Lealer Staves, 94, of Holly Springs, died Oct. 9, 2005 at Quince Nursing Home in Memphis, Tenn.

Services were held at 12 noon on Oct. 15 at Mt. Gilliam Missionary Baptist Church in Memphis, Tenn., where she was a member. Burial was in New Park cemetery in Memphis. Rev. Bobby Baker officiated. M.J. Edwards Home Inc. in Memphis was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves a daughter, Etta Hunt of Memphis; eight grandchildren, Bobby White, Marvin White, Lawrence White of Holly Springs, Gloria Reed, Alberta White, O’Neal Jones, Odell Jones, Doris Shipp; 30 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Mae White.

Pallbearers were grandsons and cousins.

Mary Lee Barker
Mary Lee Barker, 94, of Potts Camp, died Oct. 3, 2005 at DeSoto Health Care. She was the widow of Roy E. Barker and a member of Chewalla Primitive Baptist Church.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Oct. 5 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Chewalla cemetery in Potts Camp. Elder Grady Camp officiated.

She leaves six nephews, Freddie Hankins of Moulton, Ala., Jimmy Ash of Waterford, Donnal Ash of Potts Camp, Benny Mayer of Olive Branch, Kenneth Ash of Oxford, Pat Cox of Pearl; three nieces, Sue Cox of Olive Branch, Joy Cox Potts of Corinth, Jean Cox Fant of Holly Springs; and 18 great-nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were nephews and great-nephews. Honorary pallbearers were Roger Cox, Kent Bumpas, Tilden Ash and Jimmy Gurley.

Calvin Coolidge Lewis

Funeral arrangements for Calvin Coolidge Lewis, 66, of Woodville, who died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at his residence, are incomplete at Webb Funeral Home.

Maurice Rowan Sr.

Nov. 13, 1926 - Jan. 18, 2003

NATCHEZ - Services for Maurice Rowan Sr., 76, of Natchez, who died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at Natchez Regional Medical Center, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Hill No. 1 Baptist Church with Pastor Joe Pickett officiating.

Burial will be in the Natchez National cemetery under the direction of George F. West Funeral Home.

The procession will leave at 10:20 a.m. Saturday from 1152 Martin Luther King Jr. St.

Visitation is from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Rowan was born icon Nov. 13, 1926, in Adams County, the son of Ethel Childs and William Rowan.

He was a graduate of Brumfield High, went to Natchez Community College for two years and Alcorn State for two years. He was a retired letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service and a Baptist.

Survivors include five sons, Maurice Rowan Jr., Cornell Rowan and John Rowan, all of Atlanta, Kenneth Rowan of Jackson and Larry Hauer of Natchez; one daughter, Gail Rowan-Johnson; three daughters-in-law, Betty Norwood-Rowan of Jackson, Shewanda Mock-Rowan of Atlanta and Maureen Hauer of Natchez; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Maurice Johnson of Atlanta.

Pallbearers will be friends of the family.

Honorary pallbearers will be sons and son-in-law.

John Lee Newsom

April 5, 1919 - Jan. 20, 2003

NATCHEZ - Services for John Lee Newsom, 83, of Natchez, who died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Natchez Regional Medical Center, was held at 10 a.m. Nov. 23 at Laird Funeral Home Union Street Chapel where Lawrence Newsom and David Dollar officiated.

Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Mr. Newsom was born icon April 5, 1919, in Forman, Ark., the son of Harry Edgar and Eula McCormack Newsom.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a veteran of World War II and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Service Award.

Survivors include his wife, Josie Goodson Newson of Natchez; one son, Lawrence "Eddie" Newsom of Natchez; daughter-in-law, Brenda Hodges; six grandchildren, Mark Mizell, Coby Sumrall, Joseph Newsom, Christina Newsom, Timothy Newsom and Ashley Newsom; one great-grandchild, Shane Pyron.

Pallbearers were Tom Young, Earl Draine, R.L. Dodges, Dr. Gerald Nickerson, Spruce Durden and Lawrence Newsom.

Dr. Keith R. Miller

Nov. 17, 1920 - Jan. 21, 2003

WOODVILLE - Services for Dr. Keith R. Miller, 82, of Centreville formerly of Woodville, who died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Field Memorial Community Hospital in Centreville, will be at 2 p.m. today at Woodville United Methodist Church with the Revs. Ray Branch, Robert Armstrong and Johnnie Neal officiating.

Burial will be in Roseland cemetery in Gloster under the direction of Berryhill Funeral Home.

Dr. Miller was born icon Nov. 17, 1920, in Chandler, Okla., the son of the Rev. Harry W. Miller and Helen Miriam Rice.

He was a retired dentist and a member of Woodville United Methodist Church.

Dr. Miller was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Adair Miller and his parents.

Survivors include two sons, Keith A. Miller of Vaiden and David R. Miller of Woodville; three daughters, Cynthia M. Calvert of Woodville, Gail M. Armstrong of Vicksburg and Megan M. Neal of Winter Garden, Fla.; one sister, Carolyn M. Knapp of The Keys, Fla.; one brother, Dr. Ross H. Miller of Rochester, Minn.; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Steven Seal, Andy Lewis, Kevin Smith, Wettlin Treppendahl, Bethany Armstrong, Keith Calvert and Win Calvert.

Honorary pallbearers will be J.M. Sessions III, Dr. Mark Stanley and former members of Boy Scouts Troop No. 154.

Patrick Parnell Burns Sr.

Dec. 28, 1911 - Jan. 22, 2003

NATCHEZ - Services for Patrick Parnell Burns Sr., 91, of Natchez, who died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at his residence, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary Basilica with the Revs. Alfred Camp and Mike O'Brien officiating.

Burial will be in the Natchez City cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. with a Rosary service at 7 p.m. today and from noon until service time Saturday at the church.

Mr. Burns was born icon Dec. 28, 1911, in Natchez, the son of Francis Parnell and Honora Grady Burns.

He was a graduate of Cathedral School, serving as president of his senior class, graduated from The University of Notre Dame in 1933 and was president of the LA-MISS Club while attending Notre Dame. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a first lieutenant in the Signal Corp. After his military service, he worked for Geisenberger-Friedler Dry Goods and in 1946 when he joined Simon-Mayer Insurance where he late became owner. He established the firm Burns-Hicks Insurance Agency and was an active partner with Byrne-Burns-Hicks Insurance until his death. Mr. Burns was a member of the Mississippi Independent Insurance Agents Association and served on the Board of Directors.

Mr. Burns was a lifelong member of St. Mary Basilica, where he served on the Finance Committee and Parish Council, was a charter member of the Catholic Foundation and served on the Board of Devereaux Hall Orphanage. He was a Fourth-Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus, served as the secretary-treasurer for the Natchez Little Theatre at its conception and was a member and commander of the American Legion, also Chef Degare of the 40 and 8. He served on the Selective Service Board of Adams County for 23 years, was chairman of the Recreation Council and Safety Council for Natchez and Adams County and served on the founding Board of Trustees for the then Jefferson Davis Memorial Hospital. He was a life time member of Pilgrimage Garden Club, was a member of the Downtown Eola-Radisson Coffee Club, the Elks Lodge, the Natchez Historic Foundation, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Krewe of Kilarney and was honored by being chosen as St. Patrick No. 2. He also served as Grand Marshal in the Lake St. John Flotilla. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club of the Natchez Trace.

Mr. Burns was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Profilet Burns; two brothers, Anthony Burns and Andrew Burns; two sisters, Noreen Aubic and Mary Agnes Frye.

Survivors include his children, Julie B. Riley and Pat Burns and his wife, Connie, all of Natchez, Margaret Humble and her husband, Tommy, both of Baton Rouge, Catherine Spence and her husband, Bill, both of Destin, Fla., Noreen Pyron of Natchez, Billy Abbott and his wife, Debbie, both of Monroe, La., Andy Burns and his wife, Helen, Frances Cothren and her husband, David and Jane Bush and her husband, Kenny, all of Natchez; grandchildren, Jimmy Riley, Patrick Riley, Alyce R. Reames, Nathan Burns, Eric Burns, Grady Humble, Lance Spence, Ryan Spence, Derek Pyron, Phebe P. Martin, Christine Burns, Drew Burns, Maggie Burns, Amy Abbott, Gina Abbott, Kerri Abbott, Claire Cothren, Emily Cothren, Steven Bush and Lindsey Bush; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Burns and Ann Elizabeth Garrity; one brother, Peter T. Burns Sr. and his wife, Therese; one sister-in-law, Alice Burns, all of Natchez; and a number of nieces and nephews; long time housekeeper, Patricia Hawkins.

Pallbearers will be his nephews, Paul Burns, John Burns, Peter Burns, David Burns, Parnell Burns, Conway Aubic, Tim Burns, Joe Garrity and Byron Garrity.

The family requests memorials be made to Burns-Grady Trust Benefiting Cathedral School at 107 South Union Street, Natchez, MS 39120 or a charity of your choice.

Darnell Jackson

Nov. 20, 1959 - Jan. 19, 2003

FAYETTE - Services for Darnell Jackson, 43, of Atlanta formerly of Fayette, who died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hollywood Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. E.E. Colenburg Sr. officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of Spencer Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 1 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Jackson was born icon Nov. 20, 1959, in Jefferson County, the son of Issac and Louise Wilson Jackson.

He was a member of Hollywood Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Nicole Jackson of Huntsville, Ala.; step-father, Charlie Ellis Sr. of Fayette; five brothers, Issac Jackson and his wife, Betty, both of Fayette, Frank E. Jackson and his wife, Geraldine, both of Gretna, La., Joseph Jackson and his wife, Sarah and Kennedy Jackson, all of Fayette and Wardell Jackson and his wife, Valerie, both of Madison; friend, Shirley Perdue of Atlanta; three uncles, Windell Jackson and his wife, Roselle, both of Chicago, James Perry Wilson and his wife, Louise, both of Tampa, Fla. and Cornelius Wilson of Pahokee, Fla.; four aunts, Carlee Jackson of Vicksburg, Katie Tucker and her husband, Willie and Gertrude Furnace, all of Fayette and Claudia Mae Hanna of Pahokee, Fla.; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be Lamar Anderson, Maurice Hudson, Johnny R. Jackson, Tyrone Pierce, Clarence Coleman, Trent Hudson, Carl Pierce and Dudley Rankin.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Jefferson County High School Class of 1977.

Catrina Roshea Allen

March 7, 1975 - Jan. 15, 2003

NATCHEZ - Services for Catrina Roshea Allen, 27, of Natchez, who died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, at South Fulton Memorial Hospital, will be at noon today at Forest Aide Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Green officiating.

Burial will be in Pinehill cemetery under the direction of George F. West Funeral Home.

Ms. Allen was born icon March 7, 1975, in Adams County, the daughter of Gregory and Freda Allen.

She was a graduate of Natchez High School, was employed with Photocircuits, Inc. in Union City, Ga. and was a Baptist.

Survivors include her parents, Gregory and Freda Allen; one brother, Chris A. Madison; one half-sister, Talia Willis; grandmother, Rosetta Dottery; nine aunts, Francis Toles, Marqie Toles, Chrisceda Allen and Charlene Guido and her husband, TK, all of Chicago, Evelyn Brooks and her husband, James, Gladys Madison, Olivia Tilley and Christine Thompson and her husband, Allen, all of Natchez and Sherry Ford and her husband, Esaw, both of Minneapolis, Minn.; three uncles, Willard Madison, Fredrick Allen and Jerry Allen, all of Natchez; three nieces and two nephews; friend, Marshal Ford of Union City, Ga.; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be George Minor, Marcus Shaw, Joseph Blanton and Henry Washington.
