Howard Brewer
JACKSON -- Mr. Howard Brewer, 83, a retired IRS employee, died Sunday, March 7, 1999, of heart failure at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.
Services were held March 10 from First Baptist Church of Madison with the Rev. James Richardson officiating and interment in Parkway Memorial cemetery. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home of Ridgeland handled arrangements.
A Meridian native, Mr. Brewer was a graduate of Meridian High School and the Jackson School of Law. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Air Force with the 44th Air Depot Repair Unit. He served in the Pacific area of Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Madison. He had retired after 33 years with the Internal Revenue Service as a state tax examiner. He had been a resident of Jackson for more than 50 years. He loved hunting, tennis and all sports, those who knew him said.
Pallbearers were Larry Gilbert, Jimmy Murrary, Ray McCullen, Ralph Hamil, Leland Stead and Floyd Lowery.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Alberta Gilbert Brewer of Jackson; and brothers, Frank Brewer and Bill Brewer, both of Meridian, and Jimmy Brewer of Senatobia.
Memorials may be made to the building fund of First Baptist Church of Madison.
Robert Watson Landers
MADISON -- Mr. Robert Watson Landers, 71, a retired furniture salesman, died Thursday, March 4, 1999, of cancer at his home in Madison.
Services were held March 6 at Christ United Methodist Church with Dr. John Case and the Rev. Prentiss Gordon officiating and interment in Oktibbeha Memorial Gardens in Starkville. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home of Ridgeland handled arrangements.
A Helena, Ark., native, Mr. Landers was a former longtime resident of Starkville and had lived in Madison for nearly five years. He was a Helena High School graduate and served in the U.S. Navy in Manila, Philippines, after World War II.
Mr. Landers had attended the University of Arkansas. He and his wife had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, where he worked on Habitat for Humanity projects.
Pallbearers were Wallace Bumpas, Thomas Wasson, Jim Ricks, Bill Robertson, Benton Landers and Nicholas Landers.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Goodloe Landers of Madison; sons, Robert W. Landers Jr. of Starkville and Ben G. Landers of Germantown, Tenn.; daughters, Betsy Landers of Madison and Barbara Salvatore of Gambrills, Md.; and three grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity at Christ United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society, 1380 Livingston Lane, Jackson, MS 39213.
Kelly O'Cain
CANTON -- Kelly O'Cain, 79, a retired parts department employee, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, of heart failure at his home in Canton.
Services were held Saturday at Breeland Funeral Home Chapel in Canton with interment in Forest Grove cemetery.
A Forest Grove native, Mr. O'Cain moved to Canton after graduation from Camden High School. He retired from Harreld Chevrolet after 25 years with the parts department. He was a member of Forest Grove Presbyterian Church and had attended First Baptist Church of Canton for the past 48 years, where he was a member of the Adult 4 Men 2 Sunday School class.
He was a member of the Mississippi Woodworkers Association of Jackson, Pearl River Woodcarvers Association of Byram and National Woodcarvers Association.
Survivors include his wife, Shirlie O'Cain of Canton; son, Gary O'Cain of Jackson; and sister, Ruby Thomas of Jackson.

Dorothy B. Olson
MADISON -- Mrs. Dorothy B. Olson, 81, a retired resident manager, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, of complications due to cancer at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center.
Services were held Friday from the chapel of Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland with Monsignor Noel Foley and the Rev. Buddy Stallings officiating and interment in Lakewood Memorial Park.
A Philadelphia native, Mrs. Olson had been a resident of the Jackson area for 63 years. She was a communicant of St. Richard's Catholic Church. She was employed by the Jacksonian Inn for 30 years and retired as resident manager.
Pallbearers were Bo Allen, David Crews, George Wilkinson, Kent Wilkinson, Shawn Dean and David Robinson.
Survivors include her daughters, Lynn Olson Phillips of Jackson and Mardie Olson Dixon of Madison; sisters, Emma Kate Slay of Hattiesburg and Carrie Douglas of Newton; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Lillie Maude Cain
DURANT -- Lillie Maude Cain, a homemaker, died Thursday, March 11, 1999, of Lou Gehrig's disease at Whispering Pines in Jackson.
Services were held Sunday at New Hope Lutheran Church in Sallis with the Rev. Bob Wolfert officiating and interment in New Hope cemetery. Southern Funeral Home of Durant handled arrangements.
A Sallis native, Mrs. Cain was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Levi Roger Cain, in 1995, and a son, Ray Cain, in 1948.
Pallbearers were Jack Dickerson, J.T. Keen, Herman Schuback, Dale McBride, Leonard Cain and Allen Herman.
Survivors include her son, Glenn Cain of Madison; three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Jason Darrell "Coon" Roberson
FLORA -- Mr. Jason Darrell "Coon" Roberson, 16, a student, died Friday, March 5, 1999, at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson from injuries received in an automobile accident on March 4 on U.S. Highway 49 in Madison County.
Services were held March 8 from the chapel of Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home of Ridgeland with the Rev. Rickey Blythe, Dr. Church Hampton and the Rev. Freddie Allen officiating. Interment followed in the Flora City cemetery.
A Baker, La., native, Mr. Roberson was a junior at Tri-County Academy in Flora. He had been a resident of the town since 1992. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Flora and of the Youth Council. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing and deer hunting, those who knew him said.
Pallbearers were Robbie Blythe, Ken Green, Eric Green, Mark Grogan, Luke Grogan, Dusty Nance, D.J. Powell, Winston White, B.J. Stingley and Garrett Hancock.
Honorary pallbearers were Peyton Dunlap, Clint Lancaster, Toby Trowbridge and Tim Green.
Survivors include his parents, Kenneth and Billie Jo Roberson of Flora; brother, Timothy Quinton Roberson of Flora; paternal grandparents, Bob and Louise Roberson of Greenwood; maternal grandparents, Billy and Lucille Fowler of Lagrange, Ark.; and maternal great-grandmothers, Maggie Bell Brown and Myrtle Fowler, both of Lagrange, Ark.

Virginia Ann Wicks Varner
MADISON -- Virginia Ann Wicks Varner, 90, a former school teacher, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, from heart failure at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center.
Services were held Friday at Christ United Methodist Church in Jackson with interment in Green Acres Memorial Park in Vicksburg.
Mrs. Varner was a former elementary school teacher and homemaker. She was a resident at The Home Place in Madison. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Jackson, where she was an honorary steward.
Mrs. Varner was a 1926 graduate of Georgia State College for Women. She was the widow of the Rev. Henry B. Varner Sr. The couple served numerous pastorates in Mississippi, the last two being with the United Methodist churches of Louise and Edwards.
At Christ United Methodist Church, she was a member of Circle No. 2 of the United Methodist Women, the J.T. Griffith Sunday School class and Joy Group. She was an avid lover of the musical arts and played the piano regularly.
Survivors include her sons, Henry B. Varner Jr. of Cabot, Ark., and Charles E. Varner Sr. of Jackson; daughter, Ann Kent of Greenville; brother, Charles Wicks of Toccoa, Ga.; 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to Table in the Wilderness Ministries, c/o Dale Wahlgren, HC 01 Box 35, Maxwell, NE 69151, established by Mrs. Varner's granddaughter, Kim Varner Tillman, and husband, Dee Tillman, as a Christian camp to encourage youth, young adults and families into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
William D. Freeland
RIDGELAND -- Mr. William D. Freeland, 67, a comptroller, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, of a massive heart attack at St. Dominic-Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Services were held March 2 from the chapel of Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland with the Rev. Bill McAlilly officiating and interment in New Live Oaks cemetery in Selma, Ala.
A Painesville, Ohio, native, Mr. Freeland had been a resident of Ridgeland for 10 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of Korea. He was a member of St. Matthew's United Methodist Church and served as comptroller of Wesley Biblical Seminary.
Survivors include his wife, Charlene Freeland of Ridgeland; son, Scott Freeland of Jackson; daughter, Charla Freeland of Ridgeland; sister, Jo Anne Moore of Painesville, Ohio; and granddaughters, Nichol Freeland of Ridgeland and Melinda Freeland of Dallas, Texas.

Edward L. Lord
CANTON -- Mr. Edward L. Lord, 68, a school principal, died Thursday, March 11, 1999, of a heart attack at the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center.
Services were held Saturday at Wright & Ferguson High Street Chapel in Jackson with interment in Lakewood South cemetery.
A Kosciusko native, Mr. Lord was a former Jackson resident who had lived in Canton for the past seven years. He had served four years in the U.S. Navy.
He was a Mississippi State University graduate who received his master's degree from Mississippi College. He taught math at Peeples Jr. High School and was principal of Wilkins Elementary School for 26 years. He was a member of Leavell United Methodist Church, where he was a Sunday School teacher.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Flanagan Lord of Canton; daughter, Lisa L. Lazzaro of Colorado Springs, Colo.; son, Edward Alan Lord of Lexington, S.C.; four grandchildren, Lee Allyn Lord, Edward Matthew Lord, Alexis Lazzaro and Tommy Lazzaro; and sister, Dorothy Lord Cook of Kosciusko.

Maymie C. Hoy
MADISON -- Mrs. Maymie C. Hoy, 94, a homemaker, died Friday, March 5, 1999, of respiratory failure at St. Catherine's Village in Madison.
Services were held March 6 at Montgomery cemetery in Madison. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home of Ridgeland handled arrangements.
Mrs. Hoy had been a Madison resident for more than 80 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom C. Hoy Sr.
"She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, " said her son.
Survivors include her son, Tom C. Hoy Jr., and his wife, Bonnie B. Hoy, of Baton Rouge, La.; grandchildren, Gail Hoy Unglesby, and husband, Lewis, of Baton Rouge, La., and Tom P. Hoy 3rd, and wife, Gail, of Conroe, Texas; five great-grandsons, Lewis, Lance and Blake Unglesby and Thomas and Graham Hoy; and sister, Julia Pearson of Jackson.
