Jerry Gold Veazey

Jerry Gold Veazey passed away peacefully on November 23, 2014, in Senatobia.

Jerry was born icon on July 11, 1931, in Coldwater to Willis Patrum Veazey, Jr. and Ganel Gold Veazey.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Betsy Lowrey Veazey. He is also survived by his brother, Ronald Day Veazey (Marianne), sister, Gay Veazey Williams (Michael), sons, Jerry Gold Veazey, Jr. (Anne), Leon Lowrey Veazey (Debbie), Anndy Collins Veazey (Cindy), and Patrum Booth Veazey (Vicki), six grandsons, three granddaughters, six great grandsons, and one great granddaughter.

Jerry’s parents and brother, Willis Patrum Veazey, III, preceded him in death.

Jerry graduated from Coldwater High School and continued his education at Ole Miss, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity, and the University of Southern Mississippi. In the early 1950’s, Jerry began his career in the lumber business at Sterling Lumber Co. in Senatobia. In 1970, he started The Veazey Lumber Co. in Senatobia, where he continued to work until 2010, and where his children and grandchildren have worked over the years.

A long time member of First Baptist Church of Senatobia, Jerry served on the building committee that oversaw the construction of the now-standing sanctuary.

An avid outdoorsman, Jerry grew up deer hunting and duck hunting with his grandfather and father in the 1940’s and 1950’s. His passion for hunting has truly transcended generations, as his great grandsons are now learning this craft in the same Veazey-Smith Camp that his father founded in 1950 and where Jerry and his brothers, sons, and grandsons have hunted for decades.

Visitation was held at First Baptist Church Senatobia on November 25 with services having immediately followed in the church sanctuary.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Patrum and Ganel Veazey scholarship at Northwest Mississippi Community College at P. O. Box 7015, Senatobia, MS 38668.

Pate-Jones Funeral Home in Senatobia had charge of the arrangements.

James Enoch Marsalis Jr.

MADISON - James Enoch Marsalis Jr., 52, died of cancer at St. Dominics on June 1, 1998. Services were Wednesday at Nowell-Flippen in Ridgeland.

Mr. Marsalis was born icon in Vicksburg. He has lived in the Deerfield area for the past six years and worked for Parker-Hannifin in Madison for the past 20 years as a tool and die maker. He served four years in Vietnam with the Air Force and was a member of the Carlisle United Methodist Church in Learned.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Marsalis of Canton; sons, Michael Gray of Grand Junction, Colo., Matthew Gray of Collins and Mark Marsalis of Madison; daughters, Cynthia Louise Ingle of Ocean Springs and Stacy Eady of Jackson; father, Leila Marsalis Sr. of Learned; brothers Watson Marsalis of Learned, and Hasie Marsalis of Port Gibson; and sisters, Jeanie Hynum of Richland, and Alice Seals of Buffalo Gap, Texas.

Paula C. O'Bannon

MADISON - Paula C. O'Bannon, 62, a homemaker, died of cancer at her home in Madison.

Services were Tuesday, June 2, 1998 at Wilcox Funeral Home in Carthage with Dr. John Temple officiating and interment in the Cedar Grove cemetery.

Mrs. O'Bannon was a native of Leake County. She was a longtime resident of the Cedar Grove Community in Leake County, moving to Madison 10 years ago. She was the former pianist at Cedar Grove Baptist Church for 25 years and former organist for Good Hope Baptist Church for eight years.

Mrs. O'Bannon was a member of the First Baptist Church of Madison, where she was an active member of Per-Sisters Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, James T. O'Bannon.

Pallbearers were: R.C. Moss, Jimmy Smith, Eric Brockman, Mark Baird, Glenn Ishee, and Wayne Thompson.

Survivors include: her daughter, Angela O. Cotton of Madison; sons, James "Bubba" O'Bannon of Clarksdale and Herschel O'Bannon of Brookhaven; brothers, Richard Cannon of Martinez, Ga. and Edward Cannon of Pearl; and three grandchildren.

Ellis 'Patty' Stewart

BRANDON - Mr. Ellis "Patty" Stewart, 82, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at St. Dominic Hospital from heart failure.

Services were held Friday, May 29, at Breeland Funeral Home Chapel with interment in the Canton cemetery. Visitation was held May 28.

Stewart was a native and lifelong resident of Rankin County. He was a member and past secretary for the Rankin County Hunting Club. Mr. Stewart was a fireman for the city of Canton prior to serving in the SeaBees for the US Navy during World War II. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include his brother, John H. Stewart of Beaver Creek, Ohio; sisters, Estelle Layton of Foxlake, Ill., Flora McNamara of Fairport, N.Y., Emma Sue Denson of Brandon, Dorothy Stewart of Brandon and Lawana Houser of Mesa, Ariz.

John G. 'Jack' Thompson

MADISON - John G. "Jack" Thompson Sr., 86, a retired automobile mechanic, died of pneumonia May 28, 1998, at St. Dominics-Jackson Memorial Hospital in Jackson.

Services were held at May 30, at the Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Church in Madison with John Sewell officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Michael Yerger, Johnny Yerger, Patton Dixon, Grae Dixon, Henry Partain, Billy Bennett, Robert Pooley and Ronnie Mollere. Make E. Seepe Funeral Directors of Jackson was in charge of arrangements.

Thompson was a native of Madison County and a veteran of WWII. He was a retired automobile mechanic having worked in Jackson and Canton. He was a communicant of Chapel of the Cross in Madison.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Thompson of Madison; sons, John G. Thompson Jr, of Brandon and Bruce K. Thompson of Florence; and 4 grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Chapel of the Cross, 674 Mannsdale Road, Madison, 39110.

E. H. Avent

E.H. Avent, 88, passed away, June 18, 2016 at Baptist DeSoto Hospital in Southaven. Mr. Avent was the widower of the late Amaryllis Fair Avent of Senatobia.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, in the Martin Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells Funeral Home. Interment followed in Magnolia cemetery in Batesville. The family received friends from 12:00 noon Wednesday until service time.

E.H. was born icon October 31, 1927 to the late William Avent and Hadye Haley Avent in Quitman County. E.H. worked for 30 plus years as a heavy equipment operator for Tennessee Gas. He was a former full-time fireman for the Clarksdale Fire Department. During his lifetime E.H. enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and gardening. He loved to travel. He loved old Western movies and visiting with friends. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Senatobia.

Those left behind to cherish his memory include his son, William E. Avent (Reda) of Senatobia, sister, Jo Ann Lee of Hernando, his beloved neighbors Wesley and Sandy Ozbirn, two step grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and loving wife Amaryllis, E.H. was preceded in death by one son Vaughn Keith Avent.

Earl Brewer

Earl Brewer, 81, cattleman, of Sarah, passed away on June 20, 2016. Funeral services were held at Solid Rock Assembly of God on June 23 at 12 noon. Burial followed in Senatobia Memorial cemetery.

He is survived by his daughters, Theresa Ann Brewer of Florence, Ala., Brenda Lee Brewer of Florence, Ala., Susie Brewer of Sarah, and Rosie Brewer of Sarah; sons, Don Jones of Florence, Ala., Tony Wayne Brewer of Florence, Ala., Timmy Ray Brewer of Florence, Ala., Christopher Earl Brewer of Seantobia, and Earl Brewer Jr. of Sarah; sisters, Marie Leach of Southaven and Irene Estrada of Southaven; brother, James Brewer of Horn Lake; and 22 grandchildren.

Felix Cauthen Funeral Home in Senatobia had charge of the arrangements.

Bobby Joe Broadway

Bobby Joe Broadway, 73, of Coldwater, passed away June 22, 2016 at North Oak Regional Medical Center in Senatobia. He retired as the Dean of Vocational Technology and the Executive Assistant to the President of Northwest Community College. He served there for 40 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louise Wynne Broadway.

He is survived by his daughter, Beth Broadway Thweatt of Coldwater; sisters, Connie Conner (Roy) of Southaven, MS, Josie Millner of Memphis, Tenn., and Betty Simmons of Greenville, Ala.; brothers, Howard Earl Broadway of Pontotoc, and Larry Broadway (Bess) of Hernando; two grandchildren, Chance Thweatt and Katie Beth Thweatt both of Horn Lake; sister-in-law, Jean Wynne Nunnally of Coldwater; and brother-in-law, Pat Lewis of Hernando.

Mr. Broadway was a member of Colonial Hills Baptist Church.

Memorials may be sent to NWCC Scholarship Fund.

Services were held Saturday, June 25, at 1:00 p.m. at Pate-Jones Funeral Home in Senatobia. Burial followed in Prichard cemetery in Coldwater.

Grace Ray Cowsert

Grace Ray Cowsert, 79, of Sardis, passed away Thursday, June 23, 2016 at Sardis Community Nursing Home.

She was born icon on September 10, 1936 in Panola County, to Ruth Phelps Ray and Marvin Ray. She was member of Hebron Baptist Church, was very outgoing and knew everyone.

She owned and operated numerous businesses in Sardis during her life and was a columnist for Sardis Nursing Home.

She is survived by one sister, Janet Ray of Batesville; two nieces, Linda Potts Crocker of Sardis and Louise Brooks Gray of Pope; one nephew, Edward Brooks of Enid and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Cowsert, her parents, sister, Frances Ray Brooks and brother, Aubrey Ray.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at Ray-Nowell Funeral Home – Sardis Chapel. Interment was in Hebron cemetery.

Mack W. Freeman

Mack W. Freeman, 69, farmer, of Senatobia, passed away on July 5, 2016.

Funeral services were held at Independent-Tyro Church on Saturday, July 9 at 12 noon. Burial followed in Independent-Tyro Church cemetery.

He is survived by his daughters, Sharon Malone, Pam Malone, Tokereitha Freeman and Mary Freeman, all of Senatobia; sons, Michael Pratcher of Memphis, Tenn., Travis Freeman of Senatobia, Walter Freeman of Senatobia, Mack Freeman Jr. of Senatobia; and Marco Freeman of Senatobia; sisters, Gladys Porter of Chicago, Ill., Betty Freeman of Senatobia, Ada Knight of Sardis, Sherry Porter of Kalamzoo, Mich., Lue Dore Porter of Kalamazoo, Mich., Dorothy Turner of Senatobia, Nittie Turner of Como; brothers, Tracy Porter of Kalamazoo, Mich. and Donald Porter of Kalamazoo, Mich.; 26 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Jocelyn R. Jackson

Major Jocelyn R. Jackson, 58, retired Army Major, passed away on July 6, 2016. Funeral services were held at Intercessory Prayer Outreach in Como on July 11 at 11 a.m. Burial was held at Harmonia cemetery in Sardis.

She is survived by five sisters, Lois Roseborugh of Senatobia, Marilynn Jackson of Como, Ann Marlow of Jacksonville, Fla., Valerie Spann of Jacksonville, Fla., and Keshia White of Como; and two brothers, Earnest Jackson Jr. of Senatobia and Cedric Jackson of Jacksonville, Fla.

Felix Cauthen Funeral Home in Senatobia had charge of the arrangements.

Marcia Gay Leggett

Marcia Gay Leggett, 61, passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at her home in Senatobia.

She loved animals and enjoyed playing pool and shuffleboard at the VFW.

The family received friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday, July 8 at Hernando Funeral Home. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 9 at Hernando Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed at Orrwood cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Keith Leggett of Senatobia; daughter, Jessica Leggett of Senatobia; son, Anthony Dustin Leggett (Leslie) of Eureka Springs, Ark.; father, William F. Hamilton of Hernando; brother, Derek Hamilton of Hernando; grandchildren, Aidan Leggett, Raven Leggett and Glory Leggett; great grandson, Nico Bloch.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Lorine Hamilton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ASPCA.
