Katherine Rea

MADISON - Miss Katherine Rea, 77, a retired librarian, died Wednesday Oct. 15, 1997, at St. Catherine's Village of heart failure.

Graveside services were held Monday at the Wesson cemetery in Wesson.

A native of Wesson, Miss Rea lived in Jackson for 38 years before moving to St. Catherine's. She retired from the Jackson Public School System after serving as librarian at Bailey Junior High School for 38 years. She was a member of the Wesson Presbyterian Church.

Survivors are her niece, Emagrace Colley of Independence, Mo.; and two nephews, Edwin Rea of Alpharetta, Ga., and Dr. Robert Rea of Rock Hill, S.C.

The family has asked that memorials be made to French Camp Academy, French Camp, Miss., or to the Wesson Presbyterian Church.

Herman Weiss Mosby

CANTON - Herman Weiss Mosby, 77, a retired businessman, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997, of respiratory failure at his home.

A Mass of Resurrection was celebrated Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Canton. Interment was in Semmes Family cemetery on Mosby Road in Meridian. Breeland Funeral Home handled the arrangements and hosted a Rosary service Friday.

A Meridian native, Mr. Mosby was the son of the late Dr. Charles P. and Mary Elizabeth Semmes Mosby. He was a graduate of St. Aloysius High School in Meridian and attended Mississippi State University until his National Guard unit was mobilized in 1940. After five years in the U.S. Army with service in the European theater of operations, he was honorably discharged in 1945 with the rank of captain of artillery.

Mr. Mosby brought his young family to Canton in 1949 and built Madison County Diaries Inc., Copiah Dairies Inc. in Hazlehurst and Mosby's Dairy in Meadville, distributing Mosby's Superior Milk and other dairy products throughout central Mississippi. He was a former president of the Mississippi Dairy Products Association.

In 1969, Mr. Mosby began to actively manage Superior Tire Recappers Inc., offering service to in-house and off-the-road retain and commercial customers, retiring in 1981.

Mr. Mosby was a faithful communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a former president of the Parish Council. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He also served as a former president of the Canton Chamber of Commerce, the Canton Rotary Club and the American Legion. He was a board member of television station WLBT and of other civic organizations. He also served as a colonel on the staff of former Gov. Ross R. Barnett.

He was preceded in death by a son, Matthew McRae Mosby.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Sue; sons, Herman W. Mosby 2nd and Richard M. Mosby; daughters, Anne Page Mosby of Marietta, Ga., Mary Mosby Manning of Gluckstadt, Elizabeth Mosby Covington of Pass Christian and Martha Mosby Kenahan of Riverside, Ill.; 17 grandchildren; brother, Dr. William H. Mosby of Gretna, La.; sisters, Mrs. George J. Newton Jr. of Meridian and Mrs. Agnes Rand Bullock of Atlanta, Ga.; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Charles P. Mosby Jr. and Mrs. Joseph M. Mosby of Meridian; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, P.O. Box 361, 238 East Center Street, Canton, MS 39046, or Holy Angels School, 10450 Ellerbe Road, Shreveport, LA 71106.

Velma Lee Whitehead

CANTON - Mrs. Velma Lee Whitehead, 68, a seamstress, died Monday, Oct. 13, 1997, of cancer at her home.

Services were held Oct. 15 at Nowell-Flippin Funeral Home in Canton with interment in Jackson cemetery in Canton.

Mrs. Whitehead was a long-time resident of Canton, a member of First Baptist Church and active in Homebound Ministry.

Survivors include her sons, David Whitehead of Denton, Texas, and Kent Whitehead of Canton; daughter, Janie V. Brown of Clinton; brothers, Milton Reid of Canton, L.E. Reid Jr. of Fresno, Calif., and Tommy Reid of Phoenix, Ariz.; sisters, Juanita Vopp of Paducah, Ky., Pat Webster of Shalimar, Fla., and Audrey Stevens and Blanche Boyles, both of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Wesley Wayne Harrell

MADISON -- Wesley Wayne Harrell, 20, a student, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Interstate 55 in Yazoo County.

Services were held Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Madison with Dr. John Temple and the Rev. Mike Hart officiating and interment in Natchez Trace Memorial Park. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home of Ridgeland handled arrangements.

A Madison native and lifelong resident, Mr. Harrell was a 1998 graduate of Madison Central High School, where he played football. He also played Summer League baseball as a pitcher and made several All-Star teams. He was a sophomore at East Mississippi Community College and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Madison and was working for Mack & Vale Electrical Co. of Starkville.

Those who knew him said he loved the outdoors, sports and people, being a hard worker never without a smile.

Pallbearers were Anthony Dickinson, Gary Brown, Todd Riggan, Nathan Rives, Kevin Kimbrough and Richie Drane.

Survivors include his parents, Jackie W. and Gloria P. Harrell of Madison; brothers, Timothy Harrell of Jackson and Anthony Harrell of Byram; paternal grandparents, Lee W. and Beatrice Harrell of Ridgeland; maternal grandparents, Walter and Mary Moulder of Forest and Robert Pleasant of Crystal Springs; and his longtime girlfriend, Courtney Klinger of Ridgeland.

Tommy DeLaughter

JACKSON -- Tommy DeLaughter, 56, a hair salon owner, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, of heart failure at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson.

Services were held Feb. 16 at Rosemont Gardens Funeral Home chapel with interment in Rosemont Gardens cemetery.

A Winser, La., native, Mr. DeLaughter had been a former Natchez resident but had lived in the Jackson area for more than 30 years. He was a Mason and member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Mississippi Barber's Association and former member of the World Championship Hair Styling Team.

Survivors include his son, Michael DeLaughter of Ridgeland; daughters, Lisa Taylor of Byram and Darla Tucker of Nashville, Tenn.; mother, Rosa-Lena DeLaughter of Natchez; sister, Peggie Faye Rushing of Natchez; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Grace House, 236 Millsaps Ave., Jackson, MS 39202; the March of Dimes or the American Heart Association.

Paul Tung Wong

CANTON -- Paul Tung Wong, 71, a grocery store owner, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, of heart failure at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.

Services were held Sunday from the Memorial Park Funeral Home chapel in Memphis, Tenn., with interment in Memorial Park cemetery. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home of Jackson handled local arrangements.

A Canton, China, native, Mr. Wong came to the U.S. in 1951. He served with the U.S. Army in Korea. After his discharge from the service, he lived in California before moving to Canton, Miss., 26 years ago. There, he owned and operated Wong's Grocery Store.

Survivors include his wife, Sheung Foon Wong of Canton; sons, Richard Wong and wife, Debbie, of Cordova, Tenn., and Wayne Wong and Edward Wong, both of Southaven.

Lannis Faver 'Buster' Plummer

CANTON -- Lannis Faver "Buster" Plummer, 69, a retired field representative, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, of heart failure at St. Dominic/Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Services were held Friday from the chapel of Breeland Funeral Home in Canton with interment in Canton cemetery.

A native and lifelong Canton resident, Mr. Plummer was a retired field representative for the Mississippi Chemical Corp. He was a 1953 graduate of Mississippi State University with a degree in business. While at MSU, he was second baseman for the varsity baseball team. He was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity, the Sons of the Confederacy and the Sons of the American Revolution. He was a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his son, James Plummer of Madison; daughters, Lannis Duncan of Laurel and Rhonda Green of Jackson; sister, Mary Alaccee of Erie, Penn.; and 10 grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the MSU Athletic Department, P.O. Box 6149, Miss. State, MS 39762; or the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Mississippi Chapter, 145 Executive Drive, Madison, MS 39110.

Grace Leach Slaton

MADISON -- Grace Leach Slaton, 86, a retired restaurant owner, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, of cancer at The Home Place in Madison.

Services were held Friday at Canton cemetery. Breeland Funeral Home of Canton handled arrangements.

A Holmes County native, Mrs. Slaton had lived in Madison County since 1936. She had been a resident of The Home Place in Madison since 1990. She was the retired owner and operator of The Derby Restaurant and Forest Glen Tea Room in Canton. She was the former food supervisor of the Madison County Nursing Home. She was a member of the Canton Woman's Club. She was a Baptist.

Those who knew her said she enjoyed helping people.

Survivors include her brother, Thomas Leach of Pickens; sister, Dorothy Mason of Madison; grandson, Z. Lane Slaton of Canton; granddaughter, Deidre S. Harris of Canton; and great-granddaughter, Anna Grace Harris of Canton.

Memorials may be made to The Home Place, P.O. Drawer 720, Madison, MS 39130.

Delia 'Dee' Loyacono Pyle

JACKSON -- Delia "Dee" Loyacono Pyle, 53, a swimmer and civic leader, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, from complications from multiple sclerosis at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson.

Services were held Monday at St. Richard Catholic Church with interment in Lakewood cemetery.

A leader in the fight against MS, Mrs. Pyle fought the disease for 24 years before succumbing. She served for several years on the board of directors for the Mississippi Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, also working with them as a counselor helping others cope with the uncertainty of being diagnosed with the disease.

She was one of the founders of Mississippi Blood Services, which today is the primary blood supplier in the state.

A longtime American Red Cross water safety instructor, Mrs. Pyle taught swimming and water safety. She also participated in competitive swimming and in the trials for the U.S. Junior Olympic Team.

Former Gov. Ray Mabus, a longtime friend, said, "Dee Pyle was one of the brightest, sweetest, most wonderful people I have ever known. I remember very clearly, even when her illness confined her to a wheelchair, how she never missed a single event at the mansion or how she was there bringing a glow to anyone that was near her."

Survivors include her husband of 24 years, William A. Pyle of Jackson; son, Jason Boyce Lee of Ridgeland; brothers, Paul Kelly Loyacono of Vicksburg and Bill Loyacono of Hernando; and sisters, Mickey Loyacono of Vicksburg and Frances Loyacono Griffin of Madison.

Memorials may be made to St. Richard Catholic Church (366-2325) or the Mississippi Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (856-7575).

Mable Roberts Grantham

LEXINGTON -- Mable Roberts Grantham, 85, a seamstress, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, of respiratory failure at Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.

Services were held Feb. 23 at Southern Funeral Home chapel in Lexington with the Rev. Gary Reichenbach officiating and interment in Odd Fellows cemetery in Lexington.

A Holmes County native, Mrs. Grantham had attended Holmes Junior College. She was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. She had worked as a seamstress for Henson Kickernick.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard E. Grantham, in 1994.

Pallbearers were Tom Wiley, Andy Wiley, Mike Harthcock, Wayne Ellis, Billy Pemberton and Kevin Harthcock. Honorary pallbearers were Bruce Edwards, David Dillon and Bo Grantham.

Survivors include her son, Howard E. Grantham Jr. of Madison; daughters, Patricia Gillespie of Tchula and Betty Jean Grantham of Greenwood; sister, Ruby Harthcock of Lexington; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to French Camp Academy, One Fine Place, French Camp, MS 39754.

Robert Erwin Cheatham, Jr.

MADISON -- Robert Erwin Cheatham Jr., 82, a retired electrical engineer, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, of heart failure at his home in Madison.

Services were held Saturday at Parkway Memorial cemetery. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland handled arrangements.

A Columbus native, Mr. Cheatham was a longtime Madison County resident. He had worked for 38 years as an electrical engineer for MP&L.

He was a member of Grace Chapel Presbyterian Church, the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, Mississippi Society of Professional Engineers and the Optimist Club.

His wife of 61 years, Mary, said he was the hardest working man she knew and loved his family.

Survivors include his wife, Mary B. Cheatham of Madison; sons, James G. Cheatham of Madison and Robert E. Cheatham 3rd of Ruston, La.; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Grace Presbyterian Church.
