Keith Goacher

Keith O. Goacher of Sullivan, Missouri passed away at Phelps County Regional Medical Center, Rolla, Missouri, on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 at the age of 76 years.

Mr. Goacher was born August 16, 1925 in St. Louis to the late Glenn and Ruby (Boaz) Goacher. He was raised in Centerville, Illinois and attended Dupo High School. Upon the attack of Pearl Harbor, he enlisted into the U.S. Marine Corps and was a Marine Raider earning two Purple Hearts. On March 3, 1947 he was married to Florence T. Catalina in East St. Louis, Illinois. Florence preceded him in death in January of 1997. Mr. Goacher was employed with the Union Electric Company at the Ashly Plant. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 148, Life member of the D.A.V., Purple Heart Association of Belleville, Marine Raiders Association and American Legion of Belleville.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Karen Stern of Beaufort, Missouri, three grandchildren, Kurt J. Stern, Richard H. Stern and Traci Monk and husband Scott, three great-grandchildren, Erich S. Monk, Addison J. Monk, and Meghan N. Monk, other relatives and friends. Along with his parents and wife, Keith was preceded in death by a brother Wayne, a grandson, Erich Coacher Stern, a nephew Terrence Goacher and a grand-nephew, Daniel Darling.

Funeral services were conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 17, 2001 from Valhalla Gardens of Memory and Funeral Home, 1406 S. 59th Street, Belleville, Illinois. The family received friends from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home. Those who desire may make memorials to the Missouri Veteran’s Home, St. James, Missouri. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Milton "Slim" Williams

Milton W. Williams of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Monday, September 17, 2001 at the age of 85 years.

Mr. Williams was born on March 17, 1916 in Dixon, Missouri to the late Walter and Lila Ann (Lawson) Williams. After being raised in the Dixon area, “Slim,” as he was fondly known by family and friends, was inducted into the United States Army, and honorably served his country during World War II. On November 15, 1940 he was joined in marriage to Velma Lucille Wilson in Dixon, and to their union five children were born. Milton worked as an auto and hydraulics mechanic, as well as a welder. He and his family moved to Sullivan in 1956 and lived there until 1964, when they moved to Hartford, Illinois. While living there, Milton was employed as a welder by Granite City Steel. Then, in 1978 he and Velma returned to Sullivan. He enjoyed fishing, taking long drives through the country, and spending time with his children. Milton was also a member of the Sullivan Masonic Lodge #69 A.F. & A.M. for nearly fifty years. He will be remembered and cherished as a great listener, and as a kind and generous man who would help anyone who was in need.

He is survived by his wife, Velma Williams of Sullivan; one son, John Williams and fiance, Leona Goodbar, of Sullivan; four daughters, Margaret Murphy and husband, Dan, of Wildwood, Missouri, Carolyn Martin and husband, Gary, of Ferndale, Washington, Judy Davis and husband, Ray, of Fithian, Illinois, and Cindy Machelett and husband, Micah, of Sullivan; twelve grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to his parents, Mr. Williams was preceded in death by four brothers, Earl, Howard, Woodrow, and Winston Williams.

Funeral services were conducted at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 20, 2001 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Scott Perry officiating. Private burial was held at Wheeler Cemetery in Dixon, Missouri. If desired, contributions may be made to the Sullivan Masonic Lodge #69 A.F. & A.M. in memory.

Letha McCleary

Letha F. McCleary of Sullivan, Missouri passed away at the Meramec Nursing Center on Saturday, September 15, 2001 at the age of 72 years.

Letha was born on October 18, 1928 near Sullivan and had lived the majority of her life in the Sullivan area. She was the daughter of James B. and Bernice Irene (Gallinger) Sappington. Letha was a graduate of Sullivan High School and was known for her outgoing personality and spirit. For a time, she was employed at Paramount Headwear in Bourbon and later held various jobs throughout her life. Letha was fondly known as “the Cake Lady” who for some 31 years baked cakes for any and all occasions. On August 4, 1952 she was married to Willard Gene McCleary in Sullivan and to this marriage two children were born. She will be lovingly remembered as a lady who never met a stranger and would extend assistance to anyone needing help. Letha loved music and dancing and would play the accordion in her brothers’ band.

She is survived by her husband Gene of the family home; one daughter, Melinda Alene McCleary of Sullivan; one son, Michael Gene McCleary of Bourbon; one brother, Carl Sappington of Stanton; one grandson, Shaun Michael McCleary; a niece, Myrna Parker, nephews, Carl Sappington, Jr., Timothy Sappington, other nieces and nephews and many friends. Along with her parents, a brother, James Sappington, preceded Letha in death.

It was Mrs. McCleary’s desire that private family services be provided followed by cremation. Inurnment was in Stanton Cemetery, on Wednesday, September 19, 2001. Arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Elmo Montgomery

Elmo G. Montgomery of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Monday, September 24, 2001 at the age of 77 years.

Mr. Montgomery was born on March 3, 1924 at Bismark, Missouri to Harry and Alta (Penberthy) Montgomery. On August 25, 1945 he was married to Bernice L. Queen at Potosi, Missouri and to this union three children were born. Elmo honorably served his country during WWII with the U.S. Army in the occupation forces of Japan. After the war, he became employed at the St. Joe Lead Mine until 1958 when he went to work at Pea Ridge Mine as a Millright. Elmo had made his home in Sullivan since 1963. He was a man whose family was important to him. He could fix anything and was very mechanically inclined. He loved bowling and music and especially horseshoes. Elmo was a member of Temple Baptist Church and member of the Senior Men’s Sunday School Class of which he taught for a time.

He is survived by two sons, Billy Montgomery and wife, Jeanne, and Terry Montgomery and wife, Joyce, all of Sullivan; one daughter, Becky West and husband, Greg, of Sullivan; two brothers, Leo and Jack Montgomery; six sisters, Virgiline Forinash, Fern Chamanick, Leotha Hardy, Frankie Conway, Ruby Dix and Norma Jean Hopp, seven grandchildren, Douglas Montgomery, Andrea Levinson and husband Alex, Michael and Steven Montgomery, Cory, Nicole, and Christopher West; 3 great-grandchildren, Nathan Levinson, Vinny and Grant Montgomery, other relatives and friends. Along with his parents and wife, Elmo was preceded in death by a sister, Almyra and two brothers, Buss and Edmond.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday from Temple Baptist Church in Sullivan with interment in Oddfellows Memorial Cemetery. Visitation for Mr. Elmo Montgomery will be from 4:30 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan and Thursday from 9 a.m. until time of service at 11 at Temple Baptist Church. Those who desire may make memorials to the American Cancer Association or the Music Department of Temple Baptist Church.

Mary Jane Dace

Mary Jane Dace of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Tuesday, October 2, 2001 at the age of 75 years.

Mrs. Dace was born on December 14, 1925 at Keysville, Missouri to Zachariah Taylor and Cora Violet (Dunlap) Key. Shortly after her birth, her family moved to the Steelville, Missouri area and then later to Sullivan where Mary Jane had since lived. On July 29, 1943 she was married to Randell “Cotton” Dace at Sullivan and to this union four children were born. Cotton preceded Mary Jane in death on June 19, 1988. Mary Jane was known as a hard worker who was strong willed but quite, reserved but had a good humor. She loved family dinners and enjoyed cooking for them. She was also very fond of her dogs and treated them very much like family.

She is survived by two sons Michael Dace and wife Ann, and Tim Dace and wife Shirley all of Sullivan, two daughters, Patty Gallagher and husband Tom and Christine Dace all of Sullivan, one brother, Noah Key and wife Dee of Aubrey, Texas, 7 grandchildren, Matthew Dace and wife Lisa, Geoffrey, Stuart, Nathan and Stephen Dace, Tammy Daniel and husband Andy and Shannon Heinle and husband Jim, 8 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents and husband, Mary Jane was preceded in death by four brothers, Esco, Elmer, Howard and Robert Key, and by two sisters, Virgie May and Anna May Minor.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 5, 2001 from Temple Baptist Church in Sullivan with Pastor Scott Perry officiating. Interment will follow in Oddfellows Memorial Cemetery. Visitation for Mrs. Mary Jane Dace will be from 5 until 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan. Those who desire may make memorials to the Humane Society.

Amy Elizabeth Hill

Amy Elizabeth Hill of St. Clair, Missouri, passed away Sunday, September 23, 2001 at the age of 18 years.

Amy was born at Great Lakes, Illinois on May 5, 1983 to Douglas Hill and Corban Brewer Yates. Amy lived for a time in Sullivan and attended Sullivan Schools. She also attended Temple Baptist Church where she excepted Christ as her Savior and was baptized by her grandfather Warren Brewer. Amy had moved to St. Clair over a year ago. She was always full of life and found interest in everything around her. Amy was always on the go and found pleasure in music and enjoyed reading. She was a member of Spring Bluff Baptist Church. She will be fondly remembered by her family and friends.

She is survived by her mother, Corban Yates and husband, Robby of Sullivan, her father Douglas Hill and wife, Lois, one brother Daniel Warren Hill, two sisters, Rebecca and Deborah Hill and a step-brother Kyle Hill all of Potosi, Missouri, grandparents, Warren and Sis Brewer of Sullivan. A son, Sebastian Boyer, preceded her in death.

A private memorial service was conducted October 1, 2001 from the Eaton Funeral Home. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home of Sullivan.

Wilma J. Wallace

Wilma J. Wallace of Manchester, Missouri passed away on Thursday, September 27, 2001 at the age of 78 years.

Ms. Wallace was born on September 9, 1923 in Harrisburg, Illinois to the late Wilson and Lula (Gulley) Stricklin. She was raised in the Harrisburg area, and baptized within the Baptist faith as a young adult. In 1961 Wilma moved to St. Louis County. She worked as a school bus driver for over ten years, and also as a domestic housekeeper for over twenty years. She especially loved to cook for her family, and also enjoyed gardening, flowers, and collecting curios. Wilma will be remembered and cherished as a strong yet gentle woman, who was extremely loving and dedicated toward her children and extended family.

She is survived by two sons, Terry Gibbs and wife, Jan, of Cedar Hill, Missouri and Lindell Gibbs and wife, Karen, of Bourbon, Missouri; one daughter, Carla Saltzman of Fenton, Missouri; one brother, Walter Stricklin of Harrisburg, Illinois; two sisters, Dorothy Reynolds of Edwardsville, Illinois and Denia McConnell of Harrisburg, Illinois; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents, and several brothers and sisters, Wilma was preceded in death by one son, Mickey Joe Gibbs, and one granddaughter, Gayle Lynne Gibbs.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 30, 2001 from the Eaton Chapel in Bourbon, Missouri with Pastor Mike King officiating. Interment was in the Bourbon Cemetery. If desired, memorials may be given to the Leukemia Society of America in memory of Wilma Wallace. Arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Bourbon and Sullivan.

Reba Amann

Reba Mae Amann nee Farris of St. Louis, Missouri passed away Saturday, September 29, 2001at the age of 72 years.

Reba was born on July 2, 1929 at Hinch, Missouri to the late Fred and Julia Woods Farris, the fourth of seven children. She attended and graduated from Bourbon High School. After high school she worked as a waitress and later as a telephone operator (old type switchboard). At age 20 Reba moved to St. Louis, and on June 24, 1967 she was married to Joseph Amann. Joe passed away suddenly on July 15, 1987. Reba was employed as a secretary to local physician for twenty years. She was also a 30 plus year employee at Daniel and Henry Insurance Company Concannon Group until her retirement just two years ago. She was also and a member of YWCA.

Reba was a true “health nut” she watched her diet faithfully and exercise was a big part of her daily routine. She walked, exercised, biked and swam 92 laps (5 miles) regularly. She had a deep love for animals, and always had one or two dogs. Reba was diagnosed with an aggressive malignant brain tumor 2 years ago, and was given one year to survive. She was proud of the fact that she had beaten the odds to 2 years. She underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatments along with experimental radiation treatments late in the disease. Although she had some progression of symptoms, she remained optimistic and defiant in her fight until just 2 months ago. Dale Pidcock entered Reba’s life about 10 years ago; first as a neighbor, grass cutter, special friend and finally her loving care giver until the end. She also had a wonderful nurses aid, Matty Adkins who helped care for her the past 2 months.

She is survived by one brother, William Farris, one sister, Sadie Woods, a special friend, Dale Pidcock, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents, Mrs. Amann was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Amann, three brothers, Harold Farris, Richard “ED” Farris and James “Ben” Farris, and one sister, Jane Harmon.

Funeral services were conducted 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 3, 2001 from the chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Greg Smith officiating. Interment was in Lea Cemetery, Leasburg, Missouri. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Humane Society or the American Cancer Society in memory of Reba Amann.

Henry P. Edwards

Henry P. Edwards of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Sunday, September 30, 2001 at the age of 78 years.

Mr. Edwards was born on September 12, 1923 to the late Robert and Haney (Lamascus) Edwards in Steelville, Missouri. He grew up and attended school in the Steelville area, and on September 18, 1943 was married to Melba Anderson at Potosi, Missouri. Henry and Melba have made their home for the past forty years on Highway K, where he enjoyed hunting and fishing in his spare time. He was employed for many years as a laborer in the commercial construction industry. Henry was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and also taught the preschool Sunday school class. He loved children and especially enjoyed spending time with his great-granddaughters, Kassidy and Caitlin. A kind and loving husband, father, grandfather great-grandfather, brother, and friend, Henry will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Melba Edwards of Sullivan; one daughter, Ruth Benay Jackson and husband, Larry, of Sullivan; one grandson, Joseph Taylor and wife, Kerry, of Sullivan; two great-grandchildren, Kassidy and Caitlin Taylor, both of Sullivan; two sisters, Bea Edwards and Rose Halbert, both of Steelville, Missouri; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Along with his parents, Henry was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence and Woodrow Edwards and one sister, Nell McKuen.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 3, 2001 from the Hassebroek Chapel in Sullivan with interment in New Chapel Hill Cemetery. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the family of Henry P. Edwards. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.
