Elmer Edmund Tyree

Elmer Edmund Tyree of Bourbon, Missouri passed away at the family home on Monday, September 3, 2001 at the age of 98 years.

Mr. Tyree was born on October 17, 1902 to the late James Samuel and Cora Jane (Benson) Tyree in Oak Hill Township, north of Bourbon, on the farm of his grandfather, David M. Tyree. He was educated at Oak Hill School in Crawford county. Elmer married Arlie Colisity Murphy on June 15, 1923 in Kansas City, Missouri, and to their union four children were born. They spent most of their lives in Crawford County, except for a few years in St. Louis. Elmer and Arlie enjoyed a long married life together of 76 years.

Elmer distinguished himself as a farmer, as well as the director and chairman of the Federal Land Bank in Rolla. He was the oldest Democratic Party County Central Committeeman in the Show-Me-State. Elmer served as a member of the Oak Hill School Board, the Bourbon School Board, the County Welfare Board, the MFA Board, the Bourbon Special Road District, and the County Extension Board. He also served as a Presiding Judge and County Commissioner for four years. In addition, he was a member of the Sullivan I.O.O.F. Lodge #156. As an active participant in so many organizations, Elmer earned community recognition as a dedicated public servant for the conscientious, proficient, and professional manner in which he served others.

He is survived by four children, Bernadine Rosier of Sherwood, Oregon, Shirley R. Williams and husband, Clifford R., of Williamsburg, Virginia, Sheila F. Wood and husband, William G., of Rolla, Missouri, and Roger E. Tyree of Leasburg, Missouri; thirteen grandchildren, Claudia Howell of Salem, Oregon, Joan Reynolds and Deborah Laboyen, both of Sherwood, Oregon, Melanie Williams of Lake Oswego, Oregon, Gregory Wood and Christopher Williams, both of Chicago, Illinois, Lesley Hill of Millersville, Maryland, Diane Stirn of Brookfield, Wisconsin, Celia Williams of New York, New York, Lisa Wood of Madison, Wisconsin, Teresa Cusick of St. Clair, Missouri, Linda Wood of Redmond, Washington, and Roger Wayne Tyree of Sullivan, Missouri; thirteen great-grandchildren, Coral McDonald of California, Stephanie Reynolds, Jamie Laboyen, and Devon Swank of Oregon, Braden Hill of Maryland, Samantha, Joseph, and Stephanie Stirn and Allison Packard, all of Wisconsin, Brandon, Rachael, and Joshua Cusick and Michael Wayne Tyree, all of Missouri; one great-great-grandchild, Tiaja Chardonnay McCay of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; two sisters-in-law, Fern Murphy Oster of South Carolina and Mrs. Ted (Emma) Murphy of Illinois; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Tyree was preceded in death by three brothers, William Franklin, Walter Scott, and James Vernon Tyree, four sisters, Mary “Edith” Higgins, Carrie May Jenkins, Opal Clementine Kluesner, and Roberta Mable Murphy, and one granddaughter, Charlotte Sue Williams.

Funeral services in celebration of Elmer’s long and productive life was conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2001 from the Chapel of the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Connie Gallagher officiating. Interment was in Crow Cemetery, (rural) Sullivan, Missouri. Pallbearers were Gregory A. Wood, Roger Wayne Tyree, Christopher P. Williams, Albert Bishop, William G. Wood, and Clifford R. Williams. Honorary pallbearers were Norris Jenkins, Wilbur Ray Jenkins, Melvin Jenkins, Vernon Higgins, Leland Higgins, C. Dale Murphy, Neil C. Murphy, Donald R. Chapman, Howard Smith, James (PG) Smith, James Manion, Robert Culver, Eugene Johnson, Eugene Souders, and Gene Spurgeon. Elmer’s favorite songs were sung by James K. Tice and accompanied by David Hartwick. If desired, contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Bourbon or to Sullivan Hospice in memory of Elmer Edmund Tyree. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Chapel of Bourbon.

James J. Austin

James J. Austin of Mountain View, Missouri passed away on Saturday, September 1, 2001 at the age of 57 years.

Mr. Austin was born on August 31, 1944 in Cuba, Missouri to Jesse Raymond and Gladys Marie (Brewer) Austin. At an early age he moved to the state of California with his family, but returned to Missouri as a teenager and graduated from the Washington High School. Following graduation, James enlisted in the United States Air Force and honorably served his country for four years during the Vietnam era. He moved to Mountain View in approximately 1977, and worked as an inspector for the Mountain View Fabricating Company for over twenty years. James enjoyed hunting, fishing, and leatherworks. He will be remembered and cherished as a somewhat quiet and reserved man who gave great attention to detail.

He is survived by one son, Andrew Austin and wife, Erin, of Aviano, Italy; his mother, Gladys Hamilton of Union, Missouri; two brothers, Jesse Austin and wife, Lynne, of Winona, Missouri and Richard Austin of Farmington, Missouri; three sisters, Betty McDaniel and husband, Robert, and Patricia Waterhouse and husband, Gary, all of Pacific, Missouri, and Sherry Amelung and husband, Robert, of St. Ann, Missouri; many nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends. Mr. Austin was preceded in death by his father, Jesse Raymond Austin.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 6, 2001 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Robert Sneed officiating. Interment was in the Hodge-Enloe Cemetery.

Arthur A. Schmuke

Arthur A. Schmuke of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Sunday, September 9, 2001 at the age of 79 years.

Mr. Schmuke was born on January 11, 1922 at Stanton, Missouri to Robert and Edith (Door) Schmuke. On February 14, 1951 he was married to Alice Louise Doyle in St. Louis, Missouri. Mr. Schmuke was employed as a machinist and later a supervisor at the former Magus Metals now known as NL Industries. He lived in the St. Louis area until retirement where he then moved back to Sullivan.

He is survived by one son, Richard Schmuke and wife D.J. of O’Fallon, Missouri; one brother, James Schmuke of St. Louis; four sisters, Gussie Sappington and Betty Koenig, both of Sullivan, Mildren Smith of St. Ann, Missouri, and Rita Voepel of St. Charles, Missouri; 4 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Mr. Schmuke was the beloved husband of the late Alice Schmuke, dear brother of the late Elmer and Vernon Schmuke, Maried Beckman and Theresa Charboneau.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 in I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery in Sullivan, Missouri. Visitation for Mr. Schmuke will be from 7 – 9 p.m. on Tuesday, from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Sterling Carpenter

Sterling L. Carpenter of Rosebud, Missouri passed away Saturday, September 8, 2001 at the age of 75 years.

Mr. Carpenter was born on April 22, 1926 at Sunlight, Kentucky. He was raised there for a time but later moved to the St. Louis area and was employed with the Vess Bottling Co. for 27 years. He later moved to the Rosebud and became employed with the Bull Moose Tube Company as a steelworker. On May 21 1946 he was married to Eileen Farrell and to this marriage four children were born. Mr. Carpenter was an accomplished musician who loved playing the guitar, especially country music.

He is survived by his wife Eileen of the family home, three sons; Roger Carpenter and wife Melinda of Rosebud, Missouri, Greg Carpenter of St. Louis, Missouri and Kenneth Carpenter of St. James, Missouri; one daughter, Mary Carpenter, of Rosebud, Missouri, one sister, Delores Malinski of Belleville, Illinois, 8 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Along with his parents, one brother, Buster Carpenter and one sister, Myrtle Larlie, preceded Mr. Carpenter in death.

Graveside funeral services were conducted at 4:00 p.m. Monday, September 10, 2001 in Bourbon Cemetery, Bourbon, Missouri. Arrangements are under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Dorothy J. Bartle

Dorothy J. Bartle of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2001 at the age of 71 years.

Dorothy was born in St. Louis, Missouri on January 30, 1930 to Eulus
and Ora (Wages) Richardson. She was raised in the Bourbon area and became known to many as a caring and loving woman. On April 19, 1947 she was married to George E. Bartle who preceded her in death in 1989. Dorothy was employed as a Certified Nurse’s Aide at Sullivan Community Hospital and later Beverly Healthcare. In addition, she was a cashier for a time at Bobber Travel Center in Sullivan and later retired from there. Dorothy loved painting and her many pictures adorn homes around the area. Her true love was for her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking and crocheting and Cardinal’s baseball. Dorothy was also a member of New Testament Baptist Church of Sullivan.

She is survived by one son, Gary Bartle and wife Mary of Sullivan, one daughter, Wanda Roach and husband Larry of Sullivan, 7 grandchildren, Shannon Roach and wife Staci, Travis Roach, Tim Bartle, Tammy Franklin and husband Danny, Cory Bartle and wife Kylie, Tome and Brandi Bartle, 9 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents and husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by an infant son, Thomas George Bartle, a daughter, Kathy Bartle and one sister, Mille Copeland

Memorial funeral services were conducted at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 13, 2001 from the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan with private interment services on Friday, September 14, 2001. All arrangements were under the direction of the Eaton Funeral Home of Sullivan.

Clarise Ficke Mesger

Clarice Ficke Mesger of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Monday, September 10, 2001 at the age of 96 years.

Mrs. Mesger was born on March 13, 1905 at Elmont, Missouri to the late Michael and Laura J. (Webb) Carey. She was raised in the Sullivan area, and, as a young woman, moved to St. Louis. While living there, Clarice worked for Century Electric. She later moved back to Sullivan, and worked for a number of years as a machine operator for the International Shoe Company. On December 16, 1938 Clarice was married to Walter E. Ficke at Troy, Missouri. Mr. Ficke preceded her in death in 1956. Then, on November 25, 1959 she was married to Frank Mesger at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Sullivan. Mr. Mesger also preceded her in death in 1989. Clarice was a member of the St. Matthew Lutheran Church, the church’s Ladies Aide organization, and a charter member of the Russell Schmidt VFW Post 3987 Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed watching baseball, especially the St. Louis Cardinals, and playing cards. Mrs. Mesger will be remembered and cherished as a very caring person who really enjoyed life.

She is survived by four stepdaughters, Dorothy Ficke Descamps of the state of Montana, Anita Favre of Sullivan, Earline Ware and husband, George, of Bourbon, Missouri, and Norma Turley and husband, Alan, of Fenton, Missouri; twelve step-grandchildren; eleven step-great-grandchildren; two nephews, Winston Harmon of House Springs, Missouri and Jerry Carey and wife, Viva Lou, of Sullivan; one niece, Catherine “Dolly” Chapman of Sullivan; one great-nephew, Jim Woods and wife, Betty Jo, of Sullivan; three great-nieces, Helen Ruwwe and husband, Selden, of Cuba, Missouri, Bonnie Medling and husband, Jack, of Sullivan and Donna Rutledge and husband, Larry, of Union, Missouri; other relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents and husbands, Mrs. Mesger was preceded in death by one stepson, Robert Mesger, two brothers, Eddie and Joseph Carey, two half-sisters, Allie Harmon and Grace Larkin, and one niece, Harriette Woods.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Reverend Jeffrey W. Duncan officiating. Interment was in Schmidt Cemetery. If desired, contributions may be made to St. Matthew Lutheran Church or to the Gideons in memory of Clarice Ficke Mesger.

Harold Head

Harold Russell Head of Mobile, Alabama passed away September 4, 2001 at the age of 70 years.

Mr. Head was born on January 15, 1931 at Fredericktown, Missouri to the late Noel Lester and Mabel Ann (Senter) Head. He was raised in that area and later enlisted in the U.S. Army. Mr. Head was a 22 year member of the Special Forces (Green Berets) where he was awarded 3 Bronze Stars, 1 Silver Star, and 3Purple Hearts. He attained the rank of Sergeant after serving in Korea and five voluntary duties in Viet Nam. Mr. Head was truly a modern day hero, not only to his country but to his family as well. Upon his retirement from the Army, Mr. Head was employed with the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier. He retired from that position a few years ago. On June 1, 1973 he was married to Ruth Cook Hillman. They enjoyed traveling and visiting various parts of the country. Mr. Head enjoyed playing golf and was also known as a man about the house as he was always fixing things and working with his hands. Mr. Head was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Mobile, Alabama.

He is survived by his wife Ruth of the family home, two sons, Russell Kent Head of Columbus, Georgia and Roger Hillman of San Clemente California, two daughters, Leah Lutheran of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Dee London of Sullivan, three brothers, Michael Head of Fredericktown, Missouri, Paul Head of Athens, Tennessee, and David Head of Festus, Missouri, one sister, Sue Skaggs of Fredericktown, Missouri, 8 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Along with his parents, Mr. Head was preceded in death by two brothers, Virgil and James Head and one sister, Bonnie Cooper.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2001 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Jeff Bent officiating. Interment was in I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery, Sullivan, Missouri.

Helen DeLongchamp

Helen R. DeLongchamp of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2001 at the age of 72 years.

Miss DeLongchamp was born on May 4, 1929 at North Lake, Michigan to the late Peter and Aldea (Morin) DeLongchamp. She was known as a dedicated worker throughout her life. Helen worked through high school at Eckland Laundry. Later she was employed at Michigan Bell Telephone in Marquette, Michigan. Helen enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was assigned at the Pentagon in Washington D.C. as a staff car driver. After her honorable discharge, Helen moved to Wichita, Kansas and was employed by Boeing. In 1964, she moved to Sullivan and was employed at Nu-Way Cleaners until ill health caused her retirement. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her loved ones. Helen was a member of Saint Anthony Parish and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 3987 of Sullivan.

She is survived by one brother, Jack DeLongchamp and wife Brenda of Beaumont, California, two sisters, Jeannie Mosca and Alice Thexton, both of Sullivan, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 14, 2001 from Saint Anthony Catholic Church in Sullivan. Interment was in Ishpeming, Michigan. Masses to Saint Anthony or to the Relay for Life would be appreciated. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.
