Essie Mae Adair, 85, of Pope, died Tuesday, August 19, 2003, at her daughter's residence in Pope due to cancer.

Services were Sunday at Springhill Pope M.B. Church. Burial was at Eureka A.M.E. Zion Church cemetery. Hodges Funeral Home had charge.

Adair was a native of Panola County and a homemaker.

Survivors include her daughter Lorraine Chapman of Pope; 12 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and four great, great-grandchildren.

Aiken, Mary Emily
Mary Emily Aiken, 98, of Sardis, died Friday, March 21, 2003, at Tri Lakes Medical Center in Batesville of heart failure.

Services are today at 2:30 p.m. at Graveside. Dr. Doyce Gunter will officiate. Burial at Tyro Baptist cemetery near Senatobia. Moore Funeral Home in Sardis has charge.

Aiken, born icon Nov. 3, 1904, to the late Charles Duncan Gibbs and the late Ida Brown Gibbs, was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church and was the wife of the late William Floyd Aiken.

Survivors include one son Dr. Michael Aiken of Cody, Wyo.; one brother Edward Gibbs of El Dorado, Ark.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Aldridge, Viola Willis "Cooter"
Viola Willis "Cooter" Aldridge, 85, of Marks, died Monday, July 7, 2003, at her residence.

Services were Wednesday at Faith Baptist Church in Lambert. Burial was at Marks cemetery. Rev. Mark Green, Rev. David Parker and Rev. Bobby Bell officiated. Kimbro Funeral Home had charge.

Aldridge, born icon Feb. 16, 1918, to the late W.C. Willis and the late Ella Josephine McClendon Willis, was a homemaker and a member of West Marks Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband J.W. Aldridge.

Survivors include two sons, Frankie Aldridge of Marks and Steve Aldridge of Memphis; two daughters Maxine Bell of Marks and Margie McArthur of Darling; three brothers, Bill Willis of Clarksdale, Daniel Willis of Greenwood and Jimmy Willis of Marks; one sister Daisy Aldridge of Marks; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Ales, Alvin Jackson
Alvin Jackson Ales, 89, of Batesville, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003. at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

Services were Thursday at Black Jack Presbyterian Church with interment at Black Jack cemetery. Rev. Douglas Sullivan Gonzales and Rev. Alan Kilgore officiated. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.

Ales, born icon Sept. 4, 1913, to the late Robert Benjamin Ales and the late Nancy Maude Murphy Ales, was a retired mechanic, a Veteran of WWII, and a member of Black Jack Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Katie Mae Warren Ales of Batesville; one son, Keith Ales of Batesville; one daughter-in-law, Willa Odom Ales of Batesville; three grandchildren; Lacey Elizabeth Lenoir, Shannon Lynn Ales, and Gavin Thomas Ales; and two grandchildren, Meredith Ashton Arnold, and Preston Gregory Arnold.

Memorials may be sent to Black Jack cemetery Fund.

Ales, Virginia Dale Cooper
Virginia Dale Cooper Ales, 72, of Batesville, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at her residence of heart failure.

Services were Sunday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at Forrest Memorial Park. Rev. Kenneth Corley and Rev. Doug Pepper officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Ales, born icon April 10, 1931, to the late John D. and the late Odell Scruggs Cooper, was a homemaker and a member of Cold Springs United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband Lonnie P. Ales of Batesville and two sons, Jamie G. Ales and Lonnie Dwayne Ales, both of Batesville.

Alewine, Rodney Wayne "Ronnie" Sr.
Rodney Wayne "Ronnie" Alewine Sr., 55, of Como, died Friday, May 16, 2003, at his residence of heart failure.

Services were Monday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at Liberty Hill cemetery in Pope. Rev. Kevin Crofford officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Alewine, born icon June 26, 1947, to the late Fletcher Claude Alewine and Dolly Ophelia Ragon Alewine, was a member of North Batesville Baptist Church and a metal building fabricator.

Survivors include two daughters, Rhonda Renea Alewine Martin of Enid and Toni Lynn Alewine Cain of Batesville; one son Rodney Wayne Alewine Jr. of Pope; his mother Dolly Ragon Alewine of Courtland; five sisters, Carol Alewine Cook of Como, Ann Alewine Hudspeth of Senatobia, Claudette Alewine Wages of Senatobia, Delorse Alewine Cook of Courtland and Frances Alewine Garrison of Sardis; three brothers, David Alewine of Itta Bena, Danny Alewine and Steve Alewine both of Courtland; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Anderson, Dovia Raye
Dovia Raye Anderson, 82, of Chicago, Ill., died Monday, July 7, 2003.

Services were Sunday at Spring Hill ASA M.B. Church in Courtland. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Louis Wilson officiated. Cooley's Mortuary had charge.

Anderson, born icon Oct. 28, 1920, to the late George Anthony, was a housewife and a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Chicago, Ill.

Survivors include seven sisters, Sarah Munus, Emma Pittman, both of Cleveland, Ohio, Mable Anthony of Mississippi, Louise Anthony of St. Anne, Ill., Penelope Robinson, Clyde Hill and Pat Anthony, all of Chicago and three brothers, Calvin Anthony of St. Anne, George W. Anthony of Chicago, and Dwayne Gregory of St. Louis, Mo.

Anderson, James Edward "Jim"
James Edward "Jim" Anderson, 77, of Sardis, died Sunday, June 22, 2003, at Baptist Memorial-North Mississippi Hospital in Oxford of cancer.

Services were Wednesday at Davis Chapel United Methodist Church. Burial was at Davis Chapel cemetery in Sardis. Dr. Doyce Gunter and Rev. David Smith officiated. Moore Funeral Home had charge.

Anderson, born icon Feb. 24, 1926, to the late F.E. Anderson and the late Willie Wallace Anderson, was a general inspector for Mississippi Highway Department, a member of Davis Chapel United Methodist Church, a marine veteran of WWII, a Mason, a member of Sardis Lions Club and a member of the Sardis Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife Rachel Henson Anderson of Sardis; one daughter Cheryl Quarles of Hammond, La.; two sons, Francis Edward "Jimmy" Anderson of Sardis and John H. Anderson of Germantown, Tenn.; two sisters, Jerry Moore of Memphis and Billie Grist of Southaven and four grandchildren.

Anthony, Frank Lee
Frank Lee Anthony, 74, of Grenada, died Monday, July 28, 2003, at Grenada Medical Center.

Services are Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Dickins Chapel. Burial is at Batesville Magnolia cemetery. Rev. Don Bishop will officiate. Dickins Funeral Home has charge.

Anthony, born icon August 19, 1928, to the late James Kyle Anthony Sr. and the late Hattie Morris Anthony, was a member of the First Baptist Church.

He is preceded in death by his sister Sara Davidson.

Survivors include one brother James Kyle Anthony Jr. of Conway, Ark.; one sister Martha Major of Batesville and several nieces and nephews.

Ard, Bertice Cole
Bertice Cole Ard, 87, of Marks, died Sunday, July 27, 2003, at Quitman County Hospital in Marks of heart failure.

Services were Tuesday at West Marks Baptist Church. Burial was at Bellvue cemetery. Rev. Tim Mims officiated. Kimbro Funeral Home had charge.

Ard, born icon April 26, 1916, to the late James B. Cole and the late Florence Davis Cole, was a retired owner of the Fabric Center in Marks and a member of West Marks Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by her husband Lloyd Ard.

Survivors include three daughters, Wanda A. Pritchard of Marks, Peggy A. O'Briant of Pearland, Texas and Patricia A. Pirkle of Brookfield, Ga.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to West Marks Baptist Church Music Ministry.

Armstrong, Paul
Paul Armstrong, 60, of Oakland, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford.

Services were Saturday at Parrish Grove M.B. Church in Oakland. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Grady McKinney officiated. Cooley's Mortuary had charge.

Armstrong, born icon Dec. 16, 1942, to the late Hubert Armstrong and the late Lula Mosley, was a retired truck driver. He was a member of Parrish Grove M.B. Church where he served as deacon and a Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include his wife Mary Armstrong of Oakland; two sons, Larry T. Davis and Permirs L. Davis, both of Oakland; two daughters, Melinda Purnell of Oakland and Sherry Moore of Omaha, Neb.; six sisters, Rosie Moore, Levonne Moore, Janie Smith, and Pauline Smith all of Oakland, Mildred Walters and Ella Bristow, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; three brothers, Tommie Lee Moore of Oakland, Sylvester Moore of Milwaukee, Wis., and Louis Armstrong of Chicago, Ill.; and nine grandchildren.

Armstrong, Traleesia Dajanique "Daja"
Traleesia Dajanique "Daja" Armstrong, 1, of Sardis, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, at LeBonheur Children's Medical Center in Memphis.

Services were Sunday at Ruffin Grove M.B. Church in Como. Burial was at Mt. Level cemetery. Rev. Timothy Smith officiated. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home in Pontotoc had charge.

Survivors include her mother Talisa Clay of Sardis; her father Triston Armstrong of Sardis; one brother Detaviun Armstrong of Sardis; her maternal grandmother Rose J. Perry of Sardis; her maternal grandfather Elmer Burdette of Memphis; her paternal grandmother Evira Taylor of Sardis; her paternal grandfather Leon Taylor of Como; her maternal great-grandmother Mary Ann Clay of Sardis and her paternal great-grandparents, Rev. Mack Taylor and Hazel Taylor of Como and Vetta Armstrong of Senatobia.
