James Scott, Jr. was born icon on February 8, 1944 in Vicksburg, Mississippi to the late James and Ruth Scott. He departed this life on Saturday, December 1, 2012.

James, Brady, Mane, Champ, Jimmy Mac, Buck, Granddad, Big Daddy, Scott, Papa-Son, Scotty, and Honey were common terms of endearment used by family and friends. He grew up in Warren County and attended Warren County Schools, graduating from Rosa A. Temple High School. Shortly after graduation, he became employed at Marathon LeTourneau where he worked for 29 years. After the closing of the company, he worked and retired from International Paper Company in 2006.

James “Scott” met and married icon Maria, the love of his life, and they had seven children. He made each child feel special, blessed and nurtured. Not many parents possess skills that make seven children feel like “the only child”, but James Scott did. He would secretly confess to each child that he or she was daddy’s favorite; each believed him. His parenting skills would make the Cosby Show look second rate. There was constant laughter, loving words, family and friend’s time, travel, and yes, discipline. He had a way of disciplining that was worst than any spanking. All he had to say was, “Daddy is so disappointed.” Hearts dropped, lulled, and skipped beats because dad was disappointed. His children would rather have been spanked. The one thing that was most unlike the Cosbys was his teachings about God’s word. He was the best Godly role model. He was the head of his household and Christ was his head. As far as his family was concerned, they were going to serve the Lord!

James became a member of the Lord’s church at Warrenton Church of Christ on January 11, 1977. There he served diligently as a deacon. After attending 61 N. Bypass Church of Christ, he and his love decided to become members there and, a few years later, he served faithfully as one of the congregation’s first shepherds. During the last two years, health issues prevented him from regularly attending in body but not in mind and spirit.

He was preceded in death by parents, James and Ruth; two sisters, Irma Scott and Mary S. Chambers; and one brother, Clarence D. Scott.

He leaves to cherish his memories a loving and devoted wife, Maria Scott; seven loving children; three sons, James Phillip Shelton (Lisa), Benjamin Shelton (Diane) of Vicksburg, Mississippi and Medgar Scott (Angela) of Rochester Hills, Michigan; four daughters, Belle Hickman (Lee) of Columbus, Mississippi, Mariea Toniett Shelton of Jackson, Mississippi, Iris Ragan (Vincent) and Alisa Scott of Vicksburg, Mississippi. He also leaves 28 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren, three sisters Rosa L. Sanders (Willie) and Kalana Shelton, of Vicksburg, Mississippi and Toni Kyles of Chicago, Illinois; three brothers Lamar Gray and Paul Shelton of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Greg Shelton of Dallas, Texas; an aunt, Edna Williams of Vicksburg, Mississippi; three sisters-in-law, Barbara Turner of Chicago, Illinois, Juanetta Polk, of Madison, Wisconsin and Dr. Marnetta (Willie) Tate of Matteson, Illinois; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Extended family and friends including, Rutha Eastman, Frank (Johnny) Cosey, the Caldwell, Cosey, Davenport, Barnes, Gibson, and 61 N. Bypass Church of Christ families of Vicksburg, Mississippi.
