AMORY - Ora Cruber, 84, died Sept. 7, 2004, at Gilmore Memorial Hospital. Services were today at 11 a.m. at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home with Tommy Whaley officiating and Lee Gardner and the Rev. R.D. Cline assisting. Mrs. Cruber was born icon Nov. 3, 1919, to the late Josh W. and Savannah Thompson Stevens in Marion County, Ala. She was the owner/operator of Cruber's Dress Shop in Smithville, night clerk at Shelaine Courts and a member of the First Baptist Church of Aberdeen. Roy Thomas, Brent Coleman, B.J. Stevens, Robert Summerford, Eulon Summerford, Doyle Summerford, Phil Roberts, Dan Hester, Carter Dobbs and Tony Sharplin will serve as pallbearers. Edith B. Estes
LAKELAND, Fla. - Edith B. Estes, 77, died Sept. 7, 2004. Services will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Lakeland Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be Friday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Estes was born icon Jan. 14, 1927, in Columbus. She was a sales clerk for Taylor Rexall Drug Store. She is survived by her son, Ralph Estes of Louisville; daughters, Virginia Bryan and Brenda Thomas, both of Lakeland and Alice Whitehead of Vicksburg; brother, Robert Brandon of Columbus; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Lottie Kemp
STARKVILLE - Lottie Kemp, 83, died Sept. 3, 2004, at her residence. Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer M.B. Church with the Rev. Simeon Weatherby officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Visitation will be today from noon to 7 p.m. at West Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Mrs. Kemp was born icon Aug. 31, 1921, to the late John Robert and Mary Bell in Oktibbeha County. She was in the dry cleaning business. She is survived by her son, Hal Kemp of Buffalo, N.Y., daughters, Johnnie Mai Rowland of Buffalo and Annie Dancer of Starkville; brothers, William Bell and Arsell Bell, both of Buffalo; sister, Mary Vanderbelt of Buffalo; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Matthew Seals, Robert Kemp, James Wright, Ervin Weaver and Lee Roy Bell will serve as pallbearers.

Charles Holt
Charles Holt, 60, died Sept. 3, 2004, at Baptist Memorial Hospital - Golden Triangle. Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Pattman Funeral Home Chapel with Marion Bonner officiating. Burial will be at Union cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Holt was born icon July 24, 1944, to the late Robert and Emma Holt in Lowndes County. He is survived by his sons, Charles Holt Jr. of Columbus, Charles Presswood of Birmingham, Ala., and Corey Peterson of Bessemer, Ala.; daughters, Felicia Holt of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Tylisha Carpenter, Tamikia Foster, and Christine Bowen, all of Birmingham, and Kathy Parker of Atlanta; brother, Robert Holt of Columbus; sisters Lucy May Harris, Dorothy Erby, Christine Hood, Lowreen Taylor, Mary Holt, Lillian Holt and Catherine Singleton, all of Columbus, Lillie Mae Weaver of Durrant and Gloria Butler of Birmingham. Robert L. Holt, Octivia Holt, Clark Holt, Stanley Erby, Joe Brown, Robert Brown and Tumetrist Holt will serve as pallbearers.

Sallie B. Malone
CRAWFORD - Sallie B. Malone, 86, died Sept. 6, 2004, at Baptist Memorial Hospital - Golden Triangle. Services will be Saturday at noon at Oakland M.B. Church with Joe Bowens officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Westbrooks Funeral Home in West Point. The body will be at the church one hour prior to services. She is survived by her husband, West Malone; sons, O.C. Malone and West Malone Jr., both of Crawford and James Malone of Macon; daughters, Maxie Turner of Columbus, Josephine Wilson, Louise Harrell, Rosie B. Malone and Doris Bridges, all of Crawford; and sisters, Stevell Samuels of Memphis and Connie Clairborne of Richmond, Va.

Morris R. (Randy) Wheeler
Morris R. (Randy) Wheeler, 45, of Columbus, MS, passed away on Sept. 6, 2004, at his residence in Columbus, MS. Funeral services for Mr. Wheeler will be Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at Lone Oak Church of Christ in Steens, MS, with Bro. Dustin Brock officiating. He will lie in state at the church from 10 - 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in Lone Oak cemetery, Steens, MS, with Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS, directing. Mr. Wheeler was born icon Aug. 27, 1959, in Columbus, MS, to Festus B. Wheeler Jr. and the late Dorothy Louise Browning Wheeler. He was a lifelong resident of Columbus, MS, and had been a respiratory therapist since 1988. In addition to his father, Mr. Wheeler is survived by his brothers, Mike Wheeler of Tuscaloosa, AL, Glenn Wheeler of Terry, MS, and Scott Wheeler of Columbus, MS. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the church. Mrs. Wilson was born icon Sept. 15, 1918, to the late Henry Arnt and Tester Leech Camp in Itawamba County. She was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church and she was a poultry farmer and a housewife. She is survived by her husband, Bold Wilson of Tremont; daughter, Jemmie Lynn Fowler of Tremont; brother, Henry Arnt Camp Jr. of Florence, Ala; sisters, Geneva Sullivan of Marion, Ark., and Lecile 'Lucy' Markham of Tremont; and one grandchild. Charles and John Anthony, Carl Hutson, Tom Jackson, Noel Kennedy, Tommy Poole, and Arnie and Leroy Camp will serve as pallbearers. Gene Edward Murphy
SMITHVILLE - Gene Edward Murphy, 73, died Sept. 13, 2004, at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Ala. Services will be today at 2 p.m. at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Bobby Howell officiating. Burial will be at New Hope cemetery. Mr. Murphy was born icon Feb. 13, 1931, to the late Avery Franklin and Mellie Cleola Suggs Murphy. He worked for Amory Garment Co. of Amory and Sealtest Milk in Memphis and he was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. He is survived by his sons, Eddie and Kenneth Murphy, both of Fulton and Bobby Lee Murphy of Tupelo; daughter, Sandra White Rayburn of Tremont; brother, Frank Murphy of Amory; sister, Sible M. Hathcock of Smithville; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his former wife, Geneva Holiday. Richard White, Phillip, Randy and Andy Hathcock, and John, Jimmy and James Ralph Murphy will serve as pallbearers.

James O. Strawbridge
HAMILTON - James O. Strawbridge, 99, died Sept. 13, 2004, at Baptist Memorial Hospital - Golden Triangle. Services will be today at 2 p.m. at the Tisdale-Lann Memorial Chapel in Aberdeen with the Rev. Terry Edwards officiating. Burial will be at New Prospect cemetery.

Mr. Strawbridge was born icon July 22, 1905, to the late James Irvin Strawbridge and Hattie Harrison Strawbridge in Lamar County, Ala. He was a retired farmer and a member of New Prospect Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Beautress Helen Dobbins Strawbridge; son, James L. Strawbridge; grandson, Roger Sullivan; and great-great grandson, Joshua D. Sullivan.

He is survived by his daughters, Gurthleen Pickle and Flora Sullivan, both of Hamilton; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. James Prillhart, Andy Thompson, Chase Whitaker, Shane Perkins, Charles Strawbridge and David Strawbridge will serve as pallbearers.

Howard G. Powell
Howard G. Powell, 82, died Sept. 14, 2004, at Baptist Memorial Hospital - Golden Triangle. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Gunter & Peel Funeral Home.

Theo Doss
WEST POINT — Theo Doss, 83, died Aug. 24, 2010, at his residence. Services are Thursday at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with the the Rev. Roy Myers officiating, assisted by Dr. James Towery and the Rev. Eddie Bullock. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to service and today from 5-8 p.m. at Calvert Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Arbor Grove cemetery near Houston. Mr. Doss was born icon Aug. 26, 1926, in Woodland in Chickasaw County to the late Fannie Lou Whitt and William Joseph Doss. He had worked for the Babcock & Wilcox Co. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, and was also a member of the West Point Masonic Lodge No. 40. Doss was also a U.S. Army veteran who served in World War II and the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Lucas Doss, of West Point; two daughters, Jeanie Doss, of Columbus, Thea Kay Tribble of West Point; one granddaughter, Nikki Tribble of West Point; and three brothers, Joe Lee Doss of Houston, Barney Doss of Memphis, Tenn., and Roger Doss of Alvarado, Texas.

Elaine Mahaffey
Johnnie Elaine Wilson Mahaffey, 63 of Columbus, MS passed away on Monday, August 23, 2010 at her residence. Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 25, 2010 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, August 26, 2010 at 2:30 PM in the Lowndes Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Granville Wiggins officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Gardens, Columbus, MS with Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS directing. Mrs. Mahaffey was born icon September 28, 1946 in Columbus, MS to the late John and Minnie Wilson. She was a lifetime resident of Columbus, MS and was previously employed with East Lowndes Water. Mrs. Mahaffey enjoyed antiquing, estate sales and spending time with her family. She was loved by her husband and she loved him with all of her heart. Mrs. Mahaffey never held a grudge to anyone that did her wrong. She walked with the Lord and is being hugged by him now. Mrs. Mahaffey was a very strong Christian woman and a member of Victory Tabernacle, Columbus, MS. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her niece, Kimberly Leatherman. Mrs. Mahaffey is survived by her husband, James “Jim” Mahaffey; son, Tyrus Raymond (Stephanie) Bissett, Wilson, NC; grandchildren, Zach, Tripp and Presley Bissett; step-sons, Terry King, Jason Mahaffey, and Joel Mahaffey all of Columbus, MS; sisters, Sue McCollum, Columbus, MS; Linda (Steve) Leatherman, Coldwater, MI; brother, Leon (Rubye) Robertson, Ocean Springs, MS; nephew, Jason Leatherman of IN; nieces, Pam McGill, Renee Priddy and many great nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Joel Mahaffey, Jason Mahaffey, Terry King, Zach Bissett, Jason Leatherman and Tripp Bissett. Honorary pallbearers will be Charlie Culpepper, Don Burns, David Shelton, Kenny Wiegel, Bob Gerhart, Frank Ponds, Jeffery Hall and Robert Brownlee. Nanette Rainey
WEST POINT — Nanette Dodson Rainey, 93, died Aug. 23, 2010, at her residence. Services are Thursday at 11 a.m. at Robinson Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Shannon officiating. She was born icon July 25, 1917, in Dossville to the late George Dodson and Exa Cook. She was a member of First Methodist Church and helped start Pink Ladies and Sally Kate Winters Memorial Children’s Home. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, David Eli Rainey; and her daughter, Nanette Lou Rainey. She is survived by her children, George Leach, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Mahaska Whitley, of Tallahassee, Fla.; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and a sister, Delle Baker.

Evelyn Bowen
ABERDEEN — Evelyn Sumner Bowen, 92, died Aug. 23, 2010, at Gilmore Memorial Hospital in Amory. Services are Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Tisdale-Lann Memorial Chapel in Aberdeen with Dr. George Forbes officiating. Burial will follow in Oddfellows Rest cemetery. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mrs. Bowen was born icon Nov. 27, 1918, to William Lee Sumner and Maude Gregory Sumner in Okolona. She lived in Aberdeen since 1934. She retired as supervisor from Puckett Sportswear in 1980. She was a member of Aberdeen First Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Hugh Hamilton Bowen; three brothers, Willie, Leon and Dillard Gene Sumner; and three sisters, Gladys S. Ferguson, Laverne S. Hall and Odell S. Hollowell.

William Lofton
WEST POINT — William Stevens Lofton, 92, died Aug. 24, 2010, at West Point Community Living Center. Services are Thursday at 2 p.m. at Palestine Methodist Church with the Revs. Cary Sutphin, Ben Rosenkrans, Harold Robinson and Larry Ferguson officiating. Burial will follow in Palestine cemetery. Visitation will be today from 5-8 p.m. at Robinson Funeral Home. The body will lie in state one hour before service time at the church. Mr. Lofton was born icon Nov. 6, 1917, in Clay County to the late William Neal Lofton and Ruby Anna Stevens. He was a lifelong resident of the Beasley community and a member of Palestine Methodist Church. He was a carpenter, farmer and worked at B&W; for several years. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elsie Lofton; brother, Andrew Lofton; sister, Edna Conner; one grandchild; and two great grandchildren. He is survived by his son, Russell Lofton, of Pheba; daughters, Leora Hodnett and Rose Ann Wilson, both of Cedar Bluff, and Deborah Watson, of Pheba; sister, Lucile Embree, of West Point, 14 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Joe Minter
Joe MinterFuneral services for Judge Joe Minter, 78, of Sulphur Springs were conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 7, 2010, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Fred Lewis, the Rev. Henry Suche, the Rev. LaVelle Hendricks and State Rep. Mark Homer officiating. Interment followed at Pickton cemetery with Coy Johnson, Tommy Allison, Clyde Browning, John Hipkins, Joe Reid Scott and Scott and Stacy Loyless serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were the Sulphur Springs Country Club golf buddies, Hopkins County Military Coalition, Single Action Shooters Society, V.F.W. members, Scott Ferguson, State Rep. Mark Homer and Dr. Charles Jones. Judge Joe Minter passed away Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at his residence. He was born icon in Pickton on March 28, 1932, the son of Joseph A. Minter and Idabell (Templeton) Minter. He married icon Dorothy J. Wright in Deport on August 1, 1953. She survives. Judge Joe Minter was a retired Hopkins County Judge. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was affiliated with the following organizations: Phi Delta Kappa; Kappa Delta Pi; Order of the Red Rose (an honor society for university professors); Who’s Who, both as school administrator and university professor; National Retired Teachers’ Association; Ark-Tex Council of Governments; Northeast Texas Rural Rail Transportation District; Hopkins County Historical Society Board of Directors; Farmers’ Union; American Legion; and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served as cochairman of the Hopkins County Veterans Memorial. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Sulphur Springs. Judge Minter was a Fulbright Scholar. He reorganized the Meal-A-Day program. He organized the Hopkins County Military Coalition Honor Guard for deceased veterans. He was instrumental in reorganizing rural rail service for Hopkins, Franklin, Titus and Hunt counties. He was also a professor at Mississippi University for Women, Columbus, MS. Other survivors include one daughter, Kay Hart and husband Richard, of Snellville, GA; two sons, David Minter and wife, Sherry, of Richmond, VA, and John Minter of Williamsburg, VA; one sister, Barbara Minter Shields of Grapevine, TX; one brother, Thomas M. Minter of Rowlett; six grandchildren, Steve Minter, paul Minter, Michael Minter and John M. Minter, David Hart and Sam Hart; one great-grandchild, Joseph Aaron Minter; two brothers-in-law, Leroy Wright and wife, Shirley, of Terrell, TX, and James Roushey of Mesquite, TX; one sister-in-law, Mildred Rogers of Paris; a special caregiver, Lisa Flecker; numerous nieces and nephews and countless special friends. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Ann Pleasant and Sally Roushey. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 301 Church Street, Sulphur Springs, TX 75482.
