Nov. 27, 1959 - June 14, 2003

NATCHEZ - Services for Alvin "Al Baby" Cooks, 43, of Natchez, who died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at the University Medical Center in Jackson, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. James Anderson officiating.

Burial will be in Grove AME Church cemetery under the direction of R. D. Mackel and Sons.

Visitation is from 1 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.

Mr. Cooks was born icon Nov. 27, 1959, in Adams County, the son of Janie Cooks Dickey and Willie Lee Dickey.

He was educated in the Adams County Public School System, was a Baptist and was employed at J. M. Jones Lumber Company.

Mr. Cooks was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Katie Dickey and Barbara Cooks; and a nephew, Lloyd Cooks.

Survivors include one daughter, Brandy Cooks of Providence, Rhode Island; a son; seven brothers, Willie Earl Dickey of Bogalusa, La., Thomas Earl Dickey and his wife, Shelley, Cyrus Mitchell, Billie Joe Washington and his wife, Roberta, Melvin Cooks, John Cooks and his wife, Frankie, all of Natchez and Frank Cooks of Port Gibson; four aunts, Mary Helen Carter and Earline Williams, both of Brookhaven, Rosie Lee Ross and Gladys Cooks, both of Natchez; two uncles, Roosevelt Owens of Natchez and Archie Dickey of Jackson; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be Ricky Ross, Larry Ross, Percy King, Jo Bruce, Floyd Williams and Louis Ross.

Julius Frank Payne

Sept. 10, 1949 - June 17, 2003

NATCHEZ - Services for Julius Frank Payne, 53, who died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at Natchez Community Hospital, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Zion Hill No. 1 Baptist Church with the Rev. James Washington officiating.

Burial will be in the Payne cemetery on Providence Road under the direction of Webb Funeral System.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and from noon until service time Saturday at the church.

Brother Payne was born icon Sept. 10, 1949, in Natchez, the son of Morris and Sarah Cain Payne.

He was one of 13 children. He attended Adams County Public Schools, accepted Christ at an early age and joined Providence Baptist Church where he served as an usher until his passing. He owed and operated Spider Trucking for approximately 28 years and hauled lumber for J.M. Jones Lumber Company. His greatest enjoyment in life was first, his wife, children, sisters, brother and other family members; secondly, his business. He enjoyed driving and working on his truck at "Spider Trucking Shop".

Brother Payne was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Sarah Evans, Theron Young, Virginia Fuller and Charlotte Henderson; and one brother, Frank Payne.

He leaves to cherish his memory: a devoted wife, Flora Proby Payne; five sons, Julius Kejuan Payne, James Walker and his wife, Brenda, Julius Clark, John White and Adrain Green; three daughters, Sherri Dunlap, Shakeetha Payne, Sandra Cade and her husband, Ernest "Vernell", all of Natchez; one brother, Morris Payne of Natchez; six sisters, Mary Payne King, Leana Myles, Susie Matthews, Martha Thomas, Gertrude Payne and Sinia Green and her husband, Fredrick of Natchez; father-in-law, Henry Davis; six sisters-in-law, Estella Davis and her husband, Tommy, Georgia Ware, Cortina Davis of Natchez, Bobby Ridley, Sherry Gray and her husband, David and Tamara Davis of Gautier; two brothers-in-law, James Ray Davis and Daryl Davis and his wife, Cossandra of Gautier; two god-children, Malia Davis of Gautier and Jermaine Minor of Alexander, La.; 18 grandchildren; one special grandson, JaLyry Marcel Payne; an aunt, Beatrice Smith of Ferriday, La.; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Louis Donald Arbuthnot

Sept. 2, 1930 - June 13, 2003

WOODVILLE - Services for Louis Donald Arbuthnot, 72, of Natchez, who died Friday, June 13, 2003, at Natchez Regional Medical Center, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles E. Bell officiating.

Burial will be in St. Luke cemetery under the direction of George F. West Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 4:30 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.

Mr. Arbuthnot was born icon Sept. 2, 1930, in Fort Adams, the son of Louis Dewey Arbuthnot and Virginia Knight Arbuthnot.

He was retired from Armstrong Rubber Tire Company in the final finishing department and was a Baptist. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Beatrice Arbuthnot; four children, Dorothy Dogan and her husband, George, both of Baker, La., Virginia Ann Thomas and her husband, Willie, both of Natchez, Willie Henry Arbuthnot and his wife, Rena, both of Shreveport, La. and Brenda Sue White and her husband, Rev. Gregory, both of Baton Rouge, La.; one brother, Charles Cleveland Arbuthnot Sr. of Natchez; eight grandchildren, Erika, Erin and Edward Dogan, LaKeisha and Ashley White, Tiffany and Jamelle Arbuthnot and Jasmine Thomas; two god-children, Brandon and Recie Ford; one aunt, Lula Sims of St. Louis, Mo.; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Pallbearers will be Jessie Ralph Turner, Frank Turner, Wilbert Scott, Jessie Turner, Clarence Arbuthnot and Willie Turner.

Aleine Green Walker

Aug. 25, 1916 - June 14, 2003

FAYETTE - Services for Aleine Green Walker, 86, of Natchez, who died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at Natchez Regional Medical Center, will be at noon Friday at Pine Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Percy Turner officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of George F. West Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 11 a.m. until service time Friday at the church.

Mrs. Walker was born icon Aug. 25, 1916, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Mose and Daisy Simon Green.

She was educated in the Jefferson County Public School, was a nurse assistant at Jefferson County Hospital and was a Baptist.

Mrs. Walker was preceded in death by her loving husband, Isiah Walker, Sr.; beloved son, Isiah Walker, Jr.; eight sisters and one brother.

Survivors include three daughters, Mildred W. Carter and Doris Jean W. Rollins, both of Natchez and Dorothy W. Turner of Bellflower, Calif.; one son, Tommie Walker of Natchez; 20 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren; five sisters, Augusta Warren, Annie Jones and Hilda Steverson and her husband, Eugene and Mamie L. Mazique, all of Natchez and Essie Carter of Fayette; one brother, Semo Green of Natchez; brothers-in-law, Lee Arthur Davis of Fayette and Rembert Belton of Natchez; sister-in-law, Bertha Mae Colenburg of McNair; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be Michael Rollins, Calvin Rollins, Samuel Carter, Roderick Carter, Vincent Carter, Vinton Carter and Tyrone Bernard.

Mary A. Gardner

Dec. 22, 1914 - June 16, 2003

JORDAN, Minn. - Services for Mary A. Gardner, 88, of Jordan formerly of Natchez, who died Monday, June 16, 2003, at Mala Strans Nursing Home of New Prague, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wagner Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Robert Iverson officiating.

Burial will be in the Glencoe City cemetery in Glencoe under the direction of Wagner Funeral Home of Jordan, Minn.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Gardner was born icon Dec. 22, 1914, in Sauk Centre, the daughter of Halbert and Mary (Cole) Austin.

She was an Alumni of the University of Minnesota, retired social worker and an active member of the Auburn Garden Club. She loved Natchez with its history, antiques and "Mint Juleps".

Mrs. Gardner was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence E. Gardner Sr.; her sister, Ruth and her husband, Richard Yore; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Survivors include children, Judy and her husband, Eugene Prom, both of Jordan, Thoeny and his wife, Sandy Gardner, both Grantsburg, Wis. and Lawrence "Larry" Jr. and his wife, Karen Gardner, both of Natchez; nephews, Fred and his wife, Susan Yore and Richard and his wife, Kristi Yore; 17 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Minnie Johnson Adams

June 5, 1920 - June 12, 2003

NATCHEZ - Services for Minnie Johnson Adams, 83, of Natchez, who died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at her residence, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Daughters of Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. D. W. Howard officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of R. D. Mackel and Sons.

Visitation is from noon to 7 p.m. with Eastern Star services at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 1 p.m. until service time Friday at the church.

Mrs. Adams was born icon June 5, 1920, in Adams County, the daughter of Joe Johnson and Margaret Burke Johnson.

She was a practical nurse for over 25 years and was a member of Daughters of Zion Baptist Church where she served as a choir member, an usher and president of the Mothers Board. She was also a member of the Edna Anderson Chapter 11, O.E.S. and the Milford M.F.L. C. Society.

Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, three sisters, one son and one grandson.

Survivors include her husband, Roger Adams, Jr. of Natchez; eight sons and their spouses, Mack and Ruby Williams and Charles and Rita Adams, all of Chicago, Ill., Lawrence and Vera Adams and Clarence and Norma Adams, all of Jackson, Rogers III and Augustine Adams, James "Bell" and Doris Williams, Nelson and Alice Dyson and Caesar and Carrie Adams, all of Natchez; four daughters and their spouses, Mary Thomas, Ruth Ann and Andrew "Book" rice, all of Chicago, Annie Mae Swazy and Maranda and Arthur Woods, all of Natchez; one sister, Louise Smith of Chicago; 45 grandchildren, 67 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; one godchild and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be Masonic Brothers.

Narvelle Una Sanders Sturrup

FOREST - Memorial services for Narvelle Una Sanders Sturrup, 80, a homemaker, who died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at her home in Forest, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Forest United Methodist Church.

Burial will be in Harperville cemetery under the direction of Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Forest.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

She and her husband had been members of the Forest United Methodist Church since 1950.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Ray Sturrup; two daughters, Margy Graham of Natchez and Betty Stephens of Clanton, Ala.; two sons, Frank Sturrup and Mike Sturrup, both of Forest; four grandchildren, Kirk and his wife, Maria Graham, Brent and his wife, Vanessa Graham, Bron and his wife, Stacy Stephens and Shelley Stephens; one sister, Mary Baddour Chandler of Memphis, Tennessee; and one brother, John Sanders of Columbus; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Charles Edward Whetstone

July 20, 1930 - June 16, 2003

WOODVILLE - Services for Charles Edward Whetstone, 72, of Woodville, who died Monday, June 16, 2003, at Natchez Regional Medical Center, will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Ed Lundin officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery under the direction of Berryhill Funeral Home.

Mr. Whetstone was born icon July 20, 1930, in Centreville, the son of Glen Ray Whetstone and Elizabeth Smith Whetstone.

He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, was owner of Charels E. Whetstone Realty Co., was past vice president in the southern region of MS Farm Bureau, president of Wilkinson County Farm Bureau, chairman of Wilkinson County Republican Part and past senior warden of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He was a graduate of L.S.U. major in Animal Science and Chemistry and was a member of S.A.E. Fraternity. He was married icon Dec. 26, 1949, at Grace Episcopal Church in St. Francisville, La.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Savage Whetstone of Woodville; three sons, Charles E. Whetstone, Jr., Clifford C. Whetstone and J. Randolph Whetstone, all of Woodville; two daughters, Susan Whetstone Chandler and Joan Whetstone Barnett, both of West Point; one brother, Glen Ray Whetstone, Jr. of Woodville; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Kyle Chandler IV, Charles Chandler, Randy Whetstone, Dustin Whetstone, Zachary Whetstone, August Norris and Hayden Whetstone.

Louis Chatman Thomas

April 16, 1951 - June 14, 2003

NATCHEZ - Services for Louis Chatman Thomas, 52, of Natchez, who died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at University Medical Center in Jackson, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. James Anderson officiating.

Burial will be in St. James AME Church cemetery under the direction of R. D. Mackel and Sons.

Visitation is from 1 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home and from noon until service time Thursday at the church.

Mr. Chatman was born icon April 16, 1951, in Adams County, the son of Jeff Chatman and Rosie Thomas Chatman.

He attended Adams County Public Schools, was a cook and a Baptist.

Mr. Chatman was preceded in death by his father, Jeff Chatman.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Ford Thomas of Natchez; son, Anthony Johnson of Tenn.; daughter, Ikelane Ford of Natchez; mother, Rosie L. Chatman of Natchez; mother-in-law, Cariola Lloyd of Natchez; four sisters, Diane Chatman, Bobby Washington and Rose Chatman, all of Natchez and Gladys Stewart of Decatur, Ga.; five brothers, Willie Smith of Natchez, Leon Chatman and Jessie Chatman, both of Chicago, Ill., Leroy Chatman of Vicksburg and Jeffery Chatman of Bossier City, La.; grandson, TyiAnthony Ford of Natchez; two brothers-in-law, Fred Ford of Dallas, Texas and Shan Ford of Natchez; two sisters-in-law, Cheryl Dunmore of Dallas and LaTonya Lloyd of Irving, Texas; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be brothers.
