Gertrude Newborne Newman

April 23, 1920 - Dec. 16, 2002

NATCHEZ - Services for Gertrude Newborne Newman, 82, of Natchez, who died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Natchez Regional Medical Center, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. James Anderson officiating.

Burial will be in Providence cemetery under the direction of George F. West Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the church.

Mrs. Newman was born icon April 23, 1920, in Indianola, the daughter of Nathan and Mary Redeemer.

She was retired from the Natchez Public Schools and a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.

Mrs. Newman was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Newborne and one daughter, Priscilla Rose Newman Carter.

Survivors include one daughter, Margie Herrington and her husband, George; four grandchildren, Elicia Newman, Walter "Ty" Newman, Brandy Herrington and her husband, Victor and Shamika Herrington; four great-grandchildren, Stefon Newman, Tyrann Newman, Tynekia Newman and Tyvion Newman; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be Morris Williams, Melvin Green, Fredrick Hunt, Jerome Herrington Jr., Kenneth White and Darryl Jones.

Albert Hardin Jr.

Jan. 11, 1920 - Dec. 13, 2002

NATCHEZ - Services for Albert (Joe) Hardin Jr., 82, of Natchez, who died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at Natchez Community Hospital, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Pilgrim Baptist Church with Pastor Melvin White officiating.

Burial will be in the Natchez National cemetery under the direction of George F. West Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the church.

Mr. Hardin was born icon Jan. 11, 1920, the son of Lucille and Albert Hardin.

He was retired and a deacon.

Survivors include two daughters, Vera Cain and her husband, Robert and Marilyn Dean and her husband, Walter; two sons, Lawrence Odell Hardin and Micheal Hardin; eight grandchildren, Shauntell, Latwan, Pierre, Walter Jr., Chris, Cylynthia, Jamal and Josh.

Pallbearers will be family members.

Milton Lawrence Havard

Aug. 11, 1943 - Dec. 17, 2002

FRANKLIN COUNTY - Services for Milton Lawrence "Poncho" Havard, 59, of Meadville, who died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at his residence, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Spring Hill Baptist Church.

Burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of Franklin Funeral Home of Meadville.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 1 p.m. until service time Friday at the church.

Mr. Havard was born icon Aug. 11, 1943, in Franklin County, the son of James Havard and Mary Lou Davis Havard.

He was disabled.

Survivors include his parents, James and Mary Lou Davis Havard of Meadville; three brothers, Jessie Havard of Knoxville, J. C. Havard of Vicksburg and Billy Havard of Roxie; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Thomas Coffie Jr.

VICKSBURG - Services for Thomas Coffie Jr., 82, of Vicksburg, who died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Summit Hospital in West Monroe, La., will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Zion Baptist Church.

Burial will follow in the Locust Grove Missionary Baptist Church cemetery in Fayette under the direction of W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.

Mr. Coffie was a Navy veteran serving during World War II on the USS Franklin. He was retired from Waterways Experiment Station after 26 years of service and was a deacon at Mount Zion Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Annie B. Allison Coffie; his stepmother, Meshear Coffie; two brothers, L.A. Coffie and Nathaniel Coffie; and one sister, Catherine Coffie Vanderson.

Survivors include his wife, Chestine Coffie; five sons, John Burnell Coffie and his wife, Marva, both of Fayetteville, N.C., Sonny Nicholson and his wife, Mary, both of Austin, Texas, Tommy Coffie of Jackson, and Jake Coffie and his wife, Rosa, and Bobby Coffie and his wife, Phelshia, all of Vicksburg; four daughters, Isabella Robinson and her husband, Rodester, both of Stafford, Va., Betty Coffie Hardy and Kathy Tyler and her husband, Michael, all of Vicksburg, and Anne Archie of Los Angeles; 23 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three brothers, Percy Jackson and his wife, Hot, both of Birmingham, Ala., Kenneth Coffie and his wife, Linda, both of Fayette, and Larry Coffie of Los Angeles; three sisters, Gloria Berry and her husband, David, Sarah Clark and her husband, Howard, and Jestine Alsworth and her husband, Bobby, all of Fayette; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Lela Ann McNair Montgomery

Sept. 23, 1902 - Dec. 12, 2002

ROXIE - Services for Lela Ann McNair Montgomery, 100, of Fayette, who died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at her residence, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at East Roxie Church of Christ with the Rev. Issac Tenner officiating.

Burial will follow in the Forest Grove Baptist Church cemetery in Fayette under the direction of George F. West Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. with family hour from 7 to 8 p.m. and an Eastern Star service at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Visitation will also be held from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.

Mrs. Montgomery was born icon Sept. 23, 1902, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Charlie McNair and Mary Reynolds.

She attended O'Neal School and Bell Hill School in Jefferson County and was a member of East Roxie Church of Christ, Mount Valley Lodge No. 29 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Sahara Count No. 10 of Our Daughters of Sphinx, and the Jefferson County Institute for Cancer and Terminally Ill Patients.

Survivors include one daughter, Lela Ann Taylor; one son-in-law, Joseph H. Taylor Sr.; one granddaughter, Chasity Trenease McGhee; one stepson, Arthur Pickett; one sister, Dessie Scott; and two brothers, David McNair and Charlie McNair Jr.

Pallbearers will be Dwayne Lucas, Gerald Lucas, L.J. White, Maurey Baland Sr., Charles A. Carradine and Vincent Smith.

Margaret Laub Cooper

April 5, 1924 - Dec. 19, 2002

NATCHEZ - Services for Margaret Laub Cooper, 78, of Natchez, who died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Natchez Community Hospital, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Church with the Revs. Zabron A. Davis III and Samuel A. Tomlinson officiating.

Burial will follow in the Natchez City cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 12:45 p.m. until service time Saturday at the church.

Mrs. Cooper was born icon April 5, 1924, in Natchez, the daughter of Alvin Beekman and Lillian May Kempenich Laub.

Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Cooper Hill and her husband, Jim, both of Covington, La., and Carolyn Cooper Guido and her husband, Gary, both of Natchez; and two grandchildren, Megan Guido and Kari Guido.

The family requests memorials be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 3616 South I-10 Service Road, Suite 101, Metairie, LA 70001.

Bessie Smith

Dec. 2, 1904 - Dec. 19, 2002

PORT GIBSON - Services for Bessie Smith, 98, of Port Gibson, who died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Claiborne County Hospital in Port Gibson, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Rising Sun Baptist Church with Pastor Larry Clark officiating.

Burial will be in Thompson cemetery in Port Gibson under the direction of Rollins Funeral Home of Port Gibson.

Visitation is from 9 a.m. to noon today at the funeral home.

Smith was born icon Dec. 2, 1904, in Claiborne County, the daughter of Ben Newton and Sarah Strong.

She was a homemaker and a member of Rising Sun Baptist Church.

Smith was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include cousins, Jennie B. Hedrick and Charles Davis and his wife, Perlia, all of Port Gibson and Ruby Thomas of Lorman; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be friends of the family.

Rufus Nicholas Dean Reed

Sept. 6, 1977 - Dec. 18, 2002

MEADVILLE - Services for Rufus Nicholas Dean "Pond" Reed, 25, of Meadville, who died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at the University Medical Center in Jackson, will be at 11 a.m. Sunday at New Fork United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roy London officiating.

Burial will be in the Meadville cemetery under the direction of George F. West Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until service time Sunday at the church.

Mr. Reed was born icon Sept. 6, 1977, in Hinds County, the son of Julie Ann Reed and Otha Hampton.

He was educated in the Franklin County School System, was a graduate of the State of Kentucky and was a member of Beacon Light Missionary Baptist Church of New Orleans.

Survivors include his mother, Julie Ann Reed of Meadville; uncle, Earl Graves of Roxie; grandmother, Mozell Keys of Meadville; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be friends of the family.

James E. Colston

Funeral arrangements for James E. Colston, 57, of Natchez, who died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Natchez Community Hospital, are incomplete at Webb Funeral System.

Marguerite Bowker Buchanan

COLUMBIA, Tenn. - Services for Marguerite Bowker Buchanan, 89, of Natchez, who died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Natchez Community Hospital, will be Monday in Columbia, Tenn.

Burial will follow under the direction of Oakes and Nichols Funeral Home in Columbia.

She was a native of Dickson, Tenn., had been a long time resident of Columbia and for the last three years lived in Natchez.

Mrs. Buchanan was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Buchanan and her great-grandson, Joe Douglas Guedon.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Potts and her husband, Jackie, both of Columbia and Peggy Herrington and her husband, Joe, both of Church Hill; two granddaughters, Becky Guedon and her husband, Louis, both of Church Hill and Denise Seale and her husband, Jasper, both of Natchez; one grandson, Mike Herrington and his wife, Cherie, both of Raleigh, N.C.; five great-grandsons, Emile, Matthew and Lee Guedon, James and Joshua Herrington; two great-granddaughters, Jessica and Rebecca Seale.
