Steven Rudd, 26, of Senatobia, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at North Oak Regional Medical Center in Senatobia..

Services will be Saturday, Feb. 21 at 11 a.m. at Cooley's Mortuary Chapel with interment in Rock Hill cemetery. Cooley's Mortuary has charge of the arrangements.

Rudd was employed as an assistant manager for Taco Bell in Senatobia and was a member of the Sardis Church of Christ.

Survivors include his father Arthur D. Rudd of Batesville, Bessie Lee Gassion of Batesville; one daughter Ta'Meria Bailey Rudd of Senatobia; two brothers, Jerry Rudd of Florida and Edward Butler of Sardis; and one sister Cynthia Butler of Memphis.

Samuels, Vonita Louise
Vonita Louise Samuels, 69, of Batesville, died Tuesday, September 7, 2004, at Graceland Nursing Home.

Samuels, born icon June 12, 1935, to the late George Gerald Green and the late Lucille Hulsey Green, was a homemaker.

Services were Thursday at Dickins Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at Jumper Chapel cemetery in Water Valley. Rev. Damon Plummer officiated. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.

Survivors include three brothers, John Russell Green and Bobby Joe Green, both Iuka and Billy Green of Batesville and one sister Edna Raymond of Batesville.

Sanford, Angelo "Dick" Jr.
Angelo "Dick" Sanford Jr., 67, of Batesville, died Sunday, March 14, 2004, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford of a stroke.

Services are Saturday at Springhill Pope M.B. Church. Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Batesville. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hodges Funeral Home has charge.

Sanford was a retired construction worker for F & F Construction.

Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Veazey, Brinda Chapman and Mary Robinson, all of Pope; three sons, Johnnie S. Sanford of Courtland, Francis Sanford and Will Anthony Sanford, both of Pope; one sister Rosie Sanford Thomas of Courtland; 17 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Sanford, Kenneth Donnell "Don"
Kansas City, Kan. - Kenneth Donnell Sanford of Kansas City, Kan., 23, formerly of Batesville, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004, in Kansas City of homicide.

Services are Saturday at Pilgrim Rest M.B. Church in Batesville. Burial will be in Pilgrim Rest cemetery. Bishop Garfield Tyler will officiate. Cooley's Mortuary Inc. has charge.

Sanford, born icon Oct. 5, 1980, to Kenneth Chapman of Batesville and Jimmie Jean Ford Mays of Coldwater, was a member of the Rejoicing Temple C.O.G.I.C. Church in Kansas City.

Survivors in addition to his parents include his step-father, Robert Mays Jr. of Coldwater; a special friend Dontay Taylor of Kansas City; one daughter LaDaejeo Sanford of Kansas City; four sisters, Denise Lashell Sanford of Courtland, Carolyn Renee Sanford, Tammy Annette Sanford and Aretha Webb, all of Batesville; two brothers, Reginald Ford and James Travis Sanford, both of Kansas City, Mo.; and his grandmother Lillie Pearl Chapman of Batesville.

Sawyer, Georgie Harmon
Georgie Harmon Sawyer, 80, formerly of Batesville, died Tuesday, March 9, 2004.

Memorial services were Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Middletown, Ohio. Burial was in Woodside cemetery. Rev. Karen Haak officiated. Breitenbach-McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home of Middletown, Ohio had charge.

Sawyer was active in the Sorosis Club, Middletown Garden Club, Butler County Medical Auxiliary, Wildwood Golf Club, Middletown Tennis Club, Browns Run Country Club, Middletown Duplicate Bridge Club and a volunteer for many organizations mainly Middletown Symphony, Arts in Middletown, Middletown Library, American Cancer Society and Hospice of Middletown.

She was a graduate of Mississippi University for Women, with majors in bacteriology and chemistry. She worked as a chemist for City Service Laboratories in Lake Charles, La. for a year before moving to Ohio. She was employed by Proctor & Gamble for five years while living in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Survivors include one son James L. Sawyer of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two daughters, Anne Bradley Sawyer of Edgartown, Mass. and Georgie Elizabeth Sawyer of Portland, Ore.; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. James L. Sawyer and a brother Miller Bradley Harmon. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 2910 Central Avenue, Middletown, Ohio 45044, or charity of choice.

Sayle, David Bardwell
David Bardwell Sayle, 65, of Charleston, died Friday, March 26, 2004, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford.

Services were Sunday at the Presbyterian Church in Charleston. Burial was in Charleston cemetery. Newsom Funeral Home had charge.

Sayle, born icon Sept. 13, 1938, to the late Frank and the late Eleanor Sayle, was a farmer and a marine veteran.

Survivors include his wife Joan Denley Sayle of Charleston; three daughters, Beth Sayle Roberts and Gwen Sayle Lott, both of Grenada and Gene Sayle Flautt of Charleston; one sister Sally Sayle Weathersby of Memphis; and five grandchildren.

Scallorn, Lance Leon
Lance Leon Scallorn, 87, of Sardis, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center of heart failure.

Services were Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Moore Funeral Home Chapel in Sardis. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery in Sardis. Rev. Jerry Sanford officiated. Moore Funeral Home had charge.

Scallorn, born icon Jan. 30, 1917, to the late Robert Lee and the late Tencil Merriman Scallorn, was a retired supervisor for Sardis Luggage Company. He was a member of First Baptist Church and a mason.

Survivors include one daughter Joyce Cayson of Red Bay, Ala.; one son Roy Scallorn of Sardis; one sister Dell Bailey of Sardis; and one brother Leslie Scallorn of Batesville.

He was preceded in death by his wife Clara Scallorn.

Scates, Robert Lee
Robert Lee Scates, 68, of Como, died Friday, March 12, 2004 at his residence of cancer.

Graveside services were Monday at Harmontown Baptist cemetery near Como. Moore Funeral Home in Sardis had charge.

Scates, born icon April 20, 1935, to the late Lyman and June Lewter Scates, was a retired technician for Bellsouth and a member of Temple Baptist Church in Memphis.

Survivors include one daughter Julia Marie Herring of Saratoga, N.Y.; two sons, Don Scates and Howard Scates, both of Harmontown; one sister Carolyn Buoni of Memphis; one brother Dan Scates of Collierville, Tenn.; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Charlotte Howard Scates.

Schuwerk, Dr. Ernest H.
Dr. Ernest H. Shuwerk, 78, of Batesville, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at his residence of heart failure.

Shuwerk, born icon Oct. 26, 1925 to the late Edward Glenn and Gertrude Geiger Schuwerk, was owner and physician for 32 years of Schuwerk Chiropratic in Batesville.

Services were Wednesday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park. Rev. Clint Harris officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

He was preceded in death by his sister Jennie Schuwerk Hiller and his brother Edward Schuwerk.

Survivors include his wife Lynn Smith Schuwerk of Batesville; one step-daughter Sherri Lynn Sutton of Glenville, W.Va.; one step-son Joseph M. Sutton of Tallassee, Ala.; his sister-in-law Evelyn Schuwerk of Springboro, Pa.; three nephews; two nieces and one step-grandson, Cody Sutton of Tallassee, Ala.

Scroggins, Pauline H.
Pauline H. Scroggins, 84, of Batesville, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford of heart failure.

Graveside services are today at 11 a.m. at Forrest Memorial Park cemetery in Batesville. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Scroggins, born icon on Oct. 25, 1919, to the late Clarence and the late Minnie Bell Hallmark, was a homemaker.

Survivors include one son Sonny Scroggins; five daughters, Mary Scroggins McGregor and Judy Scroggins, both of Batesville, Kathleen Scroggins King of Red Banks, Jessie Scroggins of Oxford, and Peggy Scroggins of Memphis; one sister Mamie Scroggins Bishop of Marks; 23 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 12 great great-grandchildren.

Scruggs, Sarah Lottie
Batesville, MS - Sarah Lottie Scruggs, 95, of Batesville, died Monday, April 19, 2004, at Beverly Health Care in Batesville.

Services were Thursday at Cold Springs Methodist Church in Batesville. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Kenneth Corley officiated. Moore Funeral Home had charge.

Scruggs, born icon Oct. 25, 1908, to the late Lawson and late Dollie Brewer McClure, was a housewife and a member of Cold Springs Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son Edward Lee Scruggs of Sardis; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great, great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband James "Bud" Scruggs; and three sons, Jimmy, Leslie and Kenneth Scruggs.

Self John Frank
Crenshaw, Miss. - John Frank Self, 55, of Crenshaw, died Friday, August 27, 2004, at his residence of heart failure.

Self, born icon Oct. 27, 1948, to the late Charlie Frank and the late Margaret C. McCraney Self, was a mechanic.

Services were Monday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at Longtown cemetery. Rev. Clint Harris officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Survivors include his wife Shirley Dykes Self of Crenshaw; two daughters, Margaret Self Frazier of Crenshaw and Pauline Self Hudspeth of Dundee; one son John Henry Self of Senatobia; four step-daughters, Tammy Ann Carey and Peggy Jean Henderson, both of Rome, Georgia Renee Granados of Brookhaven and Jimmie Dale Parnell of Lyon; one sister Margie Ray of Sledge; three brothers, Charlie Cecil Self of Pascagoula, Roger Self of Sledge and James Self of Byhalia; one half-sister Peggy Self of Oxford; two half-brothers, Charles Self of Memphis, Tenn. and Bill Self of Strayhorn; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
