Nyla Forbes Moore

Nyla Forbes Moore, 86, of Holly Springs, died Nov. 14, 2006 at Baptist Hospital in Memphis. She was the widow of Carlisle Moore and a member of First United Methodist Church in Holly Springs, where she formerly served as church secretary. She was a retired secretary of the Marshall County Extension Service, a member of the Friday Night Bunch, Friends of the Marshall County Library, Thursday Club, United Methodist Women, Holly Springs Garden Club and several bridge clubs.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Nov. 16 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Bruce McMillan officiated. Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery.

She leaves a son, Michael C. Moore of Lomita, Calif.; two daughters, Jean Moore Ashmore of Jackson, Tenn., Janis Moore Green of Byhalia; a grandson and a great-granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to the Marshall County Library, 109 Gholson Ave.; Holly Springs First United Methodist Church or the charity of donor’s choice.

Leon Daniel Schmidt

Leon Daniel (Danny) Schmidt, 35, of Memphis, Tenn., died Nov. 15, 2006 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital St. Louis, Mo. He was a security guard with Imperial Security.

Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. on Nov. 20 at Memorial Park cemetery, “Holly Hill” section in Memphis, Tenn. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his mother, Linda M. Schmidt of Memphis, Tenn.; his father, Albert T. Schmidt of Olive Branch; his stepmother, Carolyn Schmidt of Olive Branch; and his grandparents, Jacque and Bill McQuary of Memphis, Tenn.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hope Lodge in St. Louis or the American Cancer Society.

Harley J. Walker Jr.

Harley J. Walker Jr., 75, of Collierville, Tenn., died Nov. 13, 2006 at Collierville Baptist Hospital. He was a member of Collierville First Baptist Church, a ham radio operator, Air National Guard, Civil Service, and an Air Force veteran of Korea.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 16 at Ashland First Baptist Church. Burial was in the Ashland cemetery. Bro. Joe Smith officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Melba Lee Walker; two sons, Gordon D. Walker of San Antonio, Tx., Scott A. Walker of Southaven; and seven granddaughters.

Pallbearers were Charles Akin, Nick Akin, Vernon Stroupe, Rodney Stroupe, Richie Savage and Ernest J. Ortiz Jr.

Memorials may be sent to the First Baptist Church of Collierville building fund and to the Ashland First Baptist Church.

Robert Bryan Dismuke

Robert (Bobby) Bryan Dismuke, 49, of Holly Springs, died Nov. 5, 2006 in Tupelo. He was a Baptist and a forklift operator with Mohasco.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 8 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Flat Rock cemetery in Hickory Flat.

He leaves his wife, Cathy Dismuke; a son, Michael Dismuke of Holly Springs; two daughters, Rachel Beardsley of Hickory Flat, Amy Troncone of Audubon, N.J.; his mother, Delma Dismuke of Holly Springs; three sisters, Jane Gadd of New Albany; Martha Garner of Germantown, Tenn., Edna Bolden of Holly Springs; and four grandchildren.

Lula Bell Stanton Jones

Lula Bell Stanton Jones, 89, of Olive Branch, died Nov. 3, 2006 at her home. She was the widow of James Randolph Jones They had been married icon 61 years.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Nov. 5 at Oak Forest Church of God in Olive Branch. Burial was in Glenfield cemetery in New Albany. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves two daughters, Sandra Jones of Olive Branch, Jean Roberts of Germantown, Tenn.; four sons, Joe Jones of Mokena, Ill., James Jones of Olive Branch, Billy Jones, Harmon Mannon, both of Waterford; two sisters, Maybell Lindsey, Mamie Rhodes, both of Potts Camp; a brother, Frank Stanton of Hickory Flat; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Oak Forest Church of God.

Polly Rutherford Stradley

Polly Rutherford Stradley, 76, of Holly Springs, died Nov. 7, 2006, at her home after a courageous battle with cancer. She was a homemaker and a farmer. Polly was active for many years in the Marshall County Home Demonstration Club. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church and the UMW. She was also active in the Tenn. Ark. Miss. Girl Scout organiztion. She was a past member of the Town and Country Garden Club and a hospice volunteer. One of her proudest accomplishments was to publish a cookbook to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Polly’s interests included golf, bridge, sewing, knitting, painting, gardening and entertaining grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Holly Springs Funeral Home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 9 at the First United Methodist Church in Holly Springs. Burial will be in Hill Crest cemetery.

She leaves her husband Sam Stradley; a son, Mitchell Curl of Munford, Tenn.; four daughters, Paula Stephenson of Southaven, Susan Brame of Olive Branch, Elana Gresham of Holly Springs, Jill Strauss of Olive Branch; a brother, Randol Rutherford of Holly Springs; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Belinda Curl, and a stepson, Ray Stradley.

Pallbearers will be Eric Anderson, John Brickey Curl, Greg Gresham, Eric Poff, Alan Rutherford, Bill Stephenson, Steve Strauss and John Voegler. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. John Jones, Tim Liddy, Dr. Bobby Tyson, Bob Wallace and Bill York.

Charlene A. Yeager

Charlene A. Yeager, 63, of Lamar, died Nov. 6, 2006 at Baptist Hospital in Oxford.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Nov. 8 at Clear Creek Bapist Church in Lamar. Serenity Funeral Home of Holly Springs was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her husband, Earl Yeager Sr.; a son, Buck Yeager Jr.; a daughter, Angie Weldon, all of Lamar; two sisters, Susie Byrd, Cassie Skelton; a brother Raymond Allen, all of Lamar; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Thelma Blondine Crawford

Thelma Blondine Crawford, 93, of Ashland, died Oct. 29, 2006 at North MS Medical Center in Tupelo. She was the widow of George Casey Crawford. She was a former church secretary at First Christian Church in Winterhaven, Fla., a member of First Baptist Ashland and Secret Pal Club.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 1 at First Baptist Church, where she was a member. Burial was in Ashland cemetery. Bro. Don Brown officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves two daughters, Mary Ester Frazier, Betty June Wyatt, both of Ashland; a brother, Blanford Hayden of Griffin, Ga; and four grandchildren.

Carl David Devore

Carl David Devore, 61, of Mt. Pleasant, died Oct. 29, 2006 at his home. He was a Baptist and a driver with a wrecker service.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on Oct. 31 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hopewell cemetery in Ashland.

He leaves a daughter, Angela Sue Smith of Knoxville, Tenn.; two brothers, John H. Devore of Somerville, Tenn., Daniel Devore of Mt. Pleasant; five sisters, Elsie Brooks of Ashland, Peggy Wilson of Trenton, Tenn., Jewell Creech of W. Orange, New Jersey, Inez Ferrell of Stanton, Tenn., Dale Cannon of Somerville, Tenn.; and three grandchildren.

Mattie J. Holland

Mattie J. Holland, 81, of Holly Springs, died Oct. 25, 2006 at her home. She was a member of the church Mother’s Board

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 28 at Hopewell No. 2 MB Church in Hudsonville, where she was a member. Burial was in Gray’s Chapel CME Church cemetery in Hudsonville. Rev. Joe T. Lester officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her husband, Edgar Holland; three daughters, Mattie Washington, Lorece Coleman, Sharon Sims, all of Memphis, Tenn.; a son, Chester B. Holland of Holly Springs; a sister, Lurlean McNeary of Muncie, Ind.; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, James F. Holland.

Pallbearers were Christopher M. Holland, Kenneth Richmond, Fred Crumb, Corey A. Coleman, Jimmy Holland and Freddie Hampton. Honorary pallbearers were her son and sons-in-law.

William P. Hughes

William P. (Pig) Hughes, 62, of Indianapolis, Ind., formerly of Holly Springs, died Oct. 21, 2006. He attended Lee Connor School in Holly Springs. He was baptized at St. Matthews Baptist Church in Holly Springs. He enlisted and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was employed by National Starch and Buehler Cadillac Corporation. Later, he was employed by the Metropolitan School District.

Services were held at 3 p.m. on Oct. 28 at Marvin L. Boatwright Service Funeral Home Chapel in Indianapolis, Ind. Burial was in Marion National cemetery. Rev. James Covington officiated.

He leaves his wife, Sally Lisenby Hughes; a stepson, Ben Dale Perkins; a foster son, Christopher Walter Hughes; brothers, Fred Hughes, Robert T. Hughes, Larry Hughes, Leroy Hughes; sisters, Lilly Mary Spight, Cora Jones, Bonnie McGee, Johnnie Mae Ingram, Debra Scales, Vennia Taylor; and two grandsons.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Indiyia LaPerria Hughes Jones.

William Johnson

William Johnson, 69, of Byhalia, died Oct. 27, 2006 at VA Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn. He was a tool and die machinist with Memphis Machine and an Air Force RES veteran. He was a member of Antique Car Club.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Oct. 29 at Bluff Springs cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his mother, Alice Parker Johnson of Ashland; a brother, John Terry Johnson of Douglasville, Ga.; two sisters, Geraldine Lunday of Ashland, Vivian Massey of Collierville, Tenn.; and seven nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Troy Johnson.

Kelvin Richard Ayers

Kelvin Richard Ayers, 30, of Holly Springs, died Jan. 16, 2006 at Delta Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 22 at Rising Star MB Church in Holly Springs. Burial was in Finley Grove MB Church cemetery. Rev. Robert McCalin officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves two daughters, Letha Kelvisha Turner, Keltrica Porsha Ayers, both of Holly Springs; two sons, Gary DeShun Turner, Kelvin Ayers Jr., both of Holly Springs; his mother, Delories Bowens Taylor of Holly Springs; his father, Raynell Ayers of Holly Springs; two sisters, Lola Renee Ayers, Essie Holloway, both of Holly Springs; and two brothers, Ronnie Ayers, Anthony Bowens, both of Holly Springs.

Pallbearers were Archie Taylor, Marcus Jones, Tyrone Richard, Randy Richard, Douglas Holloway and Statie Smith. Honorary pallbearers were Ronnie Ayers, Antonio Bowen, Jamarcus Zinn, Mack Bowen, David Bowen and Dempsey Bowen.

Joe Glen Bailey

Joe Glen Bailey, 58, of Holly Springs, died Jan. 20, 2006 at his home. He was a member of Waterford Methodist Church and a supervisor for U.S. Corp of Engineers. He was an Army veteran of Vietnam.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 23 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Waterford cemetery. Rev. Ray Wallace and Rev. Milton Boyd officiated.

He leaves his wife, Beverly Bailey; a son, Joey Glenn Bailey of Holly Springs; two daughters, Lisa Bailey Harden of Holly Springs, Robin Bailey Garrison of Waterford; two brothers, Donald Bailey of Jackson, Sammy Bailey of Holly Springs; a sister, Jenice Clayton of Potts Camp; and seven grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Waterford Methodist Church or the Waterford cemetery in Waterford.

Beaulah Malone Blair

Beaulah Malone Blair, 93, of Byhalia, died Jan. 19, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven. She was the widow of John Wesley Blair.

Services were held at 12 noon on Jan. 23 at Cathedral of Praise Church of God in Christ in Byhalia, where she was a member. Burial was in Newell Chapel CME Church cemetery in Victoria. Supt. Andrew McClellon Sr. officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves six daughters, Lula M. Hardaway, Dorothy Jones, Linnie Blair, Minnie Wright, all of Byhalia, Helen Hardaway, Ozell White, both of Memphis, Tenn.; three sons, Curtis Blair, Frank Blair, both of Byhalia, Lucious Blair of Holly Springs; two sisters, Ophelia Ealey of Byhalia, Lucille Garmon of Memphis, Tenn.; 58 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Johnn Hardaway Jr., David Pigues, Curtis Blair Jr., James Blair, Kim Wright, Sammy Wright Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Lucious Blair, Curtis Blair Sr., Frank Blair, Clearence Pigues Jr., Greg Blair and Jeffery Hardaway.
