Barr, Mavis Reed
Mavis Reed Barr, 82, of Batesville, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center in Batesville.

Barr, born icon July 1, 1922, to the late Josh and Mary Lou Matthew Reed, was a retired restaurant owner and cook and a member of West Camp M.B. Church.

Services were Saturday at West Camp M.B. Church. Burial was in West Camp cemetery. Rev. Zannie Leland Jr. officiated. Cooley's Mortuary had charge.

Survivors include one daughter Martha R. Dean of Batesville; three sons, Willie O. Reed of Batesville, Elbert Barr of Oakland, Calif. and Lamar Reed of Chicago, Ill.; one sister Nettie R. Hubbard of Memphis, Tenn.; one grandson whom she raised, Kendrick Roydell Barr and a granddaughter she raised, Sonia Robinson, both of Batesville; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Barshinger, Mary Elizabeth
Mary Elizabeth Barshinger, 59, of Southaven, died Sunday, September 19, 2004, at Methodist Germantown Hospital in Memphis.

Barshinger was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.

Graveside services were Thursday at Twin Oaks Funeral Home in Southaven. Burial was in Oak Grove Church of Christ cemetery in Dukedom, Tenn. Twin Oaks Funeral Home had charge.

She was preceded in death by her parents Leander Nelson and Mary Roberts; two sisters, Sarah Walker and Heather Powell and three brothers, Jimmy Lee Nelson, Lopez Nelson and Franklin Nelson.

Survivors include her husband Jim Barshinger of Southaven; one daughter Christine Goodnight of Sardis; one son Jeffrey Allen Barshinger of Horn Lake and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Wings Division of the West Clinic in Memphis, Tenn.

Bates, Bennie Boyce
Sardis, Miss. - Bennie Boyce Bates, 85, of Sardis, died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, N.C.

Funeral services were Wednesday at Sardis United Methodist Church. Graveside services were Thursday at City cemetery in Red Bay, Ala. Rev. Jim Cox and Rev. Doyce Gunter officiated. Moore Funeral Home had charge.

Bates, born icon to the late Bennie Thomas Bates and Zelma Hester Bates, was retired from Rural Industries as director for the state of Alabama. He was known in his community as a master craftsman.

Survivors include his wife Maurine Alverson Bates; one daughter Donna Bates Wilson; one son Jan B. Bates; and seven grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sardis United Methodist Church.

Beard, Charles L.
Charles L. Beard, 73, of Courtland, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at his residence of heart failure.

Services were Thursday at Courtland Baptist Church. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park in Batesville. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Beard, born icon Aug. 22, 1930, to the late John Henry and the late Eddie Mae White Beard, was a retired factory employee of Dunlap & Kyle and a member of Courtland Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife Barbara Weeks Beard of Courtland; one daughter Connie Sue Beard Pennington of Courtland; one son Charles Daniel Beard of Courtland; three sisters, Virginia Beard Gray of Batesville, Mary Frances Beard Hutchens of Oxford and Faye Beard Bradley of Senatobia; four brothers, J.W. Beard of Courtland, Robert Beard of Batesville, Douglas Beard of Batesville and Thomas Beard of Montemorelos, Mexico; and three granddaughters.

Beard, Harry Lee
Harry Lee Beard, 54, of Water Valley, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, in Panola County.

Services were Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, at Seven Oakes Funeral Home Chapel in Water Valley. Burial was at the First United Pentecostal cemetery in Water Valley. Bro. John Ford officiated. Seven Oakes Funeral Home had charge.

Beard, born icon Aug. 18, 1949, was a member of First United Pentecostal Church in Water Valley.

Survivors include his wife Janie Beard of Water Valley; one daughter Melinda Whitehorn of Batesville; two brothers, J.B. Beard of Edmonton, Ky. and William Beard of Water Valley; one sister Lucy Mae Hendricks of Water Valley; and three grandchildren.

Bell, Marie Nelson
Marie Nelson Bell, 83, of Batesville, died Thursday, September 23, 2004, at Senatobia Convalescent Center in Senatobia.

Bell, born icon April 4, 1921, to the late Garland G. and Audrey Rowsey Nelson, was a member of the Eureka United Methodist Church.

Services were Sunday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Clay Baker officiated. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

She was preceded in death by her husband James Prentiss Bell.

Survivors include two daughters, Agnes Bell Barnett of Courtland and Margaret Bell Mayo of Southaven; one sister Katie Lee Nelson Bell of Germantown, Tenn.; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Belvin, Kenneth Louis
Batesville, MS - Kenneth Louis Belvin, 39, of Batesville, died Friday, May 14, 2004, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center in Batesville.

Graveside services are today at 11 a.m. at Forrest Memorial Park in Batesville. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Belvin, born icon June 16, 1964, to Gerald and Edna Booth Belvin, was a self-employed construction worker.

Survivors include one son Brice Holden Belvin of Batesville; his father and step-mother, Gerald and Wanda Belvin, both of Oxford; his mother Edna Booth Scroggins of Leakesville; one sister Cathryn Tracie Belvin of Water Valley; one brother Jerry Jay Belvin of Olive Branch; and grandparents, Joshep and Catherine Woodard of Batesville.

Berry, Michael Wayne
Michael Wayne Berry, 45, of Sardis, died Friday, June 11, 2004, at his residence.

Services were Monday at Moore Funeral Home in Sardis. Burial was in Cherry Creek Baptist cemetery in Ecru. Mr. Hal Johnson and Rev. James Lewis officiated. Moore Funeral Home had charge.

Berry, born icon March 20, 1959, born icon to Carl and Helen Doherty Berry, was a physical therapist for Tupelo Hospital.

Survivors include his father Carl Berry of Batesville; one sister Brenda Carlene Berry of Sardis; and two brothers, Danny Berry of Sardis and Jerry Berry of Horn Lake.

Bethel, Cassandra
Cassandra Bethel, 41, of Sardis, died Wednesday, August 18, 2004, at Baptist East of cancer.

Services were Sunday at Braham Chapel. Burial was at Braham Chapel cemetery. Rev. Mack Taylor officiated. Delta Burial of Marks had charge.

Bethel, born icon Nov. 20, 1962, graduated from Jacksonville High School and Carbondale College. She was a nursing student and a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include her parents Elvin Bethel and Sallie Bethel, both of Sardis and three brothers, Elvin Bethel Jr. of Oklahoma, Garrett Bethel of California and James Bethel of Sardis.

Birge, Dexter T.
Dexter T. Birge, 28, of Como, died Monday, March 29, 2004.

Services are Saturday at Cistern Hill M.B. Church in Como. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Felix Cauthen Funeral Home has charge.

Birge was a member of Simon Chapel #2 Church and a store manager.

Survivors include one son Aleric Jones Birge of Horn Lake; his parents, Robert and Dorothy Birge of Como; six sisters, Shelia S. Stitts of Alsip, Ill., Shunnan R. Richardson of Senatobia, Evette Butler Mister of Batesville, Debbi S. Birge of Como, Kimberly Peagues of Sardis and Sharon Montgomery of Chicago, Ill.; and grandfather R.B. Rogers of Memphis.

Blakely, Robert Wesley "Bob" Sr.
Robert Wesley "Bob" Blakely Sr., 68, formerly of Sardis, died Saturday, September 18, 2004.

Blakely was a retired electrical instructor at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, was an Air Force Veteran, Troop Master for the Boy Scouts, formerly worked for Firestone Tire in Memphis for 15 years and was an Episcopalian.

Services were Tuesday, September 21, 2004, at Moore Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery. Moore Funeral Home had charge.

He was preceded in death by his son Robert "Bobby" Wesley Blakely Jr.

Survivors include his wife Barbara Hagar Blakely of Ocean Spring, Md.; two daughters, Angela C. Blakely of Santa Fe, Texas and Leslie B. Cooley of Picayune; two sons, Fredrick Eugene Blakely of Ocean Springs and Christopher Herbert Blakely of Niagara Falls, Canada; two sisters, Dorothy B. Harris of Southaven and Pat J. Blakely of Sardis and four grandchildren.

Bland, Ralph
Marks, MS - Ralph Bland, 53, of Marks, died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at his residence.

Services were Friday at First United Pentecostal Church in Marks. Burial was in Magnolia cemetery in Batesville. Rev. Harold Smith officiated. Kimbro Funeral Home had charge.

Bland, born icon March 3, 1951, was a farmer and a member of First United Pentecostal Church.

Survivors include seven sisters, Eloise Williams of Batesville, Mary Nell Bland of Coles Point, Linda Bland of Crowder, Helen Bell and Jacqueline Bailey, both of Marks, Lois Daniels and Betty Ann Sanders, both of Memphis; and two brothers, William Bland and Louis Bland, both of Sledge.
