Polk, Joanna
Joanna Polk, 93, of Sarah, died Wednesday, February 13, 2002, at Baptist Memorial Hospital - DeSoto in Southaven of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Sunday, February 17, at 1 PM at Askew Grove M.B. Church. Rev. Walter Newson officiate the service. Burial was in Askew Grove cemetery near Longtown. Moore Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Polk, daughter of the late George and Lonnie Walton Carter, was born icon April 8, 1908, in Panola County. She was a housewife and a member of Eastern Star. She was also a member of Askew Grove M.B. Church, where she was a member of the Mother Board. She was the widow of the late Bedford Polk.

Survivors include five daughters, Georgia Crowder of Memphis, Tennessee, Mary Polk of Longtown, Edna Polk of Clarksdale, Coria Polk and Dorothy Polk, both of Sarah; four brothers, J.C. Polk and Elvis Polk, both of Memphis, Marvin Polk and George Polk, both of Como; 35 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren and seven great, great-grandchildren.

Pounders, Brandy K.
Brandy K. Pounders, 21, of Memphis, Tennessee, died Monday, August 19, 2002, at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis of heart failure.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 24, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Shiloh C.M.E. Church in Sardis. Rev. Gregory Stewart will officiate the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Cooley's Mortuary, Inc. has charge of arrangements.

Pounders, daughter of Lillie Rayford Pounders of Memphis and the late David Middleton, was born icon June 14, 1981, in Senatobia. She was disabled and a member of Black Chapel M.B. Church in Sardis.

Survivors, other than her mother, include a son, Jordon M. Curther of Memphis; a daughter, Morgan L. Pounders of Memphis; her grandparents, Easter Rayford and Bobby Walton, Sr., both of Batesville; a brother, Brodrick M. Pounders of Batesville; and two sisters, Karen Kuykendall of Batesville and Shunda L. Pounders of Jackson.

Caldwell, Josie Terrell
Josie Terrell Caldwell, 99, of Sardis, died Friday, September 26, 2003, at her residence of cancer.

Services were Sunday at Union Baptist Church. Burial was at Union Baptist cemetery. Rev. David Smith officiated. Moore Funeral Home had charge.

Caldwell, born icon Oct. 18, 1903, to the late William E. Terrell and the late Katie Mae Harris Terrell, was a school teacher for 40 years and a member of First Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by her husband Edgar Caldwell.

Survivors include one daughter Jo Adams Cross of Sardis; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Calvert, Thomas Pickard (Tom)
Thomas Pickard (Tom) Calvert, 77, of Griffin, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at the Spalding Regional Medical Center.

Services were Thursday at the Chapel of the Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Burial was at the Oak Hill cemetery. Dr. Bruce Morgan officiated. Conner-Westbury Funeral Home had charge.

Calvert, born icon April 26, 1926, to the late Henry Jackson Calvert and the late Annie Reeves Calvert, was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps serving in WWII, a retired salesman with Atlas Roofing, an avid gardener specializing in fantastic tomatoes, a golf enthusiast, a great story teller, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Griffin.

Survivors include his wife Peggy Jean Barber Calvert of Griffin; one son Phillip P. Calvert of Baltimore, Md.; daughters and sons-in-law, Karol and Robert Sullins of Griffin, and Nancy and Scott Massey of Bolder, Co.; son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Janelle Calvert of Marietta, Ga.; daughters and sons-in-law, Janie and Billy Ray Smith of Crowder, Susan and Gary Elliot of Crowder and Debbie and Randy Smith of Olive Branch; grandchildren, Matt Sullins, Jackson Sullins, Lauren Sullins, Hank Massey, Davis Massey, Clint Calvert, Reagan Calvert, William Scott Smith, Whitney Smith, Tiffnie Hickman, Kent Smith, Ashley Elliot, Andy Beck Elliot, and Adam Elliot; sisters, Ann Griffith of Memphis, Geraldine Bridges of Lambert; brother, Jack Calvert of Crowder; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Camp, Heather Nicole
Heather Nicole Camp, 14, of Courtland, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003 at Le Bonheur Childrens Medical Center in Memphis of heart failure.

Services were Saturday at Wells Funeral Home in Batesville. Burial was at Forrest Memorial Park in Batesville. Rev. Charles Locke officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Camp, born icon May 4, 1989 to Arvis D. and Barbara Freeman Camp of Courtland, was a ninth-grade student at South Panola High School and a member of Courtland Baptist Church.

Survivors in addition to her parents include two brothers, Mitchell Dawayne Camp and Nathan Mayron Camp, both of Courtland; grandparents, Odis and Betty Zenor of Courtland and Earl Camp of Sardis.

All memorials should be sent to Lebonheur Children's Medical Center.

Cantrell, Ruth
Ruth Cantrell, 78, of Gurnce, Ill., died Saturday, March 1, 2003.

There will be a memorial service at Rose Hill Baptist Church, Hwy 6 East, Batesville, Friday, March 7, at 2:30 p.m. Rev. R.L. Herron will officiate.

Cantrell, born icon July 11, 1924, to Clara and Joe Robertson, was a member of Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis and was a retired domestic worker.

Survivors include, one daughter, Mary Merchant of Enigma, Ga.; one son, Thomas Cantrell of Union Grove, Wis.; one daughter-in-law, Carol Cantrell of Townsend, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Jody Kee and Nicole Cantrell; three great-grandchildren, Wade Harnage, Nikki Kee, and Dakota Nickel; three brothers, Joe Robertson, II of Coila, Grady Robertson of Sardis, and Guy Robertson of Walls; and one sister, Betty Jo McGuire of Walls.

Carrback, Katie O'Conner Dulin
Katie O'Conner Dulin Carrback, 58, of Batesville, died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at her home of heart failure.

Services were Saturday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel with interment at McIvor cemetery. Rev. Roger Howell and Rev. Raye Legge officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Carrback, born icon May 28, 1944, to the late George E. and Ida M. Holden O'Conner was a homemaker and a member of McIvor Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald E. Carrback of Batesville; one daughter, Patsy Lynn Dulin Cox of Batesville; a son, Michael Gene Dulin of Batesville; two sisters, Georgia Anne O'Conner Smith of Sardis, and Janie Ruth O'Conner Holliway of Arkabutla; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Caruthers, Charles Kotz
Charles Kotz Caruthers, 72, of Sardis, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at his home of smoke inhalation due to a housefire.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 20 at 11 a.m. at Moore Funeral Home, in Sardis. Interment was held at Rose Hill cemetery. Rev. Steve Cannon officiated services. Moore Funeral Home in Sardis had charge.

Caruthers, born icon December 30, 1930, to the late Hulbert A. Caruthers and the late Ann Runken Caruthers Taylor was a Baptist and a former member of the National Guard.

Survivors include his wife Ruby Lee Childress Caruthers, of Sardis; one daughter, Suzan C. Hyde of Sardis; two sons, Scott Caruthers of Sardis, and Charles Caruthers, Jr. of Vicksburg; one sister, Betty Crystal of Madison, Miss; one brother, Ed Taylor of Ottowa, Kan.; and four grandchildren.

Chandler, Thomas Jesse
Thomas Jesse Chandler, 65, of Grenada, died Monday, June 30, 2003, at Baptist Hospital in Oxford of heart failure.

Services were Wednesday at Enon Baptist Church. Burial was at Grenada Memorial Garden. Bro. Fletcher Moorman and Bro. Ray Burks officiated. National Funeral Home had charge.

Chandler was a member of Enon Baptist Church and the National Guard and Army Reserve.

Survivors include his wife LaWanda Champion Chandler of Grenada; one daughter Jessica Laine Chandler of Grenada; one son Samy Wayne Chandler of Crystal Springs; five sisters, Bonnie Chandler, Melissa Jo Smith, and Sherry Crenshaw, all of Water Valley, Cindy Chandler of Gulfport and Rita Graham of Pontotoc; one brother Billy Wayne Chandler of Batesville; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Chitry, Donald Walter Sr.
Donald Walter Chitry, Sr. 73, of Batesville, died Thursday, February 20, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford.

Services were Tuesday at Dickins Funeral Home Chapel with interment at Batesville Magnolia cemetery. Rev. Allan Kilgore officiated. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.

Chitry, born icon Sept. 14, 1929, to the late Charles Chitry and the late Corinne Brier Chitry was a parts distributor for Chrysler Corp., assembly person in the missile program and boat captain for the port of New Orleans. He attended the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Eunice Marie McDaniel Warren Chitry of Batesville; one son, Donald Walter Chitry of Rialto, Calif.; two step-sons, Roger Warren and Ricky Warren both of Batesville; one daughter, Dianne Spicer of Alpine, Calif.; one step-daughter, Linda Goodnight of Batesville; 17 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sherry Rodgers.

Memorials may be sent to Batesville Magnolia cemetery, P.O. Box 302, Batesville, MS 38606.

Chrestman, Harold Max
Harold Max Chrestman, 72, of Belen, died Thursday, May 29, 2003, at Northwest MS Regional Medical Center in Clarksdale.

Services were Sunday at West Marks Baptist Church in Marks. Burial was at Belen cemetery. Rev. Todd Bowen officiated. Kimbro Funeral Home had charge.

Chrestman, born, Oct. 12, 1930, to the late Charles Graden Chrestman and the late Charlene Marie Mitchell Chrestman, was a retired farmer, a member of West Mark Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a Quitman County Supervisor for 32 years.

He is preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Tidwell Chrestman.

Survivors include his wife Mary Louise Nosser of Belen; one son Ronnie Chrestman of Seneca, S.C.; one step-son Rainey Scott of Brandon; one brother Tommy Chrestman of Cleveland; one step-brother Jerry Haney of Boyle and one granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to Belen cemetery Fund, Belen.

Christian, Donald C. "Donny"
Donald C. "Donny" Christian, 53, died Saturday, April 26, at his residence.

Funeral services were Monday at the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Fulton. Burial was in Itawamba Memorial Gardens. Bro. David Aullman and Bro. Bill Adams officiated. The American Legion Post 51 presented the flag. McNeece -Morris Funeral Home had charge.

Christian, born icon May 17, 1949, was a graduate of the University of Mississippi, a former police chief in Batesville, worked as a private investigator the past several years, a veteran of the Vietnam War and served overseas in South Korea in the military police/criminal investigation division and he was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church.

Survivors include his parents, Clint and Frances Dulaney Christian of Fulton; one daughter Leigh McConnell of Mobile, Ala.; one brother Dennis Christian of Batesville; one sister Linda Christian of Oxford and two grandsons.
