FOUNTAIN
Mrs. Susie Fountain, a longtime resident of Moss Point, Miss., departed this life at her home on Sunday, June 27, 2004, after a lengthy illness. She was 89 years old. born icon Susie Nettles in Tunnel Spring, Ala., Mrs. Fountain was the second child born icon to the late Will and Myra Nettles. She married icon the late Willie Lee Fountain in 1935. The couple moved to Moss Point in 1945, where they reared their 10 children and remained until their deaths. In the Moss Point community, Mrs. Fountain's life was met with both triumph and tragedy. Two of her young sons were involved in automobile accidents that took the life of 3-year-old Wayne Keith in 1962. An earlier accident in 1953 left then-3-year-old Bizzell permanently disabled. The family survived these life-changing events, and went on to build a viable community base that included active participation in the educational, cultural and religious construction of the community. Encouraged by their parents, the entire family became actively involved in the struggle to promote social and civil parity in the Moss Point community during the 1960s. Having little formal schooling of her own, Mrs. Fountain supported the educational efforts of their community and made sure that her children attended high school and college. She was among the group that sold cakes, pies and ice cream to buy uniforms for the first Magnolia High School band. Mrs. Susie, as she became known in the community, was sought after for her pies and cakes. She was also an avid fish woman and, for a brief time, worked in the seafood industry. In addition to her role as a homemaker, wife and mother, Mrs. Susie was a committed supporter and member of First Baptist Church; and before her illness, a close, personal friend to many of its pastors and their wives. Each day, her personal presence could be seen somewhere at the church for Sunday School, Sunday services, Bible study, prayer meeting, Vacation Bible School, or the various auxiliary meetings that included The Mother Board, The Junior Church, and an assortment of youth and senior organizations. Mrs. Fountain and her siblings represent the third generation of her family's traceable genealogy in this country. Her grandparents, Susan and Jeff Liddell, were born icon slaves and were young teens when emancipation came. Although her father lived to the ripe old age of 93, her mother, Myra Liddell Nettles, departed this life at age 55, a circumstance from which Mrs. Fountain never fully recovered. Her surviving siblings include two sisters, Viola Williams of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Mayfield Fountain of Cleveland, Ohio; and one brother, Elder Joseph Nettles, also of Cleveland. Left with so many fond memories and so many wonderful legacies are her sons, Fred and Bizzell (Bobby) of Moss Point, and Will (Tom) of Cincinnati, Ohio; daughters, Synella Wilson of Birmingham, Ala., Myra Bolden of Pensacola, Fla., Arlene Bostic of Moss Point, Willa Taylor of Ontario, Calif., Sara Caldwell and Eartha Tucker of Atlanta, Ga., and Eula Fisher of Marrero, La.; daughters-in-law, Connie and Terry Fountain; sons-in-law, Samuel Bolden, Solomon Wilson, and Joseph Fisher; the beautiful faces of granddaughters, Kim, Lana, Susan, Bridgett, Sybil and Little Myra; the handsome faces of grandsons, Patrick, Michael, Monte, Mark, Merrick, Morrey, Frederick, Teddy, Johnathan, Benjamin, Jeffery, Grant and Little Will; and great-grandchildren, Tempest, Archer, Josh, Kalep and Kelvin; and a host of wonderful neighbors, relatives and friends.
