Herbert Holt Coleman Jr.
JACKSON - Herbert Holt Coleman Jr., 61, a retired banker, died May 27, 1998, at Desert Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, Ariz.
Services were held June 1 from Covenant Presbyterian Church with interment in Parkway Memorial cemetery. Breeland Funeral Home in Canton handled arrangements.
A Canton native who lived in Jackson most of his life, Mr. Coleman was a senior vice president with Trustmark National Bank before retiring in 1992 after 32 years. He was an active fund raiser and supporter of various charities. He was a Mississippi State University graduate and an avid hunter, fisherman and sportsman. He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church.
Pallbearers were George Day, Clyde Edwards, Jim Stewart, Stuart Robinson, J.T. Simmons, Mart McMullen, Smiley Ratcliff, Ronnie Carroll and Lee Hawkins.
Survivors include his wife, Marimae C. Coleman of Jackson; son, Herbert H. Coleman of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter, Sarabeth Coleman Martinson of Huntsville, Ala.; sister, Carolyn Coleman Downs of Ft. Myers, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Thomas Covington Dent
NEW ORLEANS - Thomas Covington Dent, 66, author and poet, died Saturday, June 6, 1998, at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, La.
Services were held June 11 at Dillard University with the Rev. Andrew Jackson Young, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, delivering the eulogy. Remarks were also made by New Orleans Mayor Marc Morial and Dillard University President Michael Lomax, among others.
A noted author of several books, Dent's last book, "Southern Journey, " traced the oral history of the Civil Rights movement, focusing much on Madison County. A former college professor at Mary Holmes College, he also lectured at Tougaloo College in Madison County. He had served as executive director of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation for four years and was a member of Central Congregational United Church of Christ.
He had published two volumes of poetry and was co-founder of both the Congo Square Arts Collective and Callaloo, a Quarterly Journal of African and African American Arts and Letters. He had published a play, "Ritual Murder, " and had served as editor of the Morehouse College newspaper and worked for New York Age, a Harlem newspaper. He was active in many workshops to encourage young writers.
He was a political science graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga., and received a masters in creative writing from Goddard University. He also did post-graduate work at Syracuse University.
Survivors include his mother, Ernestine Jessie Covington Dent; brothers, Benjamin Dent and Walter Dent; nieces and nephews and many other friends around the world.
Grace Ann Durr
MADISON - Grace Ann Durr, infant, died June 9, 1998, at University Medical Center in Jackson.
Services were held at Canton City cemetery Saturday. Nowell-Flippin Funeral Home in Ridgeland handled arrangements.
Survivors include her parents, Salina and David Durr of Madison; sister, Rinna Whatley of Madison; maternal grandmother, Myrtis Simpson of Canton; paternal grandparents, Ruby and Terry Durr of Canton; and paternal great-grandparents, Vernell Wilkerson of Flint, Mich., and Lee Wilkerson of Tupelo.
William Dale Brock
CANTON -- William Dale Brock, 57, a retired Madison County constable, died Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, of heart failure at his home in Canton.
Services were held Saturday at Lone Pine cemetery in Canton. Nowell-Flippin Funeral Home of Canton handled arrangements.
A native and lifelong resident of Madison County, Mr. Brock had served as Madison County's constable for about 15 years, retiring in 1990. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of Lone Pine Baptist Church.
Survivors include his son, Billy Brock of Philadelphia.
William Edward Lax
CANTON -- William Edward Lax, 81, retired president of Protective Service Life Insurance, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, of pneumonia at Sonny Montgomery Veterans Hospital in Jackson.
Services were held Friday at Rosemont Gardens Funeral Home in Jackson with interment in Rosemont cemetery in Jackson.
A Dyersburg, Tenn., native, Mr. Lax had moved to McComb and then to Jackson, where he lived for 31 years before moving to Canton. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force, where he served in three wars. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and of St. Columbs Episcopal Church in Ridgeland. He was an avid golfer and member of the Colonial/Deerfield Country Club.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Charles Lax of Canton; sons, William E. Lax Jr. of Tampa, Fla., and Charles M. Lax of Collierville, Tenn.; sister, Rebecca Sinclair of Quitman; and three grandchildren.

Valarie Holoman Lee
RIDGELAND -- Valarie Holoman Lee, 81, a retired registered nurse, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, of heart failure at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland.
Services were held Saturday at Lakewood Memorial Park. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home of Jackson handled arrangements.
A Forest native, Mrs. Lee was a 1938 graduate of the Gilfoy School of Nursing, now associated with Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. She served in the U.S. Army during World War II as an operating room nurse in the European and African theaters, earning a bronze service star. She was also a charter member of St. Phillip's Episcopal Church on Old Canton Road in Jackson.
She was the widow of Dr. John Gordon Lee of New York and Washington, D.C.
Survivors include her three adopted children, Robert Lee of Pearl, David Lee of Brandon and Linda Varvaris of Jackson; six grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to St. Phillip's Episcopal Church.
Charles Douglas Beard Jr.
CANTON -- Charles Douglas Beard Jr., 75, a retired game warden, died Thursday, July 29, 1999, of heart failure at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
Services were held Saturday at Breeland Funeral Home Chapel in Canton with interment in Canton cemetery.
A native and lifelong resident of Madison County, Mr. Beard was a retired game warden with the Mississippi Department of Game and Fish. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the South Pacific.
Mr. Beard was an avid sportsman and fox hunter, those who knew him said, and he was a member of the Mississippi Fox Hunters Association. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Patsy R. Beard of Canton; daughters, Ann B. Clark of Madison and Jean B. Caraway of Canton; sisters, Virginia B. Barnes of Long Beach and Peggy B. Miller of Fallston, Md.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

James Wesley Daves
CANTON -- Mr. James Wesley Daves, 51, a bakery owner and operator, died Thursday, July 29, 1999, of heart failure at Madison County Medical Center in Canton.
Services were held Sunday at Nowell-Flippin Funeral Home Chapel in Canton with interment in Canton City cemetery.
A Holmes County native, Mr. Daves had moved to Madison County from Lexington about 30 years ago. He had owned and operated the Canton Bakery for 15 years. Before that, he had been an electrician for Fullilove & Lamkin Air Conditioning and Heating of Canton. He was an Army veteran of Vietnam with the rank of captain. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Canton.
Survivors include his wife, Dean Daves of Canton; son, Jimie Daves Jr. of Canton; step-daughter, Dana Ferrell of Nevarre, Fla.; mother, Mrs. Eddie Faye Daves of Lexington; brothers, Phillip Daves of Parchman, Barry Daves of Lexington and Allen Daves of Snow Lake, Ariz.; sisters, Carla Brown and Rita Brown, both of Lexington; and two grandchildren.
Vera Mae Culipher
CANTON -- Mrs. Vera Mae Culipher, 83, a homemaker, died Thursday, July 29, 1999, of heart failure at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.
Services were held Monday at Nowell-Flippin Funeral Home Chapel in Canton with interment in Sulphur Springs cemetery in Madison County.
A Covington County native, Mrs. Culipher moved to Madison County in 1929. She was a member of Farmhaven Baptist Church.
Mrs. Culipher was preceded in death by a son, Maurice E. Culipher, in 1996, and two great-grandsons and one granddaughter.
Survivors include her husband, Meredith O. Culipher of Canton; daughters, Jeanette Waldrop and Elizabeth "Liz" Pickens, both of Canton; brothers, Luther Graves and James Graves, both of Canton; sister, Maxi White of Mt. Olive; nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Doris B. Richards
RIDGELAND -- Mrs. Doris B. Richards, 80, a homemaker, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999, of brain cancer at Hospice Ministries of Ridgeland.
Services were held today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. from Broadmeadow United Methodist Church with the Rev. Geoffrey Joyner and Rev. Stewart Smith and interment in Parkway Memorial cemetery in Ridgeland. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home of Ridgeland handled arrangements.
A Gladbrook, Iowa, native, Mrs. Richards was a graduate of Gladbrook High School and Iowa State University. She had been a resident of the Jackson area for 44 years. She was an active member of Broadmeadow United Methodist Church. She served as president of the United Methodist Women, chairman of the Commission on Missions and a member of the administrative board.
She was the widow of Donald K. Richards.
Survivors include her daughter, Cindy Hopkins of Gulfport; sons, Charles Richards of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Don Richards Jr. and Fred Richards, both of Jackson; brothers, Warren Bruene of Dallas, Texas, and Richard Bruene of Gladbrook, Iowa; sisters, Merle Turner of Postville, Iowa, and Jean Polhemus of Spokane, Wash.; and eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Spencer E. O'Brien
JACKSON -- Spencer E. O'Brien, 22, a student, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, of surgical complications at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
Services were held Saturday at Christ United Methodist Church in Jackson with interment in Magnolia cemetery in Magnolia. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home of Ridgeland handled arrangements.
An undergraduate student at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, O'Brien had graduated from St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Ridgeland. He was an management information systems major and served as a residence advisory for Tutweiler Dormitory. He had received the university's Dean Bernie Sloan Spirit Award and was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and waterskiing, those who knew him said. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his parents, Mike and Julie O'Brien of Jackson; sisters, Laura O'Brien Fromdahl of Birmingham, Ala., and Polly O'Brien of Richmond, Va.; maternal grandmother, Sybil Domin of Magnolia; paternal grandmother, Annie-Marie Owens of McComb; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends; and godparents, Arnold and Beverly Dyre.
Memorials may be made to the patient care fund at Mississippi Methodist Rehabilitation Center or the building fund at Christ United Methodist Church.
Ray Albert O'Neal
MADISON -- Ray Albert O'Neal, 69, retired FAA inspector, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, of heart failure at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
Services were held Monday at Madison United Methodist Church with interment in Parkway Memorial cemetery. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home of Ridgeland handled arrangements.
A New Orleans, La., native, Mr. O'Neal had moved to Jackson in 1939. At Central High School he was a member of the band and was graduated in 1949. He later moved to Madison and helped organize the city's fire department.
Mr. O'Neal was active for several years in the Mid-Mississippi Antique Automobile Club and Magnolia Chapter Barbershop Quartets. He served 35 years in his church choir as well as more than 20 years as superintendent of Sunday school and several years as leader of the Methodist Youth Fellowship.
He was associated with the Madison Airport at Bruce Campbell Field from 1955 until his retirement in 1985, serving in several capacities including maintenance supervisor and FAA inspector.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Johnnie Shelley O'Neal; daughter, Peggy Johnson; son, Danny Ray O'Neal; and two grandchildren, all of Madison.

Louis Lipsey
MADISON -- Louis Lipsey, 91, a cotton buyer and farmer, died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, of heart failure at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson.
Services were held Wednesday at Pickens Presbyterian Church in Pickens with the Rev. Mike Philliber and Rev. Mike Conucheau and interment in Odd Fellows cemetery in Lexington. Southern Funeral Home of Lexington handled arrangements.
A Franklin native, Mr. Lipsey had been self employed as a cotton buyer and farmer. He was a Lexington High School graduate and graduate of Holmes Community College. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Pickens Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Lipsey was an elder in his church, a Mason and a Shriner. He served 11 years as chairman of the county ASCS Committee.
Pallbearers included W.L. Lipsey, Spivey Lipsey, Charles Lipsey Owens, Dr. John Robert Ford and Norman Ford.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma Lipsey of Madison, and several nieces and nephews.
