Glenn Richard Sparks

Glenn R. Sparks of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Sunday, February 3, 2002 at the age of 64 years.

Mr. Sparks was born at Sullivan, Missouri on March 18, 1937 to Elijah and Alta Huckstep Sparks. He lived the majority of his life in Sullivan except for three years spent in Kansas working on a ranch. He held various jobs throughout his life until ill health caused his early retirement. He was known as a wonderful father and grand-father and was always there for his family when they needed his help, advise or love. Glenn was fond of the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. On May 24, 1958 he was married to Joyce M. Kramer at Sullivan and to this marriage two children were born. Glenn was a member of True Vine Baptist Church of Sullivan.

He is survived by his wife Joyce of the family home, one son Glenn jr. and wife Virginia of Ramsey, Illinois, one daughter, Tyann Bowers of Sullivan, a sister, Madeline Alexander of Sullivan, seven grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Along with his parents, Mr. Sparks was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert and Paul Sparks and two sisters, Wyanetha Casey and Genevieve Lubben.

Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 6, 2002 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Lindell Vawter officiating. Interment was in Reedville Cemetery. Memorials may be given to True Vine Baptist Church Building Fund or Reedville Cemetery Fund.

Lucy M. Long

Lucy M. Long of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Friday, February 1, 2002 at the age of 85 years.

Mrs. Long was born at Leasburg, Missouri on April 17, 1916 to William and Stella (Land) Woods. She made her home there until her marriage to Daniel Long in April of 1937. Lucy was employed at the former International Shoe Company in Sullivan and later worked as a cook in several of the local restaurants. She also aided her husband in their taxi business as a dispatcher and driver. Lucy was a member of First Baptist Church of Leasburg, Missouri and had attended First Baptist Church of Sullivan many years. She was an avid baseball fan in recent years and was known for her great sense of humor and her Good Samaritan conduct.

She is survived by one daughter, Patricia Thomas and husband, David, of Ballwin, Missouri; one son, Wayne Long of Lake Ozark, Missouri; two brothers, Robert Woods and wife, Mary Lou, of St. Clair, Missouri and Everett Woods and wife, Tess, of Leasburg, Missouri; six grandchildren, fifteen step-grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, ten great-great-grandchildren, three great-great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Along with her parents and husband, Mrs. Long was preceded in death by two daughters, Peggy Sappington and Betty Jean Meisner, a still-born son, three other sons, Jim, Leroy and Daniel Long, two brothers, Roy and Donald Woods and two sisters, Alma Eye and Edna Callahan.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 3, 2002 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Paul Gray officiating. Interment was in the I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery. Those who desire may make memorials to the First Baptist Church of Sullivan in memory of Lucy M. Long.

Bonnie B. Lange

Bonnie B. Lange of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Thursday, January 31, 2002 at the age of 93 years.

Mrs. Lange was born on January 2, 1909 in Joplin, Missouri. After graduating from high school in Joplin, she was married to A. J. Mueller. After several years of marriage, Mr. Mueller preceded her in death. Then, in 1978 Bonnie moved to Sullivan, and on October 3, 1978 was joined in marriage to Charles H. Lange. In addition to serving her family as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker, she worked in sales for several years in the clothing industry. In her younger days, Bonnie was athletic and enjoyed sports. In her later years, however, she found pleasure in watching after and caring for little children. She will be remembered and cherished as a very outgoing and caring person.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Lange of Sullivan; two sons, Don Mueller and wife, Pat, of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Carl Mueller of Los Angeles, California; one daughter, Shari Mueller of the state of Virginia; four grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to Mr. Mueller, she was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

A memorial service was conducted at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 9, 2002 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Sullivan with Reverend Jeffrey W. Duncan officiating. In accordance with her wishes, Mrs. Lange’s body was donated to the St. Louis University School of Medicine. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Verna C. Cresswell

Verna C. Cresswell of Bourbon, Missouri passed away Sunday, January 27, 2002 at the age of 89 years.

Mrs. Cresswell was born on October 27, 1912 at Licking, Missouri to Marion and Hattie (Nelson) York. She was raised in Licking and at the age of 21 came to the Bourbon area to work as a waitress. She was employed as a waitress until her marriage to Austin Lewis Cresswell on December 12, 1934. Verna aided her husband on their dairy farm and also kept the record books in her husband’s contracting business. She was a lady with great spirit and a person knew exactly where they stood with her. She expressed her opinions directly and sometimes with much gusto. Verna also enjoyed fishing and the outdoors and was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Bourbon. She will long be remembered as the woman who made the world’s greatest lemon pies.

She is survived by a son Gene Cresswell and wife Bonnie of Rolla, Missouri, two grandsons, Mike Cresswell and wife Janna and Doug Cresswell, two great-grandchildren, Cody and Cortney Cresswell, two sisters, Allena Wofford and Leora Krewson, both of Licking, Missouri, a special niece, Debbie Ivie whom she loved as her own, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents and husband, Verna was preceded in death by infant twin brothers, two other brothers, Cyrus and Rocial York and one sister Eva Hollenbech.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2002 from the Eaton Funeral Chapel in Bourbon with Pastor Mike King officiating. Interment was in Bourbon Cemetery. Those who desire may make memorials to the First Baptist Church of Bourbon.

Dolly Belle Sites

Dolly Belle Sites of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Friday, January 25, 2002 at the age of 94 years.

Dolly was born in St. Louis, Missouri on March 25, 1907 to John Edward and Aurilla (Griffith) Kearney. She was a life-long resident of Sullivan, and was employed many years at the former International Shoe Company until its closing. She was married to Oran Sites and to this marriage one son, Ronald Sites, was born. Dolly was a very benevolent individual who supported many charities. She believed that everyone should give a little in order to make a difference. She was also extremely generous to her family, as she never wanted them to leave her home with an empty stomach or empty handed. Dolly was very proud of all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, and, as such, never forgot a birthday or special occasion. She enjoyed cooking, especially Sunday lunch, and also found pleasure in birds (cardinals and bluebirds were her favorites), cats, and flowers. Every spring Dolly would plant pots of red geraniums and white petunias. Dolly was a member of First Assembly of God in Sullivan. Remembered and cherished will be her birthday cards and gifts, her Sunday lunches with fried chicken and coconut cream pies, her waves goodbye, her stories and songs, and her love for her family.

She is survived by four grandchildren, Randy Sites of Ballwin, Missouri, Terry Sites of Fayetteville, Arkansas, William Sites of Salem, Missouri and Susan Myers of Rolla, Missouri, eight great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Sites was preceded in death by her son, Ronald, one brother, John Kearney, and five sisters, May Havener, Theresa Letner, Stella Ross, Bernice Ray, and Virginia Goddard.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 29, 2002 from the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan with Reverend Robert Middleton officiating. Interment was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Kathleen Jean Weakley

Kathleen Jean Weakley of Sullivan, Missouri passed away at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri at the age of 4 months and 4 days.

Kathleen Jean was born at St. John’s Mercy Hospital in Washington, Missouri on September 20, 2001 to Rodney and Lorraine (Ritchey) Weakley. She was a happy and beautiful baby with a glowing personality. Her brief time with her family built a love and bond that will always be in their hearts and will never be broken.

Along with her parents Rodney and Lorraine, she is survived by four sisters, Brittany Ritchey, Samantha Ulreich, Elizabeth Ulreich, and Rebecca Weakley; one brother, Jayson Ulreich all of the family home; maternal grandparents, Rhonda Ritchey and Ronald Ritchey and wife Diane; paternal grandparents, Theresa Weakley and Jack Weakley and wife Rita; maternal great-grandparents, Glenna and Thomas Ackerman and Raymond and Madeline Ritchey; paternal great-grandmother, Wilma Weakley, special friends, Mike and Michael Pryor, other relatives, and family friends.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 28, 2002 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan, Missouri with the Rev. Theodore Brunnert and Rev. Dr. Kurt Calkins officiating. Interment was in Midlawn Memorial Gardens, Union, Missouri.

Colleen E. Hahn

Colleen E. Hahn of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2002 at the age of 71 years.

Colleen was born January 18, 1931 to the late Raymond and Rosevinetta (Reed) Thompson at St. Louis, Missouri. She grew up in the St. Louis area and attended school there. On November 11, 1945 she was married to Marvin P. Hahn, Sr. at Kirkwood, Missouri and six children were born to their marriage. For most of their married life they made their home near the House Springs area. In 1973 they moved to Sullivan where they remained until their passing. For many years Mrs. Hahn was employed by Sullivan Public School as a bus driver. She enjoyed being with the children as she dearly loved them. She was very musically talented and was able to play many instruments. Her entire family would gather around the piano and sing while she accompanied them. She also enjoyed animals and gardening and especially liked roses. Colleen was a devoted mother, who was protective and loving. Her family was the focus of her life. Mrs. Hahn had attended Faith Assembly of God for the past eight years.

She is survived by two sons, Marvin P. Hahn, Jr. and wife, Cindy of Redbud, Illinois, David Hahn and fiance, Kris Kirkhoeffer both of Waukesha, Wisconsin, four daughters, Brenda Huffman of Sullivan, Patricia Gilmore and husband, Dan of New Athens, Illinois, Audrey Wehlage and husband, Ron of Redbud, Illinois, Colleen Johnson and husband, Jack of Sullivan, six grandchildren, one step-grandchild, three great-grandchildren, one brother, Ronnie Reed and wife, Kim of Brentwood, Missouri, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents, Mrs. Hahn was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin P. Hahn, Sr. in 1990 and two sisters, Evelyn Mesger and Ruth Smith.

Funeral services were conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 25, 2002 from Faith Assembly of God in Sullivan with Pastor Dan Martin officiating. Interment was in Local Cedar Hill Cemetery, Cedar Hill, Missouri. Memorials may be given to the Kidney Foundation in memory of Colleen Hahn. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Junior A. Bartel

Junior A. Bartel of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Monday, January 21, 2002 at the age of 76 years.

Mr. Bartel was born on February 26, 1925 in Gerald, Missouri to George A. and Nellie (Stephens) Bartel. After high school, he entered the United States Army and honorably served his country during World War II. On December 14, 1946 Junior was joined in marriage to Alice J. Reed in Gerald, and to their union two sons were born. He worked diligently for forty years for the Missouri Department of Transportation. He was also a lifetime member of Russell Schmidt VFW Post No. 3987. Junior enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and camping. He will be remembered and cherished as a compassionate and hard-working man who was very devoted to his family.

He is survived by two sons, James Bartel and wife, Verna, of Sullivan, and Richard Bartel and wife, Elizabeth, of Varna, Illinois; two sisters, Doris Marshall and husband, Joe, and Gloria Brand, and her close friend, Dale Blankenship, all of Sullivan; three grandchildren, Keith Bartel and wife, Shandy, and Jennifer and Brian Bartel; two great-grandchildren, Rachel and Clarice Bartel; a special friend, Virginia Hanes of Sullivan; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Bartel was preceded in death by one sister, Patricia Manues.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 24, 2002 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Reverend Oliver Mullen officiating. Interment with military honors was in the I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery. Visitation was from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23, 2002 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan. If desired, contributions may to given to the American Cancer Society or to the American Heart Association in memory of Junior A. Bartel.

Virginia Goddard

Virginia Goddard of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Saturday, January 19, 2002 at the age of 90 years.

Mrs. Goddard was born on March 31, 1911 in St. Louis, Missouri to the late John Edward and Aurilla (Griffith) Kearney. As a young child, she moved with her family to Sullivan, and has remained a lifelong resident of the Sullivan area. On July 19, 1930 Virginia was joined in marriage to Everett A. Goddard in Union, Missouri, and to this union three children were born. In addition to serving her family as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker, she ran the family-owned grocery store, Goddard’s Market, for over twenty-five years. Virginia enjoyed cooking, flowers, and her pets, but she especially found pleasure and took great pride in all of the accomplishments of her grandchildren. She will be remembered and cherished as a very loving and strong person as well as a really “cool” grandma.

She is survived by one son, Gary Goddard and wife, Karen, of Sullivan; two daughters, Launa Goddard of Sullivan and Janet Ghasedi and husband, Ray, of Ballwin, Missouri; one sister, Dolly Sites of Sullivan; six grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Goddard was preceded in death by one brother, John Kearney, and four sisters, May Havener, Theresa Letner, Stella Ross, and Bernice Ray.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23, 2002 from the Chapel of the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Gary Oglesby officiating. Interment was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery. If desired, contributions may be given to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society in memory of Virginia Goddard.
