KIRCHHOFF
Lewis K. Kirchhoff, 63, California, died May 4, 2001, at Capital Region Medical Center.
He was born May 24, 1937, in Moniteau County, a son of Herman and Pearl Hackney Kirchhoff. He was married May 31, 1957, in California, to Virginia Howard, who survives at the home.
He was a self employed dozer operator and later worked for the Missouri Department of Conservation as a dozer operator until retirement in 1992. He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, east of California. He attended California High School and served in the Army from 1957 to 1959.
Other survivors include: two sons, John Kirchhoff and Jim Kirchhoff, both of California; one daughter, Kathy Gerlach, California; one brother, Harold "Dick" Kirchhoff, Centertown; three sisters, Mary Ann Hickman, Mesa, Ariz., Pat Phillips, California, and Jerene Huff, Tipton; six grandchildren and one step granddaughter.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at California United Church of Christ. The Rev. Gary Schulte will officiate. Burial will be in Salem United Church of Christ Cemetery, east of California.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at California United Church of Christ.

NICHOLS
Owen C. Nichols, 81, Appleton City, died May 4, 2001, at Ellett Memorial Hospital, Appleton City.
He was born Nov. 11, 1919, in Ashland, a son of Owen C. and Millie Pauley Nichols. He was married Feb. 22, 1948, to Maurine Walker, who died Feb. 23, 1992.
He was a member of the Pape Christian Church, Pape. He attended Ashland High School and was an Army veteran of World War II.
He lived most of his life in Columbia until he moved to Ashland in 1994. He worked for Paul Watkins Roofing Company, Columbia, until his retirement.
Survivors include: one son, Michael C. Nichols, Columbia; one daughter, Marilyn Miller, Appleton City; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Robinson Funeral Home, Ashland. Elder Wallace Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Columbia.
Visitation will be from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Monday.

SOMMERER
Ryan Christopher "Juice" Sommerer, 24, Jefferson City, died May 4, 2001, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born Jan. 27, 1977, in Jefferson City, a son of George J. and Patricia A. Veltrop Sommerer. His parents survive in Jefferson City.
He was a 1995 graduate of Cole R-5 High School, Eugene. He attended Missouri Valley College, Marshall, on a basketball scholarship. He was named to the dean's list and graduated in 1999 with a criminal justice degree.
He worked for Trinklein Green Houses, Loesch Farms, Midwest Block and Brick and was presently working at Scruggs Lumber Company. He was an assistant basketball coach at Cole R-5 High School, Eugene. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Honey Creek.
Other survivors include: one brother, Jason M. Sommerer, of the home; one sister, Jayme M. Sommerer, of the home; paternal grandparents, Oscar and Marie Sommerer, Jefferson City; and maternal grandfather, George Veltrop, Holts Summit.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Honey Creek. The Rev. Russ Bowder will officiate. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors.
Memorials are suggested to the Immanuel Lutheran School or the Immanuel Lutheran Church.
VACHE
James M. Vache, 80, Jefferson City, died May 4, 2001, at Capital Region Medical Center.
He was born April 13, 1921, in Bonnots Mill, a son of Eldon R. and Hattie Wilson Vache. He was married May 26, 1939, in St. Charles, to Hazel F. Surface, who died Aug. 14, 1996.
A lifelong resident of the Jefferson City area, he attended Jefferson City public schools.
He was trucking dispatcher for Delong's Steel Company for 32 years until his retirement in 1984.
He was a member of First Assembly of God and Teamsters Local 833.
He was manager of the Jefferson City Red Birds and the Ban Johnson baseball teams for many years.
Survivors include two sons, James H. Vache, Jefferson City, and Larry E. Vache, Russellville, and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Robert J. Vache, who died Sept. 9, 1965, and Donnie L. Vache, who died Dec. 8, 1998; one daughter, Darlene Reynolds, who died Jan. 28, 1987; and one grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Freeman Mortuary. The Rev. Lowell Perkins will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today.
Memorials are suggested to the Samaritan Center.
COOPER
Mary Ruth Cooper, 65, Centertown, died May 5, 2001, at St. Marys Health Center.
She was born Nov. 7, 1935, in Nettleton, Miss., a daughter of Loanzo and Lena Nanney Cooper.
She attended Itawomba High School, Fulton, Miss.
A homemaker, she was employed with the Warwick Television Manufacturing Company, Zion, Ill., for 10 years and with the Cherry Electric Company, Waukegan, Ill., for 15 years.
Survivors include: two daughters, Cathy Turman Imsland, Centertown, and Dale Robinson Ryder, Chino Valley, Ariz.; two brothers, James Ray "Cotton" Cooper and Paul Cooper, both of Mooreville, Miss.; three sisters, Fannie Turman, Mooreville, Bobby Holloway, Waukegan, and Janet Scrivner, Salton Sea Beach, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
One daughter, Dawn Robinson Blank, preceded her in death.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Freeman Mortuary. Burial will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimers Disease and Related Disorders Association.
BACON
Services were today for George M. Bacon, 86, Cherokee, Iowa, formerly of Linn, who died May 4, 2001, at Cherokee Villa.
He was born Dec. 4, 1914, in Linn, a son of George and Jennie LeFevre Bacon.
A 1933 graduate of Belle High School, he was a lineman with the Rural Electric Cooperative in Cherokee for 30 years, retiring in 1979.
He was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church and a member and past master of Speculative Lodge 307 A.F. & A.M., both in Cherokee. He held a master instructor's certificate and a district lecturer's certificate in the Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include two sisters, Mae Leach and Grace Ferrier, both of Bland, and one brother, Ellis Bacon, Bland.
Services were at Memorial Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Ray Kruger officiated. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Linn Memorial Park Cemetery, Linn.
Arrangements are under the direction of Boothby Funeral Home, Cherokee.
POSING
Daniel M. Posing, 47, Indianapolis, formerly of Gravois Mills, died May 1, 2001, in Gravois Mills.
He was born Oct. 21, 1953, in Kankakee, Ill., a son of Howard and Dorothy Regnier Posing. His mother survives in Kankakee.
He was an Army veteran. He was employed as a security guard at a veterans home.
Other survivors include: one daughter, Carrie Posing, Mifflin, Pa.; one brother, Michael Posing; and one sister, Debra DeKalk.
The remains were cremated.
Arrangements were under the direction of Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Versailles.
STEFFEN
Alice Lucille Steffen, 77, Chamois, died May 6, 2001, at St. Marys Health Center.
She was born Dec. 19, 1923, in Chamois, a daughter of Stanley and Eda Augusta Stephan Blackburn. She was married March 31, 1951, in Jefferson City, to Howard Steffen, who died June 22, 1999.
She attended Mt. Pleasant School. She worked at Oberman Pants Factory and was a self-employed store owner in Chamois for many years.
She was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, the Women's Fellowship and the American Legion Auxiliary, all in Chamois.
Survivors include: three sons, Robert Maxwell, Chamois, Dennis Maxwell, Mexico, and David Steffen, Jefferson City; two daughters, Lola Helming, Jefferson City, and Bonnie Hackmann, Linn; two sisters, Delpha Groves and Nelda Maassen, both of Mexico; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
One grandson preceded her in death.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John United Church of Christ. The Rev. Deborah Pope will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Meyer-Hilke-Millard Funeral Home, Chamois.
Memorials are suggested to St. John United Church of Christ or the American Heart Association.
VOLKART
Max Allen Volkart, 25, Columbia, formerly of Jefferson City, died May 4, 2001, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born May 27, 1975, in Jefferson City, a son of Truman and Judy Volkart. His father and stepmother, Truman and Deborah Volkart, survive in Tipton. His mother and stepfather, Judy and Edwin Ehrhardt, survive in Jefferson City.
He attended Tipton High School and was a 1993 graduate of Cole R-5 High School, Eugene. He was a 1994 graduate of Linn State Technical College. He worked as a diesel mechanic at Columbia Freightliner, Columbia, and was a race car mechanic and sponsor.
He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Honey Creek.
Other survivors include: one brother, Harold T. Volkart Jr., Tipton; one half sister, MaDonna Duncan, Jefferson City; two stepsisters, LuShawna Martens, San Diego, and Lynnea Hufendiek, California; and maternal grandfather, William F. Miller, Jamestown.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, California. The Rev. Greg Morrow will officiate. Burial will be in Flag Spring Cemetery, near California.
Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Tuesday at Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Home, California.
