Jack Johnston

June 1, 1935 - Dec. 23, 2002

NATCHEZ - Services for Jack Johnston, 67, of Vidalia, La., who died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at his residence, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Laird Funeral Home Union Street Chapel with the Rev. Kay Moser officiating.

Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park under the direction of the funeral home.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Johnston was born icon June 1, 1935, in Lepanto, Ark., the son of James Henry and Ida Priscilla McQuirter Johnston.

He was a farmer, a member of Church of Christ of Lepanto, was retired from Angola State Prison as farm manager, owner of Jack's Barbecue and an active member of Vidalia Horsemen's Club and Natchez Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Johnston; one daughter, Priscilla Mertz and her husband, Gerry, both of Taylor, Texas; one son, Jackie Johnston and his wife, Darla, both of Vidalia; five sisters, Maxine Hyde and Judy Manley, both of Searcy, Ark., Anabelle Moser of Iowa, Charlene Sauder of Franklin, Ark., and Peggy Overby of Lepanto; one brother, Clyde Johnston of Searcy; five grandchildren, Rhonda Partridge and her husband, Todd, Jaclyn Martin and her husband, Cory, and Nicholas Johnston and his wife, Madison, all of Vidalia, Glenn Randal of Pensacola, Fla., and Dennis Randall and his wife, Wendy, both of Thompson Station, Tenn.; and five great-grandchildren, Kelsee Partridge and Kimberlee Partridge, both of Vidalia, Brandon Randall of Ridgecrest, La., and Katherine Randall and Kathleen Randall, both of Thompson Station.

Pallbearers will be Todd Partridge, Cory Martin, Joe Dallalio, Enis Bory, Sonny Buckles and Ronnie Randall.

Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Wascom, Jimmy Wells, Clyde "Cotton" Eason, John Whitehead, Boyd Tucker, Eugene Marshall and Jimmy Sullivan.

Roy Chisholm Nettles

July 15, 1929 - Dec. 24, 2002

NATCHEZ - Services for Roy Chisholm Nettles, 73, of Natchez, who died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at Magnolia House, will be at 2 p.m. today at Laird Funeral Home Union Street Chapel with the Rev. David Dow officiating.

Burial will follow in Nettles cemetery in Seven Pines Plantation in Woodville under the direction of the funeral home.

Visitation is from 1 p.m. until funeral time today at the funeral home.

Mr. Nettles was born icon July 15, 1929, in Natchez, the son of Millard DeLeon and Hattie Mae Roy Nettles.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II in Germany as a medical technician, was employed at International Paper for 18 years, was retired electronics maintenance worker at Natchez Regional Medical Center and a member of Westside Baptist Church.

Mr. Nettles was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Elsie Lorraine Nettles Van Vlymen.

Survivors include three brothers, Millard D. Nettles, Cecil D. Nettles and Percy W. Nettles; two sisters, Louise N. Wisner and Sandra G. Nettles; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Kenneth Van Vlyman, Douglas Dean Nettles, Timothy D. Nettles, John Eric Brown, Jason Wisner and Eugene Barnes.

Herbert Joseph Matthews Sr.

NATCHEZ - Funeral arrangements for Herbert Joseph Matthews Sr., of Baker, La., who died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, are incomplete at Laird Funeral Home.

Gertrude Harris

PORT GIBSON - Services for Gertrude Harris, 51, who died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at the Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at A.W. Watson Elementary School with the Rev. Ronnie Waters officiating.

Burial will be in the Providence cemetery under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. of Port Gibson.

Visitation is from 1 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home and from noon until service time Thursday at the church.

Survivors include one daughter, Superior Jackson of Port Gibson; one son, Andrew Jackson of Clarksville, Tenn.; her mother, Luana Dowery of Port Gibson; nine brothers, Alex Harris, Henry Harris, the Rev. Freddie Harris, John Charles Harris and Robert Harris, all of Port Gibson, Ernest Harris of Chicago, George Harris of Corinth, Nathaniel Harris of Vicksburg and Eddie Lee Hedrick of Tillman; four sisters, Lula Harris of Port Gibson, Gloria Thomas of Monroe, Lillie Thomas of Vicksburg and Clara Wells of Tillman; one uncle, the Rev. Lucky Dowery of Memphis; four aunts, Gertrude Willis of Indianapolis, Ind., Mary Herenton of Port Gibson, Ollie Mae Louisville of Chicago and Mary Watson of Vicksburg; daughter-in-law, Kayla Jackson of Clarksville, Tenn.; three brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Martha Burns Brown

Feb. 26, 1924 - Dec. 22, 2002

NATCHEZ - Services for Martha Burns Brown, 78, of Natchez, who died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at Natchez Regional Medical Center, will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Mary Basilica with the Rev. Alfred Camp officiating.

Burial will be in the Natchez City cemetery under the direction of Young's Funeral Home of Vidalia.

Mrs. Brown was born icon Feb. 26, 1924, in Natchez.

She was former city clerk for the City of Natchez and was a member of St. Mary Basilica, Pilgrimage Garden Club and the City Clerks Association.

Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband, Jack H. Brown; her father, Robert Emmett Burns; her mother, Lena Steir Burns; two brothers, Conner Burns and Robert Burns; and four sisters, Elsie Burns, Kathleen Dickey, Nell Phillips and Anna Robson.

Survivors include two daughters, RoAnn Powlett of Brandon and Jackie Ezell and her husband, Ken, both of Natchez; one son, Barr Brown and his wife, Beth, both of Natchez; two sisters, Louise Aubic and Leona Carter, both of Natchez; one brother, Charles Burns of Natchez; seven grandsons, Chase Brown, Cole Brown, Jack Daylon Brown, Jason Ezell, Preston Parish, Ben Powlett and Steve Powlett; one granddaughter, Eden Ezell; one great-granddaughter, Ella Grace Powlett; and a number of neices and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Ben Powlett, Steve Powlett, Jason Ezell, Cole Brown, Chase Brown, Preston Parish and Ken Ezell.

Honorary pallbearers will be Tony Byrne, Dr. Ed Daly, Dr. Mal Morgan, Pat and Mike Murphy and Charles Burns.

Carolyn Brocato

Funeral arrangements for Carolyn Brocato of Slidell, La., formerly of Ferriday, who died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, in Slidell, are incomplete at Young's Funeral Home.

John-Martin Terranova

Services for John-Martin Terranova, 40, of Natchez, who died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at University Hospital in New Orleans are incomplete at Laird Funeral Home.

Beulah C. Robinson

July 4, 1908 - Dec. 21, 2002

FAYETTE - Services for Beulah Compton Robinson, 94, of Fayette, who died Friday, Dec. 21, 2002, at Natchez Community Hospital, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Jeessamine Ridge Baptist Church with the Rev. James Dorsey officiating.

Burial will be at the church cemetery under the direction of Rollins Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home, with a family hour from 6 to 7 p.m.

Mrs. Robinson was born icon July 4, 1908, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Coolidge Compton and Ella Dunbar. She was a member of Jessamine Ridge Baptist Church, the Benevolent Society Union and Jessamine Ridge Brothers and Sisters.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include one son and his wife, Leroy and Dorothy Robinson of Lorman; two grandchildren, Inger Frye and Yolanda Walker; three great-grandchildren, Xavier Frye, Emmanuel Frye and Barak Walker; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be friends of the family.

Mary D'Aquila

April 9, 1915 - Dec. 21, 2002

WOODVILLE - Services for Mary D'Aquila, 87, of Woodville, who died Friday, Dec. 21, 2002, at Field Memorial Hospital in Centreville, will be at 2 p.m. today at Woodville Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Bunch officiating.

Burial will be at Evergreen cemetery under the direction of Berryhill Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. today at the church.

Mrs. D'Aquila was born icon April 9, 1915, in Pike County, the daughter of Dwight Smith and Jessica Dunn Smith. She was a retired secretary for Farmers Home Administration and a member of Woodville Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one granddaughter, one great-grandson and by her first husband, Joseph Poindexter Faust.

Survivors include her husband, Sylvester John D'Aquila; three stepsons, Sylvester D'Aquila and wife Clara of Biloxi, Henry D'Aquila and wife Carolyn of Long Beach and Joseph Poindexter Faust Jr. of Woodville; one stepdaughter, Yvonne D'Aquila Dooley and husband Thomas of St. Francisville, La.; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

Martha Burns Brown

NATCHEZ - Services for Martha Burns Brown, 78, of Natchez, who died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, in Natchez, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Basilica.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the church.

The family requests memorials be made to Trinity Episcopal Field House Fund or St. Mary Basilica.

Young's Funeral Home of Vidalia, La., is in charge of arrangements.

Beatrice Nelson James

NATCHEZ - Services for Beatrice Nelson James, 86, who died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center, will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Laird Funeral Home with the Rev. Francis Martin officiating.

Burial will follow in the Natchez City cemetery under the direction of Delhomme Funeral Home of Lafayette, La.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. James was the daughter of Charles Nelson and Eva Case.

She was a native of Natchez and a lifetime resident of Lafayette. She was a past resident of Houma, where she operated a boarding house for oilfield workers and was a longtime waitress at Top's Grill in Natchez.

Mrs. James was preceded in death by her husband, L.J. James; her parents; one daughter, Ruby Clary; and three siblings, Charles Nelson, Nell Pullen and Vera Lee Thames.

Survivors include one daughter, Babs Hanberry Martin, and her husband, Francis, both of Ridge, La.; one son, Fred Charles Hanberry of Houma; two sisters, Gertrude Day and Jean Freeman, both of Natchez; eight grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Francis E. Smith

June 27, 1945 - April 14, 2003

MEADVILLE - Services for Francis E. "Frank" Smith, 57, of Meadville, who died Monday, April 14, 2003, at his residence, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Middleton Creek Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Thomas Griffin officiating.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery under the direction of Franklin Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Smith was born icon June 27, 1945, in Amite County, the son of Carey E. and Mary Hurst Smith.

He was a mechanic for Franklin Timber Co. in Bude, a member of Middleton Creek Primitive Baptist Church and a U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Floyd Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Sheila Cotton Smith; his mother, Mary Smith of Prairieville, La.; two sons, Jeffrey Smith of Denham Springs, La., and Francis E. Smith Jr. of Meadville; three daughters, Jennifer Clanton of McCall Creek, Erin Bandy of Union Church and Lindsay Smith of Meadville; three brothers, Carey S. Smith of Prairieville, James Smith of St. Gabriel, La. and Joseph Smith of Port Gibson; two sisters, Margaret Sideris of Prairieville and Dixie Clark of Denham Springs; and six grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Mike Smith, Jason Howell, Danny Oglesby, Johnny Monroe Jr., Eddie Carter, James Cotten, Barry Cotten and James Watson.

William A. Ward Jr.

Dec. 8, 1925 - April 15, 2003

NATCHEZ - Services for William A. Ward Jr., 77, of Natchez, who died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, in Natchez, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Laird Funeral Home.

Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park under the direction of the funeral home.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Ward was born icon Dec. 8, 1925, in Bude, the son of William Arthur Ward Sr. and Ella Reed Ward.

He was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He played semi-professional league baseball for the Natchez Indians and worked as a barber in Natchez for a number of years.

Mr. Ward was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Seab Ward.

Survivors include one daughter, Pat Junkin, and her husband, Dick; four grandchildren, Rick Junkin and his wife, Edie, John Ward Junkin and his wife, Ashley, and Gina Junkin Cauthen and her husband, David, all of Natchez, and Jana Junkin of Jackson; seven great-grandchildren, Kole Junkin, Richard Thomas "R.T." Junkin, Belle Junkin, Kayla Cauthen, Colter Cauthen, Nikki Junkin and Brittany Tindle; one brother, Douglas Ward, and his wife, Anna, both of Oneonta, Ala.; and one nephew, Mike Ward and his wife, Becky, both of Atlanta.

Pallbearers will be Rick Junkin, John Ward Junkin, David Cauthen, Craig Beesley, Ward Graning, Tom Graning, Mike Ward and Frederick Ferguson.

Honorary pallbearers will be S.C. Craft, James Stokes and Bob Savino.

The family requests memorials be made to the Cathedral Fund for Excellence, P. O. Box 1876, Natchez, MS 39121 or a charity of one's choice.
