. and Margaret (Larkin) Smale in Hollywood, California. He made his home in San Francisco and graduated from high school there. Russell honorably served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and later in the Korean War. On November 2, 1946 he was united in marriage to Wilma Roosman on the Star of the Sea in San Francisco. Mr. Smale was employed as a Teamster in the trucking industry until his retirement in 1986. He then relocated to the Sullivan area where he has been active in St. Clair Elks Lodge, American Legion, Fraternal Order of Eagles Arie #3781, and two time, Past Commander of V.F.W. Russell Schmidt Post 3987. Russell was a family man, he enjoyed traveling, music and hanging out with his friends at the V.F.W. He was especially fond of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. Mr. Smale was of the Catholic Faith.

He is survived by one son, Gary Smale of Houston, Texas, one daughter, Diane Charlson of Sullivan, four grandchildren, Cassie Hoevelmann and husband, Jason of Sullivan, Russell F. Smale, III and Timothy Smale both of Victorville, CA, Sarah Smale-Villafranca of Berkeley, CA, eight great-grandchildren other relatives and many friends. Along with his parents, Mr. Smale was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Smale and one son, Russell F. Smale, Jr.

A gathering of family and friends was held at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at the Eaton Funeral Home. A V.F.W. service was conducted at 6:15 p.m. and memorial service at 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Multiple Sclerosis Society. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Essie Reed

Essie E. Reed of Sullivan, formerly of the Leadbelt area, passed away Friday, October 11, 2002 at the age of 102 years.

Essie Elizabeth Newcomb was born July 18, 1900 to the late John W. and Mariah M. (Means) Newcomb at Caledonia, Missouri. She attended the former Sloan school and on May 29, 1919 was married to Charles O. Reed at St. Louis, Missouri. The Reed family made their home in St. Louis for a time, later moving to the Leadwood, Desloge, and Bonne Terre area. Mrs. Reed was a past member of the Deslodge V.F.W. Auxiliary Post # 2464 and the Order of Eastern Star. In 1962 her husband, Charles, preceded her in death. In 1968 Essie made her home in Sullivan. She enjoyed quilting, sewing and was described as a wonderful cook. Essie’s passion was for gardening; vegetables, flowers or anything that would keep her hands in the earth. A wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, aunt and friend, Essie’s family was her life. She will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by two daughters, Joan Morris of Sullivan, Oral Chandler and husband, Charles of Bonne Terre, Missouri, five grandchildren, Anne Nethington and husband, H. Bruce of Kirkwood, Sue Berry and husband, James of Kenwood, California, Karen Chandler of Bonne Terre, Timothy Morris and wife, Angela of New Haven, Sarah Mullally and husband, Kevin of Cuba, eight great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents and husband, Mrs. Reed was preceded in death by one daughter in infancy, Latheda Reed, six brothers and five sisters.

Private graveside services were conducted at Caledonia Methodist Cemetery in Caledonia, Missouri. In lieu of flowers memorials may to given to the Diabetes Foundation of the Salvation Army in memory of Essie Reed. Arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home.

Benjamin Shoemaker

Benjamin W. Shoemaker of Leasburg, Missouri, son of the late Benjamin and Lillian (Hodge) Shoemaker, passed away at his home on Monday, December 16, 2002 at the age of 49 years.

Benji, as he was known by his family and friends, was born on April 14, 1953 at St. Louis, Missouri. He was raised in the St. Louis area and later graduated school there. He was employed in the shoe making industry and was employed at various times with several of the major companies in the area. In 1971 he moved to Leasburg, Missouri and was employed for a time at Aerofil Industries in Sullivan. He was known by his family as a collector of things and his main interest was trains. He also found pleasure in computers.

He is survived by six brothers, Bennie Shoemaker of St. Louis, Missouri James Shoemaker of St. Louis, Lonnie Shoemaker of Phoenix, Arizona, Richard Shoemaker of Sullivan, Stan Shoemaker of Owensville, Missouri, Lester Shoemaker of Pacific, Missouri, two sisters, Doris Williams of Cuba, Missouri and Trish Sowash of O’Fallon, Missouri, other relatives and friends. Along with his parents, Benjamin was preceded in death by a sister, Judy Herst and two brothers, Vernon and Russell Shoemaker.

It was the desire of Mr. Shoemaker to be cremated. Private family interment of his cremains will be at a later date. Arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Edna E. Minor

Edna E. Minor of Osage Beach, Missouri, wife of the late Harold Minor and daughter of the late Felix and Florence (Bell) Tucker, passed away at Lake Regional Hospital, Osage Beach, Missouri on Sunday, December 15, 2002 at the age of 89 years.

Mrs. Minor was born in Hamilton County, Illinois and raised in Arkansas. On May 30, 1931 she was married to Harold Minor at Mt. Vernon, Illinois and to this marriage two daughters were born. Mrs. Minor was employed as a hairdresser for ten years but for the most part of her life she was a devoted homemaker. She was very family orientated and was especially fond of all her grandchildren. Mrs. Minor found pleasure in crafts and was a dedicated member of Meramec Valley Baptist Church. She had made her home some twenty years in the Lake of the Ozarks area.

Surviving are: two daughters and sons-in-law, Norma and Bruce Bretz of Osage Beach, Missouri and Beverly and Donald Baines of Roach, Missouri, one brother, Arthur Tucker of Akron, Ohio, two sisters, Freida Musgrove of Venice, Florida and Louise Gorman of the state of Washington, 5 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson, other relatives and friends.

Graveside funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 17, 2002 in I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery with Pastor Richard Williams officiating. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Mary Etta Paul

Mary Etta Paul of Sullivan passed away Sunday, December 15, 2002 at the age of 77 years.

Mary Etta was born June 3, 1925 to the late Christian and Martha (Missey) Sherr at Bourbon, Missouri. In 1948 she was married to Trenton A. Paul and three children were born to their marriage. Trenton and Mary made their home in the state of Texas for about fifteen years. Mary was very involved in her church in Texas, and missed her church family very much after returning to Sullivan, approximately five years ago. Upon her return, Mary began attending the First Assembly of God Church in Sullivan. She had a great sense of humor and was loved by many.

She is survived by one son, David Neil Paul of Sullivan, one brother, Benjamin Sherr of the state of Colorado, one sister, Christina Bernard and husband, Britt, of Sedalia, Missouri, special nieces, Cheryl Conaway and Trina Bailey, several grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Trenton Paul, two sons, Michael and Ronald Paul, one brother, Charles Sherr and one sister, Ellen Dominy.

Evelyn L. Schmitt

Evelyn L. Schmitt of Sullivan, passed away Saturday, December 14, 2002 at the age of 72 years.

Evelyn was born on August 19, 1930 to the late Rufus and Ruth (Pratt) Graddy at Bourbon, Missouri. She was one of fourteen children born to their union. One February 23, 1952 Evelyn was married to Virgil Schmitt at Holy Martyrs of Japan Catholic Church. They were blessed with eight children. Evelyn and Virgil lived their entire lives in the Japan and Sullivan areas. Virgin preceded her in death on May 30, 1993. Evelyn was a devoted wife and mother. For many years was employed outside the home, first at Paramount Cap Factory in Bourbon and later as a cook in the public school system. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading romance novels, and flower gardening. Her greatest enjoyment came from spending time with her children and especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Evelyn was a member of Holy Martyrs of Japan Catholic Church.

She is survived by two sons, Allen and Charles Schmitt both of Sullivan, four daughters, Joyce Topolski of Rolla, Jane and Susan Schmitt both of Sullivan, Marilyn Ware and husband, Shannon of Sullivan, six brothers, Don Graddy and wife, Fay of Geyersville, California, Harold Graddy and wife, Micky of Steelville, Ed Graddy and wife, Kathy of Bourbon, Cecil Graddy and wife, Fran of Bourbon, Dean Graddy and wife, Pearly of Bourbon, Ronnie Graddy, of Bourbon, four sisters, Dorothy Mae Whitaker and husband, Buddy of Redwood, Mississippi, Mildred Hurst of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Hilda Phillips of Sullivan, Hazel Pennock and husband, Ronnie of Peoria, Illinois, 10 grandchildren, Gary Whitney and wife, Kim, Tiffany Bandowski and husband, Richard, Michelle Morrell and husband, Mike, Melissa and Charlie Scheer, Laura and Christopher Ware, Justin, Daniel and William Schmitt, 5 great-grandchildren, Hannah Bandowski, Brandon Monroe, Stephanie and Ryan Whitney, and Sky Morrell, brothers and sisters in-law, Alvie and Nadine Schmitt, Raymond and Rosemary Schmitt, Clarence and Mary Lou Schmitt, Clara Rothmeier, Jack and Virginia Cilbulka, Irene Walton, and Carol Schmitt, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral Mass was celebrated 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 17, 2002 from Holy Martyrs of Japan Catholic Church with Rev. Father Don Carey officiating. Interment was in Holy Martyrs Cemetery. Arrangements were under the Eaton Funeral Home.
