Willie James Laird
Retired Staff Sgt. Willie James Laird, 65, of Waterford, died June 11, 2006 in Arkansas. He was infantry unit leader in the Marine Corps and a Marine veteran of Vietnam. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on June 14 at Bethlehem Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Bro. Steve Wilson officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Joyce Laird; two sons, Randal James Laird of Southaven, Jimmy Rines of Lake Cormorant; three daughters, Deborah Gail Buchanan of Olive Branch, Rachel Baldwyn, Rebecca Verrell, both of New Albany; three sisters, Elsie Louise Maners of Henning, Tenn., Norma Jean Laird of Ripley, Tenn., Evelyn Pierce of Memphis, Tenn.; and 11 grandchildren.
Carol O’Roark McDermott
Carol O’Roark McDermott, 65, of Byhalia, formerly of Marked Tree, Ark., died June 8 at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis. She was a member of Bellevue Baptist Church.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on June 12 in Marked Tree cemetery. Jerry Benya officiated. Murphy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves her husband, John McDermott; a son, Frank McDermott of Byhalia; a daughter, Lea Shannon Kelley of Southaven; her mother, Florine O’Roark of Maumelle; a sister, Nancy Wier of Maumelle; and five grandchildren.
Casey Rhea
Casey Rhea, 83, of Holly Springs, died June 8, 2006 at Trinity Missions Health and Rehab in Holly Springs. He was the widower of Gladys Rhea. He was a Baptist, a factory worker with Clipper Abrasives and an Army veteran of World War II.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on June 11 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery. Bro. Frank Feathers officiated.
He leaves three sons, Casey Rhea Jr. of Southaven, Danny Rhea of Potts Camp, Bobby Rhea of Nashville, Tenn.; a daughter, Brenda Anderson of Holly Springs; a brother, J.R. Rhea of Texas; two sisters, Margaret Hollifield of Byhalia, Elsie Thompson of Blue Mountain; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Doris Shaw Smith
Doris Shaw Smith, 82, of Holly Springs, died June 10, 2006 at her home. She was the widow of Kenneth S. Smith, her husband of 50 years who was a former sheriff of Marshall County. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on June 12 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery. Bro. Curtis Ferrell officiated.
She leaves a son, Kenneth Shawn Smith of Holly Springs; two daughters, Dottie Smith Wilson of Memphis, Tenn., Sherry Smith Reed of Cordova, Tenn.; a sister, Jessie Davis of Holly Springs; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Sidney Shaw and John Shaw.
Johnnie H. Taylor
Johnnie H. Taylor, 86, of Collierville, Tenn., died June 2, 2006 at Methodist Hospital, Germantown, Tenn. She was employed with Wonder Products Co. in production, a member of Amaziah Baptist Church and formerly a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Slayden.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on June 4 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in McKay cemetery in Hickory Flat. Bro. Billy Adair and Bro. Jason Howell officiated.
She leaves two daughters, Eleanor Craft of Moscow, Tenn., Norma Drew of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother, Billy Hampton of Collierville, Tenn.; two sisters, Ruth Hailey of Gulfport, Doris Arrowood of Memphis, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son John Taylor Jr.
Pallbearers were Jerry Rhea, Greg Taylor, Ronnie Siler, Teddy Rooker, David Burks, Jacky Humphrey.
Rev. Reuben Pegues
Rev. Reuben Pegues, 57, of Holly Springs, died June 26, 2006 at Baptist DeSoto Hospital in Southaven. A former member of Hopewell MB Church, he later joined St. Joseph Catholic Church, until he began his own ministry, the Holly Springs Christian Center Church. He was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School; earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Rust College in 1968 and earned a master’s degree in community guidance and counseling from the University of Mississippi in 1979. He served his community in many capacities, including the Neighborhood Youth Core Management, 1964-1968; Marshall County Hospital Assistant, 1968-1972; acquistion and relocation officer for Urban Renewal Agency, 1972-1981; and as the executive director of the Community Development program for the city of Holly Springs from 1981-2006. He secured several important grants for the city, including a $300,000 grant from HUD to construct the presently named Days Inn Hotel; a $100,000 grant to construct a walking trail from MS Wildlife and Outdoor Recreation Department; a $245,000 grant for drainage in the Meadows Subdivision; a $500,000 grant from HUD to resurface College Avenue and renovate houses and a $500,000 grant to assist local families with employment training. Rev. Pegues preached his last sermon from the pulpit of the church he founded in 1993, while sitting in a chair on June 4, 2006.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on July 1 at the Rust College Doxey Building. Visitation will be June 30, 12 noon until 5 p.m. with a wake from 5-6 p.m. at Serenity Funeral Home of Holly Springs. Burial will be in Cottrell cemetery.
He leaves his wife, Vivian A. Pegues; a daughter, Tomeeka Domal Pegues of Holly Springs; his father, Ceacer Pegues of Atlanta, Ga.; three brothers, Ceacer Pegues Jr. of Memphis, Tenn., Clarence Moore, Clinton Moore, both of Holly Springs; a sister, Mary Pegues of Las Vegas, Nev.; and two grandchildren, Trevian and Taylor of Holly Springs.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Johnnie Pegues.
James Irving Adams
James Irving Adams, 73, of Holly Springs, died June 18, 2006 at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, Ala. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a Mason and a retired educator.
Services were held at 1 p.m., June 23 at Anderson Chapel Church in Holly Springs, where he was a member. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Garden. Rev. Charles Webster officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Dr. Ruthie Mae Adams; two daughters, Janice Munsel Adams of Houston, Tx., Mary Helene Vaughn of Louisville, Ky.; two sons, Merrill Jerome Adams of Willingboro, N.J., James Cedric Adams of Florence, Ala.; three sisters, Estelle Byers of Holly Springs, Dorothy Adams of Dallas, Tx., Clara Ford of Memphis, Tenn.; two brothers, Bernard Adams of Cleveland, Ohio, Oscar Adams of Memphis, Tenn.; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Harold Adams; and a sister, Arverna Adams.
Pallbearers were his grandsons and nephews. Honorary pallbearers were his brothers and brothers-in-law, Mr. Wallace Longest and Dr. Paul Lampley.
Bobby Arnold Bennett
Bobby Arnold Bennett, 51, of Potts Camp, died June 20, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in New Albany. He was owner and contractor of Accurate Roofing Co.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on June 22 at Bethany Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial was in Bennett Family cemetery in Potts Camp. Bro. Donald Worsham and Bro. Larry West officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Connie Sandling Bennett; two daughters, Stephanie Newman, Melissa Robinson, both of Potts Camp; two brothers, Ronnie Joe Bennett of Potts Camp, Eddy Bennett of Ashland; three sisters, Patsy Jackson of Nashville, Tenn., Maxine King of Ashland City, Tenn., Rose Courson of Hickory Flat; and three grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Donnal Ash, Art Humphreys, Bobby Greer, Brad Smith, Dwight Smith, Neil Bennett, Sandy Byrd Jr. and Benton Ash.
George Reddick Duncan
George (Sam) Reddick Duncan, 42, of Holly Springs, died June 16, 2006 at Alliance Health Care.
Services were held at 12 noon on June 23 at Pleasant Grove Church. Rev. S.A. Phillips, pastor, officiated. Burial was in Pleasant Grove cemetery. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves two brothers, Stanley Wayne Duncan, Charles E. Duncan Sr., both of Holly Springs; three sisters, Deloris Duncan Jackson of Memphis, Tenn., Willie Eva Duncan, Lula B. Duncan, both of Holly Springs.
Roosevelt Echols
Roosevelt (Buck) Echols, 63, of Holly Springs, died June 18, 2006 at his home. He was a member of Adolphus Chapel CME Church in Holly Springs and a retired laborer from U.S. Postal Services.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on June 24 at Elam Chapel Rust College. Burial was in Strickland United Methodist Church cemetery in Byhalia. Rev. Billy Williams officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his mother, Janie Stewart Echols of Holly Springs; five sisters, Annie Jones, Thelma Martin, both of Holly Springs, Mary Echols, Iolia Rayford, Dorothy Echols, all of Aurora, Ill.; five brothers, R.J. Echols of Syracuse, N.Y., Bobby Echols of Memphis, Tenn., John Wesley Echols of Sacramento, Calif., John Herbert Echols, Morris Echols, both of Holly Springs.

Douglas L. Farrow
Douglas L. (Junior) Farrow, 35, of Memphis, Tenn., died June 16, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He was a member of the church choir, a youth basketball coach for Trinity Belivers Basketball Team, and office manager with Jackson, Person and Associate architect firm.
Services were held at 12 noon on June 22 at Trinity All Nations MB Church in Memphis, where he was a member and associate minister. Burial was in New Park cemetery in Memphis. Rev. Theodis Cochran officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his mother, Freddie M. Norwood Farrow of Memphis; his grandmother, Nelese Norwood of Memphis; two brothers, Gregg Farrow, Alonzo Farrow, both of Memphis; and a godsister, Renea Wicks of Memphis;

Richard Hayes Earnest
Richard (Buddy) Hayes Earnest, 71, of Collierville, died June 25, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis. He was the widower of Laverne Earnest. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years and two days of service; he was a Mason and a member of the V.F.W.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on June 30. Burial will be at West Tennessee Veterans cemetery.
He leaves a son, Robert Earl Earnest; two daughters, Jeannie Earnest Umberger, Anita Earnest Merrell; a brother, Wayne (Fuzz) Earnest; three sisters, Faye Carter, Betty Harris, Jerry Miller; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Charlie Earnest; and a grandson, Jeremy Bradley Morris.
Edwin Murray Hardin
Edwin Murray Hardin, 69, of Mt. Pleasant, died June 25, 2006 at Methodist Hospital, Germantown, Tenn. He was a Presbyterian and an accountant with A.T. Distribution of Memphis.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on June 27 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant cemetery. Bro. Eddie Holmes officiated.
He leaves his wife, Dorothy Hardin; two sons, William E. Hardin of Scooba, Christopher Shane Thompson of Olive Branch; and two grandchildren.

Judith Ann Holshouser
Judith Ann Holshouser, 56, of Potts Camp, died June 20, 2006 at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. She was a Presbyterian and a florist.

She leaves a son, Johnny Stetson of Raleigh, N.C.; three daughters, Sarah Goode of Hickory Flat, Beth Cooke of Arden, N.C., Shelly Silva of Potts Camp; her mother, Elizabeth Plomley of Hollywood, Fla.; two sisters, Elizabeth (Buff) Combs of Canada, Kathy Sharpe of Davie, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.
