Jane S. Helm

Jane S. Helm of Washington, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, July 25, 2001 at the age of 75 years.

Mrs. Helm was born in St. Louis, Missouri on September 30, 1925 to Milton and Amelia Strauser Stierman. On December 17, 1941 she was married to Curtis Helm at Warrenton, Missouri and to this marriage two children were born. She was employed as a teller and accountant at First National Bank of Wellston for 13 years. Upon her husband’s retirement in 1978, they came to the Bourbon, Missouri area and later purchased a home in Washington, Missouri. They divided their time between the two areas but most recently lived the majority in Washington. Mrs. Helm loved the outdoors and found pleasure in walking and gardening. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church of Cuba, Missouri, Garden Club of Washington, and Order of Eastern Star.

She is survived by her husband, Curtis Helm, one son, Curtis G. Helm and wife Barbara of O’Fallon, Missouri, one daughter, Vicki Lynn Helm of Colorado Springs, Colorado, 3 grandchildren, Scott, Dawn and Nicole, one great-grandchild, Drake, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 27, 2001 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Gary Mace officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, rural Cuba, Missouri. The family desires memorial contributions to the Relay for Life/Cancer Research.

Eugene W. "Pappy" Hofstetter

Eugene W. “Pappy” Hofstetter of Sullivan, Missouri passed away at his home on Thursday evening, July 26, 2001 at the age of 98 years, 6 months and 15 days.

Pappy, as his family and friends knew him, was born in St. Louis, Missouri on January 11, 1903. He was one of eight children born to the marriage of Franz and Wilhemina (Thieman) Hofstetter. He was raised in the St. Louis area and on December 15, 1928 was married to Alma Sara Walker. Two children, Eugene and Gloria were born into this union. Pappy had a variety of jobs during his lifetime, which included employment at Pevely Dairy and later the small arms plant in St. Louis. He later came to Sullivan where he farmed and was employed at the Meramec State Park in the maintenance department. After a time, he returned to work at Pevely Dairy as a local distributor of milk products in the Sullivan area. Pappy was known as a hard worker who found pleasure in farming and fishing. He was a member or Holy Martyrs of Japan Parish and a charter member of the Sullivan Country Club.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Eugene L. and Joan Hofstetter of Sullivan, his daughter, Gloria Schatz of Gerald, Missouri, one sister, Helen Eno of Peoria, Arizona, two grandchildren, Angela Lea Bloomner and husband Darrel and Rick G. Hofstetter and wife Jeanette all of Sullivan, five great-grandchildren, Cassandra, Veronica and Robert Bloomner and Miranda and Kearstin Hofstetter, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Along with his parents, Mr. Hofstetter was preceded by his wife Alma, six brothers, Frank, Edward, Arthur, Clarence, Leonard and Joseph Hofstetter and a son-in-law Leonard “Buck” Schatz.

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 30, 2001 from Holy Martyrs of Japan Catholic Church with the Rev. Don Carey officiating. Interment was the parish cemetery. A time of visitation was held Sunday evening at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan where a vigil wake service was celebrated at 7:00 p.m. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri. For those who desire, masses or memorials to Unity Hospice would be appreciated by the family.

Bransferd A. Tayloe

Bransferd A. Tayloe of Rosebud, Missouri passed away Friday, August 17, 2001 at the age of 72 years.

Mr. Tayole was born December 24, 1928 in Rosebud, Missouri to the late Frank and Anna Hennemann Tayloe. He was a life-long resident of this area except for a short time spent in military service when he served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. On July 1, 1967 he was married to Dolores Rebura. They made their home on the family farm near Rosebud where Bransferd farmed for a time. He also was a long time employee of Fred Weber Construction and was a heavy equipment operator. He was known as a “straight shooter” and enjoyed working with his hands.

He is survived by his wife Dolores of the family home, one sister, Berneth Dieckgrafe and husband Harold of Hermann, Missouri, one sister-in-law, Hester Tayloe, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Along with his parents, Bransferd was preceded in death by a brother, Terrel.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with interment in Schmidt Cemetery. Visitation for Mr. Bransferd Tayloe will from 4:30 until 9 p.m. on Monday from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Alexander "Sam" Thomeczek

Alexander “Sam” Thomeczek of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Wednesday, August 1, 2001 at the age of 80 years.

Mr. Thomeczek was born on January 25, 1921 in Clover Bottom, Missouri to the late Frank and Matilda (Klenke) Thomeczek. He was raised in Clover Bottom, and has continued to be a lifelong resident of the Sullivan area. On June 7, 1947 he was joined in holy matrimony to Marguerite Weiskopf at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Sullivan, and to their union eight children were born. “Sam,” as he was fondly known by family and friends, worked and supported his family throughout his entire life as a farmer. He served as a project leader for the Spring Bluff 4-H Club for many years, and also was a member of the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association. He was a faithful member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Sullivan for most of his life. “Sam” found pleasure in fishing, hunting, and gardening. He will be lovingly remembered and cherished as a hard-working, fun-loving man who possessed a great sense of humor. He will also continue to be admired as “a good role model,” “a good provider,” and a man who “never met a stranger.”

He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Thomeczek of Sullivan; three sons, Ronnie Thomeczek of Bourbon, Missouri, Kenny Thomeczek and wife, Terry and Tommy Thomeczek and wife, Mary Beth, all of Spring Bluff, Missouri; four daughters, Rickie Sue Farris and husband, Jim of Eureka, Missouri, Mary Wilmesher and husband, Dennis of Union, Missouri, Margie Hodge and husband, Harold of Rolla, Missouri, and Jane Frolker and husband, Curt of Owensville, Missouri; one daughter-in-law, Shelby Dunn and husband, Darryl of Spring Bluff; two sisters, Anne Purcell of the state of Florida, and Matilda Dains of Great Falls, Montana; eighteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to his parents, Mr. Thomeczek was preceded in death by one son, Gary Thomeczek, and four brothers and two sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 3, 2001 from the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Sullivan with Reverend Father Theodore Brunnert officiating. Interment was in the Laubinger Memorial Cemetery. If desired, contributions may be made to the Laubinger Memorial Cemetery or for Masses in memory of Alexander “Sam” Thomeczek. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Audrey Withers

Audrey F. Withers of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Thursday, August 16, 2001 at the age of 82 years.

She is survived by two children, Timothy Withers and Lorna Deubelbiss Withers, both of Sullivan; two brothers, Newell Schmidt of Sullivan and Roland Schmidt of Edmond, Oklahoma; one sister, Melba Hixon of San Louis Obispo, California; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 18, 2001 from the Chapel of the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan. Visitation for Audrey F. Withers will be from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Charles "Butch" Slezak

Charles “Butch” Slezak of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Thursday, August 16, 2001 at the age of 53 years.

Mr. Slezak was born on December 14, 1947 in St. Louis, Missouri to Charles G. and Dorothy L. (Dunnigan) Slezak. “Butch,” as he was fondly known to family and friends, was raised in Sullivan, graduated from Sullivan High School in 1965, and continued to be a lifelong resident of Sullivan. After high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force, and honorably served his country during the Vietnam era until 1969, having attained the rank of Sergeant. “Butch” worked in Sullivan as an office manager for the W. H. Powell Lumber Company and the Koelling Lumber Company, and later became the owner of the Meramec Lumber Company. He also served as the manager of the Pioneer Truss Company in Owensville. “Butch” was an avid bowler, and, as such, attended many bowling tournaments on the local, state, and national level. He also enjoyed collecting baseball cards, movies, and books, but found special pleasure in spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren. “Butch” was a member of the New Testament Baptist Church in Sullivan. He will be remembered and cherished as a fun-loving person who possessed a great sense of humor, and also as a man who never met a stranger.

He is survived by one son, Jason Slezak and wife, Carrie, of Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany; one daughter, Carma Smith of Bourbon, Missouri; his parents, Charles and Dorothy Slezak of Sullivan; one brother, Tom Slezak and wife, Roxanne, of Sullivan; one sister, Linda Leake and husband, Jay, of Sullivan; three grandchildren, Lacie and Hannah Slezak and Wyatt Smith; two nieces, Kylie Slezak and Lisa Leake; one nephew, Keith Slezak; other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 19, 2001 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Oliver Mullen officiating. Interment was in the I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery. If desired, contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation in memory of Charles “Butch” Slezak.

Dorothy M. Record

Dorothy M. Record of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Tuesday, August 14, 2001 at the age of 77 years.

Mrs. Record was born on August 25, 1923 in Centerville, Missouri to John Walter and Josephine (Hines) Cross. As a young girl, she moved with her family to the Sullivan area, where she has continued to be a lifelong resident. On January 10, 1942 Dorothy was married to Marcus Laverne Record in Union, Missouri, and to their union four children were born. Throughout her adult years, she served her family as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and homemaker. Dorothy especially enjoyed working with flowers, reading, and doing crossword puzzles. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Sullivan. She will be remembered and cherished as an extremely loving and caring person, who also possessed a great sense of humor.

She is survived by her husband, Marcus Laverne Record of Sullivan; one son, Floyd Ray Record and wife, Judith of Sullivan; three daughters, Shirley Weber and husband, Joe of Cuba, Missouri, Peggy Strong and husband, Gary of Jefferson City, Missouri, and Teresa Hofmeister and husband, David of St. Peters, Missouri; two sisters, Stella Merit and Jewel Bartel, both of Sullivan; nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Record was preceded in death by four brothers, Earl, Ernest, Raymond, and Arvil Cross, and one sister, Bertha Barron.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 16, 2001 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Paul Gray officiating. Interment was in the I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery. If desired, contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Sullivan in memory of Mrs. Dorothy M. Record.

Jerry R. Tucker

Jerry Ray “Sarge” Tucker of Bourbon, Missouri passed away on Tuesday, August 7, 2001 at the age of 70 years.

Jerry was born on March 5, 1931 at Gideon, Missouri to Ila Faye Steenburgen. In the last days of W.W.II, at age 15, he enlisted in the United State Marine Corp. He served in China and Guam. Jerry retired from the Marine Corp in 1970 as a Master Sergeant after faithfully serving his country also in Korea and Vietnam. On August 20, 1954 he was married to Elsie A. Card and to this union five children were born. Jerry later worked at the former Ramsey Corporation in Sullivan and Bank of Bourbon. He was a member of Sullivan Lodge No. 69 A.F.& A.M., Scottish Rite, and Shriners. Jerry was also a lifetime member of Russell Schmidt VFW Post No. 3987 and the American Legion.

Surviving along with his wife Elsie are: one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Tucker of Waverly, Iowa; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lynda and Dave LaRocque of Forsyth, Missouri and Laura and Bob Cartwright of Stanton, Missouri; 7 grandchildren, Shay Duggan, Ryan Tucker, Nic and Chris LaRocque, Jerry and Chelsie Cartwright and Shawna Parnell; two great-grandchildren Briley and Cassie Duggan, other relatives and many friends. Jerry was preceded in death by two sons, Jerry Lynn and John Wayne Tucker, his mother, Ila Fay Steenburgen, and step-father, Horace G. Steenburgen.

Private family services were conducted by the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Naomi Brueseke

Naomi L. Brueseke of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Tuesday, August 7, 2001 at the age of 62 years.

Naomi was born on February 15, 1939 in Sullivan, Missouri to George and Wilma Boster Tutterrow. She was one of three daughters born to this union. Naomi was a graduate of Sullivan High School and on June 7, 1957 was married to H. Ray Brueseke. She had lived the majority of her life in the Sullivan area with the exception of when Ray was completing his education at the University of Missouri at Columbia and for a short time thereafter in Pacific, Missouri while Ray was teaching in St. Louis County. She was employed at ACE Manufacturing in Sullivan for 17 years. She worked as an accounts payable clerk until recently when ill health caused her retirement. Naomi was a charter member of Faith Assembly of God where she was the pianist and president of the Women’s Ministries. She found pleasure in music and playing the piano which where sources of great spiritual comfort to her. She was known as a servant because she always tended to the needs of others, especially her family. Naomi was also an enormously forgiving individual and refused to hold grudges. She always wore a smile and her outgoing personality was her trademark. In family circles, she was known as a hospitality queen in that she always would open her home and cater to the gatherings of her family. Naomi loved her family. She was not only a wife to her husband but best friend as well. She truly personified Proverbs 31 and will long be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.

Surviving along with her husband, Ray are: one son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Tammy Brueseke of Fenton, Missouri; one daughter, Sherri Webb and her friend Kenny Doza, both of Sullivan; four grandchildren, Kyla, Ryan, Kaelin and Jacob; her mother Wilma Tutterrow of Sullivan; two sisters, Connie Cash and husband Bill of Sullivan and Georgia Garner and husband Ronald of Excelsor Springs, Missouri other relatives and many friends. Her father, George Tutterrow preceded her in death.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 10, 2001 from Faith Assembly of God in Sullivan with Pastor Dan Martin officiating. Interment was in Dutch Hill Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.
