Sharon D. Scott

Sharon D. Scott of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Sunday, July 1, 2001 at the age of 52 years.

Sharon was born January 4, 1949 at St. Louis Missouri to Leo C. Scott and the late Helen M. Kline Scott. She had lived her entire life in the Sullivan and Bourbon areas, having graduated from Sullivan High School in 1967. Sharon was employed as an executive secretary and payroll accountant at Sachs Electric Company until ill health caused her early retirement. She was known for her stamina and will to overcome. Sharon was a fighter who never gave up throughout her various illnesses, which included a kidney transplant and cancerous conditions. Her grandchildren were her life, as were her two children. She also found pleasure in painting and ceramics and especially fishing. She was a member of Sullivan Rebecah Lodge #319 and along with being recently baptized, became a member of God’s eternal family.

She is survived by a son Steve Barch and his friend Sandy of Sullivan, one daughter Shelly Kind and husband Chris of Sullivan, her father and step-mother, Leo and Colleen Scott of Sullivan, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael and Linda Scott and Lonnie and Sheri Scott all of Sullivan, 6 grandchildren, Kyle, Kelly, Klayton, Vivy, Michael and Hanna, two god-daughters, Jasmine and Justina Steinhaur, five nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 5, 2001 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with interment in I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery. Visitation for Sharon Scott will be from 4:30 until 9 p.m. on Tuesday and on Thursday from 9 a.m. until time of service at 11. Please note that there will be no visitation on Wednesday in observance of Independence Day.

Ellis Wason Butts

Ellis Wason Butts of St. James, Missouri, formerly of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away on Saturday, July 7, 2001 at the age of 84 years.

Mr. Butts was born on August 31, 1916 in Cunningham, Mississippi to the late Thomas H. and Dora Ann Derenda (Williams) Butts. As a young boy, he moved to Arkansas, and eventually to St. Clair, Missouri in 1953. On November 2, 1940 Ellis was joined in marriage to Bernice Louise Clark. In 1942 he entered the United States Navy and honorably served his country until 1945. In 1963 his wife, Bernice preceded him in death. In October 1964 Ellis was married to Birddie Jane Palmer in St. Clair. Then in 1970 they moved to the Sullivan area, and later in 1986 to St. James. Birddie also preceded him in death in 1993. Ellis worked for over twenty years as an auto worker for the Ford Motor Company in Hazelwood, Missouri. He was a follower of the Baptist faith, a member of the American Legion in St. Clair, a member of the Sullivan Oddfellow Lodge #156 and a life-time member of the Disabled American Veteran’s. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. Ellis will be remembered and cherished as an extremely patient person who possessed an unforgettable smile. In the words of one of his children, “He was the best man I ever knew.”

He is survived by three sons, Charles H. Butts of St. Clair, Ellis Wayne Butts and wife, Catherine of St. James, and Bobby Gene Butts of St. Clair; one daughter, Thelma Sue Downey and husband, Thomas of St. Charles, Missouri; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10, 2001 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Scott Perry officiating. Interment with full military honors was at Midlawn Memorial Garden in Union, Missouri.

Ceclia A. Clonts

Celia A. Clonts of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Thursday, July 12, 2001 at the age of 85 years.

Mrs. Clonts was born at Sullivan, Missouri on April 30, 1916 to Henry and Lydia (Spindler) Hammer. She was a lifelong resident of Sullivan and on June 18, 1938 was married to Raymond F. Clonts. Five children were born to this union, of which a daughter, Barbara Green preceded her in death. Mrs. Clonts was a long-time employee of the former International Shoe Company in Sullivan and was also employed at the former Mid-West Shoe Company in Sullivan. She was a sewing machine operator whose work was important to her. She also enjoyed baking; especially bread and rolls. Canning and gardening were a specialty also and she provided her family with many delicious meals that will be fondly remembered. Mrs. Clonts was a member of First Assembly of God Church and attended there until ill health caused her to be homebound.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond of the home; four sons and daughters-in-law, James and Joyce Clonts of Potosi, Missouri, Jerry and Carol Clonts of Sullivan, Kenneth and Debbie Clonts of Sullivan and Harold and Anita Clonts of Leasburg, Missouri; one sister Helen Sherman of Sullivan; two step-sisters, 17 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Along with those previously mentioned, Mrs. Clonts was also preceded in death by a brother Hayden Hammer.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 16, 2001 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Jeff Bent officiating. Interment was in Crow Cemetery.

Helen Lemons

Helen G. Lemons of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at the age of 93 years.

Mrs. Lemons was born on October 31, 1907 at Sullivan, Missouri to Albert and Mary Ann (Cain) Claspill. At the age of 15 years she was baptized at Newburg Baptist Church, and later attended First Baptist Church in Sullivan. She later married Curtis Lemons who preceded her in death in 1971. Mrs. Lemons was employed for 36 years at the former International Shoe Company in Sullivan as a floor supervisor. She also worked for a time at the Union and Cuba Shoe Companies. Helen later became employed at the Missouri Baptist Hospital in the Dietary Department. She was active in the Hospital Auxiliary and was a member of Sullivan Rebeccah Lodge #319 as well as the Town and Country Club.

One brother, Robert Claspill and wife, Virginia of Sullivan survive her, as do two nephews, Jim Claspill of the state of Wisconsin and Don Weeks of Florissant, Missouri. Mrs. Lemons was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers in infancy, two sisters, Mabel McKinney and Catherine Bacon, a nephew, Bob Claspill, and a niece, Carol Carter.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 13, 2001 from the Chapel of the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Paul Gray officiating. Interment was in I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Those who desire may make memorial contributions to the Leukemia Society or American Cancer Society.

Thelma Hartlein

Thelma Azzlee Hartlein, daughter of the late Elvis Milburn and Nellie (Burns) Selph, passed away on Monday , July 16, 2001 at Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan, Missouri at the age of 71 years, 10 months and 10 days.

Thelma was born on September 6, 1929 at Dyersburg, Tennessee. She was a long-time resident of the Canalou and Matthews, Missouri areas before ill health occurred 23 years ago. She had been self-employed as a hairdresser for many years. The last five years she has resided at Gibbs Care Center in Steelville, Missouri. Thelma was a member of Matthews Baptist Church.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Glenda Rodgers of Wentzville, Missouri; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bobby Adams of Waialua, Hawaii; one brother, W.J. Selph and wife, Mabel of O’Fallon, Missouri; one sister, Jean Nimmo of Leasburg, Missouri, 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents, Thelma was preceded in death by a son, Billy Gene Rodgers, and one brother, Charles Edward Selph.

Graveside funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 in Sikeston Garden of Memories, Sikeston, Missouri with Pastor Jimmy Vent officiating. Visitation for Mrs. Hartlein was held from 6:30 until 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 17, 2001 from the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Frances Jaycox

Frances E. Jaycox of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Tuesday, July 17, 2001 at the age of 78 years.

Mrs. Jaycox was born on August 9, 1922 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to the late Raymond D. and Mabel (Hargis) Swick. As a young girl, she moved to Covington, Kentucky where she was raised. On June 14, 1952 she was united in marriage to Ted Jaycox in St. Louis, Missouri. Ted and Frances did not move to the Sullivan area until 1994. Frances’ primary work throughout her adult years was that of serving her family as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and homemaker. She enjoyed spending time with her family, and polka dancing when she was younger. Frances was a follower of the Catholic faith, and also a member of the American Legion Post #347 Women’s Auxiliary of St. Clair. She will be remembered and cherished as a woman of strong resolve who, in the words of one of her children, “always meant what she said when she said it.”

She is survived by her husband, Ted Jaycox of Sullivan; four sons, Dale Barbeau and wife, Bern of Oakville, Missouri, Lynn Barbeau and wife, Debbie and Steve Jaycox, all of Cedar Hill, Missouri, and Jim Jaycox of the state of Idaho; two daughters, Patricia Gross of Jacksonville, Florida and Nancy Hahn of Sullivan; thirteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 20, 2001 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with the Reverend Father Theodore Brunnert officiating. Interment was in the National Cemetery at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.

Eugene E. Meyer

Gene Meyer of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Friday, July 20, 2001 at the age of 82 years.

Gene was born on January 8, 1919 at Bay, Missouri to the late Edward and Amanda (Schneider) Meyer. He grew up and attended school at Bay, and from January 14, 1943 to March 14, 1946 honorably served his country in the United States Army having attained the rank of Sergeant. In 1963, Gene moved to Sullivan and on February 14, 1975 he was married to Mary Mayberry at Grace United Methodist Church in Sullivan, where they are both devoted members. Gene loved music and sang in the church choir for over 36 years. Mr. Meyer owned and operated Williams and Meyer Insurance Agency from 1963 until 1997. He was a member of the Sullivan Country Club, Russell Schmidt VFW Post #3987, and past president of Sullivan Rotary Club. He also enjoyed sports and especially loved golf.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Meyer of Sullivan; one daughter, Suzette J. Rogers and husband, Carl of Branson, Missouri; two stepsons, Reverend Dr. Keith Heifner and wife, Becky of Parma, Michigan and James Heifner and wife, Marcia of Farmington, New Mexico; two sisters, Eunice Dannaldson of Kansas City, Missouri and Gladys Price of Jefferson City, Missouri; four grandchildren, Nickolas and Shaun Gauer of Sullivan, Justin Gauer of Branson, and Todd Heifner of Naples, Florida; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Along with his parents, Mr. Meyer was preceded in death by his son, William Meyer, and two brothers, Clarence and Lawrence Meyer.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 23, 2001 from the Grace United Methodist Church in Sullivan with Rev. Dr. Keith Heifner and Rev. Dr. Bart Hildreth officiating. Interment was in the I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery. If desired, contributions may be given to the Grace United Methodist Church of Sullivan in memory of Gene Meyer.

Earl D. Bell

Earl D. Bell of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Saturday, July 21, 2001 at the age of 85 years.

Mr. Bell was born on July 6, 1916 in Sullivan to the late Charles and Flora (Bailey) Bell. After being raised in Sullivan, he remained a lifelong resident of the Sullivan area. On August 5, 1933 Earl was united in marriage to Minnie Nethington in Steelville, Missouri. They spent most of their time together in Sullivan, but also lived in Arnold, Missouri for a period of 18 years. After 45 years of marriage, Minnie preceded Earl in death on October 4, 1978. Earl worked for over 30 years as a machinist for the McDonnell-Douglas Corporation, and retired from there in 1972. On September 6, 1980 he married Alice (Lantz) Bell in Sullivan. Earl was a member of the First Assembly of God in Sullivan, and also a member of the Sullivan Oddfellow Lodge #156. He enjoyed tinkering with antique cars, building purple martin birdhouses, and fixing just about anything. Earl will be remembered and cherished as an extremely tenderhearted and generous man who cared about others.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Bell of Sullivan; one son, Eddie Bell and wife, Shirley of Sullivan; one stepson, Wayne Bell of Birch Tree, Missouri; one stepdaughter, Mariea Johanning and husband, Ray of Bourbon, Missouri; five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Earl was also preceded in death by one son, Bob Bell, two brothers, Benton and Marvin Bell, and three sisters, Deveda Lockhart, Nova Dorson, and Irene Benson.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 24, 2001 from the First Assembly of God in Sullivan with Pastor Gary Oglesby officiating. Interment was in the I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery. If desired, contributions may be given to the First Assembly of God in memory of Earl D. Bell. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Catherine Schroeder

Catherine Schroeder of Bourbon, Missouri, daughter of the late Leopold and Anna Wehn Schroeder passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2001 at the age of 87 years.

Mrs. Schroeder was born at St. Louis, Missouri on May 11, 1914. She had made her home both in the St. Louis and Bourbon areas. She was a long-time employee of the City of St. Louis as a supervisor for the street department. After her employment of over 20 years, she retired and to the Bourbon area. While in St. Louis, she found great pleasure in walking and was a member of the Missouri Walk- Away Club. Mrs. Schroeder was also a member of Saint Francis Parish of Bourbon.

She is survived by a son, Marvin Schroeder of Bourbon, one daughter and son-in-law Joan and Jim Birmingham of Volcano, California, four sisters, Rose Bidner of St. Peters, Missouri, Marie Davis and Marge Killian both of Bourbon, and Pauline Harris of Sullivan, 9 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Mrs. Schroeder was preceded I death by two sisters, Helen Merkel and Frances Voss.

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 26, 2001 from Saint Francis Catholic Church in Bourbon with the Rev. Father Robert Duesdieker officiating. Interment was in Hill Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Chapel, Bourbon, Missouri.
