BACKER
Marjorie (Marge) K. Backer, age 80, of Fulton, died Friday, December 19, 2003 at the Boone Hospital Center in Columbia, MO.
She was born May 20, 1923, in Palmyra, MO, the daughter of the late William D. and Minnie (Richards) Keller. On Dec. 25, 1943, near New Bloomfield, she married William "Bill" Backer. He survives of the home.
She is survived by one son, Dale Backer of Fulton; two daughters, Vicki McDaniel of Fulton and Carolyn Cave of Hadley, Mass. ; four grandchildren, Sara Backer, Laura Backer, Melissa McDaniel and John McDaniel; and one brother, Maurice Keller of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA.
Marge was a William Woods graduate. She worked as secretary to the Assistant Principal at Fulton High School from the late 1960's to the early 1980's. She ran the Autoworld Museum/Kingdom Expo for four years. She was a volunteer for "Meals On Wheels. " She was a member of the Garden Club, the Hospital Auxiliary, and friend of the Churchill Memorial & Library, a member of the Mid-MO Antique & Vintage Car Club, and a member of the Board of Associates, Fulton College Fund. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 23, at the First Presbyterian Church in Fulton with the Rev. John Barden officiating. Entombment will follow in Callaway Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Family will receive friends on Monday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, the First Presbyterian Church Building Fund and the Churchill Memorial & Library.
BELLO

BERENDZEN
Elizabeth Ann "Liz" Berendzen, 62, of Jefferson City died Friday, December 19, 2003 at her home.
She was born July 3, 1941 in St. Elizabeth, a daughter of Conrad and Anna Massman Bax. She was a 1959 graduate of St. Elizabeth High School. She was married November 16, 1968 in Jefferson City to Marvin Berendzen, who survives at the home.
She worked as a bookkeeper for McKay Motors since 1975. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, and enjoyed sewing, fishing, and playing bingo.
She is also survived by three daughters: Pam Wolken and husband Steve of Jefferson City; Brenda Thompson and husband Jason of Jefferson City; Peggy Eskens and husband Bob of Jefferson City; one brother, Jerry Bax of St. Louis; three sisters: Rose Mantle of Naples, Florida; Bea Caskey of Lake Wales, Florida; Emmy Stenger of St. Louis; and five grandchildren: Danielle Killion, Sammy Thompson, Zachary Wolken, Emily Eskens, and Ashley Eskens. She was preceded in death by her parents, Conrad and Anna Bax; two sisters, Irene Hilger and Annette Bax; and one brother, Al Bax.
Friends will be received from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Houser-Millard Funeral Directors - Jefferson City Chapel, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, December 22, 2003 at St. Peter Catholic Church with Fr. Donald W. Lammers officiating. Interment will follow in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the St. Peter Catholic School. BRADSHAW
Hollis Jackson "Doc" Bradshaw, Sr., 77, Rocky Mount, died Dec. 18, 2003, in Rocky Mount.
He was born Nov. 2, 1926, in Lovonia, a son of Lloyd and Catherine (Dovie) Bradshaw. He was married to Bernice (Stonesifer) Bradshaw, who died Jan. 2, 1992.
Survivors include: four sons, Larry Bradshaw, Las Vegas, Nev., Dennis Bradshaw, Buena Park, Calif., Mike Bradshaw, Monrovia, Calif., and Hollis Bradshaw, Jr., Rocky Mount; two daughters, Cathy Bradshaw, Buena Park, and Glenice Bradshaw, Rocky Mount; twenty-two grandchildren; twenty-four great grandchildren; and three sisters, Hazel Johnson, Washington , Iowa, Nancy Schoonover, Manito, Ill., and Shirley Hahn, Washington , Iowa.
The remains were cremated. Internment will take place at a later date.
EVANS
Marye Grayce Evans, age 91, of Gravois Mills, died Dec. 20, 2003 at Lake Regional Hospital in Osage Beach.
She was born Feb. 6, 1912, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary Clark Opdycke. She was married on Aug. 13, 1974 to Charles P. Evans, who died Sept. 26, 2003.
Survivors include: one stepson, Charles Henry Evans, Gravois Mills; four stepdaughters, Nancy Lohmar, Columbia, Joy Snelling, Lake Orion, Mich., Carolyn Graves, Pontiac, Mich., and Charlene Beegle, Barnett; 14 step-grandchildren, 29 step-great-grandchildren and 3 step-great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday at Garber Memorial Estates Cemetery in Laurie. Arrangements are under the direction of the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home of Laurie.
HILL
Vencil L. Hill, 78, of Jefferson City, formerly of Monroe City, MO, died at Friday, December 19, 2003 at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City.
Funeral Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 22, at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal. Burial will be at St. Jude Cemetery in Monroe City. Pallbearers will be Gary Dunkle, Ron Dunkle, Eddie Long, Joe Long, Gene Scholes and David Zeiger.
Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until time of service at 1:00 p.m. Monday at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home.
Mr. Hill was born November 8, 1925, in Monroe City to Gordon Leroy and Margaret Fern Griffin Hill.
Mr. Hill was married July 13, 1947 to Maxine Dunkle, who preceded him in death in 1974.
He later married Betty Smelser Cawthon on May 20, 1978 in Hannibal, MO. She survives.
Other survivors include six daughters: Linda Ortmeyer, Susan Hill, Patti Hill, and Melissa Sommerer of Jefferson City, MO, Nancy Dalton of Clinton, MO, and Joni Sommerer of Republic, MO; eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; three brothers: Raymond Hill of Ashland, IL, Leo Hill of Splendora, TX, and Danny Hill of St. Charles, MO; six sisters: Frances Zeiger of Hannibal, MO, Lorene Webb, Naomi Lehenbauer and Reva Ogle of Monroe City, MO, Shirley Zoller of Osage Beach, MO, and Betty Karcher of Victorville, CA.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Hill was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Stull.
Mr. Hill was a plastering contractor, concrete finisher and farmer. He served in the US Army during 1945 and 1946. He received the Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon and Army of Occupation Medal Japan. He enjoyed vegetable gardening and sharing his bounty with others.

MATTHEWS
N. LaVaughn Matthews, age 91 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died December 19, 2003, at the Westphalia Retirement Center, Westphalia, Mo.
She was born September 10, 1912, at Calico Rock, Arkansas, the daughter of Shelby S. and Nona B. Denton Matthews.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Rachel Circle of the Church. She had been a volunteer at St. Mary's Health Center and Southgate Nursing Center.
She had been employed as an executive secretary with the Missouri Power & Light Company for many years until her retirement. She had also been church librarian for the First United Methodist Church for a number of years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, survivors include several cousins.
Visitation will be at the Buescher Memorial Home, Monday morning, 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.
Funeral services will be held at the Buescher Memorial Home, Monday morning at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Jerrol Boehmer to officiate. Interment will be in the Maplewood Cemetery, Harrison, Arkansas.
Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Buescher Memorial Home.
SHANAHAN
Marion Dwight Shanahan, 58, Barnett, passed away Dec. 19, 2003 at his home.
He was born Feb. 3, 1945 in Kansas City, the son of Marion T. Calhoon and Hazel Marie Wheeler Shanahan.
He was united in marriage in Eureka Springs, MO on January 14, 2001 with Denise Marocchi, who survives at the home.
Survivors include three sons, three step sons, one step daughter, one brother, one sister and seven grandchildren. His parents and one sister, Eula Belle Rooks, preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be at 7:00 p.m. Monday at the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Danny Owsley officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Diabetes Foundation.
PLUMMER
Jimmy Plummer, 85, of Jefferson City, died Tuesday, December 16, 2003, at Oak View Skilled Care Center.
He was born October 8, 1918, in Eads, Tennessee, a son of George and Josie Chaffin Plummer. He was married to Pearline Plummer, who preceded him in death.
He is survived by a daughter: Eunita Hoskins of Michigan; a sister-in-law: Ruby Murray of St. Louis, Missouri; a granddaughter: Winoka Evans of St. Louis, Missouri and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 22, 2003, at the Lake Charles Park Cemetery Chapel, with the Rev. C. V. Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the Lake Charles Park Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. ROLLINS
Sally Rollins, 62, Dixon, born February 13, 1941, a daughter of Charles and Laura Franklin VanOstran, died Friday at her residence of natural causes.
She was a member of Victory Hill Baptist Church and owner/operator of Sally's Plaza Restaurant, Vienna, for 20 years.
She is survived by son, John W. Rollins; daughters, Sherry Rowden, Deborah Backues, Betty Juergens and Donna Rollins; brothers, Charles and Herbert VanOstran; sisters, Alice Feeler and Lillian Vineyard; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 PM Sunday and 9 until 11 AM Monday at the Vienna Chapel of Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes with services there at 11 AM Monday.
Phyllis A. Sneva
Phyllis A. Sneva, 86, Linn Creek, Missouri, did at 12:37 p.m. Thursday, in her home.
Survivors include: one daughter, Patricia Olson, two granddaughters, one grandson, four great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Phyllis A. Sneva will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Camdenton, Missouri with Pastor John Davis officiating. Burial will be in the Greenmore Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Barnett, Missouri under the direction of Allee-Holman-Howe Funeral Home.
Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. until time of service on Monday in the church.

Betty A. West
Betty A. West, 71, of Jefferson City died Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at Oak View Skilled Care Center.
She was born February 5, 1932 in Jefferson City, a daughter of Clarence and Belle West.
She is survived by two sons, Gary Sparks and Don Sparks of Kansas City; one sister, Jacqueline Stevens of Jefferson City; and one brother, Bobby West of Leavenworth, Kansas.
