Elsie Farmer Dawson

Elise Farmer Dawson of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Monday, November 13, 2000 at the age of 60 years.

Elsie was born September 5, 1940 in San Antonio, Texas to the late John and Rosalie (Cox) Olson. She had lived her early life in Cabool, Missouri where she graduated High School. In 1957, she was married to William Hicks and to this marriage two daughters where born. Elsie had made her home in various parts of the country which included Florida, California, Indianapolis, Indiana, Missouri and Omaha, Nebraska. She also lived for a time in Australia. Later in life, she was married to Donald Farmer and after a divorce was married to James Dawson who preceded her in death after nine months of marriage. After coming to Sullivan three years ago, Elsie was employed for a time at Meramec Nursing Center as an Activities Assistant. She enjoyed crafts and “pretty, lacey things”. Elsie’s craft work included making holiday wreaths and pillows. Elsie was a member in the Baptist faith.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Joy and Harry Rush of Sullivan and Pam and Michael Irwin of Baltimore, Maryland, on brother, John Olson, Jr. of Kansas City, Missouri and one sister, Anna Marie Fortner also of Kansas City, Missouri, six grandchildren, Anthony, Danielle and Lacy Rush, William Ray, Holly and Sean Irwin, other relatives and friends. Elsie was also preceded in death by one sister, Eunice Culver.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Thursday, November 16, 2000 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Scott Perry officiating. Interment was in Washington Park North Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana.

Estelle R. Thompson

Estelle R. Thompson, formerly of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on Saturday, November 11, 2000 at the age of 90 years. She was born to the late Edward and Maude Moeller in St. Louis, Missouri on February 11, 1910. Mrs. Thompson married George L. Thompson, the one love of her life, on September 1, 1928 in Clayton, Missouri. During the course of their marriage, they made their home in various parts of the country which included St. Louis, El Paso, Texas, Poplar Bluff and Russellville, Missouri, followed by 25 years in Menasha, Wisconsin, and for over 30 years in Sullivan. In 1998 she moved to Oklahoma City to be near her son, Jim. Mrs. Thompson was very active it the Order of Eastern Star throughout her adult life. She held many offices and service awards from her beloved “STAR”.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Marion Thompson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Thomas and Arlene Thompson of Camarillo, California, one daughter and son-in-law, Bessie and Bruce Hutchins of San Jose, California, one brother and sister-in-law, Wilber and and Mildred Moeller of Overland, Missouri, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services will be conducted 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 18, 2000 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri with the Rev. Dale Jackson of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment was in Oddfellows Memorial Cemetery. Visitation for Mrs. Thompson will be held from 7 until 9 p.m. Friday with Order of Eastern Star services at 7:30 p.m.. Those who desire may make memorials to the First Presbyterian Church of Sullivan.

“Mother is now at peace, she will rest as she desired alongside her beloved husband. May she and Dad sleep well.”

Thelma Haug

Thelma E. Haug of Cuba, Missouri, formerly of Bonne Terre, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2000 at the age of 92 years.

Mrs. Haug was born on November 4, 1908 in Bourbon, Missouri to the late Roy and Alice (Campbell) Harrison, and was raised in the Bourbon area. Before marriage Thelma taught school for twelve years in the Bourbon and St. Louis areas. On July 16, 1938 she was joined in marriage to Edward Joseph Haug, Sr. in Bonne Terre, Missouri, and to this union three children were born. Throughout her adult life, Mrs. Haug served her family as a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. She enjoyed playing bridge, going on family picnics, and singing in the church choir. She was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church of Bonne Terre. On February 12, 1996 her husband, Edward, preceded her in death. Thelma will always be cherished and remembered as an extremely dedicated and caring woman.

She is survived by two sons, Edward Haug, Jr. and wife, Carol, of Bayfield, Colorado and James Haug and wife, Lourdes, of Plantation, Florida; one daughter, Yolande Michaels of Topanga, California; two brothers, James Harrison and wife, Ruthene, of Bourbon and George Harrison and wife, Velva, of Kirkwood, Missouri; two sisters, Elinor Brenton of Cuba and Fern Hirzy and husband, Tony, of Bourbon; three grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Thelma was preceded in death by two brothers, Clark and Edwin Harrison, and one sister, Alice Harrison.

Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, November 25, 2000 at 12:00 p.m. from the Eaton Chapel in Bourbon with Reverend Sally Ketterer officiating. Interment was in Bourbon Cemetery. If desired, memorials may be made to the First Congregational Church of Bonne Terre Organ Fund or to the American Cancer Society in memory of Mrs. Thelma E. Haug.

Max L. Hamby

Max L. Hamby of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Wednesday, November 15, 2000 at the age of 77 years.

Mr. Hamby was born February 13, 1923 at Sullivan, Missouri to the late Wesley and Ruth (Cain) Hamby. He attended school in Sullivan until the 10th grade when he inlisted into the U.S. Army. He honorably served his country during W.W.II and fought in the European and African Theatres. He saw battle in Central Europe, Rhineland, the Ardennes, Normandy and Northern Europe and was awarded 5 Bronze Stars for these campaigns. On February 26, 1946 he was married to Virginia R. Doyle at St. Louis and to this marriage a daughter was born. Max was employed at Emerson Electric Company in St. Louis as a lead Millwright and retired from there after 37 years. He will long be remembered as a man who enjoyed a good laugh and had a great sense of humor. Mr. Hamby was a member of Russell Schmidt V.F.W. Post #3987 of Sullivan, Fraternal Order of Eagles Arie #3781, the American Legion and AmVets.

A daughter, Carol McClary of Sullivan, three grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends survive him.

Funeral services will be conducted 10:00 a.m. Monday from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan, with interment in I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery. Visitation for Mr. Max Hamby will be from 6:30 until 9:00 p.m. Sunday with VFW Memorial Services to be held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Wiley James Combs

Wiley James Combs of Cuba, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, November 15, 2000 at the age of 82 years.

Mr. Combs was born August 30, 1918 to the late George and Maude Combs and was a long time resident of the Sullivan area. On April 5, 1941 he was married to Anna Jane Riggs at Trenton, Missouri at to this marriage nine children were born. Mr. Combs was employed as an in-line inspector with General Motors for many years and retired from there in 1980. He found pleasure in the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by five sons: George Combs of Sullivan, David of Cuba, Missouri, Jim of Cathedral City, California, Randy of Liberty, Missouri and Warren of Cuba, four daughters, Pat Camden of O’Fallon, Missouri, Wanda Combs of Maryville, Missouri, Anna Mae Barrett of the State of Utah and Betty Jane Sampson of Sullivan, one sister, Edna Mae Elliott of Kalama, Washington, 26 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Three brothers, Ferman Hardy, Riley and Jack Combs preceded him in death.

Funeral services 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 19, 2000 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with interment in Cave Spring Cemetery. Visitation for Mr. Wiley Combs will be from 12 noon Sunday until time of service at 2 p.m. at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Margaret Jones

Margaret A. Jones of Bourbon, Missouri passed away on Thursday, November 23, 2000 at the age of 76 years, 6 months and 9 days.

Margaret was born on May 16, 1924 at Bourbon, Missouri to the late William and Jessie (Douglas) Miller. She made her home in Bourbon and later graduated from high school there. Margaret’s primary vocation throughout her adult life was that of a waitress. She was employed by various restaurants and cafes throughout the Bourbon area. She found pleasure in reading and quilting. Margaret was a caring person who would always lend a helping hand when needed by others. She professed her faith in Jesus Christ and attended the First Baptist Church of Bourbon.

She is survived by one son, Gregory Ross of Nashville, Tennessee; one brother, James Miller of the state of Wyoming; two sisters, Elizabeth Griffith of the state of Oklahoma and Virginia Pinnell of the state of Texas; special nieces, Wanda Starbeck, Barbara Pinnell and Sue Todd all of Bourbon; other relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by six brothers, Roy, William, Ray, Leslie, Eugene and Lawrence Miller, and four sisters, Grace Roberson, Mildred Pennock, June Moutray, and Ethel Schlafer.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 27, 2000 from the Eaton Funeral Chapel in Bourbon with Pastor Devin Haus officiating. Interment was in Bourbon Cemetery. Visitation for Mrs. Margaret Jones was held from 3:30 until 9 p.m. on Sunday evening at the Eaton Funeral Chapel in Bourbon.

Corinne R. Bandy

Corinne R. Bandy of Leslie, Missouri passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2000 at the age of 95 years.

Corinne was born on April 3, 1905 to the late William Andrew and Sophia Emmiline (Goyer) Reed near Bourbon, Missouri. She was raised and attended school in the Bourbon area, and in August 1930 was married to William Joseph Jones. Mr. Jones preceded Corinne in death on August 8, 1955 after 25 years of marriage. In August of 1959 Corinne was married to John C. Bandy, who also preceded her in death in 1967. Mrs. Bandy was a very active member of the Sullivan and Leslie communities, and found pleasure in participating in lodge work. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star #105 of Sullivan, past Noble Grand of Rebekah Lodge Sullivan Chapter #319, member of the Spring Bluff Unique Club, and a faithful member of the United Methodist Church of Leslie. Corinne wrote two columns for the Sullivan Independent News: “Random Thoughts” and “Echoes from Evergreen.” She was employed by several area businesses, including the former Carps Department Shore and Meramec Caverns. Corinne enjoyed quilting with the Rebekah’s in addition to her many other activities. The joy of her life, however, came from the family she loved so dearly. She will be lovingly remembered as a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.

She is survived by one son, Paul H. Jones and wife, Joan, of Benton, Kentucky; one daughter, Jackie Donner and husband, Ronald, of Northfield, Minnesota; four stepsons, George Bandy, Clinton Bandy and wife, Carol, and Joe Bandy and wife, Beverly, all of Leslie, Missouri, and Ralph Bandy and wife, Julia, of Union, Missouri; two stepdaughters, Helen Gumpenberger and Hazel Joers and husband, Ray, all of Gerald, Missouri; thirteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Along with those previously mentioned, Mrs. Bandy was preceded in death by three brothers, Alvie, Arthur, and Don Reed, and two sisters, Lucinda Reed and Celesta George.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 28, 2000 from the Chapel of the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan with Rev. Leonard Krudop officiating. Interment was in the I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery. If desired, contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of Leslie Building Fund c/o Pastor Leonard Krudop in memory of Corinne R. Bandy.

Lola Palmer

Lola J. Palmer of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Thursday, November 23, 2000 at the age of 69 years.

Mrs. Palmer was born on June 7, 1931 at Canaan, Missouri to the late Samuel and Lizzie (Pasch) Roberson. Mrs. Palmer was raised in the Canaan area and attended school there until the 8th grade. On April 26, 1947 she was married to Otto F. Palmer at Sullivan, and to this union six children were born. After living in various parts of the country, Lola and her family settled in Sullivan over 30 years ago. She was a compassionate, gracious, and spiritual woman, who was constantly concerned about the welfare of others. Lola was a follower of the Pentecostal faith. She found pleasure in flowers, working puzzles, traveling, and watching her “soaps.” Her greatest joy, however, came from her many grandchildren, to whom she was especially endeared.

She is survived by her husband, Otto, of Sullivan; two sons, Dale Palmer of Stanton, Missouri and Bill Palmer of Sullivan; three daughters, Patricia Hoehne of Bourbon, Missouri, Rebecca Zeugin of Steelville, Missouri and Naomi Larue of Sullivan; 17 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, other relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents, Lola was preceded in death by one son, Riley Palmer; seven brothers, Raymond, David, Clyde, Donald, Milford, Stanley and Jack Roberson; and six sisters, Duella, Marie, Naomi, Bessie, and a set of twins in infancy.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 26, 2000 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Harold Harrison officiating. Interment was in Crow Cemetery.

Helen H. Brown

Helen H. Brown of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on December 6, 2000 at the age of 87 years.

She is survived by one son, Kermit Brown of Sullivan; one daughter, Carol Hoefgen of Eureka, Missouri; four grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 8, 2000 from Temple Baptist Church in Sullivan with interment in I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 7, 2000 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan and from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 8, 2000 at the Temple Baptist Church in Sullivan. If desired, contributions may be made to the Temple Baptist Church in memory of Helen H. Brown.
