Harriette H. Woods

Harriette H. Woods of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Saturday, May 5, 2001 at the age of 82 years.

Mrs. Woods was born May 21, 1918 at Granite City, Illinois to the late Roy and Grace (Baker) Harmon. As a young girl, her family moved to the Sullivan area where Harriette remained for the majority of her life. On October 12, 1933 she was married to Everett J. Woods at Steelville, Missouri. Everett preceded her in death on June 4, 1986. Harriette was a homemaker the greater part of her life, however for about 10 years, she was a clerk at the former Ben Franklin Variety Store in Sullivan. She loved ceramics, doll collecting, doing embroidery work, and collecting plates. Harriette also found pleasure in flower gardening. At an early age she was Baptized into the Methodist faith and for a time was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Sullivan.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Betty Woods of Sullivan, three daughters and sons-in-law, Helen and Selden Ruwwe, Bonnie and Jack Medling all of Sullivan and Donna and Larry Rutledge of Union, Missouri, 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, one niece, Beverly Whitaker of the state of California, one aunt, Clarice Mesger, other relatives and friends. Along with her husband, Harriette was preceded in death by two daughters, Carolyn and Linda Woods, one brother, Donald Larkin and one sister, Helen Redman.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday from the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan with interment in I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Visitation for Mrs. Harriette Woods will be from 4:30 until 9:00 p.m. Monday evening at Hassebroek’s Funeral Home. Those who desire may make memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.

Louis "Bud" Gaskill

Louis E. “Bud” Gaskill of Sullivan, passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2001 at the age of 74 years.

Bud was born March 31, 1927 to the late Louis G. and Katherine C. (Marren) Gaskill at St. Louis, Missouri. He was Baptized into the Catholic Faith on April 17, 1927 at the Church of the Epiphany of Our Lord in St. Louis, Missouri. The family moved to Sullivan in 1935 where Bud has been a life long resident. He honorably served his country in the United States Army and received the Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal – Germany. On April 3, 1948 he was married to June Rose Moss at Saint Anthony Rectory in Sullivan. Bud was a life long member of Saint Anthony Catholic Church and was employed as a driver for the former Juergens Oil Company and later for the former Ramsey Corporation and Paco - Echlien as a foreman, instructor, and supervisor. He retired from Echlien in 1989. Bud enjoyed spending time with June, his “best friend” and wife of 53 years, also with his grandchildren and great grandchild, “Little Lexi”, and his golden retriever, “Teddy”. He was known for his garden of strawberries and tomatoes, working in his yard, and spending time with his family and friends. He also found great pleasure in Bar-B-Queing and cooking.

He is survived by his wife, June (Moss) Gaskill of Sullivan, one son, Dennis Gaskill and wife, Sandy, of Sullivan, two daughters, Patricia Strothcamp and husband, David, Kathleen McCulloch and husband, John, all of Sullivan, one brother, Warren Gaskill and wife, Mary, one sister, Catherine “Peggy” Gaskill, a sister-in-law, Anita Jones and husband, Paul, one brother-in-law, Walter Smith, all of Sullivan, five grandchildren, Erin and Daniel Strothcamp, David and Lindsey McCulloch and Cassie Gaskill, all of Sullivan, one great-grandchild, Alexis Rose McCulloch of Sullivan, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Along with his parents, Mr. Gaskill was preceded in death by his parents in law, Dan and Rose Moss, and two sisters, Marion Nolan and Lucille Smith.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 5, 2001 from Saint Anthony Catholic Church in Sullivan with Rev. Father Ted Brunnert officiating. Interment was in Saint Anthony Parish Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given for Masses or to Saint Anthony Building Fund in memory of Bud Gaskill. Arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Seline Britton

Seline J. Britton of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at the age of 65 years.

Mrs. Britton was born October 14, 1935 in the Huzzah area near Davisville. She was one of seven children born to the late Esco and Laura (Medley) Coplin. On September 18, 1953 she was married to Junior A. Britton at Huzzah and to this marriage seven children were born of which a daughter, Patty Mastin preceded her in death. Seline enjoyed the outdoors and found pleasure in hunting and fishing. She also was an avid camper and gardener. In 1999 Seline retired from Meramec Industries as a trimmer after a total 30 years of employment.

She is survived by her husband, Junior Britton of the home, four sons, David Britton and wife Rhonda of Stanton, Missouri, Dennis and wife Robin of Sullivan, Scott and wife Sue of Sullivan and Larry and wife Katie of Stanton, two daughters, Elsie Brake and husband Ronald of Bourbon and Teresa Boisseau of Olmstead, Kentucky, two brothers, Billy Coplin of Sullivan and Douglas Coplin of Bourbon, four sisters, Geneva Pyatt of Bourbon, Bonnie Hollingshead of Sullvian, Connie Mercer of Sullivan, and Shirley Meyers of Booneville, Missouri, 13 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 3, 2001 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Scott Perry officiating. Interment was in Cave Spring Cemetery.

Maurice E. Hardecke

Maurice E. Hardecke of Sullivan, passed away Saturday at the age of 66 years.

He is survived by his wife Martha nee Keogh of the home, one son John Hardecke and wife Soojin Kang of Fenton, Missouri, one daughter, Miriam Mastin and husband Michael of Sullivan, one granddaughter, Malaina Ann Mastin, one step-son, Nick Miller and wife Patricia of Sullivan, four step-daughters, Olive Breece and husband Steve of Tullahoma, Tennessee, Debbie Miller of Sullivan, Kristi Naugle and husband Leonard of Columbia, Missouri and Loria Nagle and husband John of Sullivan, six step-grandchildren, Jennifer Breece-Brown, Stephanie Breece, Billy Miller, Drew and Amber Naugle and John Nagle III, one brother, Ralph Hardecke and wife Joyce of Sullivan, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Tuesday from St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Sullivan with interment in Schmidt Cemetery. Visitation for Mr. Maurice Hardecke will be from 4:30 until 9 p.m. Monday from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan and on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until of service at the church. Those who desire may make memorials contributions to the American Heart Association.

Elizabeth M. Griffith

Elizabeth M. Griffith of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, May 16, 2001 at the age of 86 years.

She is survived by four sons, Carl Griffith and wife, Garra of House Springs, Missouri, Jerry Griffith and wife, Josie of the state of Hawaii, Curtis Griffith and wife, Shiao Jing of Lebanon, Illinois, and James Griffith and wife, Etsuko of House Springs; two daughters, Joyce Bandy and husband, Roy of Sullivan, and Nancy LaValle and husband, Tony of Moore, Oklahoma; one brother, Jim Miller of Casper, Wyoming; one sister, Virginia “Babe” Pennell of New Braunfels, Texas; eighteen grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2001 from the Reedville Baptist Church in Sullivan with interment in the Reedville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:30 until 9:00 p.m. on Friday, May 18, 2001 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Mary Dorothy Emory

Mary Dorothy Emory of Sullivan, Missouri formerly of St. Louis, passed away Thursday, May 24, 2001 at the age of 80 years.

Mrs. Emory was born August 24, 1920 at St. Louis, Missouri to the late John and Rose (Adams) Tozer. She lived in St. Louis until coming to the Sullivan area four years ago. On Jun 2, 1940 she was married to Chester Emory and to this marriage one son was born. Mrs. Emory was a bookkeeper for American Investment Company many years and later retired from there. She enjoyed flowers and plants and also found pleasure in reading. Mrs. Emory was a member of Saint Anthony Parish in Sullivan.

She is survived by a son Roger Scott Emory of Sullivan, a sister and brother-in-law Rosemary and Donald Weidenhaft of Sullivan, a niece Mary Weidenhaft of Sullivan and a nephew, Mark Wedenhaft, cousins, William Seal of Leasburg, Missouri and Robert Seal of Ballwin, Missouri other relatives and friends. Mrs. Emory was preceded in death by her husband Chester in December of 1997.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. from St. Anthony Catholic Church in Sullivan with interment in Calvary Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri. Visitation for Mrs. Mary Emory will be held from 4:30 until 8 p.m. Monday from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan. In lieu of flowers, masses or memorials to the charity of your choice are preferred.

Carl E. English

Carl E. English of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at the age of 86 years.

Mr. English was born on December 13, 1914 in Broughton, Illinois to the late Orville and Mary (Ford) English. After being raised in Broughton and running the family farm due to his father’s ill health, he entered the United States Army in 1941. He honorably served his country for over four years during World War II in the East Indies, Papuan, and New Guinea campaigns. Carl worked throughout his adult years for feed mills and plastics manufacturing companies. On April 6, 1968 he was united in marriage to Lucille M. Evans in Clayton, Missouri. Carl enjoyed tinkering with cars and lawnmowers, working on puzzles, and going for short drives. As a young man, he became a follower of the Methodist faith.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille English of Sullivan; one stepdaughter, Sandra Smith of Nevada, Missouri; one sister, Ruth Cantrell of Decatur, Illinois; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to his parents, Mr. English was preceded in death by two stepsons, Phillip and Stephen Ives, and two brothers, Earl and Ralph English.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 1, 2001 from the Chapel of the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan with Dr. Bart Hildreth officiating. Interment was in the Steelville Cemetery with full military honors. If desired, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association in memory of Carl E. English.

Herschel R. Williams

Herschell R. Williams of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at the age of 74 years.

Mr. Williams was born to the late George Oliver and Ada May (Thompson) Williams at Jadwin, Missouri. He was raised in various parts of Illinois and in his later teens moved to the Sullivan area. Mr. Williams honorably served his country during W.W.II with the U.S. Army and saw action in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He achieved the rank of Master Sergeant and was discharged in September of 1946. On March 4, 1950 he was married to Ella Maxine Crow at Ft. Smith, Arkansas. He was a long-time employee of the former Ramsey Corporation in Sullivan as a machine operator. He enjoyed working with his hands and was known to many as a hard working man. He loved his Lord and was a member of Sullivan Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife Ella Maxine of the home, one son Ronald Williams and wife Robin, three daughters, Carol Simmons and husband Dan, Georgia Williams and Donna Westrick and husband George, one brother, Melvin Williams and one sister, Ruby Witt all of Sullivan, 10 grandchildren, Caren Cain and husband Rick, Jeff Simmons, Bobby Williams, Lori Rudisill and husband Jarrett, Jenny Williams, Jeremy Williams and wife Evelena, Charlie Bridgeman, Courtney Williams, Chris Westrick and Tina Waller and husband Jerry, four great-grandchildren, Shad Cain, Kamryn Simmons, Madison Rudisill and Drake Woods, one great-great-grandchild, Makoy Cain, other relatives and friends. Along with his parents, Mr. Williams was preceded in death by a daughter, Robin Lee Williams and his parents-in-law William and Daisy Crow.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 1, 2001 from the Sullivan Christian Church with the Rev. Jeff Bent officiating. Interment was in I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery. Those who desire may make memorial contributions to the Sullivan Christian Church Building Fund. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Leo J. Frost

Leo J. Frost of Bourbon, Missouri passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at the age of 83 years.

Mr. Frost was born February 19, 1918 at Overland, Missouri to John and Martha (Valinski) Frost. He was raised in Overland and graduated from Ritenour High School. On May 22, 1949 he was married to Mabel Berry at St. Louis. Mr. Frost was a machinist for many years with the Emerson Electric Company. After his retirement from there, he moved to Bourbon, Missouri where he has lived the past 21 years. He found great pleasure in the game of golf and was a member of the men’s league at Cuba Golf Course.

He is survived by his wife Mabel of the home, one son, James P. Frost and wife Florence of Bourbon, two grandsons, James and wife Kimberly, and Jeffery and wife Jane, three great-grandchildren, Stephanie, James P. III, and Daniel Frost, three sisters, Leona Zernicke of Overland, Missouri, Dorothy Del Fosse and Virginia Del Fosse both of Arnold, Missouri, other relatives and friends. Along with his parents, Mr. Frost was preceded in death by six brothers, John, Leonard, Barney, Billy, Tommy and George Frost and one sister, Marie.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 31, 2001 from the Eaton Funeral Chapel in Bourbon with the Rev. Jeff Bent officiating. Interment was in the Bourbon Cemetery.

Howard Eugene (Gene) Michell

Howard Eugene (Gene) Michell of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Friday, June 01, 2001 at the age of 71 years.

Gene, as he was known by his family and friends, was born June 10, 1930 at St. Louis, Missouri to the late Albert Edward and Hansina (Johnson) Michell. He honorably served his country with the U.S. Coast Guard aboard the Cutter Absecon and was stationed at Norfolk, Virginia. Gene was married to Virginia Johler in 1952 at St. Louis and to this marriage three children were born. He later married Lena Mae (Baker) Copeland and made their home in Sullivan. He was a valued member of Sullivan Lodge #69 A.F.&A.M.;

He is survived by his wife Lena Mae of the home, one son Gene Michell of Wentzville, Missouri, two daughters, Vicky Burgard of Mr. Olive, Illinois and Peggy Ebert of Warrenton, Missouri, three step-sons, Michael Copeland of Springfield, Missouri, Stephen Copeland of St. Robert, Missouri and James Copeland of Maryland Heights, Missouri, one step-daughter, Patti Rolufs of Bland, Missouri, 12 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. Sunday evening from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 4, 2001 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with interment in Ozark Memorial Garden, Rolla, Missouri. Masonic services will be conducted at 5:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home under the care of Sullivan Lodge #69 A.F. & A.M.
