Sam McGriggs Jr.
UTICA — Services for Sam McGriggs Jr. will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Greater Zion Travelers M.B. Church in Utica with the Rev. Charles Harper officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. Friday at Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home and Saturday at the church from 1 p.m. until the service.
Mr. McGriggs died Sunday, May 17, 2009, at his home in Utica. He was 76.
A Hinds County native, he was retired from the pulpwood industry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam McGriggs Sr. and Emma Smith McGriggs; two sons, Charles McGriggs and Sam McGriggs III; two brothers, Louis McGriggs Sr. and Daniel McGriggs; and a sister, Hulda Chase.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice McGriggs of Utica; four sons, Frank McGriggs, Calvin McGriggs, Tony McGriggs and Joseph Mc-Griggs, all of Utica; two daughters, Flora Mae Robinson of Chicago and Mintha Neal of Utica; one sister, Emma Carson of Utica; and grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Norman James Smith Jr.
Services for Norman James Smith Jr. will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Church of Christ with Larry Harris officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until 6 p.m. Friday at Robbins Funeral Home.
Mr. Smith died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, at River Region Medical Center. He was 79. He was a member of Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Smith; his parents, Norman James Smith Sr. and Regina Collins England; a son, James Henry Smith; four sisters; and one brother.
Survivors include a son, Norman James Smith III of Vicksburg; two daughters, Kathryn Smith Thibodeaux of Houston and Patsy Smith Dean of Creve Coeur, Mo.; a sister, Dorothy Warren of Vicksburg; three brothers, Willie England of Jackson, Alonzo England of Vicksburg and Johnny England of San Diego; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and numerous relatives and friends.

Louise J. Roberts
Mrs. Louise J. Roberts died Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at her residence. She was 79.
born in Vicksburg, she was the daughter of the late Louis Augusta Geesler and Zelma Briggs Geesler. She was a member of the Warrenton Independent Baptist Church.
Mrs. Roberts is survived by her daughter, Barbara McDowell of Baton Rouge; two sons, David Roberts and his wife, Pattie, and Robert Roberts, all of Vicksburg; four grandchildren, James McDowell, David McDowell, Alisha Roberts and Wendy Roberts; several great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Rose King and her husband, Gene, of Napa, Calif., Lois Anderson of Dublin, Calif., and Pat Rice of Canton.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rebecca Prewitt; a sister, Lucille Martinez; and two brothers, David Geesler and Duane Baldwin.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Warrenton Independent Baptist Church with the Rev. Marvin Curtis, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Hill cemetery under the direction of Riles Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4 until 7 tonight at the funeral home and Friday at the church from 9 a.m. until the hour of the service.
Pallbearers will be the men of Warrenton Independent Baptist Church.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Jackson, Julius C. Wells and Robert R. Roberts.
Memorials may be made to Warrenton Independent Baptist Missions, 829 Belva Drive, Vicksburg, MS 39180.

Charlie Joseph Roy
Charlie Joseph Roy died Wednesday, May, 20, 2009, at River Region Medical Center. He was 77.
Mr. Roy was a native of Mansura, La., and lived in Cary for 30 years. He was employed by Moore Planting Co. as a heavy-equipment operator. For the past seven years he lived in Vicksburg. He was a corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korea War.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ola Jane Lemoine Roy; his second wife, Jackie Roy; his parents, Dennis and Rose Roy; a daughter, Trudy Williams; and three sisters, Ramona Gauthier, Ethel Diaville and Nellie Firmin.
Survivors include a son, Dwayne Roy of Vicksburg; a daughter, Tonga Vinson of Vicksburg; two step-sons, Terry Pierce of Gulfport and Dennis Pierce of Vicksburg; a brother, Daniel Roy of Monterey, La.; a sister, Anna Jordan of Independence, La.; and seven grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Dwight Sibley officiating. Burial will follow at Natchez National cemetery in Natchez. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Friday until the hour of the service at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Joe Vinson, Jason Bridgmon, Mike Cook, Joshua Roy, Norman Williams and William Moore.

Ethel L. Bryant
Ethel L. Bryant died Friday, May 1, 2009 at Promise Hospital of Vicksburg. She was 70.
A native of Bolton, Miss., Bryant was preceded in death by her parents, John (Jack) Bryant and Mary Hill.
Survivors include a sister, Roberta Currie of Vicksburg, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Marilyn J. Braxton
ROLLING FORK — Marilyn J. Braxton died Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at Sharkey-Issaquena Hospital in Rolling Fork. She was 65.
Mrs. Braxton had lived in Rolling Fork for a number of years. She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by a daughter, Cindy Blocker of Vicksburg; five sisters, June Kelly, Barbara Oswalt and Nita Chisolm, all of Rolling Fork, Ann Wyatt of Vicksburg and Kathy Tatum of Belzoni; and two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mound cemetery in Rolling Fork with the Rev. Millard L. Caulder officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home in Rolling Fork. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Friday until the service at the funeral home.

Hilliard Berry Jr.
Services for Hilliard “Butch” Berry Jr. will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Malcolm O’Leary officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill cemetery.
Mr. Berry died Monday, May 11, 2009, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Jackson. He was 60.
A Vicksburg native, Mr. Berry graduated in 1966 from Rosa A. Temple High School. He was employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Hilda Ezelle McGuffee
Hilda Ezelle McGuffee died Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at River Region Medical Center. She was 70.
born in Crowville, La., Mrs. McGuffee had been a resident of Vicksburg most of her life. She was retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rufus and Estelle Busby Ezelle; a grandson, William Dean McGuffee; a brother, Robert Lynn Ezelle; and a sister, Lynette Emfinger.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Sidney J. McGuffee Sr.; three sons, Sidney “Sonny” McGuffee Jr. and wife Dianne of Monroe, La., Barry D. McGuffee and wife Reneé of Vicksburg and Rodney A. McGuffee and wife Lailanie of Brandon; seven grandchildren, Joshua McGuffee and wife Brittany of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Benjamin McGuffee and wife Kayla of Hammond, La., Jennifer McGuffee Miller and husband Lindsey of Brandon, Kristy McGuffee of Monroe, Mallory McGuffee of Vicksburg and Bradley McGuffee and Adam McGuffee, both of Brandon; two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Kyle McGuffee, both of Hammond; and a sister, Terrie Ezelle Ferguson and husband Frank of Vicksburg.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Riles Funeral Home Chapel with Ron Burch, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 1 p.m. Friday until the service.
Pallbearers will be deacons of Trinity Baptist Church.
Memorials may be made to Trinity Baptist Church, 3365 Porters Chapel Road, or to a favorite charity.

Andrew "AM" Horton
Andrew “AM” Horton died Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at Hospice Ministries of Ridgeland. He was 42.
Mr. Horton was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Ida Mae Kidd and Malisha Mae McFarland; and a brother, Donnell Horton.
He is survived by his mother, Annie Mae Horton of Vicksburg; father, Joseph Horton of Edwards; sister, Annie Sims of Vicksburg; brothers, Cornelius Horton and Ron Horton, both of Vicksburg, and Calvin Horton Kidd of Milwaukee; and other relatives and friends.
Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Charles P. Horton
EDWARDS — Services for Charles P. “Charlie” Horton will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Oak Ridge M.B. Church in Edwards with the Rev. K.C. Frazier officiating. Burial will follow at Henry cemetery in Edwards. Visitation will be from 1 until 7 p.m. Friday at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home.
Mr. Horton died Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center.

Clyde R. Hill
Services for Clyde R. Hill will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home with Dr. Keith Rouser officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill cemetery.
Mr. Hill died Friday, April 24, 2009, at River Region Medical Center. He was 58.
born in Hinds County, he was a retired construction worker. He was of the Baptist faith.
