Melvinia C. Kelly

FLORA -- Melvinia C. Kelly, 91, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, after an illness.

Services were held Saturday at Shady Grove M.B. Church in Flora with the Rev. Daniel Walker officiating. Peoples Funeral Home of Jackson handled arrangements.

born on McDowell Plantation in Flora, she was referred to as "one of those Coleman girls" by their church community. She and her sisters were known in the area for singing and performed hymns throughout the surrounding communities.

She was a lifelong member of Shady Grove M.B. Church, where she was a Sunday School member and frequent church vocalist. Prior to her illness, she was an active member of the Women's Mission, the Hinds, Madison and Adjoining Counties Christian Institute and the Hinds, Madison and Adjoining Counties Usher Association.

Survivors include her children, Thomas J. "T.J." Kelly of Los Angeles, Calif.; Bernice Palmer, Red Foley and John "Bobby Joe" Kelly, all of Jackson, Maxcine Marshall of Queens, N.Y., and Charles E. "Moose" Kelly and Booker T. "Pudding" Kelly, both of Jackson; 32 grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren, 24 great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Donna Hayes

CANTON -- Donna Hayes, 39, a student, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, at the Madison County Medical Center in Canton after a lengthy illness.

Services were held last Wednesday at South Liberty Missionary Baptist Church with interment in the Methodist cemetery. Peoples Undertaking Co. of Canton handled arrangements.

A Canton native, Ms. Hayes was a member of South Liberty M.B. Church. She was a graduate of Holy Child Jesus Catholic School in Canton and attended Xavier University and Delgado University, both in New Orleans, La., receiving an associate of arts degree in 1987.

Survivors include her mother and step-father, Betty and Cleo Hawkins of Canton; sister, Gwen Love of Canton; nieces, Ebony and Mya Love of Canton; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Willie Mae Ethridge Nash

MADISON -- Willie Mae Ethridge Nash, 92, a seamstress, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, of heart failure at the Willard F. Bond Nursing Home in Madison.

Graveside services were held Friday at Friendship cemetery in Columbus with Dr. Bobby Douglas officiating. Gunter & Peel Funeral Home of Columbus handled arrangements.

A Headland, Ala., native, Mrs. Nash was a self-employed seamstress. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Columbus.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis Nash Sr.

Survivors include her sons, William Ellis Nash of Ft. Gibson, Okla., and Thomas Ethridge Nash of Ft. Worth, Texas; daughters, Ruth Daniel of Jackson and Betty Ellege of Kingsport, Tenn.; brother, Dewitt Ethridge of La Habra Heights, Calif.; sisters, Lula Belle Watford of Dothan, Ala., and Ira Lee Watts of Tupelo; 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Francis Secrest Morrison

MADISON -- Francis Secrest Morrison, 68, a hematologist, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, of cancer at his home in Madison.

Services were held Monday at Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Church in Madison with the Rev. John Sewell and the Rev. David Christian officiating and interment in the church cemetery. Mark E. Seepe Funeral Home of Jackson handled arrangements.

A Chicago, Ill., native, Dr. Morrison was an undergraduate of the University of Illinois in Chicago and graduate of Mississippi State University with honors, the University of Mississippi in liberal arts and the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Jackson. In addition to numerous postgraduate studies in hematology, Dr. Morrison attended graduate school at the Massachusetts Institute for Technology in Cambridge, Mass.

Dr. Morrison was formerly associated as an instructor with Tufts University School of Medicine and as a clinical instructor with Boston University School of Medicine in Boston, Mass. During his military service he served as commander in the medical corps with the U.S. Navy in the Naval Blood Research Laboratory in Chelsea, Mass.

Upon his arrival in Mississippi, Dr. Morrison served as attending physician and director of hematology and oncology with the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Jackson. His medical career led him to be an assistant professor of medicine in numerous capacities with the University Medical School. He was a professor of medicine and director of hematology at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and the associate professor of pathology.

He was elected to Phi Kappa Phi, Omnicron Delta Kappa and Sigma Xi. He was a communicant of Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Church in Madison and was a former member of the board of the Mississippi Opera Association and advisory board of the Jackson-Hinds Comprehensive Health Center. He was a charter member of the Friends of the Rowland Medical Library at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. He was a member and past president of the World Aphcresis Association and founding member of the Mississippi Blood Services in Jackson.

Dr. Morrison was a member of the American College of Physicians, American Medical Association, New York Academy of Science, Mississippi Academy of Science, Mississippi State Medical Association and Southern Medical Association.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Daniels Morrison of Madison; sons, Francis S. Morrison Jr. of McKinney, Texas, Thomas Clinton Morrison of Jackson and Kenneth Paul Morrison of Chicago, Ill.; brother, Jean Morrison of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and three grandchildren.

Grace Boyd Davis

CANTON -- Mrs. Grace Boyd Davis, 82, a retired office manager, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, of heart failure at Whispering Pines Hospice in Ridgeland.

Services were held Monday at at Breeland Funeral Home Chapel in Canton with interment in Canton cemetery.

A lifelong Madison County resident, Mrs. Davis was a retired office manager for the Madison County Health Department. She was a former president and member of the Homemakers Club. She was a member of Lone Pine Baptist Church, where she had served as clerk.

She was preceded in death by a son, Charles Ray Davis, in 1992.

Survivors include her husband, Charles E. Davis of Canton; sons, Jimmy D. Davis and Billy Boyd Davis, both of Brandon, and Ronald R. Davis of Canton; daughters, Zella D. Buntyn of Sandhill and Betty Ann Blaine of Madison; brother, Ulrie G. Boyd of Canton; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Q.L. 'Banty' Ray

RIDGELAND -- Q.L. "Banty" Ray, 82, a retired supervisor, died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, of cancer at Whispering Pines Hospice in Ridgeland.

Services were held last Thursday at Weir Methodist Church in Weir with interment in Weir cemetery.

A Weir native, Mr. Ray was a retired businessman, cattle farmer and supervisor for 16 years in Choctaw County. He was a 50-year Master Mason and served on the Weir Town Board. He served as vice president of Choctaw County Farm Bureau Insurance and a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a World War II Army veteran including service in the Aleutian Islands.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Ray of Weir; son, Don Ray of Grenada; daughter, Betty Wycoff of Salt Lake City, Utah; brothers, Ralph Ray of Chipley, Fla., and Jim Ray of Brandon; and grandchildren, Katy and Patrick Ray of Grenada and Andrew Mitchell of Salt Lake City, Utah.

Memorials may be made to Weir Methodist Church.

Danny Rex Gregory

CANTON -- Danny Rex Gregory, 52, an associate state insurance sales director, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, of cancer at River Oaks Hospital in Jackson.

Services were held Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Canton with interment in Ecru cemetery. Breeland Funeral Home of Canton handled arrangements.

An Ecru native, Mr. Gregory was a graduate of Ecru High School and Mississippi State University, where he received his master's degree in physical education. He coached at several high schools, including Philadelphia High School, where his team won the Choctaw Conference in 1974. He was named Coach of the Year by the Choctaw Conference that year.

He became associated with Mississippi Farm Bureau Insurance in 1984 and became associate state sales director in May 1992. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Canton.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Gregory of Canton; son, John Gregory of Starkville; parents, Fred and Robbie Gregory of Ecru; and sister, Peggy Garrett of Tupelo.

Seaborn Dudley 'Dee' Collins, Jr.

JACKSON -- Seaborn Dudley "Dee" Collins Jr., 90, a retired district manager, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, of heart failure at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.

Services were held Monday at the Chapel of Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland with Dr. R. Stewart Smith officiating and interment in Parkway Memorial cemetery.

A Yazoo City native, Mr. Collins was a longtime Jackson resident. He was a member of the Class of 1932 at the University of Mississippi and was past president of the Alumni Athletic M-Club. He was a veteran of World War II, having served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Collins worked as an engineer with the Mississippi State Highway Department before moving into the private sector, where he retired as a district manager with nearly 30 years service with Lone Star Cement Corp.

He was past president of the Eastern Babe Ruth League and was a longtime participant in youth baseball through the Servian Club. He was a former longtime member of Broadmeadow United Methodist Church and a current member of Riverside Independent Methodist Church. He had served on the administrative board and was a former youth Sunday School teacher at Broadmeadow.

An avid Ole Miss sports fan and supporter, Mr. Collins received the Ole Miss Chapter Contribution to Amateur Football Award in 1988.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Maurice Collins.

Pallbearers were Ken Robinson, Tom Harris, Mike Brown and Rick Gamblin.

Survivors include his sons, Homer D. "Chuck" Collins of Jackson and John David Collins of Mobile, Ala.; brother, Harris Collins of Santa Barbara, Calif.; granddaughters, Allison Leigh Collins and Caroline Ann Collins, both of Mobile, Ala.; six nieces and three nephews.

Memorials may be made to Broadmeadow United Methodist Church, 4419 Broadmeadow Drive, Jackson, MS 39206; or Riverside Independent Methodist Church, 835 Riverside Drive, Jackson, MS 39202.

Cora Mead Boyd

CANTON - Mrs. Cora Mead Boyd, 97, a homemaker, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997, of heart failure at Madison County Nursing Home.

Services were held Saturday at Nowell-Flippin Funeral Home in Canton with interment in Canton City cemetery.

Mrs. Boyd was a native of Franklin Corners in Erie County, Penn., but moved to Madison County at the age of 8.

An accomplished musician, Mrs. Boyd was proficient with the piano, organ, guitar and fiddle. She shared her love of music with others, hosting a monthly sing-along at her home.

She was also an accomplished quilter.

She was survived by her nephew, Edward M. Branigin of Canton.

Donald William "Slick" Broyles

DURANT - Donald William "Slick" Broyles, 72, a merchant, bail bondsman and security guard, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, of a stroke at University Hospital in Durant.

Services were held Sunday at Southern Funeral Home of Durant with interment in North Salem cemetery in Browning, Mo.

A Methodist, Mr. Broyles had served in the Army Air Corps in France during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Broyles of Durant; sons, Mike Broyles of Madison and Billy Wayne Broyles and Donald William Broyles Jr., both of Durant; daughters, Barbara Kincaid of Salibbury, N.C., and Henee Breazeale of Durant; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Durant.

Doris Anna DeMauro

JACKSON - Doris Anna DeMauro, 62, an office clerk, died Friday, Oct. 17, 1997, of cancer.

Private graveside services were held Monday at Natchez Trace cemetery. Nowell-Flippin Funeral Home in Ridgeland handled the arrangements.

A native of Paterson, N.J., Mrs. DeMauro had lived in Jackson for the past 25 years and had been employed with Sears for the past 18 years as an office clerk.

Survivors include her son, Robert DeMauro of Holt, Fla.; daughter, Karen Abdeen of Madison; brothers, Ron Roetman, Robert Roetman and Ray Roetman, all of Patterson, N.J.; sisters, Ann Gamble of Brant Lake, N.Y., and Joan Laurie of North Haledon, N.J.; and three grandchildren.
