Evans

ISOLA -- Funeral services for Catherine Butler Evans, 50, of Isola, a factory worker, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Christian Valley MB Church, Silver City. She died of heart failure Sept. 29, 2002, at Humphreys County Memorial Hospital, Belzoni. Burial will be in True Vine Cemetery, Belzoni, under the direction of Smith Funeral Home, Belzoni.

Survivors include her husband, John Alfred Evans of Isola; one son, Alfred Fitzgerald Evans of Isola; and one brother, Robert Butler of Belzoni.

Visitation will be Friday from noon to 5 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home chapel, Belzoni. The body will lie in state at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday.

The Rev. Samuel Williams will officiate.

Evans

GREENVILLE -- Funeral services for Manuel McKinley Evans, 32, of Greenville, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, Greenville. He died Sept. 24, 2002, at Mississippi Firefighters Memorial Burn Center, Greenville. Burial will be in Delta Memorial Gardens, Greenville, under the direction of Byas Funeral Home, Greenville.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Michael Evans, Derrick Evans and Maurice Evans; and one aunt, Francine Austin.

Survivors include his mother, Blanche Evans of Greenville; his fiancˇ, Ann Cannon of Greenville; his grandmother, Earnestine Taylor of Detroit; four sisters, Ruth Michelle Love and Veronica Petic, both of Detroit, Patricia Evans of Florida and Freda Lynn Claus of North Carolina; two brothers, Thomas Avery of Detroit and Louis Avery of Jackson; two uncles, Harold Dorris and Early Dorris Jr., both of Detroit; and three aunts, Catherine Bates and Carol Turner, both of Detroit, and Janie of West Memphis, Ark.

Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 6 p.m. at Byas Funeral Home, Greenville.

The Rev. A.M. Hines is pastor. The Rev. Jessie Smith will officiate.

Foster

BELZONI -- Funeral services for Lewis James Foster, 43, of Belzoni, a factory worker, will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Green Grove MB Church, Belzoni. He died of heart failure Oct. 1, 2002, at his home. Burial will be in Green Grove Cemetery under the direction of Smith Funeral Home, Belzoni.

Survivors include one son, Lamarlon J. Woodard of Fondulac, Wis.; his mother, Beatrice Foster of Belzoni; three brothers, Larry Foster and Robert Foster, both of Belzoni, and Frederick Foster of Chicago; and three sisters, Gail F. Hood of Belzoni, Myrtis L. Foster of Enfield, Conn., and Jackqueline F. Eady of Springfield, Mass.

Visitation will be Saturday from noon to 5 p.m., with a wake from 6 to 7 p.m., at Smith Funeral Home chapel, Belzoni. Church visitation will be Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Green Grove MB Church.

Pastor Morris Allen will officiate.

Harbin

GREENWOOD -- Funeral services for Pecola Tiney Harbin, 68, of Friendswood, Texas, and formerly of Greenville will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Greater Springfield Baptist Church, Greenville. She died Oct. 1, 2002, at Memorial Herman Continuing Care Center, Houston, Texas. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery, Greenville, under the direction of Redmon Funeral Home, Greenville.

She was preceded in death by her son, Carl Harbin; and her father, Shelvie Tiney Sr.

Survivors include one daughter, Dianne Harbin Gamble of Texas; four sons, Elzie (Julie) Harbin, Charles Harbin and Jerry (Juanita) Harbin, all of Texas, and David Lee Harbin of Mississippi; her mother, Ella Mae Tiney of Greenville; eight sisters, Clara M. Washington, Eloise Johnson and Corean Shaffer, all of Greenville, Kattie B. Hicks of Michigan, Ind., Emma Lee Johnson of Okolona, Miss., and Martha Griffin, Brillie Mae Tiney Davis and Alice Marie Carter, all of Texas; three brothers, Sammie Tiney of Texas, and L.A. Tiney and Shelvie Tiney Jr., both of Greenville; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be Friday from 1 to 7 p.m., with family hour from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Redmon Funeral Home chapel, Greenville.

Pastor Charles E. Bass will officiate.

Humphrey

GREENVILLE -- Funeral services for Evans Humphrey Jr., 85, of Greenville will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Redmon Funeral Home chapel, Greenville. He died Sept. 28, 2002, at Delta Regional Medical Center, Greenville. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery, Greenville.

Evans Humphrey Jr. was born March 15, 1917, to the union of Evans Humphrey Sr. and Willie Ann Banks (both preceded him in death), in Greenwood, Miss. In 1941, Evans was united in holy matrimony to Julia Grubbs. In 1944, they moved to Chicago, Ill., where they began a new life. Shortly after the move, Evans enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Fort Bliss, Texas. He served his country as a lineman. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He received a Good Conduct and World War II Victory Medal. He was employed as a laborer with the U.S. Steel Mill for 20 years. He then was employed with International Multifoods of Melrose Park, Ill., where he was a diligent worker until his wife became ill. In 1982, Evans retired so that he could care for his wife. In 1983, Evans accepted Christ, was baptized and attended Lilydale MB Church of Chicago. After 43 years of marriage, he was preceded in death by Julia in 1984. Evans spent most of his retired years in Chicago, Ill. However, he vowed that he would spend his last years in the South. Evans followed his heart and relocated to Greenville, Miss., in 1994. He resided in Greenville until he made his transition on Sept. 28, 2002, at 8:58 a.m.

Evans leaves to cherish his memories three sons, Michael (Linda) Turner, Derrick (Tammie) Williams and Ramone Williams, all of Chicago; one sister, Victoria Rouse of Chicago; three brothers, Sam Humphrey of South Bend, Ind., and John Williams and Percy Smith, both of Greenville; two close friends, Catherine Burnette of Greenville and Leona Mitchell of Chicago; three grandchildren, Chantel and Brien Hannah of Chicago and Cantrel Hope of Greenville; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

Visitation will be Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. at Redmon Funeral Home chapel, Greenville.

Pastor James Moore will officiate.

Jones

CLEVELAND -- Funeral services for Melba Regeina Bishop Jones, 72, of Cleveland will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Dockery Baptist Church, Cleveland. She died Sept. 30, 2002, at her home. Burial will be in Lehrton Cemetery, Ruleville, under the direction of Ray Funeral Home, Cleveland.

Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

The Rev. Ray Bridges and the Rev. Artie Nute will officiate.

Maiten

GREENVILLE -- Funeral services for Florence Maiten, 73, of Kingsland, Ga., and formerly of Greenville will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Greater Pleasant Green MB Church, Greenville. She died Sept. 28, 2002, at St. Vincent Hospital, Jacksonville, Fla. Burial will be in Delta Memorial Gardens, Greenville, under the direction of Redmon Funeral Home, Greenville.

Mother Florence Maiten was born Dec. 12, 1928, in Scott, Miss., to the late Rev. Daniel Walter and Dora Lee Maiten. She confessed a hope in Christ at the age of 12 and joined Silver Mount Baptist Church, where she sang in the church choir to the glory of God. She was blessed by the Holy Spirit with a mighty voice and heart for the ministry. She carried the mantle of evangelist, witnessing to lost souls wherever she went. In 1983, she received her ordination as a minister of the Gospel. She was preceded in death by a son; three sisters; and four brothers.

In 1994, she relocated to Kingsland, Ga., where she joined with Evergreen MB Church. She remained a member until she was reunited with her Savior. She spent her life lovingly raising five children, whom she is survived by: Doristeen (Mack) Currh of Wichita, Kan., Earnestine Wright and Linda Lott, both of Detroit, Brenda (James) Hicks of Kingsland, Ga., and Robert L. (Rose) Maiten of Greenwood; three sisters, Margie Pullum of Chicago, Dorothy Blackwell of Detroit and Barbara Williams of Greenville; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other sorrowing relatives and devoted friends.

Visitation will be Friday from 1 to 5 p.m., with family hour from 6 to 7 p.m., at Redmon Funeral Home chapel, Greenville.

The Rev. B.T. Benson is pastor of the church. Pastor Leon Washington of Evergreen MB Church, Kingsland, Ga., will officiate.

Mell

GREENVILLE -- Funeral arrangements for Georgia Ann Mell, 81, of Greenville are pending at Redmon Funeral Home, Greenville. She died Oct. 1, 2002, at Methodist Central Hospital, Memphis.

Smith

BELZONI -- Funeral services for Raymond "Bull" Smith, 40, of Belzoni, a farmer, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Zion Traveler MB Church, Belzoni. He died of heart failure Sept. 27, 2002, at Greenwood Leflore Hospital, Greenwood. Burial will be in Zion Traveler MB Church Cemetery under the direction of Smith Funeral Home, Belzoni.

Survivors include two sons, Christopher Irving and Sammie Irving, both of Pittsburgh, Pa.; one daughter, Latasha Irving of Pittsburgh, Pa.; three brothers, Sylvester Smith of Belzoni, Jimmie Abrons of Hollywood, Fla., and Berry Smith of Itta Bena; and three sisters, Deloise Smith of Columbus, S.C., Dessie Smith of Isola and Mary Yarbor of Belzoni.

Visitation will be Friday from noon to 5 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home chapel, Belzoni.

The Rev. T.P. Rush will officiate.

Thomas

GREENVILLE -- Funeral services for Mary L. Thomas, 96, of Greenville will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. James AME Church, Leland. She died Sept. 30, 2002, at Delta Regional Medical Center, Greenville, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Burial will be in Holly Ridge Cemetery under the direction of Dillon Funeral Home, Leland.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Tyree Thomas.

Mrs. Thomas was a devoted member of St. James AME Church for many years. There she served as president of the ushers board. Mrs. Thomas had been a missionary of her church and in the community all her adult life.

During her working years, she was a beautician and farmed alongside her husband. Farming was an occupation she loved. She also was an expert gardener. Her vegetable garden lived when everyone else's died. She loved the feel of the soil in her hands.

Survivors include one devoted daughter, Talveta Thomas of Greenville; one sister, Elmira Young of Saginaw, Mich.; one brother, L.C. Sanders of San Francisco; and a host of nieces, nephews cousins, friends and other relatives. She also leaves a special friend, Pernella Sanders.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday at Dillon Funeral Home, Leland. The body will lie in state at the church Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Rev. Walter Wilson, presiding elder, will officiate.

Tisdell

INDIANOLA -- Funeral services for Pearl Whitten Tisdell, 79, of Indianola, a homemaker, will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Card Funeral Home, Indianola. She died of heart failure Oct. 1, 2002, at North Sunflower County Hospital, Ruleville. Burial will be in Linn Baptist Cemetery.

She was a member of Roundaway Baptist Church, and was the widow of Woodrow Tisdell.

Survivors include three daughters, Sharon Tisdell Bowyer of Houston, Texas, Linda Tisdell Braswell of Cleveland and Laura Tisdell McLean of Indianola; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Card Funeral Home, Indianola.
