John Benedittine

May 27, 1915 - March 29, 2003

NATCHEZ - Services for "Buster" John Benedittine, 87, of Axtell, Texas, who died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at his residence, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Laird Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael O'Brien officiating.

Burial will be at the Natchez City cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

A wake will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, with prayers beginning at 7:45 p.m.

Mr. Benedittine was born icon May 27, 1915, in Newellton, La., the son of Emilio and Rosa Monteventi Benedittine. As a child, he attended Assumption Catholic Church in Natchez and was nicknamed "Buster" when working at the M&G; Grocery Store. He later lived in California, Waco, Texas, and Axtell, and he retired after 30 years of service to General Tire.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert Joseph Benedittine; and four sisters, Pauline Bruhn, Mary Stallone, Theresa Guercio and Emma Flournoy.

Survivors include one son, Larry Don Benedittine Sr.; two daughters, Rose Ann Curtis and Sara Benedittine; a daughter-in-law, Jamie Lynn Benedittine; four grandchildren, larry Don Benedittine Jr., Bobbie Lynn Moore, Kevin Curtis and Karen Tucker; and two great-grandchildren, Kacie Curtis and Kaylee Tucker.

Jerry Dale Vanier

Jan. 6, 1980 - March 30, 2003

NATCHEZ - Services for Jerry Dale Vanier, 23, of Natchez, who died Sunday, March 30, 2003, will be at 2 p.m. Wedensday at Laird Funeral Home south chapel with the Rev. Gary Howington officiating.

Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Visitation is 5 to 9 p.m. today at Laird Funeral Home on Union Street.

Mr. Vanier was born icon Jan. 6, 1980, in Natchez.

He is survived by his former wife, Annette Vanier of Woodville; three daughters, Michelle, Destiny and Nicole Vanier, all of Woodville; his mother and stepfather, Rebecca and Jim Schmalke of Natchez; his father and stepmother, Darrell and Debbie Vanier of Natchez; two brothers, Darrell Vanier Jr. of Natchez and Christopher Vanier of Natchez; one sister, Amanda Kelly of Georgetown; his maternal grandfather, Jerry Coward of Vidalia, La.; his paternal grandfather, Jimmy Vanier of Vidalia; his paternal grandmother, Earline Lemoine of Ferriday, La.; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Daniel Baker, Tim Cupit, Mike Bumgarner, Donnie Buttler, Don Buttler and Aaron Cupit.

Honorary pallbearer will be Jeremy Mills.

Louis E. Willard II

Oct. 15, 1981 - March 26, 2003

NATCHEZ - Services for Louis. E. Willard II, 21, of Denham Springs, La., who died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at his home were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Laird Funeral Home Union Street Chapel with the Rev. Mark Crosby officiating.

Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Willard was born icon Oct. 15, 1981, in Natchez, the son of Louis Eugene Willard and Edith Nell O'Quinn Willard.

He was a junior at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and an avid sports fan.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Thomas J. O'Quinn Jr. and paternal grandparents, Louis E. Willard and Sue Tabor Willard.

He is survived by his mother, Edith Wilkes of Jackson; father, Gene Willard and wife Sharon of Denham Springs; a sister, Hannah Painter and her husband Chris of Jackson; maternal grandmother, Marie O'Quinn of Church Hill; nephews Joseph Painter, Jacob Painter and Seth Painter; stepbrothers David Peak and Darrell Peak, both of Denham Springs; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Rosie Lee Brown

Dec. 16, 1919 - March 25, 2003

NATCHEZ - Services for Rosie Lee Brown, 83, of Natchez, who died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at Natchez Community Hospital, will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Mount Sinai Baptist Church with the Rev. Douglas Logan officiating.

Burial will follow in Mount Olive cemetery under the direction of Concordia Funeral Home.

Visitation from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Brown was born icon Dec. 16, 1919, in Natchez, the daughter of Marshall and Fannie Verse Glover.

She was a homemaker and member of Mount Olive Baptist Church.

She is survived by one brother, Richard Glover of Decatur, Ga.; three sisters, Emma Conner of Natchez, Harriet Geter of Atlanta, and Hattie Jones of Des Moines, Iowa; one son-in-law, John Burns Sr. of Memphis; four grandchildren, Dorothy Key, Rhonda White, Quon Burns and John Burns Jr., all of Memphis, Tenn.; one great-granddaughter, Kayla Burns of Memphis; two godchildren, Fannie Gaylor of Utica and Rosie L. Woodruff of Las Vegas; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pallbearers will be Abe White, Fred Brown Jr., Edward Brown, Earnest Gaylor, Larry Gaylor and Edward Conner.

Carine Dunbar-Owens

Nov. 22, 1930-March 27, 2003

FAYETTE - Services for Carine Dunbar-Owens, 72, of Fayette, who died Thursday, March 27, 2003, at her residence, will be held at noon today at Pine Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. J.L. Hammittee Jr. officiating.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery under the direction of Spencer Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time today.

Owens was born icon Nov. 22, 1930, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Willie Dunbar and Floranna Bearden-Dunbar.

She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Pine Grove United Methodist Church. She was an ordained mother of the church.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Tom Owens Sr.; one son, Lenard Owens; and her parents.

She is survived by one son, Thomas Owens of New Orleans; two daughters, Lorraine Corine Stanley-Johnson and her husband, Edward, both of Fayette, and Nancy Bulter of Vicksburg; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one special cousin, Geneva Lewis of Chicago; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be Tom Dunbar Jr., Calvin Hammittee, Willie Hammittee, Russell Hatchett, Johnny Rankin and Cammie Hutchinson.

Honorary pallbearers are Terry Butler Jr., Barry Glass, Edward Johnson, Elbert Owens, Thomas Owens and Patrick Stanley.

J.C. Mitchell

Oct. 16, 1932-March 28, 2003

MEADVILLE - Services for J.C. Mitchell, 70, of Natchez, who died Friday, March 28, 2003, at Natchez Community Hospital, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Franklin Funeral Home.

Burial will follow in Bunkley Baptist Church cemetery in Franklin County under the direction of the funeral home.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mitchell was born icon Oct. 16, 1932, the son of Johnny and Cebelle Oglesby Mitchell.

He was a retired truck driver and member of Bunkley Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Mitchell, and his parents.

He is survived by three daughters, Jackie Mitchell, Deborah Mitchell and Beverly Mitchell; one brother, Jimmy Mitchell of Meadville; and two sisters, Patricia M. Hoyt of Florida, and Dorothy Arnold of Meadville.

Minerva Brown Cosey

Dec. 19, 1909 - March 25, 2003

FAYETTE - Services for Minerva Brown Cosey, 93, of Fayette, who died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at her home, will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Mount Israel Baptist Church with the Rev. Leon Howard officiating.

Burial will follow in church cemetery.

Visitation at Rollins Funeral Home Chapel from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Cosey was born icon Dec. 19, 1909, in Jefferson County to Alfred Brown and Clara Griffin Brown.

She was a homemaker and member and deaconess of Mount Israel Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex Cosey Sr.; her parents; one son, O'Neal "Jack" Cosey; one daughter, Amanda Cosey; one grandson, Gary Cosey; one great-grandson, Marques Dubose; one son-in-law, Andrew January Sr; and 18 siblings.

She is survived by three daughters and spouses, Anita C. January, and Zella and Tiny Cosey, all of Fayette, and Frances and Robert "Tom" Ballard, Lorman; three sons and spouses, Oscar and Katherine Cosey of Akron, Ohio, David Cosey of Fayette, and Alex and Bessie Cosey ofPort Gibson; 19 grandchildren including two of whom she reared, Keith January and Kenyatter Ballard, both of Fayette; 23 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild, Kendrick January Jr. of Fayette; a sister, Frances Gilchrist, Bryant, Texas; three daughters-in-law, including Ida Cosey of Fayette; four godchildren, Lena Tolliver of Vicksburg and Abron and Elton Washington and Claudine Middleton, all of Fayette; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons.

Honorary pallbearers are Oscar Cosey Sr., Alex Cosey Jr., Lee Andrew January, Keith January Sr., David Cosey, Joseph January, Michael January and Kenyatter D. Ballard.

Rosie Lee Brown

Rose Sanders Leak

July 1, 1904 - March 25, 2003

NATCHEZ - Services for Rose Sanders Leak, 98, of Crosby, who died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at Natchez Regional Medical Center, will be held at noon Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church with the Rev. Bob Zawacki SSJ officiating.

Burial will follow in Leak Family cemetery in Possum Corner under the direction of Webb Funeral Home.

A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Leak was born icon July 1, 1904, in Natchez, the daughter of Mamie and William Sanders. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thad Leak Jr.; three sons, Hardie, twins Robert and Paul and Bonnie Leake; and a grandson, William Leake.

She is survived by three sons and spouses, Philip Leake, Thad Leake Jr. and Artis and Jack Leake and Bessie; 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

Honorary pallbearers are Joe Hall and Spencer "Pop" Stateman.

Nathaniel King Sr.

Feb. 14, 1917 - March 23, 2003

PORT GIBSON - Services for Nathaniel King Sr., 86, of Lorman, who died Sunday, March 23, 2003, at University Medical Center in Jackson, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Church of Christ with Pastor Eugene Corney officiating.

Burial will follow in Rose Hill Christian cemetery under the direction of Rollins Funeral Home.

Visitation from noon to 5 p.m. Friday and a wake service from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.

King was born icon Feb. 14, 1917, in Jefferson County, the son of Jeff King and Clara Gibson King.

He was a farmer and logger and member of Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his six sons, Willie King, Akron, Ohio, Jeff and Nathaniel King Jr., both of Pine Bluff, Ark., Author J. King, Palo Alto, Calif., Robert King, El Paso, Texas, and Charlie King, Oakland, Calif.; three daughters, Ruby Johnson, Clara McGriggs and Audra Savage Harris, all of Fayette; 25 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be friends of the family.
